In this powerful episode of American Potential, host David From sits down with Rob Perez, co-owner of DV8 Kitchen in Lexington, Kentucky. More than just a restaurant, DV8 is a place where people recovering from addiction get a fresh start, proving that meaningful work can be a key to long-term recovery. Rob shares the deeply personal story behind the restaurant, from his own battle with addiction to his and his wife Diane's journey to create a business that prioritizes second chances. By employing individuals in early recovery and providing them with structure, accountability, and support beyond the workplace, DV8 has become a model of hope and transformation. But their success didn't come easily. Rob discusses the challenges of hiring people with past struggles, how they developed a system that ensures stability and success, and why many businesses shy away from second-chance employment. He also explains how their approach could be a solution to America's workforce shortages and addiction crisis. From hiring strategies to life-changing success stories, this episode dives into the real impact of combining business with purpose. Rob also shares how DV8 is inspiring other businesses to embrace second-chance hiring and create opportunities that help people reclaim their lives. Don't miss this inspiring conversation on redemption, dignity, and the power of work to change lives.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jagwar Twin over Zoom video!Deemed by many as the unofficial anthem of the " Wonka" soundtrack, Jagwar Twin has officially entered the new year with a lyric video for the massive hit, "Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa) ". Weaving together candycoated harmonies and whimsical instrumentals, the track epitomizes Jagwar Twin's distinctive musical prowess that effortlessly balances nostalgia and fresh innovation. With over 40 million views across TikTok and 8 million streams in less than a month, Jagwar Twin's latest electrifying single has taken the digital music scene by storm, achieving remarkable success on TikTok and playlists alike. The track's infectious beats and catchy lyrics have sparked various viral trends on TikTok, where users from around the globe have embraced the song with over 150K user-created videos using the track, securing Jagwar Twin a spot on TikTok's Viral 50 Chart. Simultaneously, " Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa)" has found its place on influential playlists across streaming platforms, including the coveted covers of not only Spotify's The New Alt and Limelight, but Amazon Music's DV8. This dual triumph highlights Jagwar Twin's innate ability to connect with diverse audiences and solidifies the track as a dynamic force in the contemporary music landscape.Coinciding with the release of Paul King's "Wonka", “Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa) ” features an interpolation of “ Oompa Loompa", marking a rare approval from the original film's composers. Delving into the world of Willy Wonka, Jagwar Twin brings a new life and twist to the classic "Oompa Loompa" chorus, while also modernizing it. Co-written by Sean Van Vlee t (All Time Low, PVRIS) and Ryan Daly (Dove Cameron, John Legend), "Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa) ", exemplifies the magic of modern visionaries reimagining the timeless charm of musical classics."Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa)" is similar in style to his previous release, “ Good Time (1:08)”, which peaked Top 20 at Mexico radio, and stand out track “Happy Face.” With an impressive 425+ million catalog streams and 2.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Jagwar Twin stands out as a dynamic force challenging the status quo of the alternative music scene . His genre-defying artistry has captivated audiences through the seamless blend of rhythmic accordion hooks, melodic children's choirs, and gritty breakbeats, accompanied by profoundly introspective, almost cryptic lyrics.Jagwar Twin's previous album, 33, channeled the magnetic showmanship of Ziggy Stardust -era David Bowie and Bad -era Michael Jackson, all while unapologetically embracing authenticity and vulnerability. Fueled by chart-toppers like "It's Your Time," "I Like To Party," "Down To You," and "Happy Face," Jagwar Twin serves as a powerful catalyst. His innovative style urges listeners to embrace their true selves, recognize their self-worth, and place trust in their individuality. We want to hear from you! We premiere new music from Cork based techno producer MEJMI. The rising star provides a psychedelic trip through hypnotic atmospheres on her latest offering on Faoi Thalamh Records. MEJMI is quickly becoming one of our favourite up & coming techno acts in Ireland. MEJMI's stripped back approach to prismatic techno production has been turning heads within the last six months. A strict approach to textured rhythms that calls on sci-fi inspirations makes a unqiue sound that is both charming and refreshing. Aside from becoming one of Ireland's stand-out up & coming techno producers, MEJMI has also been busy rocking dancefloors across Cork & Poland. Having headlined at the Slutty Virgin Festival and K-fest in Kerry she has also made appearances country wide playing for Cheek Eire, Blue Print Festival, Kriptik, 3ip.ka, Prospekt, Dv8, as well as more gigs forthcoming. MEJMI's latest offering on Faoi Thalamh Records is her best yet as she rapidly switches between pounding four to the floor rhythms to electro style broken beats. Textured synth stabs play off bleeping syncopated hits for a coursing hypnotic tool. Today's premiere is courtesy of Galway-Cork-based DJ and producer, MEJMI. MEJMI provides us with a track entitled ‘Warsaw Angels' that is unlike her previous techno releases showcasing her diverse musical pallet. Spanning territory that sounds ethereal, and atmospheric, yet simultaneously introspective. Truly stellar stuff. MEJMI is originally trained in classical music but has been making a name for herself recently as she's moved her musical prowess into darker territories of minimalistic techno. Her distinct 90's inspired sound draws influence from acid to rave and is focussed on paying respect to the routes of dance music culture. Boasting previous releases on harmless.recs and SPEED, MEJMI has noticeably tapped into inspirations that derive from historical eras of dance music. Touching on MEJMI's DJ capabilities, the young artist has built a solid reputation for rocking dance floors in recent times. She has found herself playing on the Polish circuit on both a club and festival level, headlining ‘The Slutty Virgin Festival' and ‘K-fest' in Kerry as well as appearances nation-wide playing for Cheek Eire, Blue Print Festival, Kriptik, 3ip.ka, Prospekt, and DV8 too, with more shows in the pipeline, no doubt! MEJMI's track ‘Warsaw Angels' is a terrific track that flexes the producers' muscles as she takes a more unconventional approach when compared to the rest of her discography. Nearing a sound that is best described as ethereal, and atmospheric, yet simultaneously introspective which makes for a stellar release. Our first premiere of the week comes from Galway based DJ & producer MEJMI. The budding producer has recently released a 3 track EP which is focussed on the textured side of minimal techno, as MEJMI finds solace in off kilter rhythms, funky sequences and alien soundscapes. Galway based MEJMI is originally trained in classical music, but she has been making a name for herself recently as she's moved her musical prowess into a the darker territories of minimalistic techno. Her distinct 90's inspired sound draws influence from acid to rave and is focussed on paying respect to the routes on dance music culture. MEJMI has garnered a solid reputation for rocking dancefloors in recent times. The young DJ has recently found herself playing on the Polish circuit on both a club and festival level. She has headlined at the slutty virgin festival and K-fest in Kerry and made appearances country wide playing for Cheek Eire, Blue Print Festival, Kriptik , 3ip.ka, Prospekt, Dv8, as well as more gigs forthcoming. MEJMI's three track contribution to Faoi Thalamh Records is steeped in deep sea excursions, as MEJMI manages to capture aquarian soundscapes through polyrhythmic sequences and off-kilter rhythms. ‘Skrzyczne' poses at the most dance-floor friendly track out of the lot, as hypnotising synths glide around the syncopated grooves. Jarring synth lines seem to ripple and melt throughout the track, as dynamic 900 grooves stir intensity, agitated metallic hits leave listeners feeling somewhat on edge, and most certainly unhinged. This is a big tip for fans of Stanislav Tolckachev, Lewis Fautzi & more. This was an inspiring episode that I'm so happy to be sharing! Dan is a movement director with a wealth of experience in the industry as a filmmaker and especially as a movement director. He has worked with Sally Cookson on A Monster Calls (Bristol and London Old Vic) and Jane Eyre (Bristol Old Vic and National Theatre). This Hardstyle mix is a tribute to the legendary B-Front sound. I've been a fan of B-front's music for well over a decade now. His music is completely unique. The dark but very melodic atmosphere with long dissonant notes is his signature sound. I found out that Bob van der Palen (the man behind the alias B-Front) was part of 156 released tracks over the course of 15 years (not counting ghost produced stuff). I decided to also put collabs in the mix. So not everything is purely his sound, though you can hear it's part of every track. The sound blends amazingly with the sounds of other artists. No wonder he's part of multiple groups: B-Frontliner (w/ Frontliner) , Zazafront (w/ Zany & DV8), 2-Sidez (Pulse/Dawnfire) and B-Freqz (w/Frequencerz). Not forgetting how perfectly the sound blends with the sound of Phuture Noize, Adrenalize and Digital Punk.►► All the links you will need ◄ ◄Follow my Socials ► https://linktr.ee/elektrify Stream & download ► ► Some history behind B-Front:Van der Palen came into contact with music at the age of eight, before starting to produce on his own in his neighbor's studio at the age of ten.In 2005, Van der Palen had his first release with 'Motherf*cking Psycho' on 'DJs Records', followed by the hit 'Lunatick' in 2006. His first major performance was at Defqon.1 2008, but his breakthrough was at X-Qlusive Holland 2009. Van der Palen cites DJ Zany and Michel Pollen as his main musical inspirations and influences. Together with Adaro, Frequencerz and Ran-D, Van der Palen founded his own label in 2015: Roughstate. In January 2016, he got his own X-Qlusive at the Heineken Music Hall. "A crowning achievement", as Van der Palen himself described it. In 2017, B-Front released his first album called 'Beyond Reality'. And last but not least B-Front was responsible for the 2019 Qlimax anthem “Symphony of Shadows”.Muziek in deze video Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. "I don't know how to be someone other than myself" This week on the Finish More Music Podcast we're joined by Daniel Dubb! Self-admitted house music purist, the Canadian virtuoso can count a who's who of electronic music as his fans, with the likes of Steve Lawler, Joris Voorn, Danny Howells, Nic Fanciulli and Lee Burridge being noted supporters of his productions and DJ sets. Having released on labels such as Rejected, Saved, 8Bit, Viva, Plastic City, Toolroom, as well as his own label DV8, Daniel is well-versed in the inner workings of the music industry. In this episode Daniel imparts some valuable insider knowledge, and lends us a unique insight into both the light and the dark sides of the world of underground music. From creating networks in the music industry, to reflections on the impact of social media, to things to watch out for as an up-and-coming artist, this week's episode is packed full of useful tips to help you get ahead, and be prepared for some of the forks along the road. Not only is he a DJ, producer, and label owner, Daniel is also an accomplished mix engineer, and discusses some of his simple but highly effective mixdown hacks to give your tracks that added touch, plus some trusted methods for getting in the zone in the studio. Daniel's chart-topping success and years of experience in the music industry, plus a tireless work ethic and deep commitment to his craft, make it no surprise that there's a TON of great tips for you to takeaway inside this week's podcast. What will you take from it? Key takeaways: Be curious. Be studious. Support those around you who are supportive of you. Be wary of offering out your skills for exposure alone. Don't rush to release your tracks - allow yourself the time to evaluate them. Quotes: “When you finish a track, sit on it for a week or two...a week is not gonna kill your release schedule, or stop a label from signing it. The only thing it's going to do is benefit you in making sure that you are 100% satisfied with the product that you are about to send” "I don't know how to be someone other than myself"
Shaun Parker graduated with a science degree but it was dance that became his vocation. The company creates critically acclaimed dance productions, which are renowned for their integration of stimulating choreographic forms, arresting musical scores and theatrical invention. Their work has graced national and global stages.Parker’s choreographic works include KING, REMOTE, In The Zone, Am I, Happy As Larry and The Yard. He is fêted for his dynamic, youthful work that “is so cutting edge it actually wanders off the edge of any single-word definition”. (The Daily Telegraph)Shaun Parker & Company has found various ways to continue working and maintain connections with both its dancers and its audiences during this time of physical distancing. Shaun is this week’s guest on Stages. He elaborates on creating a dance experience online and the role he relishes; steering an innovative dance company with a passionate commitment to education and creating work that connects with audiences to deliver strong social impact.

Lloyd Newson is best known as the founder and artistic director of DV8 Physical Theatre, in London. Born in Albury, Australia, Lloyd studied psychology and social work at Melbourne University, becoming interested in dance. This interest continued to deepen when he attended the London Contemporary Dance School on a full scholarship. He started DV8 Physical Theatre in 1986. DV8 as a company has had a profound impact on shaping perceptions of dance and physical theatre, with performers of a range of backgrounds, and different types of bodies all having a place in different performance works. Lloyd has tackled a range of issues in his works including male violence and homophobia. In 2007, Lloyd placed an increased focus on the role of text alongside movement in his pieces, seeing him make works such as Can We Talk About This? and JOHN. DV8’s work is highly acclaimed and has won countless international awards. In 2013 Newson was awarded an OBE from the Queen for services to contemporary dance. He has been cited by the Critics Circle as being one of the hundred most influential artists working in Britain during the last one hundred years. In 2016, after 30 years of running DV8, Lloyd made the decision to step back from the company and to reflect on both the achievements and what he still wanted to say with the company. Running a company for 30 years is no easy task, with a small core team supporting an extensive output. 2020 sees the return of DV8 with the seminal work Enter Achilles, produced by Rambert. The work is touring internationally, starting at Adelaide Festival. This is the first ever remount of a DV8 production, first made in 1995. Enter Achilles set in a British pub, explores themes related to masculinity, stereotypes around men, male violence and men’s insecurities. Lloyd doubts that he will ever make another full length work, and has found a sense of freedom outside the daily operation of arts company.

In this episode we talk about Phil's life long journey of learning, how he continues to push himself and mastering the basics in order to be more advanced. In the podcast we talked about Phil's concept of Mastering the Basics to Own the Advanced, a theory that he has been teaching for over 10 years now. This is not a StrongFirst concept, but one that was created by Phil Scarito and is the title of his own series of courses called Mastering the Basics to Own the Advanced.

Having spent the last decade in the UK, Italian producer Gregorio Soave delivers a dance floor oriented, drum n based inspired EP that “DV8” from the usual four to the floor rhythms played in clubs. DCP aka Difid stepped in to remix it and applied his craftsmanship to turn into a more spacey ride, that defines his reality while respecting the original rawer version.

If we’re not getting our questions right, we’re not going to empower young people to create astonishing answers. This is why we’re shifting from framing questions of challenges around ‘problems’ to ‘solve this’. Subtle, but important. And puts us all on the front ‘can do’ foot rather than the back foot of ‘it’s all crappy and we can’t do anything about it.’ Because that’s NOT how this is going to play out, people… - We’re partnering with creative college, DV8!!! We're inviting young people from the college to create film responses to our 4 BIG questions for upcoming ThinkNation at Brighton Digital Festival. Why? Because if we empower young people and give them the opportunities and the framework to DO STUFF, THEY WILL!!! - We have a new member of our Advisory Board! Meet Professor Ruth Blakeley. Not only is she Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Sheffield.
Going out on a bit of a limb for this vlog. WEEKS and WEEKS ago I said I would answer a few questions on scaling a creative company/getting investment for filmmaker Ivon Skula. But I didn't. So I'm doing it here. I also explain why I've taken so long, but don't excuse myself. WHAT WE'VE LEARNED: Be good to your word (and make amends when you fail). So this vlog is for you Ivon - hope it helps. ALSO be good to get other people's views on her questions - sure they'll differ from mine - so please share in comments. WHAT WE'VE DONE: Got out our first podcast "The Z-X Spectrum" with Brandon Relph - we explored all things Love Island: the good, the bad, and the philosophical... WHAT WE'RE DOING: As part of our upcoming event for Brighton Digital Festival, we're working with students from Brighton's creative college, DV8. They'll be creating short films in response to our BIG questions - on how tech can positively impact on homelessness, housing, mental health and sea pollution.
Rob and Diane Perez brought superior brand development and restaurant practices to Lexington, following Rob’s work with heavyweight national brands, including Hard Rock Cafe and Disney. Recently they have opened DV8 Kitchen, a social enterprise restaurant aimed at changing the lives of people recovering from substance abuse by offering second chance employment and encouragement. And, by the way, while producing delicious, crowd-pleasing foods. In this compelling episode, Rob tells us about the path to DV8, and what he hopes comes next.
This interview is with Shelley Lasica, daughter of pioneering Melbourne dance choreographer and teacher, Margaret Lasica (1926-1993). Shelley herself is an amazing contributor to the performing arts scene as a successful choreographer and performer. Born in Vienna, Margret migrated to Australia with her family in 1939. During the 1940s, Margaret studied with Ruth Bergner. Bergner’s work had a political and social undercurrent, drawing upon European and Jewish dance traditions to create modern dance performances. Margret drew influence from Bergner’s work. In 1967, she founded the Modern Dance Ensemble (MDE). MDE performed up until 1981 and then intermittently until 1990. Margret is noted in history as a dancer, choreographer and teacher. Her teaching was exceptional and she fostered a range of incredible talent. Margret was a significant influence on Lloyd Newson, who went on to establish DV8 in the UK. During her life Margret sought to document the history of Modern Dance in Australia. This is collated in the National Library of Australia’s manuscript collection: Margaret Lasica Papers. The University of Melbourne also holds The Margaret Lasica Collection; a collection of books, journals and ephemera relating to her life. Margret died in 1993, leaving behind an amazing legacy. This is a warm and detailed interview covering Margret’s career and ongoing legacy through the recollections of Shelley. Interview conducted by: Jonathan Homsey from Ausdance Victoria.
What is art if not a place where we can push the boundaries of what we know, what we do and what we can say? As his pioneering dance company DV8 developed and broke boundaries, choreographer Lloyd Newson found out that even in art there are limits, and times when no-one wants to speak out. What don’t we want art to talk about? Born in Australia, Lloyd Newson studied psychology and social work at Melbourne University before embarking on a professional career as a dancer and choreographer. He has led and directed DV8 Physical Theatre’s work since its inception in 1986, winning over 50 national and international awards for his dance-theatre and film productions. In 2013 he was awarded an OBE for services to contemporary dance. Newson’s work straddles dance, text, theatre and film. Since 2007 he has specifically focused his attention on making work that combines verbatim text and movement, focusing on issues such as sexuality and religion in To Be Straight With You and Islam and Free Speech in Can We Talk About This?

Michael Bond, the creator of the much-loved Paddington Bear, joins Kirsty Lang. He'll be talking about writing in Paddington's voice for the first time in a new collection of letters to the bear's Aunt Lucy, Love From Paddington. And he reveals his role in the new Paddington film. Documentary film maker Laura Poitras discusses Citizenfour, her film about being contacted by the mystery whistle blower who eventually revealed himself as Edward Snowden. The dance theatre company DV8 premieres a new verbatim dance work, John, at the National Theatre. Artistic Director Lloyd Newson discusses the art of making a dance documentary. And as pumpkins make their annual appearance, Adam Smith considers how what was once beyond the pale in horror films is now unremarkable. Presenter: Kirsty Lang Producer: Sarah Johnson.
In this first of three episodes, the celebrated British choreographer-performer Akram Khan talks about his very early training and performing in kathak, the north Indian classical dance form. At the age of 10 he joins the acting cast of the stage adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, and at 13 he tours the world with Peter Brook's The Mahabharata. His return home at 15 is followed by an extreme and solitary journey into dance. While seeking admission to the contemporary dance program of De Montfort University in Leicester (UK), he discovers the work of Pina Bausch and DV8. This first exposure to contemporary dance leaves him shocked.

Devised theatre, making the stone more stony, art as a lie, depictions of Ariel, boys wearing dresses, sex and sexuality, this conversation goes to lots of interesting places.
