Dr. Krista Scott-Dixon (also known as KSD) is a trained counselor specializing in the psychology of behavior change, with certifications including motivational interviewing, solution-focused, DBT, CBT, and trauma counseling. She's the author of numerous books and accredited nutrition, sleep, stress, and recovery courses. She is our go-to performance psych and works 1-1 with many of our clients seeking to sharpen the mental and emotional skills needed to handle some of the toughest training courses in the world. We've been training people for special operations selection courses around the world for almost 15 years now, and at this point the physical side of that is a predictable process. With sufficient training time, we can reliably get just about anyone to the physical performance levels needed for a given selection course. We've also gotten pretty good at teaching the cognitive skills needed to do well in these kinds of high-stress situations - things like segmenting, compartmentalization, and managing self-talk.But, there's another piece to the puzzle that is just as important, and you can't thinky-brain your way out of it - that's dealing with the emotional challenges of SOF selection. These courses are not just designed to break you down physically and mentally. They also test your emotional resilience. They'll put you in situations that make you doubt your sense of belonging or whether you deserve to be there.Ultimately, many people who quit SOF selection courses do so not because they're missing the physical performance standards but because, at some point, they are overwhelmed by an emotional sense that either they don't belong there, or other people don't think that they belong there, and they believe them. Many of our clients work with Krista to prepare for these emotional challenges in training and bring that resiliency into their courses, just as they do with physical training. This kind of work isn't just important for getting through selection - it also helps people to manage the stresses of their careers in special operations so that they can have long, productive careers and healthy relationships at work and at home. Communications — particularly professional, technical, and educational materials — can easily become boring, unrelatable, or stiff. How do you write, speak, and educate in ways that other people will actually enjoy? And, how do you make the process more meaningful, engaging, and interesting for yourself? These are the kinds of questions I explore with Dr. Krista Scott-Dixon. Dr. Krista Scott-Dixon is an expert coach, communicator, and thought leader in the fitness and health industry. She has more than 20 years in fitness and health coaching under her belt, and 10 years of university teaching and course direction. Krista is currently the Product Director at Simple, a nutrition app with global reach. Previously she served as Director of Curriculum at Precision Nutrition, leading the development of the PN Academy and PN Certifications. She is the author of several books and co-author of textbooks, many of which we worked on together, plus she has an extensive portfolio of academic publications, book chapters, articles, and reports, not to mention own self-published book Why Me Want Eat. Before working with Precision Nutrition, Krista was a researcher and faculty member at York University in Toronto. In the mid-1990s, her website Stumptuous.com was one of the first to promote women's weight training, and since then she's focused on helping people make meaningful change. She has lectured and taught internationally across North America as well as in the UK, Ireland, China, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Krista is undoubtedly a professional communicator, but she has also built her career around making her communications relatable, playful, interesting, and fun (even funny) — even when they cover technical, educational, and/or “serious” material. In our conversation, I dig into Krista's process, sifting through her childhood experiences, her personal beliefs and habits, and some of the methods she uses in her own life and work as both a coach and communicator. Through our conversation, we explore how we can all communicate better by employing humor, empathy, curiosity, experimentation, collaboration, play, and getting out of our own boxes. We cover: → The value of letting your freak flag fly. → Why empathy is non-negotiable for all communicators, and how to cultivate it. → Why interest, curiosity, and skill are such a powerful combination, and how to nurture them. → The danger of waiting for someone else to give you permission to create your thing. → Where good ideas ACTUALLY come from, and the problem with “The Great Man” theory. → The role of practice, rigor, feedback, experimentation, and collaboration in developing and refining your ideas and knowledge… and why you should never try to develop good ideas in isolation. → How to get out of your own box or comfort zone, and why you should seek out unfamiliar and deeply uncomfortable experiences. → The role of play in communications and creative work, and some unusual ways to make your work more playful. → The difference between Creator Brain vs Editor Brain, and why (and how) you need to put the Creator Brain in the driver's seat. → Plus, a fun assignment to challenge writer's block. This episode was too good to only hear once. In this "Best Of" episode, Dr. Krista Scott Dixon joins me in a discussion around working with complicated clients who......don't always do what we say...struggle with even the smallest of tasks...want faster progress...don't prioritize the mindset work you give them...and struggle to open up about their thoughts and feelings (even when you ask incredible questions)....and how very important it is for us to equip ourselves with the skills to be able to navigate these scenarios and learn to feel at home in the uncertainty these conversations often bring. In our conversation we begin to introduce some of these skills...plus offer up a few incredibly powerful perspective shifts I believe every coach needs in order to truly ascend to that next level. This week's show brought to you by: LMNT When coaching endurance runners of all levels to be their best, I always emphasize the need for proper hydration with the right balance of electrolytes. Most athletes I've coached are surprised to learn that their sodium needs are actually much higher than they expected and it's been hurting their performance. Part of the reason athletes need much more sodium than they think is not just because they lose electrolytes through their sweat, but also because athletes tend to eat very healthy diets. They've been told that salt is a bad thing in food and frequently don't get enough for their lifestyle. Much of the science of sodium is based on people who eat highly processed diets which also are very low in potassium. It could actually be the low potassium levels causing the issues that sodium has been blamed for! What is clear is that both sodium and potassium at the proper levels are essential for high performance (and for life in general!). That's why we partnered with LMNT to offer a free sample pack of their electrolyte mix. Head to drinklmnt.com/runnersconnect to get yours now. The Sample Pack includes 8 packets of LMNT (2 citrus, 2 raspberry, 2 orange, and 2 raw unflavored).

Let's face it, most of us would LOVE to work with a full roster of clients who see things exactly the way we do and follow everything we give them...who never challenge our advice or resist our suggestions...and who see incredible results because of it.But in reality? We might be lucky to land a handful of these dreamy clients in our entire career. And what's much more likely? Is that your clients will often feel “complicated”. ...They won't always do what we say...They will struggle with even the smallest of tasks...They will want faster progress...hate the mindset work you give them...And they will DEFINITELY struggle to open up about their thoughts and feelings (even when you ask incredible questions). So the thing is...if we want to make it as a successful coach? We need to equip ourselves with the skills to be able to navigate these challenging clients and learn to feel at home in the uncertainty these conversations often bring.Today, I am joined by Krista Scott-Dixon to begin a new conversation aimed at arming you with these skills...plus offer up a few incredibly powerful perspective shifts I believe every coach needs in order to truly ascend to that next level. ***Dr. Krista Scott-Dixon (also known as KSD) is Director of Curriculum at Precision Nutrition, leading the development of the PN Academy and PN Certifications. Hey guys before I dive into todays episode please head over to my website and check out the new MEMBERSHIP PORTAL, here you get access to over 17 programs, all my eBooks, webinars and discounts on future challenges. I also invite you to join my FREE Facebook group so I can support you in your journey. Finally, head over here to take me up on a FREE nutrition consult. Krista Scott-Dixon, PHD and the Designer of Curriculum at Precision Nutrition (PN). She earned her doctorate in Women’s Studies from York University. She holds counseling certifications from George Brown College and Leading Edge Training, which is certified by the Canadian Psychological Association. Currently, she’s pursuing a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology at Yorkville University in New Brunswick, Canada. I first learned of the work Krista was doing to help real people with real lives understand, embrace, and master the complex issues of nutrition, health, and lifestyle improvement after listening to her podcast on Boom Boom Performance with Cody McBroom. Afterwards the first thing I did was buy her book “Why Me Want Eat” which is for people struggling with food, eating, and body image issues and tackles the concept of disordered eating from a more informal, real-life angle. Part self-exploration guide, part nutrition advice, part workbook, part manifesto, part instruction manual for life. For me this book gave me direction to what my next step was going to be to overcome my eating disorder but was also extremely comforting to know that other people experience these feelings and I am not alone. So guys if there was ever one to share please make it this one, if you enjoy this episode screen shot and share it on your Instagram stories, tag myself @coachdarianbates and Krista @stumptuous and I will personally thank you for doing so.
Matt and Dr. Krista Scott-Dixon, Director of Curriculum at Precision Nutrition, discuss a challenge many are facing right now -- practicing good nutrition habits in this time of crisis. With families locked down and cutoff from their normal eating and exercise schedules, some have struggled to make healthy food choices. Dr. Scott-Dixon offers some advice for staying grounded, nutritionally and mentally, while on coronavirus lockdown. Krista’s tips: Write down your intent for the day, at the beginning of each day. Krista actually likes to call it your commitment. This includes your to-do list, but it’s not limited to it. A commitment could be something broad like, “I’m going to be supportive of someone else today,” or “I’m going to be optimistic today.” Committing to one small thing each day can help you build a more positive mindset. Develop a structure, with small habits. Pick one small thing everyday that you can do to create a sense of order and structure to your day. It can be something as simple as “I’m going to eat lunch at 12:00pm today.” Constructing your routine slowly results in lasting habit changes. Think like a restaurant, and set hours for your kitchen. Krista closes her kitchen between the hours of 2 and 4pm, because in her experience, no good snack decisions are made then! It’s only two hours, she says, so you can hold out until dinner. Create a feedback loop for evaluating your day. Every day, spend a bit of time analyzing what went well (don’t focus on the struggles) and why. Then try to do a little more of that the next day. By bookending your day with a statement of intent and then an evaluation of the positives, you can learn to stay positive and bring some order to an otherwise chaotic world. Krista Scott-Dixon, PhD., fitness and nutrition coach and author, shares wisdom on professional coaching, and how women and women's athletics are reshaping the industry and world.
A solo session here for Oralith who speaks passionately about power and empowerment and the differences between them in our fitness journeys. This episode focuses on how we are sold ideas of strength and beauty but how ultimately real power is hidden within us . Orlaith talks about how ‘taking control' of yourself by following a plan can ultimately take your own power away. The power to eat without guilt , train without the necessity and actually control your own cravings and hunger. She talks about ‘what is fitness doing to your life and for your life' . Finally she chats about what the secondary gain is , you look better but what's the trade off ? Anxiety around food , guilt , self critique , avoiding social situations. A lot of great information here inspired by Krista Scott Dixon from https://stumptuous.com/ and Scott Able from https://scottabelfitness.com/ .

Today we were joined by Krista Scott-Dixon, who shared her wisdom, advice, and expertise regarding food, body image issues, and fitness, especially as it relates to women's issues and gender. Discussions got pretty theory-heavy, but it was all excellent, relevant stuff if you're involved in body or physique transformation in any way.
Motivational interviewing is one of the best tools for helping people overcome obstacles to change. In this episode, I interview one of my idols - blogger, author, behaviour change & disordered eating expert, and provider of no-BS education in fitness and health for women - Krista Scott-Dixon, on why the solution is your problem. We talk about: Krista's unconventional story of disordered eating and how she went from being the girl with glasses who was last in gym class to a leader in fitness and nutrition training. Why the demands on women and need to self-regulate are causing more women to develop disordered eating later in life. How you can tell if your 'healthy' habits are starting to become destructive and whether you are addicted to self-help. Why "the solution is your problem" and why it's so hard to give up control. Why "coming to terms with your body is a form of ninja-crapping" and doesn't mean that you accept yourself. How our cravings for approval, don't feed us. Two things you can do right now to accept your body (hint: these were things that I had no even thought of!). And details on the upcoming Precision Nutrition Level 2 Coaching Certification and how it will help coaches make revolutionary changes in other people's lives.
