Today, we're talking about one of my favorite topics and one I think is super important to extending health span strength training: How to train for lifelong strength, resilience, and performance. Now, I've been in the fitness game for over 30 years, and I've worked with thousands of clients navigating midlife and beyond. I've also learned from some of the best in the business—people like Dr. Rhonda Patrick, Mike Boyle, Alwyn Cosgrove, and Lee Taft—experts who don't just talk theory, but coach real people, get real results, and most importantly, help folks stay injury-free and thriving for the long haul. Because here's the deal—most people train for the wrong reasons. They train to look good. They train to “burn calories.” And while, sure, those things matter… if you're not training for longevity, for strength, for resilience—you're missing the point. So, today, we're breaking down exactly how the top experts train themselves and their clients—and how YOU can start training smarter today.

Got to chat with Alwyn Cosgrove-Owner of Results Fitness in Santa Clarita California-Mentor -Author -International Speaker
Whenever I have longtime friends on my podcast, I struggle to introduce them because I realize just how important they are to me. Alwyn Cosgrove is a household name in the fitness industry. As the owner of Results Fitness and Results University, he also holds the special title as my bridesman. In this episode we had a very open, honest conversation about how the role of a fitness professional has changed with the current state of the world. The skills required to stand out from the crowd aren't things taught in the gym. We talked speaking, program design, pricing yourself what you are worth, and how the coach and client relationship has changed. We wrapped up by talking about how coaches need coaches, and by not wanting to hire someone to overlook your own training/nutrition, it shows you maybe don't believe in your own product. We discuss the importance of that.
Our guest is Alwyn Cosgrove. Alwyn is a world-renowned fat loss expert, author and business mentor based in LA. I came across a quote from my friend and mentor, Alwyn Cosgrove. A Socrates quote...... “Intelligent individuals learn from every thing and every one; average people, from their experiences. The stupid already have all the answers.” As a Strength Coach and as a Strength Athlete, you need to open your mind and learn from ALL experiences and ALL people. You will consistently gain more knowledge while destroying your old self. Every day, you are chasing Greatness. If not, then you are settling for mediocrity. Each one of them have distinct qualities that I believe makes them wonderful leaders. Whether this means as a business owner, in your own training, as a manager, as a speaker, being an icon in the fitness industry or whatever else we are looking to accomplish, we are all leaders.
"99% of sales comes way before the close. The sale will take care of itself if you take care of people" -- Elias Scarr Elias is the membership director at Results Fitness, the gym which previous podcast guest Alwyn Cosgrove runs. As he is the membership director when it comes to sales and the consultation process he knows his stuff inside out. If you listen to this episode, here are a few big things I picked up: - Comparing being an expert vs being good enough in the numerous things that personal trainers need to do. - Creating a benefits list for getting over self-worth issues. - Making the asking for money stage as easy as asking a friend for money for something you have paid for by focussing on building the relationship. - Reframing objections as buying signals, which can be fixed. People who set goals are more successful in life than those who don’t. Research proves it time and time again. But here’s the thing: People who enjoy moderate success set LOTS of goals. And while they may achieve several of those goals, they struggle to define the ones the matter MOST to them. The end result? They don’t have a system in place of prioritizing their BIGGEST, life-changing goals. What exactly is an outcome goal? And why is there only one of them? An outcome goal is a numbers-based objective—like losing 10 pounds or making $1 million. It’s more specific than “losing weight” or “getting rich.” I limit it to just one outcome goal because I want you to be singularly focused on the goal that has the most significant impact on your life. Think of the outcome goal as the bullseye on the target. If you hit the bullseye, it’s worth more than hitting the outside ring 10 times. five pillars of success that take you from planning to measurable results. The fifth pillar is what the 1-2-3 Goal-Setting Formula really takes advantage of: the BIG deadline. Deadlines turn the abstract into the concrete, spur us to action, keep us going through tough times, and move faster toward the finish line And process goals? What are those, and why three of them? We need to use process goals because there is a serious FLAW in only setting outcome goals. Let me explain. A good friend of mine, Alwyn Cosgrove, taught me that we do not control our outcome goals. There are always external circumstances influencing the final outcome. We might lose nine pounds instead of 10, or we might make $900K instead of an extra million. The final outcome is never fully within our control.

Barbell Business - Podcast for gym owners by Barbell Shrugged
Because gym owners almost always love coaching, it’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to do all the hands-on stuff yourself. You love your work, so why would you want to let anyone else take over? This week, we talk to Alwyn Cosgrove of Results Fitness to find the compelling answer to that question. We were thrilled to have the chance to sit down with Alwyn, because he was one of the first people to really convince us of the merits of systemizing our own business. Alwyn helped us explore some of the reasons we choose not to delegate our work or simplify it with systems. A lot of times we think of handing over a task as a form of ‘giving up.’ Alwyn’s response is that “It’s not about idleness. It’s not about stepping out to be lazy. It’s about what if you had to? Could you?” When Alwyn was diagnosed with stage-four cancer, he very quickly figured out how to get all the systems in place that were necessary for his gym to operate optimally in his absence. “I had to move in at UCLA to have a stem cell transplant, right? We had insurance because of the gym, but your bills at home… You still have to pay your rent or your mortgage. You still have to pay your car payment. You still have to pay for everything, right? How do you create a business that runs without you? That’s what you should be doing in the first place.” Alwyn’s gym underwent a thorough systemization under circumstances that were far from ideal. But it worked. In fact, he jokes that he must have been the jam in the system, because business boomed while he was gone. As a result of the groundwork he laid years ago, Alwyn is now able to focus on refining his systems and getting incredible results. Some of his members, for example, have been with his gym for 17 straight years, with the average membership running in the seven-to-ten-year range. Ideally, the only reason someone would chose not to renew their membership is that they’ve moved out of the area entirely. Otherwise, he wants to be the last gym his members will ever join.
There are certain perspectives in life that create awareness to truly help you change. One of them for me was finding out the difference between difficult/easy and difficult/difficult. The first time I heard this was back in the day from my friend Alwyn Cosgrove, then later on again from John Berardi. I have made asking myself two simple questions an ongoing part of my life to help me figure out what I needed to drop and what I needed to do more of. Learn those questions and the perspective that help me eliminate some things while adding others to improve my results in all areas of life. IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN: Why doing "hard" things and working hard may be the reason you're stuck and not getting results Difficult actions have two sides of the coin – find out if you're putting time and effort into the wrong one and how it's taking away from what you want and creating a pattern that's hard to break The ONE thing that creates more stress and anxiety in your life and how to eliminate it The secret to uncovering your roadblocks — the two questions — discover what they are and how to breakthrough What the "opposite day" is and how can it help you clarify what the next step to success The reason why you fall back into old patterns after you start having success, and how to finally break that pattern and reach your potential RESOURCES AND LINKS Vigor Ground Fitness and Performance Luka Hocevar YouTube Channel (Subscribe Here) Thanks so much for joining me this week. The Smarter Sculpted Physique: Training | Nutrition | Muscle Gain | Fat Loss
Alwyn Cosgrove came on to discuss training strategy and program design, and especially some of the most absurd trends in the industry. Key themes were about delivering real results, relentlessly cutting chaff and extraneous fat, getting to the real core actions that will deliver results, and doing those things incredible well.
In episode 28 of the LTB Podcast, Stuart chats to Alwyn Cosgrove from Results Fitness in California. Alongside discussing his why for what he does, Alwyn tells us: - How we need to rethink the way we think about asking our clients for money - What lifetime customer value (LCV) is and what this means to us trainers - Why he feels Results Fitness has done as well as it has - Why knowing your businesses core values is so important and how you can make a start to creating these
If you’re lucky you have one or two great mentors, teachers or coaches who change your life forever. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a handful of them. But, perhaps none have been as impactful as my great friend, Alwyn Cosgrove. Alwyn grew up poor in Glasgow, Scotland. Fighting was essential for survival, so he got a black belt and became a nation champion in Tae Kwon Do. He later became a strength coach and moved to the US, which is how we met at a training workshop in 1996. For the 20 years since he’s been one of my closest friends, biggest supporters and most trusted advisers. Whenever I have a tough decision to make he’s one of the first people I call. I value his opinion and insight that much. He’s helped me get through many tough times, even during his two battles with Stage 4 cancer. When you listen to today’s episode I hope you’ll understand why I hold this man in the highest regard. Topics discussed include: The Sugar Ray Leonard attitude [8:08]. Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s [12:09]. How one tiny decision can change the course of your life [15:47]. A ridiculous game of “would you rather?” [21:57]. Moving from Glasgow to NY to Cali [28:01]. Your Health and Wellness This Week: Strength Training & Self-Care On this week's episode of Open Sky Fitness, award-winning journalist, certified strength and conditioning specialist, and author, Lou Schuler, spoke to Rob about his career and life experiences about getting fit and staying fit for life. Lou has had a career in the fitness journey for more than 20 years and has witnessed major changes and trends in the world of health. But before we get into the interview with Lou, Rob and Devon share some self-care topics. Learn what it means when you judge other people, how you can turn your focus back to you, and when is a good time to help other people in need. Lou Schuler's Fitness Advice On this episode, you'll learn what it was like for Lou to start lifting weights as a teenager with minimal sources available compared to the immense amount of information that you can find today on the Internet and in magazines. Today, As Lou reaches 60 years of age, he's realized that his focus on strength training and fitness has shifted compared to when he was younger. Lou currently works out about 3 days a week and focuses on core stability training and mobility training. By focusing on more isometric exercises, Lou has been able to focus on improving his balance while still staying strong, stabilizing the muscles, and avoiding joint pain. Growing Stronger Over Time Whether you're just beginning to strength train or you're returning to it after a break, it's important to start with the basics and progress over time. Lou's advice is that you shouldn't feel that you need to speed up your workout to lift heavy weights or take on a Cross Fit class. Don't do anything intense until you've mastered the basic movements. Back to the Basics of Strength Training Even if you've been lifting for years, going back to basics with a program that includes completing 2 sets of 12 repetitions can be fatiguing because your body has changed over time and it's not used to doing this exercise. Staying Strong for Life When we're young, and especially if we're involved in sports, we can feel unstoppable. It's a great sensation to feel like you're unbreakable and don't have any limits when it comes to pushing your body's limits. On the other hand, not matter what our age is, we all need to take care of our body's health for life Athletes try to lift more than they can really handle and that's where injury comes into play. As we age, just like Lou, different types of strength training and balancing exercises come into play. At some point in our lives, we begin to prioritize exercises that help us to stabilize our body and condition the muscle to help reduce any type of future injury. If an injury should occur, we want to make sure that our body is strong enough that we can recover quickly. Staying Healthy With Age "There is no turning back the clock. I'll never get back the body that I used to have when I was 30, 40, or even 50. There's just no way." - Lou Schuler A lot of people may believe that they can have this same body forever by taking a special pill, but we have to realize that our bodies will age and we cannot workout at the gym in the same matter that we did when we were younger. As we get older, it can be discouraging to think about everything that our bodies used to be able to do when we were younger that we cannot do now. However, the best thing about gaining experience with fitness and strength training over time is that we know our bodies better than we did before. Now we can suspect when an injury might come up, we know when to slow down, and we recognize when we've reached our limits. We just have to treat our bodies well over time and take care of it the best we can through fitness and nutrition. About Lou Schuler Lou Schuler is an award-winning journalist, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, a contributing editor to Men’s Health magazine (you can find most of my articles here), and author or coauthor of many popular books about diet and strength training. Alwyn Cosgrove @alwyncosgrove is one of the most respected fitness professionals on the globe and someone who I consider a friend and mentor. I knew when I put the mics on that this episode would be an instant classic and a conversation that we couldn’t complete in 30 minutes. I was right! We had such an amazing time talking about fitness, business and philosophy of living life to the fullest that we had to break it into 2 parts. In the first 1/2 we discuss how Alwyn created his training philosophy and built business systems that turned Results Fitness into one of the most successful gyms in America. We also tackle a controversial subject while discussing the business of being a great presenter and why it has become a male dominated field. You may be surprised to hear why there are only a handful of female presenters on the fitness seminar circuit including his wife, Rachel Cosgrove, who is one of my favourites! Results Fitness is all about getting results! Alwyn and I discuss weight loss and what is the driver behind the desire to lose weight. If you don’t get down to the “why” you will never truly get the results. We also share tips for new trainers that want to make the fitness industry a career instead of being a stepping stone to your next job. All this and more in this 1st part of t a 2 parter that is guaranteed to be one of the years most downloaded episodes! Enjoy It! Why do some people find success while other people — people who actually did better in school or had more opportunities — struggle to get by? Nate and Jason talk about honesty, calculated risks, betting on yourself, and showing up to the right places — and how that's led to their success in business and in life. 0:00 — Nate explains why this episode starts at a weird point. 1:35 — The conversation begins and Jason wants to avoid being masturbatory. 3:45 — The guys start to break down the keys to their post-high school success. 8:30 — "I was working in the most soul-sucking job I've ever had, which was as tech support for a major satellite TV company. And that — oh my god — that is like looking into the maw of hell." - Jason 10:19 — "Having you come and basically look around and go 'Dude, are you serious about this?' — that was a good wake-up call and it was definitely something that was very helpful in pulling my shit back on track." - Jason 12:28 — "I took a lot of risks that other people saw as risks that I didn't." - Nate 13:23 — "I was just ambitious and just annoying enough to get on their radar but not enough to piss them off to where they didn't wanna talk to me anymore, and those became my first couple of mentors." 13:50 — Nate's quick story about turning down cute girls, rejecting Alwyn Cosgrove's advice, running sprints, and vomiting in a 12-hour span. 15:40 — Lou Schuler: http://amzn.to/1Kg37MI 16:40 — Nate's book Built for Show: http://amzn.to/1MPjoKl 17:40 — "Successful entrepreneurs, I think they do take a lot of risks, but they never feel as risky to somebody who's an entrepreneur as they would to somebody who is looking at the situation from the outside." - Jason 19:25 — T-Nation: http://bit.ly/1MPk7vc 20:10 — Jason talks about quitting his full-time job, turning down another, and betting on himself. 22:10 — "Oh, I ate so much ramen for the first couple of months." - Jason 24:10 — Jason explains the importance of physically showing up to the right places. 29:15 — Recession Proof Graduate by Charlie Hoehn: http://bit.ly/1Jh2ArC 31:00 — Nate talks about what he would do if his salary disappeared. 37:09 — "The idea is success is fluid so I think it's just a matter of defining it for yourself and then, I don't know, being ok with whatever happens after." - Nate 38:50 — "The goal of a project isn't to launch the project. The goal of a project is to enjoy working on the project." - Jason 40:09 — "The most successful person in the world is still looking toward their next thing." - Jason 40:40 — "I found out that we're technically millennials, which at first kinda made me sad, but now I don't care." - Jason 41:17 — "As many Ws as you can control." – Jason, referring to a quote from Tim Ferriss's *4-Hour Workweek*: "Money is multiplied in practical value depending on the number of W's you control in your life: what you do, when you do it, where you do it, and with whom you do it." http://bit.ly/1NyMsWE 42:22 — "I have to take a piss." - Nate 42:45 — Rate the podcast or leave a review on iTunes: http://apple.co/1Jsj6C3 and be sure to check out the website: http://www.2ftat.com/

First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== chunkybearcub asks via twitter @bengreenfield: what do u think of citruaid citrulline amino acid supplement? Helen asks: Please can I ask about my friend who has had a medical with the following areas of concern; Blood count MCHC 31.8g/dL, Gamma Gtp 167 IU/L and LDL Cholesterol 4.6/total chol 6.7. He is keen to know what these figures mean and what he can do to treat naturally/lifestyle changes. Nick asks: I've read that kombucha should not be taken by pregnant women.. why is that? Chuck asks: I'd like to listen to some audio books while I drive and I know you often recommend some good ones. What are your picks for health and life balance/prioritization/efficiency? In my response to Chuck, I recommend he visit my personal blog at http://bengreenfieldtri.blogspot.com/, and I also recommend Psychocybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. Steve asks: I am an avid follower of your training and nutritional advice, successful ultra-marathon runner and a neurological physical therapist in the UK. My younger brother is soon to return to the UK. He is morbidly obese, has acquired type 2 diabetes while living abroad, and suffers from associated health problems. I would love to get him on the right path to good health and longevity, but frankly the diabetes issues confuses me. Please could you advise of good training and eating strategies, or some good resources to refer to. In my response to Steve, I recommend he look into low-carbohydrate diabetes diet books written by Dr. Richard Bernstein. Patrick asks: I'm getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled out of my head on Thursday, and the dental hygienist has told me some terrifying "facts" about my future nutritional practices. She said I should expect to eat semi-solids like mashed potatoes and applesauce for a couple days. She went on to say that because of the craters (for lack of a better word) that will be left after surgery, I'm forbidden from hard foods for 6 months, including all nuts and seeds! What is your take on this? What are some food suggestions you have that can support 70.3 and IM triathlon training, but won't be as damaging to my dental health? I encourage Patrick to read the SuperHealth diet book by KC Craichy and look into LivingProtein and LivingFuel (read the label), along with this Vitamix/green smoothie video, and the BenGreenfieldFitness Inner Circle. Layla asks: I know CoQ and ubiquinol supplements are recommended for older people for energy and antioxidant benefits, but since these molecules work in the electron transport chain in mitochondria, will they also increase metabolism? I also have a second question. I live somewhere really cold so I'm interested in shifting my metabolism toward heat production. Therefore, I'm wondering if there are any ways for adults to convert white fat to the more metabolically active brown fat. Are there proton uncoupling supplements that act like thermogenin (ucp1)? Craig asks: Whenever I drink from the aero bottle on the bike I get a burning sensation in the back of my throat that feels somewhat like GERD. I know it's not the water source, it's the same one I've been putting in bottles for a decade. What gives? How can I stop it? BTW, great tip using the flexible refrigerator tubing in the aero bottle. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
