Shame is everywhere, and for women, it's a constant, uninvited guest. Join host Gabe Howard and writer Melissa Petro as they explore how shame functions as a tool to keep women in line—dictating what they can be, how they should look, and who they're allowed to become. Melissa reveals the hidden forces at play that make women feel “not good enough,” no matter what they do. She introduces “shame resilience,” a powerful strategy to transform how we see ourselves by embracing our feelings and challenging the stories we've been told. If you're tired of walking the impossible line between “too much” and “not enough,” this episode is for you. Discover how to break free from the labels, live more authentically, and reclaim your power in a world that constantly tries to diminish it. Tune in and start rewriting your own narrative today. “Shame is going to lower treatment adherence. We're not going to follow their orders if we are having feelings of shame. And also, shame, just shame itself is bad for our health. So, when I say shame is killing us, I don't mean it's just really making us feel sad about ourselves. It's not. It's impacting our physical health, and it needs to be addressed on an individual but also societal level.” ~Melissa Petro To learn more -- or read the transcript -- visit the official episode page. Our guest, Melissa Petro, is a journalist whose writing has been featured in The Washington Post, Allure, Cosmopolitan, Rolling Stone, Good Housekeeping, The Guardian, InStyle, and many other national publications. Roxane Gay has written extensively about everything from Black feminism to office culture – and now she tackles a new topic: gun ownership. The author and contributing opinion writer for The New York Times joins host Krys Boyd to discuss her surprise at the thrill of shooting, why owning a gun is a political act for a Black American and what “stand your ground” laws mean to her. She writes about this in “Stand Your Ground,” an ebook/audiobook original essay found on the subscription service Everand.

There are more guns than people in the United States. About half of the guns in the world are owned by Americans. About 45,000 Americans die from gunshot wounds each year, and more than 100,000 survive shootings. We view guns as inherently masculine, and there is distinct racial coding in how we perceive guns and gun use in this country. Still the fastest growing demographic of gun owners is women, and Black women in particular. In a new essay on the Everand platform called “Stand Your Ground: A Black Feminist Reckoning with America's gun Problem”, Roxanne Gay unpacks gun culture and gun ownership in America from a Black feminist perspective.

I'm not sure there's anyone quite like Kate Mosse. The driving power behind the Women's Prize for Fiction which is now in its 27th year (the winner was VV Ganeshananthan's Brotherless Night) and now the Women's Prize for Non-Fiction (whose inaugural winner was Doppleganger by Naomi Klein), she also manages to write a book a year (and they're not small!) The latest of which, The Ghost Ship, is just out in paperback. In tribute I thought we'd replay one of the earliest The Shift conversations with her. This one is from February 2021 when The Shift was but a baby!...You'd be hard pushed to think of anyone who has done more for women writers than this week's guest. Twenty five years ago, Kate Mosse was working in publishing when she looked around and realised that everyone on all the awards shortlists looked familiar - pale, male and stale. The result - the Women's Prize for Fiction - has just celebrated its 25th anniversary, and given a much-needed voice to women's writing.Kate is also a bestselling author of 7 novels and 2 short story collections including the millions-selling global smash hit Labyrinth and her new book, The City of Tears. Kate is kind, funny and candid as she talks about how easily women's history is erased (and why we should never forget the women who went before us), her “other” job as a full-time carer - and why caring is a feminist issue - the devaluing of women's work, being a pathological optimist and why she CANNOT WAIT to be 60. Trigger Warning: Kate also speaks honestly about bereavement and grief, three quarters of the way through the episode.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including The Midpoint Plan by Gabby Logan and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com• And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Thanks to fearmongering and misinformation, being a feminist nowadays comes with all kinds of political baggage that leaves many running away from this label. But put quite simply, a feminist includes anyone who supports equal rights for women. So if you believe that you or the women in your life should have equal rights to a man, then congratulations, you're a feminist!   Viewing ADHD through a feminist lens allows us to see how gender factors into our experiences, from diagnosis and treatment to ongoing impact. Feminism allows us to question gendered expectations, to see them as social constructions that bear no basis in reality, to stop conflating them with virtue, and to start embracing our uniqueness.    Women with ADHD have so many gifts to offer, the problem is we cannot recognize and celebrate those gifts without a more level playing field. Join me this episode as I take a closer look at the impacts of inequality on ADHD women and explore some ways to level out the playing field and start taking on more roles that generate positive emotions and self-worth. This week we're back with an episode all about aging, and the societal expectations for women when they dare to get older. Why are men given the green light to age while we are crushed by the pressure of staying youthful? Why do men get a free pass for wrinkles, but botox is our best friend? Is this just insecurity and vanity, or is it the patriarchy at work? Join us to find out (and to hear about Sam crying in a mall while full of baby fever lmao)

Today I speak with my friend Adelaide Meadow. Adelaide is a traditional midwife, functional medicine practitioner & women's movement specialist. Adelaide's work challenges everything you've been taught about the female pelvis. Adelaide believes that pelvic health is the apex of women's wellbeing and discusses why women need to prioritize it, even if our doctors, yoga teachers and other wellness experts won't. According to Adelaide this is not just a matter of health - this is a feminist issue. As young girls doing ballet and gymnastics, we're instructed to tuck our tailbones and suck in our ribcage, advice that contradicts our natural physiological alignment. This continues into adulthood where we're often told to exercise and move like men. Whether we're squeezing into skinny jeans and high wasted leggings or constantly sucking in our bellies the message is clear: be smaller and take up less space. We discuss in depth how our female socialization undermines our vitality and why taking back our pelvic health can mean taking back our power. Adelaide's course:

Apostasy is a feminist issue

This week's Accent of Women looks at apostasy – the practice of changing or leaving your religion.Apostasy is a critical demand for the international workers movement – it goes to the heart of collective consciousness, especially working class consciousness. It is about breaking the chains of religion that suppress and oppress, particularly women. But it is also an extremely difficult conversation to have, in this political climate. Atheism and the rejection of religion entirely, arises with scientific and technological development – and these two things are often conflated with western progress. So then, the conversation about apostasy is often appropriated by liberals, right-wing feminists, and quite frankly, racists. And yet, apostasy is a critical demand of the international workers movement.Accent of Women attempts to have this conversation. There are progressives right across the world, challenging the hold of religion on their lives, their societies, and their struggles for liberation. They live in places like Egypt, Iran, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia. These socialists, these progressive, require our solidarity. In exactly the same way, that Muslims under atttack in Australia, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, France, need our solidarity in defence of their right to practice their religion.

Produced by Coding Rights for the series Privacy is Global. What would you do if an AI system told you that your daughter will get pregnant in the next six months? Well, some families in Salta, Argentina, almost had the experience with the implementation of an AI system designed to “predict” unplanned pregnancies in teenagers based on where they live. It sounds like science fiction, but it is not. Our data bodies are progressively feeding different kinds of A.I. systems used by governments to "predict" future situations that can actually influence how we access public services and exercise our rights. Could the ever-increasing system of data collection, processing and prediction actually end up dictating who we are and who we will become? Considering the powerful forces pushing for these automated systems, it is possible that these predictions are more likely to amplify and automate existing inequalities and societal prejudices. In this episode we will explore some reasons why we should consider A.I as a feminist issue, and why artificial intelligence approaches and policies will continue to influence topics at the heart of several feminist agendas. Join us to listen to Coding Rights founder directress Joana Varon in conversations with enlightening decolonial feminists Paz Peña, consultant in technology, gender and social justice, speaking from Chile from Chile, and Paola Ricaurte, associate professor at Tecnologico de Monterrey and co-founder of Tierra Comum Network, speaking from Mexico.

She is kind, funny and candid as she talks about how easily women's history is erased (and why we should never forget the women who went before us), her “other” job as a full-time carer - and why caring is a feminist issue - the devaluing of women's work, being a pathological optimist and why she CANNOT WAIT to be 60.
