Now these were grandparents in their over the late 20s, but life at the time has been described as, you know, brutish and short. People just didn't live very long. And all of a sudden, there was the grandparents gradually appearing on the scene. And they were able to teach, for example, you know, how do you plant seeds? So to have the better chance of a successful crop. As one example, I'm sure there was all kinds of things like hunting and so forth. And they were the first ones who were being there for their grandkids and instilling the wisdom required to help lead a successful life. So that was the genesis of this. January 15, 1919 was an unusually warm day in Boston, a welcome change from the typically cold temperatures Bostonians had experienced in the previous days. A little after 12:30 pm, the residents of the city's North End neighborhood were going about their usual routines when all of the sudden they felt the ground shake, followed by a loud rumbling roar, as though the train had gone off the tracks. Then, without warning, a wave of molasses—reportedly fifty feet high—flooded the neighborhood with more than 2.5 million gallons of syrup, destroying buildings, toppling the nearby elevated train line, and killing twenty-one people. One of the lesser told and remembered stories in Boston's history, the great molasses flood of 1919 caused untold damage to one of the city's oldest neighborhoods and injured more than 150 people, in addition to the twenty-one dead. Yet for an event so remarkable and strange, it is still unknown precisely what caused the Purity Distilling Company's molasses storage tank to burst and dump its contents across the North End, making it one of Boston's most bizarre pieces of folklore.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesBoston Daily Globe. 1919. Karen Read's Trial Isn't Waiting—Federal Judge Shuts Down Delay Bid A federal judge just slammed the brakes on Karen Read's latest attempt to delay her state trial, ruling that her ongoing appeal in federal court isn't a good enough reason to push back the proceedings. That means the clock keeps ticking toward April 1, when her second trial is set to begin in Dedham, Massachusetts. Let's break it down. Karen Read's legal team had asked for a nearly month-long delay—from April 1 to April 28—arguing that they shouldn't be picking a jury while her federal appeal is still unresolved. Why? Because that appeal could potentially drop two of the three charges she's facing: second-degree murder and leaving the scene of personal injury and death. If those charges get tossed, that obviously changes what the jury would be hearing—and the defense says they can't pick a fair panel until that's sorted. But Judge Beverly Cannone wasn't buying it. She denied the request flat-out. Her reasoning? Jurors have already been summoned for duty starting April 1, and if they're seated by April 25, then maybe—maybe—she'll revisit the situation with Read's attorneys. But until then, trial prep continues as scheduled. And it's not just a handful of people showing up either—we're talking 275 potential jurors per day being called in that week. That's a small army. Now, that's not the only courtroom drama happening around Read. There's also a new ruling allowing some of her private communications to become evidence in the trial—specifically, her messages with blogger Aiden Kearney, better known online as “Turtleboy.” A judge has cleared the way for prosecutors to use certain photos, videos, and data from April to October 2023 that allegedly point to witness intimidation or attempts to influence the family members of witnesses. That hearing had a bit of a scene, too. Special prosecutor Hank Brennan argued in favor of using the messages before Read even showed up. When she did, she sat down alongside Kearney and his lawyer—definitely not your typical courtroom seating chart. Meanwhile, prosecutors are also digging into communications between Read and her own attorney, David Yannetti. They've filed a motion asking the court to hand over their text messages exchanged between January 28 and February 2, 2022. That's just days after Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe—Read's boyfriend at the time—was found dead. Why do they want those texts? Prosecutors argue that Read waived her attorney-client privilege, at least for that specific period, because she spoke publicly about those conversations. They're pointing to her interviews with Vanity Fair, Boston Magazine, and her appearance in that recent HBO Max and ID docuseries as proof. Essentially, the state is saying: if you're going to talk about it on camera, we get to look at the receipts. To rewind for context—Karen Read is a 45-year-old financial analyst who was living in Mansfield back in 2022. She's accused of hitting O'Keefe with her SUV and leaving him in the snow to die outside a home in Canton. She's pleaded not guilty to all charges: second-degree murder, leaving the scene of injury or death, and manslaughter while under the influence. Her first trial ended in July 2024 with a hung jury—no verdict either way. Read will be back in court Tuesday at 11 a.m. for a pretrial hearing. Unless something dramatic changes, jury selection for her second trial begins April 1 at Norfolk Superior Court. #KarenRead #JohnOKeefe #TrueCrimePodcast #CourtroomDrama Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? I was very interested to hear the profound near-death experience (NDE) of Dr. Michael Hessian, a renowned cardiac physician. Dr. Hessian shares his journey from battling a severe pneumonia that led to a near-death experience, to his astonishing recovery and the incredible transformation in his personal and professional life. I was fascinated to hear Dr. Hession talk about what he could perceive when we was in a non-communicative, comatose state. Although he could not speak, he was well aware of what was happening around him. He talks about the different approaches people had to interacting with him and how that impacted his recovery. This is a must-listen for anyone who may find themselves in the position of caring for someone who is non responsive. Discover how his NDE reshaped his relationships, deepened his empathy, and led him to advocate passionately for patients who are unable to communicate. Don't miss insights on the significance of compassionate care in the ICU, the role of prayer, and the practice of mindfulness meditation. Last September, Eitan Hersh, a political science professor at Tufts University in Boston, tried something that hasn't been done before: he created a class teaching conservative ideas to students of his private liberal college. He felt there was a gap in the school's poli-sci curriculum, sensing that graduates were leaving without understanding the central ideas of the political right. He included articles from the National Review, videos of Tucker Carlson and essays by conservative Black intellectuals such as Glenn Loury and Thomas Sowell. The results, summarized in a recent longform feature in Boston Magazine, hint at the effectiveness of teaching politically diverse opinions on campus: most students (of this admittedly self-selecting group who are even willing to engage with the curriculum in the first place) did seem to positively grapple with the ideas, understand them better and have reasonable debates in an open academic forum. As pro-Palestinian tent protests continue dividing post-secondary institutions across North America, and political polarization feels more prevalent than ever before, we're joined by Hersh on Bonjour Chai to discuss what he learned by running this "conservative thought experiment" over an entire semester. Credits Bonjour Chai is hosted by Avi Finegold and Phoebe Maltz Bovy. Zachary Kauffman is the producer and editor. Michael Fraiman is the executive producer. Our theme music is by Socalled. What are you retiring to? Don't drift into it. Design it. Join us in the next Design Your New Life in Retirement group program starting April 26th. __________________________ I've just completed my second year as a grandfather. Like anyone finishing their sophomore year, I know twice as much as I did a year ago, but still have a lot to learn. In my quest to learn more, I came across this article in the New York Times - How to be a Better Grandfather - and discovered Ted Page. When he became a grandfather at 55, he looked online for guidance and discovered - well, not much. So he created the website and blog Good Grandpa. Ted's writing a book that's coming out next year sharing stories and wisdom from grandfathers on the #1 thing they've learned that will help nurture the next generation. ________________________ Bio Ted Page is the creator and editor of Good Grandpa. Ted Page is a storyteller, performer and marketing executive. His non-fiction stories have appeared in Boston Magazine and the Boston Sunday Globe Magazine, and his book of true family stories, The Willoughby Chronicles, was published by 3 Swallys Press in 2017. Ted is a Co-Founder of Captains of Industry, a leading boutique marketing consultancy based in Boston. Ted won a Telly award for The Institute for Back-up Trauma, starring John Cleese—who looks stunning in a red dress. Ted and his colleagues at Captains of Industry created The Climate Declaration for CERES, which was signed by over 1,700 corporations globally including Apple, Nike, Starbucks, GM and Levis. Ted lives outside Boston with his wife, Nancy, who continues to put up with him after 35 years. They have two children and four grandchildren. _________________________ For More on Ted Page GoodGrandpa.com What's the #1 thing you've learned that can help the next generation? Contact Ted Page: ted@goodgrandpa.com _________________________ Mentioned in This Episode The Parrot Sketch ________________________ Podcast Episodes You May Like The Long Distance Grandparent – Kerry Byrne PhD The Mindful Grandparent – Dr. Shirley Showalter _________________________ Wise Quotes On the Next Generation "The mission of the blog is to nurture the next great generation. So I'm a Boomer, sort of at the tail end of the Baby Boomers, born in 1959. And for us, we always just kind of looked up to our parents as what Tom Brokaw had dubbed the Greatest Generation. He wrote this terrific book, The Greatest Generation, and that's very understandable. They won World War II, they survived The Great Depression. They were great. They were fantastic. And I revered my father and mother. I revered the one grandfather that I knew. But when I saw these little kids starting to appear on the scene, our grandkids, I thought: What if they're going to be the greatest generation of all time? And what can we do to help them become the greatest generation, not just here in the United States, but around the world. We have tools that our parents didn't have." On Continuous Learning "But then of course, I said, Well, John, let me tell you what I'm up to. I'm writing a book and I'm gathering wisdom from elders and asking everyone what the number 1 piece of wisdom is - and he just jumped in and he said, 'Well, that's easy. I'll tell you.' And I'm like: Great! Mr. John Cleese, one of the greats, is going to share his number one thing. And he said: 'It's more important to find the truth that it is to know the truth.' And when I asked him to unpack that a little bit, he said, well, Newtonian mathematics and physics was accepted without question for hundreds of years. And that along comes Einstein, and it's all upended. And then just within Einstein's life, there's quantum physics. It's the constant learning that matters. It's the seeking the truth. And sometimes when you believe something's the truth, it blocks you off from continuous learning and exploration.
