With its mix of martial arts, humor, mutant villains, and pizza-loving heroes, the show became a huge pop-culture hit and helped launch toys, movies, and more. Before everyone's favorite heroes in a half-shell wore brightly colored bandanas and ate pizza for every meal, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were black-and-white underground vigilantes. Eastman and Laird drew on a variety of influences to create something that starts with the energy of self-serious parody before transitioning into the violent yet goofy comic series that would ultimately launch a goofy (but still sort of violent) cartoon empire. This collection contains the first 8 published issues from 1984-85, which includes a Raphael one-shot that introduces hockey stick enthusiast Casey Jones. From Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman's creation of mutated turtles wielding nunchucks, the history of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles starts with humble, and slightly dark origins, but they would evolve from comic book characters to beloved animated icons and become their own pop culture phenomenon. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie franchise in total has accumulated $1.15 billion across six movies from three studios since 1990, and so when Paramount were looking to reboot existing IP, it made total sense to go for the heroes in a half shell, and to get permanent teenager Seth Rogen aboard.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem blends 2D and 3D elements to create a fresh visual experience that sets it apart from previous Turtles adaptations, and for the first time uses actual teenagers to voice the Turtles, capturing their essence and making their teenage struggles relatable and authentic. It addresses themes of family and acceptance, resonating with audiences through the Turtles' journey to find their place in the world, as well as finding mutants just like themselves along the way. While the visuals are iconic, the film's soundtrack might be even more so, which features classic East Coast hip hop tracks, and a bit of Vanilla Ice's iconic 'Ninja Rap' from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. EPISODE 338 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Dark Knight Returns style! We go over the 2020(ish) mini series The Last Ronin. This takes place in a bleak future version of our world, where only one turtle is still alive, and he is fighting to avenge his fallen brothers and father.  It was a hit story and mostly very well received by fans! There is a very clear influence from Frank Miller's mid-1980s Batman story The Dark Knight Returns, but it's still very much a TMNT story, albeit one in the "mature, violent" category. Kevin Eastman collaborated on this, using an outline he and Peter Laird had done in 1987 as a starting point. Along with writer Tom Waltz and a cadre of brilliant arists (Esau and Isaac Escorza, Ben Bishop as well as Kevin Eastman), they craft a dark post-apocalyptic (not technically, but it feels like a fallen world) landscape. We visit most of the main cast of Turtles lore (in the comics) one way or the other.  Despite all the harshness and sad turns, it's very fun! In Loose Screws, we talk about Batman: Dark Patterns, which Kevin loves (and Will has not read).

EPISODE 336 - We are at issue 11 of the original run of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Comics. April and the gang are recovering in a New England farm. April writes in a diary, and we see through her eyes how each of the other characters recovers from the crushing defeat they had at the hands of Shredder last issue. It's a contemplative, emotional and dare we say it --- extremely patient and grown-up issue! The comic that started at least partly as a laugh and a lark has matured into a full world with feelings and integrity! We love this issue! In a way, this is the end of the first era of these comics. From this point on, it's rare that both creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird would be involved at the same time making the comics. There are some exceptions (We will cover the trilogy they did the next year in our next episode). But this is the end of their initial run. We forgo Loose Screws this episode to instead discuss a "Relevant Screw." We discuss the most successful of the Turtle rip-off comics: Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters. is it good?

This is a stand-alone adventure in which the young turtled and splinter help an old man pass on the honoable samurai magic of his family to his grandson. We are seeing Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird pull back from working on the comic. This issue they wrote and helped ink but did not do the pencils for. As the Turtles get more popular, this will be the pattern! Next episode we go over the one-shot comics for Leonardo, Donatello and Michaelangelo.  For Loose Screws,  Will talks about the Marx Brothers and Kevin talks about The Knives by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.  -------------- Subscribe for monthly bonus episodes at screwitpodcasts.com Email us at screwitcomics@gmail.com

Over four decades ago, little did writer and artist Kevin Eastman or his co-creator Peter Laird think their stand alone, self-published comic about 4 mutant turtles well-trained in martial arts would become the global, multibillion dollar franchise it is today.  Kevin describes his appreciation of meeting original and new generations of fans at various conventions around the world. Plus he shares insights for aspiring creators on what it takes to achieve artistic and publishing success. Most of all he answers the question where the inspiration of turtle superheroes came from based on his early childhood fascination with chelonians. Animal Care Software

Comic Book Creator and LEGEND!  (Recorded live at Tucson Comic Con Sunday, August 31, 2025) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Crow, Heavy Metal Magazine Born in Portland, Maine in 1962 Kevin Eastman began drawing at a very young age, copying children's books, and reading comics. Inspired by master storyteller Jack Kirby, and later by self-publishing creators Richard Corben, creating his own characters and comics became an obsession. Born in Portland, Maine in 1962 Kevin Eastman began drawing at a very young age, copying children's books, and reading comics. Inspired by master storyteller Jack Kirby, and later by self-publishing creators Richard Corben, creating his own characters and comics became an obsession. In the late 70's and early 80's, self-published “Mini Comics” became a main artistic outlet, and while soliciting illustration work from local fanzines in Northampton Massachusetts, he met like-minded creator Peter Laird and the partnership studio, Mirage Studios was formed. Less than a year later in the middle of a late-night drawing session, Eastman doodled a new character he dubbed a “Ninja Turtle” to make Laird laugh—several sillier sketches and a final drawing of four characters later “Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” had officially entered the universe! Self-published in May of 1984 the first issue sold out of its 3000 copies overnight and quickly became a fan favorite. Catching the eye of Merchandising Agents and Hollywood Producers, Eastman and Laird maintained full control of their creations while guiding them through Toy Licensing, TV Series adaptation, as well as Feature Films, and by early 1990 the TMNT's were number one in all three categories. In between TMNT projects, Eastman launched a creator friendly publishing company, “Tundra Publishing” where projects like “The Crow” “From Hell” “Madman” and “Understanding Comics” first flourished, as well as purchased and published the world renowned “Heavy Metal Magazine” for more than twenty-five years. In 2020 based on an original 1987 concept by Kevin and Peter, Kevin adapted and launched The Last Ronin with longtime TMNT Writer/Co-Writer Tom Waltz. The epic tale quickly became the TMNT publishing event of the decade, both a critical success, and a New York Times Best Seller. The series continued with The Last Ronin: Lost Years in 2023 and 2024The Last Ronin II: Re-Evolution. When not having way too much fun writing and drawing on new TMNT projects, he launched a new maxiseries with Image Comics entitled, Drawing Blood as well as companion limited series the Radically Rearranged Ronin Ragdolls, with co-creator David Avallone, and artists Ben Bishop and Troy Little.   Thanks to “THE BEST FANS ON THE ENTIRE PLANET!” according to Eastman, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continue to find their way into the hearts and imaginations of kids, large and small more than four decades later. Cowabunga! In 2025 Kevin, his wife Courtney and Team Eastman will be visiting comic conventions and signings around the world, ensuring they are always accessible and able to connect with fans as we all continue to Shellebrate the awesome legacy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Opnames vinden nu plaats in Glasgow.Timestamps:00:00:00 Nerd Culture #22100:00:17 Wat gaan we vandaag doen?00:00:50 Magic: The Gathering00:07:55 Castlefest KCD2 panel00:14:13 Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End00:24:16 Stick00:28:53 Steven Spielberg: A Retrospective00:34:39 The Office00:36:28 The Paper Trailer00:41:01 Gerechtigheid voor Gina Carano00:44:27 Lightsabertje kopen?00:49:46 Star Wars Starfighter voegt opnieuw grote naam aan cast toe00:52:10 Zin in Sicario 3? Welcome, all True Believers, to another episode of the Video Store Podcast. This week, I've got four films showcasing the superhero genre, long before the big superhero boom of the late 90s/early 00s that's still going strong today. Put on your mask, your spandex, and join me on the couch for a movie marathon that's, well, super!Batman: The Movie (1966)First up is Batman: The Movie from 1966. A spinoff of the popular TV show, this theatrical film is one for the ages. Still fun and funny, Batman: The Movie is a film that the whole family can sit down and enjoy, whether they've seen any of the Adam West/Burt Ward TV series. Make a bowl of popcorn and sit down with your partner in crime-fighting to enjoy Batman: The Movie. Dick Tracy (1990)One of the more underrated films of this era is 1990's Dick Tracy, directed by and starring Warren Beatty. This is a noir detective story in yellow. Filmed like a living comic book with a score by Danny Elfman, songs by Stephen Sondheim and Madonna, Dick Tracy is a film not to be missed. Put on your yellow trenchcoat, and I'll join you on the couch for a comic book classic that too few people have seen. I'm on my way! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)Order a pizza and settle in for a fun action comedy that's sure to please everyone. 1990's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brings the comic by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird to life with puppetry and costuming by Jim Henson's creature shop, a great soundtrack, and fantastic stunt and action sequences. You'll love every second of being a turtle with this film. The Phantom (1996)Charming pulpy goodness awaits you when you push play on The Phantom from 1996. Starring Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson, Treat Williams, and Patrick McGoohan, this is another underrated classic of comic book film lore not to be missed. Join the very first superhero to wear spandex and slam evil with The Phantom. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! This post is public so feel free to share it. This is a public episode. Well, we were ready to have a very positive episode, but here we are! Xbox has gone all the way ahead of most of the competition and confirmed the following. Console and accessories prices are jumping immediately. Xbox game prices will reach $80 by the end of the year. In a world where the first party is mostly producing divisive titles sitting in the ~80 open critic range, you have to imagine Xbox's financial situation can't be in a brilliant stop to step on a rake ahead of its competition. Yet, that's where things get even more interesting. Xbox's Q3 2025 results saw them at the industry's top publisher while also being the leader in games sold on PlayStation with at least four of their titles in the top 10. Xbox wants their money and the Dukes have plenty of thoughts on this. Is this going to push even more people into Game Pass? Will this give birth to a free tier of Game Pass? What of Cloud Streaming's growth when consoles are becoming extremely pricey. Meanwhile, it's already May and it feels as if we have enough fantastic games to begin our voting on Game Of The Year! Expedition 33 is the talk of the town alongside Oblivion and rightfully so, but it's fascinating just how many incredible experiences surround them. Unlikely heroes in Last Defense Academy, sleeper indie hits in Towerborne, and much more are around every corner. Who has time for all of this? Hell if we know, but we're just happy to be on the ride 2025 is taking us on.Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement.0:00:00 - Intro0:06:28 - Health Is Wealth0:36:44 - Oblivion reaches 4 million players0:41:49 - Expedition 33 has sold 1 million copies0:56:38 - People Can Fly's Project Maverick revealed1:02:58 - Borderlands 4 gets new release date1:08:47 - Wuchang Fallen Feather launches on July 24th, 20251:10:56 - Robocop: Rogue City - Unfinished Business launches on July 17th, 20251:12:37 - FBC: Firebreak launches on June 17th, 20251:16:41 - Tainted Grail: Fall Of Avalon leaves early access on May 23rd1:19:53 - Baldur's Gate 3 director on AI1:29:16 - TMNT Splintered Fate is coming to Xbox and PlayStation1:37:31 - Kevin Eastman on the TMNT Last Ronin video game1:41:19 - Capcom teases Resident Evil 91:44:18 - Splinter Cell: Blacklist randomly gets Steam achievements1:47:50 - Elden Ring passes 30 million sales1:50:11 - Microsoft Q3 Results1:57:06 - Expedition 332:34:24 - Marathon2:54:19 - Oblivion Remaster3:16:26 - Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy3:22:29 - Xbox price increase4:04:00 - Respawn suffers more layoffs and cancellations4:19:08 - Game Pass Pick Of The Week Learn more about your ad choices. Mark Bodē will be at History of the Bay Day Oct. 19th at the Midway SF with Souls of Mischief, Mob Figaz, Kamaiyah & more - tickets: https://www.tixr.com/groups/midwaysf/events/history-of-the-bay-113087 -- Mark Bodē is the son of cartoonist Vaughn Bodē, a pioneer of the underground comix scene. A contemporary of artists like Robert Crumb, Vaughn created characters like Cheech Wizard, the Bodē Lizards, and the Bodē Broads. Known for his Erotica series of art, Vaughn ventured into psychedelic art and deep spirituality. Although he died when Mark was only 12, Vaughn taught his son to follow in his footsteps and pursue a career as an artist. Mark kept his father's characters alive and also created his own comics like "Miami Mice." This led him to work with Kevin Eastman on the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. As his father's character started appearing in New York subway graffiti, Mark embraced the works of writers like Dondi, Seen, Zephyr and Revolt. With roots in San Francisco, Mark has also been a big part of the Bay Area graffiti scene while also bringing his father's characters into murals, tattoos, animation, and much more. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- Filmed at @dyingbreedsf 3045 24th Street, San Francisco - graffiti supplies, original clothing and more --- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Intro 01:52 Art commissions 05:29 Vaughn Bodē's early life and career 13:07 Underground comix of the 60s 16:23 Erotica 20:35 Mark learning from his father 26:06 Psychedelic rock, David Bowie 31:14 Ralph Bakshi 35:39 Vaughn's passing 39:08 Mark's early comic art 43:31 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 46:31 Bodē characters in graffiti 57:23 Bay Area graffiti 01:00:15 Future projects --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support
