In this episode, Paul Laursen, Paul Warloski, and Marjaana Rakai tackle one of the least understood but critically important VO2 max limiters: the lungs. From the phenomenon of exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia (EIH) affecting 50% of elite athletes to practical methods for respiratory muscle training, the trio breaks down the science of lung function and its real impact on athletic performance. Whether you're curious about lung size, high-performance breathing tools, or simply how to get more oxygen into your bloodstream, this episode offers actionable insights and an engaging discussion around a key pillar of endurance capacity.Key Episode TakeawaysLung function can limit VO2 max, especially in elite athletes experiencing EIH.Environmental irritants like smoke and pollution can compound oxygen saturation issues.Four key mechanisms cause EIH: ventilation-perfusion mismatch, high cardiac output speed, physiological shunting, and alveolar hypoventilation.Training respiratory muscles can reduce the impact of EIH and improve performance.Tools like the Breathe Way Better bag and PowerBreathe help train lung musculature.Lung size correlates with body size and can impact VO2 max, especially in smaller-stature individuals.Women are more likely to experience EIH due to generally smaller lungs.VO2 max improvements also aid in submaximal performance by increasing efficiency.Paul Warloski - Endurance, Strength Training, YogaMarjaana Rakai - Tired Mom Runs - Where fitness meets motherhood.

A Tribute to Momma Durkin—My Top 10 Memories of Mary “Muffy” Durkin | Ep. 422

Todd Durkin IMPACT Show

Today's episode is one of the most special and sacred I've ever recorded. My dear mom, Mary “Muffy” Durkin—aka Momma Durkin—passed away on April 5th, 2025, at the age of 91. And while I knew this day would come, nothing quite prepares your heart for the final goodbye. Today, I wanted to share with you my heart, along with some never-heard stories before that I think are going to make you smile and understand a woman who had tremendous IMPACT on me, my 7-brothers and sisters, and many others. This one's for her! I dedicate this episode to honor and celebrate her incredible 91-years of life…a life full of grit, love, sweetness (literally), unwavering faith, and deep sacrifice. Mom was the rock, the glue, the angel on Earth who raised 8 kids as a single mom, worked as a private duty nurse, and never once let life's tough circumstances dim her joy or love. In this episode, I share my “Top 10 Favorite Memories of Momma Durkin” (and a few extras I just couldn't leave out). Here is some of what you will hear about: The time she funded my massage therapy school when I had nothing. How she handcrafted over 100 “Get Your Mind Right” needlepoint signs in 2019-2020. Her legendary “sugar water” and 12-teaspoon coffees (no joke). Her love of cruising—and the infamous Bermuda family cruise with 27 Durkin's! That unforgettable moment she almost died after crashing my huddle at a Perform Better conference a few years ago… and LIVED to tell about it. One of the most self-less things she ever did when we moved houses when I was going into High School. One of the most amazing gifts she ever game me and my family in 1994. What made me almost smoke my first cigarette with Mom. Why she broke a spoon over my butt when I was a kid. The late-night conversation just hours before she passed… where she left me with words I'll treasure forever. We laughed, we cried, we reflected, and we celebrated. That's what this episode is all about. I pray it inspires you to call your mom (or someone you love) today. Say what needs to be said. Love out loud. Thank you to all of YOU who have reached out over the past week with texts, DMs, prayers, and love. My family and I are beyond grateful. Momma Durkin, I love you with all my heart. And I promise, I'll keep making you proud. If you find value in today's episode, please make sure you share it. Please forward it to your friends and family and share it on your social media. Have you ever gotten up one morning, opened your door, and found someone ready to tow your car away? That's exactly what happened to Billy Hofacker, and it led him to discover he was $130,000 in debt. Now, years later, he's a financial coach helping fitness professionals avoid the same money struggles he faced himself. As both a gym owner and financial coach, Billy brings a unique perspective to this conversation. You'll hear how he built two successful gyms while getting out of debt, and why he now helps other fitness professionals handle their money better. Billy shares his approach of “building the plane while flying it”—taking action before everything is perfectly planned, just like he used to tell his fitness clients to “just put the darn sneakers on and get outside.”From starting his podcast in his basement during COVID (which he insists sounds better than saying “first floor”) to now running successful coaching programs, Billy opens up about the messy but rewarding journey of growing a coaching business. He talks honestly about both the wins and the setbacks, including a recent situation where someone signed up for his mastermind and then changed their mind - and why that doesn't slow him down. Listen in to hear how Billy's own financial turnaround led him to discover what he was meant to do, and why being a “money nerd” who understands the fitness industry helps him serve his clients in a unique way.Links & Resources:Ultimate Growth GuideJoin the Facebook groupYour Fitness Money CoachThe E-Myth RevisitedFitness ProfitsTotal Body BootcampKey Takeaways:A car repossession became the credibility cornerstone: Your biggest setbacks can transform into your greatest teaching tools.Small actions create business momentum, so treat building your practice like starting a workout routine: just put on the sneakers and begin.Your previous career isn't baggage. At 22 years old, Vince Gabriele attended his first Perform Better seminar as a newly minted personal trainer. When he saw long-time industry veteran, Tom Plummer speak, he was instantly inspired and became determined to be in his shoes one day. Today, Vince is a highly successful gym owner-turned consultant. He shares his journey from struggling with money management to mastering essential business metrics like EBITDA, cost per lead, and lifetime customer value. He discusses insights on prioritizing personal success, family time, and the satisfaction of helping others grow without financial gain. Vince emphasizes the importance of understanding and catering to your target market, the significance of community-building within gyms, and the traits that distinguish successful gym owners. He also reflects on the practical advice from marketing expert Seth Godin that shaped his career decisions. On learning from his past financial mistakes, Gabriele states, "I got really into some hot water because I wasn't doing a great job with managing money and managing my finances. I got into some really hard stuff financially, and that is when I realized I needed to learn how to run a business." Key themes discussed Former lineman becomes trainer, opens New Jersey gym. Helping businesses optimize for funding or sale. Consider carefully before opening another gym. Success is personal: Define what it means for you. Impactful community-building integrated into business model. Target market determines business pricing strategy. Helping gym owners focus on key business priorities. A few key takeaways:  1. Business Metrics Beyond Cash Flow: Vince emphasizes the importance of understanding key business metrics such as EBITDA and others. He mentions the importance for gym owners to go beyond just monitoring cash flow to achieve sustainable success. 2. Defining Personal Success: Gabriele underscores the importance of defining personal success based on individual priorities rather than societal norms. For him, focusing on running a single, successful gym and teaching others aligns with his values, inspired by advice from Seth Godin. He highlights prioritizing family time and personal happiness over relentless business expansion. 3. Client-Centric Business Model: Understanding your target market is crucial. Vince shares that his premium pricing strategy—charging $500 a month for gym memberships—works well with his affluent clients like doctors and lawyers. This stems from deeply understanding their needs, fears, and desires, as emphasized in a recent talk he gave where he advocated for earning a "Ph.D in customer insights." 4. Data-Driven Decision Making: Gabriele stresses the importance of data and basic "financial literacy" for making informed decisions. He describes his gym's process of maintaining detailed client cards, which combine both tangible data (e.g., physical conditions) and intangibles (e.g., personal details) to personalize client experiences. This approach helps gym owners focus on client acquisition, retention, and cash flow. 5. Building Community Within Gyms: A strong sense of community is more than just a buzzword in the HALO sector. He highlights actionable strategies such as organizing local events to drive client retention and foster a communal atmosphere. Vince cites the success of CrossFit in creating such an environment, stressing that true community building requires both ongoing effort and authentic engagement. Midlife and the menopause transition can leave us breathless, with stress, rising anxiety, and for some an accelerated decline in lung function. The good news is help is right under your nose–your breath. Many of us think of breathing as something that just happens–so we really don't think about it at all. But as this week's guest, human performance specialist Erin Carson explains, deliberately thinking about and using our breath gives us the power to calm our nervous system, decompress our joints, and improve our lung function, performance, and health, which is especially beneficial during the menopause transition and beyond. Erin Carson, CSCS, is the head coach for ECFIT where she provides strength training programs for endurance athletes seeking to perform at their very best in triathlons, marathons, and cycling events. Erin's programs are anchored in science-based fundamentals of mobility, strength training, and breathwork. Her commitment to the most advanced training strategies offered by performance specialists around the world ensures that she's at the cutting-edge of high performance sport support. Her clients include world champions and Olympians as well as everyday athletes seeking excellence.
