If it is true that we get what we get out of life based on how we view things, rather than based on circumstances, the implications are enormous. And, of course, it definitely appears that this is true. We gotta get our minds right. After a hiatus of nearly a year, we're back! Recently, we've been pondering a lot about the importance not only of a positive mindset, but also of the fact that we choose our mindsets. It's the type of stuff you hear motivational speakers talk about all the time, but as followers of Christ we've realized how much our faith is about being intentional about your mindset. Just to give a sample, the reason why some people experience great things in life and others don't is not because some people are better than others, but rather, because some people just believe that great things can and will happen! This is really simple, yet powerful stuff right here. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons you feel down, unmotivated and even depressed is because, at some point, you stopped doing stuff that made you feel alive. Perhaps you never have done anything to make yourself feel alive. For example, we both realized that we enjoyed playing music on our stereos as teenagers after school. However, once we grew up and had kids, we unconsciously stopped...and became more boring as a result. It's time to be mindful of these kinds of things so we can WAKE UP! The following quote by Gary Goldstein was one of the catalysts for this conversation: "...fear is powerful medicine and most people are not immune to it, There's very few people who can see over that headrow and stay centered and stay present and stay committed to their vision and ... We've been on this health stuff for quite a while, so yes, we already eat a decent amount of vegetables in our diet. But we're now convinced that even what we were eating was not enough. This episode is a sort of 'part 2' to our last episode (Prep Time). Basically, we had a discussion just prior to recording the episode where we had to make practical use of our own advice by taking the time to consider and talk through a situation and planning for success. Sometimes, we blaze through life so quickly that, even though we might have a vision for our lives, we'll never see the vision because we never take the time to make sure we are moving towards the vision. How can you ever make a change in your life if you never take the time to think about and plan for that change? We've discovered that a lot of the ruts that we're either experiencing now or that we've experienced in the past are due to never - or rarely - having 'prep times'...times where we can think and reflect on where we are and where we desire to be. As long as we don't have these times of reflection where we can plan our success, we pretty much ensure that we'll stay stuck. Do you have Prep Time for your life? It's interesting how we always try to wait until "the right time" to do meaningful things in our lives. When Shawn left his job roughly a month ago, we made lots of plans - saved money, adjusted expenses, etc. - and yet, it still felt like we needed to make just a few more plans to make sure we were ready. But then, realizing how excessive planning can become a stalling tactic, we went ahead and took the step of faith we knew we were supposed to take so that we could live our lives. These are the lives that we have. The time to live is right now...every second, every moment. So, when we say we have faith, do we REALLY have faith? Like, do we really believe that, through God, all things are possible? Or are the various biblical accounts that we read just good stories to us? Also, since we're talking about belief, do we really realize how powerful belief is? What we believe shapes our lives and the world around us, whether intentional or unintentional on our part, whether for better or for worse. That said, we need to pay attention to what we believe. We've been much more intentional lately about being who God created us as individuals and a family to be. From taking recent steps of faith that we felt nervous about, to hearing recent affirming messages from people like Eric Thomas (Secrets to Success Podcast) and Seth Godin, we're determined to get away from living prescribed lives in which we do things only because "we're supposed to." I (Shawn) just recently left his high-paying, stable job. Why? Well, the answer is complicated, but in a nutshell, we decided a long time ago that we want to create a different kind of life for ourselves. We want to live the lives that we believe God has called us to, which involves taking faith steps and believing that He will guide us to what He placed in our hearts. This is pretty scary, but it is exciting as well. So often, we feel like we have to have life figured out before we actually live it. If we do something, it has to be done perfectly, and to experience failure is absolutely abhorrent. We also spend our lives doing what we believe is expected of us, rather than truly following the individual paths that our Creator has laid out for each of us. Because the truth is, we know what the status quo is, but what if you're supposed to be doing something totally different than status quo? Life is an adventure! While we personally have been thinking about the importance of self-sufficiency for some years now, and have even taken certain steps towards it (such as increasing the size of our garden and getting a chicken coop), the pandemic - and the shakiness of our man-made systems - has further solidified our belief that some level of self-sufficiency is important for all people to have. This age that we live in is rife with misinformation - conspiracy theories, half-truths, and flat out lies - on the various media platforms that we consume daily. While this has been true for a long time, it's become even more clear in the past few years, and especially during this election season. One of the most unfortunate things that we have witnessed is what appears to be a widespread lack of critical thinking in our society about information we receive via social media, news, etc. Is it fair to accept what a person or organization says as truth simply because they have a platform, or is it worth it to subject everything we hear to a basic level of scrutiny before we accept it as truth? Not only can it be addictive and extremely distracting, but it's also full of mudslinging, echo chambers, and it it seems pretty much impossible to have conversations between people who have different ideas. We have contemplated getting off of social media several times - and we did indeed get off of social media for several years, as a matter of fact. I had a thought recently that I believe that God deposited into my spirit, and that thought was this: The reason that we see so much discord, division and conflict being sown in our society during this tumultuous time is because we're not deeply rooted.
