What happens when you walk away from Harvard Med School, dive into Michelin-star restaurants, and set out to change the wine industry? You get Nomadica—a wine brand that's rewriting the rules and making fine wine fun, accessible, and cool again. In this inspiring episode, Kristin Olszewski, the founder of Nomadica, shares her incredible journey from dropping out of med school to becoming a wine mogul. Kristin saw the issues with the wine industry—too pretentious, too complicated, and definitely not in touch with younger consumers. So she created something that turned the entire industry on its head. With Nomadica, she's making high-quality wine accessible to everyone, with fun packaging, playlists, and tasting notes that actually make sense. But before we dive into Kristin's story, we want to take a moment to address something important. After filming, Kristin's home was affected by the LA wildfires. While she's safe, many in the community have lost everything. Kristin's request? If you can, support Nomadica and donate to help those in need. Every bit makes a difference. If you'd like to make a donation and learn more, click here for vetted fundraising campaigns, and here for more information on the fires.

This is Episode 61 of the Consortium Podcast, an academic audio blog of Kepler Education. In this episode, Dr. Joshua Mayo, associate professor of English at Grove City College, gives his second keynote address on Cheerful Truth—the need to let go of pretentious sophistication—at the 2024 Consortium conference in Maynard, MA on July 12-13, 2024. Kepler's Consortiums provide resources and regional connections for Christian families, teachers, and educational organizations to expand the reach of classical education and foster human flourishing for generations to come. The New England Consortium of Classical Educators (NECCE) exists to point New England to the unifying Truth found in Christ and His creation, the Good of fellowship with like-minded individuals, and the Beauty reflected in great works of literature, science, and art, through teaching, conversation, and conferences. Josh Mayo is chair and associate professor of English at Grove City College, where he teaches British literature, composition, and the “Good Books” (feel free to ask him about this favorite term). He and his wife Bethany, along with their five children—Ezra, Silas, Ainley, Zoe Claire and Finn—live in Western Pennsylvania (in a technical sense). But for most of the year, Josh's soul dwells in a little fishing village in Maine called “New Harbor.” Additional relevant notes: he feels inspired by Beowulf, confused by Flannery O'Connor, and elated by Dickens.

Good evening, and welcome to another distinguished meeting of the Deeply Fought Discussion Society. This week, Prof. Zubreckyj has brought a tantalising titbit for one's contemplation: just what, precisely, makes something pretentious? Our respectful tête-à-tête leads to unexpected destinations; our travel companion, sparkling repartee. This episode's mistakes include: The video call shitting the bed and requiring 30 minutes of tech diagnostics mid-pod. Misquoting a Radiohead lyric and then fixing it in post in humiliation. Selling out one's confetti principles for money. Egregious factual inaccuracies. Take a moment of zen, then like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, rate us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and send your questions to deepfought@gmail.com.

Synopsis Night of the Living Dead is a zombie movie about a group of strangers who are funneled into a farmhouse and forced to work together for survival. Ben, our protagonist played by Duane Jones is a strong and courageous man who takes it upon himself to lead the group as they struggle to escape the zombie hoard entrapping them in the home. Through twists and turns they learn that friendship was what they really needed all along. Review of Night of the Living Dead Night of the Living Dead is a foundational horror movie that deserves to be a classic. It has a classic zombie movie feel and did a lot to inspire zombie movies in the future. Despite my enjoyment of the film, there are still points in the movie that feel slow, and the dialogue seems to repeat itself a lot when trying to explain the situation. The makeup isn't always very convincing, at least not compared to modern zombie movies, but it's almost refreshing to see zombies that aren't completely covered in blood and gore. Duane Jones gives a fantastic performance as Ben, and it's easy to root for his strong character. Judith O'Dea's acting is a little over the top for me at times, and her character becomes pretty annoying, but hey maybe if I was in a zombie apocalypse I'd be just as scared and useless as her. Score 8/10

Hello, Everyone! It's "We Review the Reviews" Time again! In this episode, we are reviewing the reviews of fan favorite: "Treachery in Death." Because this book IS a fan favorite, imagine our shock (or maybe not) about how many horrible reviews this book has! First, someone who gave this book a One Star review because they didn't like Eve and also the book didn't have "enough adrenaline or testosterone." Also, this is the first book in the series this reviewer read because they "can't be bothered to search for the #1 to start with every series." Another reviewer who says Eve is "utterly unlikable" and a "supercilious twit." Yet another reviewer who "expected better from Nora Roberts" and now they know "to stay away from J.D Robb forever." There's a review that simply says "Vulgar," and one that tells Nora to "find a Thesauras…." and as you will notice, that reviewer spelled Thesaurus wrong. BUT... There are a few bright spots in the mix of reviews including: A reviewer who is "IN LOVE with this series!" A reviewer who said: "Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I grab Treachery ID because it never fails to lift up my spirits and put me back into fighting mode." We agree! A reviewer who states: "I really enjoyed it. I should admit that JD Robb read by Susan Ericksen is pretty much always at the front of my comfort shelf." We agree with this, too! Overall, a really entertaining mix of reviews! Enjoy!

This is a bonus episode (a bit bigger than one might expect) that adapts and, more importantly expands, an essay I wrote for my friend and editor Jamie on his American Dreaming Substack. I seriously need to thank him for letting me write something so…I dunno, controversial? Combative? Anyway, whatever, so THAT under his publication's name). This does use a very contemporary and contentious issue as its launchpad, and while some might see this as impolitic or even inappropriate, my history-addled brain only allowed me to see, hear, and read what I see, hear, and read and interpret it thusly. Pretentious way of saying, yes, I know I'm being edgy, and I know I'm being provocative, but I do implore all of my listeners to hear me out. This is not only history, but it's, in my mind, an important aspect of history both in the United States and the “West” more broadly. So yes, we're talking about the biggest problems with the mere idea of affirmative action and what I—and by extension Hannah Arendt—believes is the real issue at heart when aristocrats and monarchs (literal and figurative) grant privilege as a means to improve their own lots, while, of course, always under the guise of improving everyone's lot. Is History Impossible too cynical? It's been suggested. But there's a polemic in here that needed to be made, otherwise I'd go a little crazy without making my self-important analysis known.Love to you all who support this show:David AdamcikMichael BeachBenjaminElias BorotaJohannes BreitsameterCharles CCJCliffydeuceCRdaddygorgonPaul DeCosterNathan DiehlBob DowningRob DuvalGavin EdwardsPierre GhazarianJayson GriesmeyerNathan GroteBenjamin HamiltonPeter HauckCarey HurstJoseph HurstThomas JustesenMike KalninsBryn KaufmanBenjamin LeeMaddyMounty of MadnessJose MartinezMike MaylebenJudy McCoidKyle MohneyMonicaKostas MorosRyan MortensonBen MullenSkip PachecoDavid PageMolly PanJeff ParrentJean PetersBrian PritzlPJ RaderGleb RadutskyAleksandr RakitinChris RoweJon Andre SaetherAlison SaloJake ScaliaEmily SchmidtJulian SchmidtAndrew SeeberCameron SmithThomas SqueoBrian SteggemanPier-Luc St-PierreAthal KrishnaSundarrajanJared Cole TempleChrisTXRobert VSJonny WilkieRicky WortheyF. Some have accused Brian of being pretentious. More have accused Nate of pretension. But the most have accused SASF of being "pretentious" when they criticize Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. The guys set out to dispel the myth of pretension and to answer charges leveled against them fairly and honestly. Yes, thirteen-year-old Brian loved Aragorn hacking orcs. However, if you don't understand why PJ's LOTR would make Tolkien vomit, listen to this episode. Ep. 123 also functions as a follow-up to earlier episodes on taste and sophistication. Plus you'll get solid reasons for what the movies did well (Gandalf, Gollum, setting), what they did poorly (Aragorn, Frodo, Tony-Hawk Legolas, oliphaunts, the Dead), and what they did abysmally (Faramir, Eowyn, no cleansing of the Shire) -- and why they get graded harder for it. All around a fun episode about why Brian and Nate refuse to bury this particular hatchet. #LOTR #LordoftheRings #SASF #StoriesAreSoulFood #Aragorn #Legolas #Tolkien #JRRTolkien #TheHobbit #Gandalf #Gollum #PeterJackson #WetaWorkshops
