A lady and a gent take two similar movies and compare the heck outta them. Which ones will be victorious in the great rumbles of the ages? Retro reviews, roundtables and guest appearances included.
I am excited to talk to my childhood friend and business lady extraordinaire, Sarah Todd. She chose The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) which still freaking holds up. We talk about how hobbit doors are very impractical, how Gandalf is straight blazin' 24/7, and how we think Sauron is just a hurt little boy that needs a hug. This episode I'm joined by Natalie Shore — the guitar shredding, lovely human being and half of London, Ontario's dopest rock duo, Hot Soda. Natalie chose a little short film called Harvie Krumpet (link below to watch) that packs a punch right in the feelings. We chat about how creepy claymation is, how everyday is magical and of course, the band and their debut single "Bubblegum." In this episode I'm joined by some pals from a screenwriting class I took back in 2018 — Lance, Quinn and Shahin. Lance chose this flick, War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), and we chat about everything from the incredible CGI work by Weta, the moral dilemmas in this movie and why I don't like kid characters in films. You can find Lance's cinematography/writing and films at https://lancegoosen.blogspot.com/ and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/lance_goosen/
Joe Smith is an assistant production coordinator for such streaming shows as 'Sex Life' and 'Designated Survivor' and takes me down memory lane with his pick - UHF. We talk Weird Al's career, the brilliance of Spatula City, and what makes this film so important to Joe. Follow Reel Rumble for news and updates https://www.instagram.com/reelrumble/
Business developer at PurpleDOG Post, Keshia Saldanha, gives the rundown on the melodrama that doesn't quite hit its mark: House of Gucci (2021). We chat about the book, Ridley Scott's varied career, purposeless sex scenes, Italians and why Jared Leto should stop messing with his beautiful face. This week Jazeen and writer/filmmaker Josiah Crocker fangirl hard over his pick of flick, Riders of Justice (2020). It's a Danish film starring Mads Mikkelsen with a majestic beard, unholy anger problems and a revenge complex. He's joined by three mega-nerds to take down a gang who may or may not be responsible for his wife's death. Jo and Jazeen talk about how the film navigates fatherhood, grief, trauma, chance and the fact that Mikkelsen bashed his head into a mirror. For realsies. In this special double bill episode Jazeen is joined by reoccurring guest and master of sound Jim Kelly to chat about Ridley Scott's atmospheric horror classic with the drips and chains and the James Cameron sequel with the quips and the Newts. Both Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) have been dubbed horror/sci-fi classics and are both solid films in their own right. We chat sound, we chat director's cut vs theatrical release and of course we chat xenomorphs. History of the World Part 1 written/directed by Mel Brooks is a very silly film indeed. But with any good comedy, there's always a bit more going on under the hood. Musician, comic, teacher Josh Mover chose this childhood favourite that seems to be following him around. After seeing it a million times, he's got some thoughts. We chat musical numbers, we chat old comedy legends and we chat good-bad movies. Would Mel Brooks be a Tik-Tok comedian today? This episode is just as juicy as Imhotep. We talk about how some indecent exposure happened on the set of The Mummy. Why the guest this week, entrepreneur Josh Hollings, is afraid of earwigs and how The Mummy made that fear worse. I'm talking scarabs ya'll. How nobody appreciates a good scare anymore and why Benny is the real villain of the movie. Having just finished watching 'Squid Game' on Netflix, Jazeen wanted to share her thoughts in this short-form podcast segment. Bright aesthetics covered in blood with a commentary on society, 'Squid Game' is both unsettling and mesmerizing.
We talk to comedian/writer Steph Marie about her movie of choice - Cabin in the Woods. A horror/comedy flick that has some great quippy lines, a twist ending and like any decent horror movie, says something about something.
In this month's rumble Jazeen and Jim compare two heavyweight horror/sci-fi flicks Alien and The Thing. Buckle up nerds it's about to get bumpy. They discuss practical effects, visceral vs psychological horror, Kurt Russell's blue jeans, and tape delays.
Whew, that title is a mouthful. But what's more impressive is the dreamlike visuals and practical effects of this romantic science fiction comedy-drama film starring Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, underwear stealing Elijah Wood, pot smoking Kirsten Dunst and a Rivers Cuomo look-alike Mark Ruffalo.
Nicholas Cage is a National Treasure. I mean, is in National Treasure. Angelina Jolie is in Tomb Raider. We compare these two over the top treasure hunter movies to determine which one is the best at raiding tombs and kicking ass. We were gonna do National Treasure vs Indiana Jones but let's be real, everybody knows who would have won... National Treasure? Anybody?
Get it together TETSUO! The mind bending, brilliantly animated anime from the late 80s Akira has been confusing watchers since it's initial release. But once you've seen it 4-5 times, like us, you start to get it and then you realize the story is also absolutely next level.
Two dance-centric movies of the 1980s go toe to toe. Kevin Bacon fights oppression with the forbidden art of dance and does some pretty wild gymnastics in Footloose whereas Jennifer Grey falls in love and fights classism by learning the tango from a no good bad boy dancer in Dirty Dancing. Sultry dancing aside (is it hot in here) which one is the better movie?
Nothing says 'Happy Easter' like Sally Field and Burt Reynolds in exceptionally tight jeans. The plot doesn't have to make any sense to enjoy watching 1977s Smokey and the Bandit. We debate over who Smokey and the Bandit really are, discuss the iconic moustache and the fact that the chase was all to drink some Coors. East bound and down, up, side to side.
We up the "anty" in this rumble. The classic animation showdown. Both star casts. Both bugs. Both ridiculous stories. Both neurotic main characters. Dave Foley plays an ant. Woody Allen plays himself. Sylvester Stallone is there. A fat German caterpillar is obsessed with being a beautiful butterfly. There is a dude lady bug. All because a guy got salty and wanted to spite Disney.
Podcasts are like a box of chocolates, except with those sheets that tell you what you're gonna get...Did they not have those yet in the 1960s? We make a bunch of symbolic assumptions on the multi-academy award winning epic, Forrest Gump. A masterpiece that includes instructions on the many ways to cook shrimp, a ping pong montage and dope, period appropriate music.
Before Vin Diesel's neck muscles took over his entire body...In a world where Jesse from Breaking Bad quits the meth game and opens up a car garage comes this rumble of two instant cinematic classics. Who was more needy for speedy? Who was more fasty and furiousy?
We talk Juno, a coming of age story about a quirky high schooler (played by Ellen Page) and her journey through the most heart warming take on teenage pregnancy ever. Plus Michael Cerra before he had a duster-stache. If you like snappy one liners, orange tic-tacs and sloppy but adorable acoustic music Juno is a film for you.
We try to compare these classic films as just films but inadvertently rant about their iconic franchises in our first Reel Rumble! We know the wrath of fans could strike back but does that stop us from saying controversial things like "I'm so over Star Wars" Nope. We gush over Kirk and Spock's bromance and rave about the practical effects in Empire Strikes back, a.k.a the little stick that pokes the Walkers to make them fall down.
