We think of range maps as static representations of where plants and animals belong. It doesn't often occur to us that maps are just snapshots of a constantly changing world. In the Mojave Desert, two sister species of desert ground squirrel coexist nearly side by side. A field guide's range maps will tell you where those species live right now. But those maps also convey hints out of Deep Time, and those hints can explain not only why the squirrels live where they do, but also how the two species evolved in their own directions. Host Chris Clarke shares the story of those sister species: the Mohave and Round-tailed ground squirrels. One is doing well and is abundant. The other has been designated as a threatened species. Each of them is a library of history... if we know how to read them. #363 PRIMUS Pork Soda Album Review

“Chimpanzee, he said it…he said chimpanzee…”   PRIMUS is always a fun stop on the road to Relaxerville (especially if you've got something to inhale), and PORK SODA (the band's 3rd official studio long player) is the perfect soundtrack for just such an occasion.    Released on April 20th, 1993, almost 50 years to the day after Albert Hofmann's legendary trip on Bicycle Day, PORK SODA ups the dosage of weird that was previously experienced on Sailing the Seas of Cheese with a unique formulation that only PRIMUS is capable of delivering. If anything, PRIMUS should be called “psychedelic metal” because in a weird way, that's kind of exactly what it is.    It's jazzy, ugly, funky, and heavy, with some of the most potent, caricaturized, and cartoonesque lyrics in metal delivered in the weirdest, most absurd & surreal manner possible. For people who have never ingested entheogens and wonder what Dr. Hofmann's historic lysergic fueled bike ride might have been like, PORK SODA is an excellent reference point.    Discover the difference between low rise jeans & high-rise jeans (and find out why one variety is (allegedly) better than the other), understand that Amber Alerts are “only important if your girlfriend's name is Amber”, and “go get you some weird” before you JOIN US as we crack open a can of PORK SODA and marvel at the wonderous weirdness of PRIMUS. A years long soda habit meant buying bottles by the dozen, sometimes needing a second cart at the store.   A plain straw slowly turned an unnatural green color from daily use, unnoticed for a long stretch.   Seeing that straw clearly for the first time finally raised a question that had been available the whole time.   Long running habits rarely hide their evidence, they just sit unnoticed until someone finally looks closely.   A small, ordinary detail can sometimes prompt change more than any dramatic warning could.

The global soda industry is worth over $400 billion. The probiotic supplement market exceeds $70 billion. Both depend on you not understanding what's happening in a simple jar of ginger, sugar, and water. A ginger bug is a wild fermentation starter that's been used for over 200 years. It produces naturally carbonated, probiotic-rich soda that costs about a dollar per bottle. And the specific Lactobacillus strains it contains — L. plantarum, L. brevis, L. fermentum — have been studied in hundreds of peer-reviewed papers for gut barrier integrity, inflammatory reduction, and immune support. Nutrition Nugget! Bite-sized bonus episodes offer tips, tricks and approachable science. This week, Jenn is talking about Clear Protein Soda. Are you looking for a bubbly, refreshing way to hit your daily protein targets, or is the wellness industry just trying to pack protein into things that do not need it? When a friend asked Jenn about the latest trend of clear protein sparkling waters, she had to dive deep into the nutrition label to see if these drinks are truly “clearly” superior or just another clever marketing gimmick. On the one hand, you get 20 grams of high-quality whey isolate with zero sugar, making it an easy option for a quick snack. On the other hand, could the intense alternative sweeteners be sabotaging your taste buds and keeping you hooked on sweet flavors? Is this carbonated shortcut a brilliant addition to your health routine, or are you better off chewing your protein and sticking to plain club soda? Like what you're hearing? Fan favorite Ask Gastropod is back, and we're celebrating the season by solving a pair of trans-Atlantic mysteries! First up: if you have a purple candy in Europe, it's nearly guaranteed to be flavored with a tart little berry called blackcurrant—while the same color candy in the US is almost always grape. One intrepid Gastropod listener wanted to know: why the difference? We've got the story of how a tree so important it was on early Americans coins inspired the botanical witch hunt that made a delicious fruit illegal this side of the pond—and how to try the fabulous flavor we're missing out on! Plus, lager and ale lovers around the world would be deeply confused by the warmly spiced soda that Americans call “root beer.” So where did this non-alcoholic beverage come from, what are these mysterious roots, and why is it called beer? It's a tale of tea, teetotalers, and a ubiquitous ugly baby—and because we at Gastropod will put our stomachs on the line to get to the truth, we attempted to brew the original recipe to taste it for ourselves.
