Screenwriting legend Zak Penn talks about how he got so savvy in the business of show. We talk about how coming to LA and scouting out the city geared him up for his big move after college and his sale of “The Last Action Hero” started him on a 35 year journey of being one of Hollywood's most sought after writers. We talk about the good times with Speilberg, JJ Abrams, Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, & Dwayne Johnson and we talk about the bad times with others. Bio: Zak Penn's career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.Penn's shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director's attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn's second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Penn directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios.More recently, Penn adapted the New York Times bestselling novel READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film was released in 2018. Penn also co-wrote the script for the action comedy FREE GUY, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and was released in August of 2021.
Remember that 1998 film Antz? The one about an ant named Z?The one where the ants had nightmare-inducing human teeth? The one we probably have to blame for the existence of Jerry Seinfeld's Bee Movie?Considering the movie is all about ants, you'd think it'd get SOMETHING right about ants. But Hollywood has once again LIED TO US.Do male ants have any jobs outside the boudoir? Can ants breathe? Welcome to Episode 115 of The Filmumentaries Podcast. This time I'm talking to John Bell, a concept artist and art director whose career has spanned some of the most memorable films of the last four decades. From Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home to Jurassic Park and Back to the Future II and III,John's work has left a significant mark on cinema. In our conversation, John takes us back to the early days of his career, when he transitioned from designing cars at General Motors to creating video game concepts at Atari, before finally finding his way into the film industry. He shares the story of how a speculative portfolio sent to ILM eventually opened the door to a career that included working alongside legends like Nilo Rodis-Jamero and Ken Ralston. We talk in depth about his work on Back to the Future II, where he imagined a future Hill Valley steeped in a mix of Americana and 1980s aesthetics, and Jurassic Park, where he brought bold, colorful designs to vehicles, props, and even the park's iconic branding. John also reflects on how collaboration is at the heart of filmmaking, with directors like Steven Spielberg and production designers like Rick Carter encouraging his input while shaping the look and feel of these projects. We also cover his time working on Antz at DreamWorks, where he stepped into the role of production designer for the first time, and Rango, ILM's first animated feature.Throughout, John shares his approach to balancing creativity and problem-solving, and the importance of pulling inspiration from both his surroundings and his past experiences. It's a wide-ranging discussion that touches on everything from the challenges of designing for science fiction, fantasy, and animation to how the industry has changed over the years. I hope you enjoy it.All the links
Jen Hood, Co-Founder and Design Lead at Hoodzpah http://hoodzpahdesign.com/, provides plenty of reasons to watch and re-watch Edgar Wright's 2004 horror/comedy classic Shaun of the Dead. Not only is Simon Pegg cute, but he and Nick Frost are also such a dynamic duo that you might find yourself drawing comparisons to Abbott and Costello, or Laurel and Hardy. Appropriate since, like those comedy legends, Pegg and Frost had their own streak with Shaun of the Dead, plus Hot Fuzz and The World's End. We also get into Wright's Baby Driver versus Gosling's Drive, with some talk about hair and highlights, and the problem with two similar movies debuting around the same time, A Bug's Life and Antz, we're looking at you too. In addition to this episode, and Hoodzpah, where else can you find Jen Hood? Some snazzy fonts https://hoodzpahdesign.com/product-category/fonts/ plus freelance and business courses https://courses.hoodzpahdesign.com/courses/freelance-and-business-and-stuff too. Oh, and you may find her on one of those Viking Cruises too, sooner or later, touring one of Wright's movie locations. Would it be Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz or The World's End? Listen in to find out.
Send us a textEver wondered how a fabled ogre's swamp can be the perfect metaphor for personal space? We kick off our 98th episode by reminiscing about the cherished 2001 hit, "Shrek," tapping into its enduring appeal and surprising layers of depth. As we chat about the film's clever humor and satirical spin on fairytale tropes, we also sprinkle in some personal tidbits—like Anthony's impending trip to Tennessee and Dakota's potential solo adventure on the mic. Anime fans, get ready for a rundown on the intriguing series "Dan Da Dan" and the industry's new trend towards brisker seasons and cinematic adaptations, à la "Demon Slayer."Our journey continues with a nostalgic look back at our own ambitious Lord of the Rings series and the lessons learned from producing epic-length content. This time, we're gearing up to tackle the Rings of Power series with a more streamlined approach, ensuring each episode is a digestible chunk of lore. We then rewind to DreamWorks' early animation days, spotlighting "Antz" and the groundbreaking success of "Shrek," which captivated both kids and adults alike. From terrifying initial designs to the magic of "The Prince of Egypt," we celebrate the studio's significant contributions to the animation landscape. As we frolic through "Shrek's" forest of clever parody, we highlight how the film playfully pokes fun at Disney's fairytale realm with its cheeky use of public domain characters and iconic soundtrack choices. The film's nods to real-world themes, like urban clean-up efforts paralleling Lord Farquaad's fairy tale eviction plan, offer those hidden layers we all love. In wrapping up, we hint at future topics, including a chat about the underrated gem "Atlantis," ensuring there's always something exciting on the horizon at Project Geekology.Support the show
The list of Disney/Pixar films we haven't yet touched upon here on the Couch is getting pretty slim, but 1998's A Bug's Life simply demands discussion, mostly because child Alex's love of insects cannot be denied. Hot off the heels of Toy Story, this film actually holds up quite well; its animation is solid, its characters are honestly quite impressive (with special mention to the villain Hopper and actual convincing child Dot), and its pro-union and Marxist-leaning messages are excellent reminders that it's our right as workers to eat the rich in 2024. Hope y'all enjoy our discussion, because we all know rival film Antz will be making an appearance on the Couch very soon... Content warning: strong language.
Please rate & review The Movies on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever else you listen to the show! --- TRANSFORMERS ONE is a breath of fresh air for this (admittedly casual) Transformers fan. I lived through the decade of Michael Bay's destruction porn lens and to see a Transformers movie that's a thrilling and fun sci-fi adventure while also emotionally resonant and honest? AND establishes lore that helps me appreciate the cartoon even more so? It's a stellar feat, a glorious return for the franchise that brings to mind other seminal films from my youth - X-MEN, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT and ANTZ. High praise right there. --- Follow The Movies on Twitter: @TheMovies_Pod Credit Song: "The Touch" - Stan Bush

1998 was a wild year. The mp3 player had just come out, Britney Spears was the biggest name in the media, and two sets of very similar movies were released... Two movies about space-debris-related disasters, and two movies about ants saving their colonies. Over the next two episodes, we will be getting to the bottom of this phenomenon, and see if this is a case of multiple studios having the same idea at the same time, or if something more nefarious is going on. For part one, we're focusing on two animated movies about ants. It's Dreamworks' Antz and Pixar's A Bug's Life. Which one is better? Which one is more original? Today we're buzzing through our list of the Top 5 Insects in film and animation, a surprisingly entertaining niche in cinematic creatures. We'll also be sharing our thoughts on Movie 43, a film that, frankly, failed to impress us, and we'll discuss the charming animation, Lloyd of the Flies.Top 5 Insects in Film and Animation:Z in "Antz" (1998) - This neurotic but relatable worker ant, voiced by Woody Allen, brings a lot of humor and existential dread to this animated adventure, offering a unique peek into the life of ants.Archy in "Archie and the Raid" (1962) - Based on the play "The Revolt of the Insects," this old but gold animation features Archy, the poetic cockroach who provides a whimsical yet poignant view on the life and turmoil within the insect world.Francis in "A Bug's Life" (1998) - Voiced by Denis Leary, Francis the ladybug hilariously challenges insect stereotypes and gender roles, bringing both laughs and depth to this vibrant Pixar film. The Spider in "Charlotte's Web" (1973) - Charlotte, the wise and maternal figure of the barn, spins words into her web to save her friend, proving that spiders can be just as heroic as any other character.Mothra in the Godzilla Series - This giant moth deity from the Godzilla series combines awe and mystique, bringing a supernatural element to the kaiju universe.Main Feature: Movie 43 (2013) Moving on, let's talk about Movie 43. To be blunt, this was a miss for us. This anthology of short films tries to push the boundaries of taste and comedy, but ends up feeling more like a series of disjointed, often crass attempts at humor that rarely hit the mark. Despite a star-studded cast, the movie struggles to find a consistent tone or any genuine laughs, leaving us more bewildered than entertained.Kids Feature: Lloyd of the Flies After that disappointment, let's cleanse our cinematic palette with Lloyd of the Flies. This charming animation brings the daily adventures of Lloyd, a housefly, and his quirky insect friends. Set inside a compost bin they call home, this show combines humour with sweet life lessons, making it a delightful watch for kids and a refreshing turn from our earlier feature.Whether you're into the tiny tales of insects or curious about the pitfalls of certain comedic anthologies, today's episode offers insights and reviews across a spectrum of quality and content. Join us as we explore the best and worst of what insect-themed and anthology filmmaking have to offer.

Antz was DreamWorks' first, and very accelerated, attempt at animation. They cast famous actors for the voices. They spent loads of money. And it still managed to be overshadowed by its Pixar rival, A Bug's Life. History has not been kind to its legacy. In this episode of 8111, we talk with John Bell, a New Jersey native who developed a passion for drawing and cars in his youth. To earn money as a kid, he and his brother sold his car drawings at dragster races. This passion led John to the Art Center's Transportation Design program. After graduating, he joined GM's Advanced Concept Studio in Detroit.John's career expanded further when he moved to California to work as a conceptual artist at Atari Games. By the late 1980s, he began a twenty-year intermittent tenure at Industrial Light & Magic, where he collaborated on films like "Star Trek IV," "Innerspace," and "Back to the Future II & III," earning an Academy Award nomination and a BAFTA. In 1991, he became the Art Director for "Jurassic Park."Post-Jurassic Park, John explored new avenues at Nike as a Senior Designer, diversifying into footwear, clothing, graphics, and branding. He later returned to Northern California to create concept art for films such as "Men in Black," "Mission Impossible," and "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." His work extended into production design for Dreamworks' "ANTZ."John then ventured into video game design at Electronic Arts, contributing to titles like "Freekstyle" and "Dead Space," and freelanced on animated films including "Cars" and "The Penguins of Madagascar."He later returned to ILM, working on Oscar-winning films "Rango", "Pirates IV" and "The Revenant." John has also collaborated with multiple clients including Nike, BMW, and Samsung. His broad portfolio spans film, gaming, automotive design, product design and advertising, showcasing his remarkable artistic talent. This week we're headed to the desert in hopes the dry air will ease our sufferin'... and hell's coming with us, as we watch 1993's Tombstone, directed by George Cosmatos (or Kurt Russell, depending who you ask), and starring Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, Charlton Heston, Dana Delany, Jason Priestley, Stephen Lang, Thomas Haden Church, Michael Rooker, Billy-Bob Thornton, Paul Ben-Victor, Billy Zane, John Corbett, Terry O'Quinn, and the voice of Robert Mitchum. It may not boast the bonafides behind the camera of a more prestige picture like Wyatt Earp, which came out almost six months to the day after Tombstone's Christmas '93 release -- but history has been much kinder to it, in large part because it's a hell of a lot of fun. Consider it redemption for both Russell and Kilmer given their recent fare on the podcast. PLUS: Would you quit your job if they made you go watch Madame Web? And Hayley can finally join in the conversation around Dune: Part 2. If you'd like to watch Tombstone before listening along to our discussion, it is currently streaming on Disney+. Or you can snag it for $3 from the thrift store like Justin did. Other works discussed in this episode include Little Women, Lady Bird, Elvis, Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet, Asteroid City, Cloud Atlas, Arrested Development, October Sky, The Room, Troll 2, Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, Lebanese Burger Mafia, Where'd You Go, Bernadette?, Poor Things, Late Night with the Devil, Last Voyage of the Demeter, That Thing You Do, Roadhouse, Point Break, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Friday Night Lights, Young Guns, Deep Impact, Armageddon, Volcano, Dante's Peak, A Bug's Life, Antz, Capote, Infamous, The Prestige, The Illusionist, and Monarch, among others. We'll be back next week to wrap up the month with a much anticipated and perhaps controversial canon entry, a movie that we love quite a lot here on the show but we know is not universally beloved. Returning favourite Matt Pollock is back next week to help us induct Christopher Nolan's TENET into the pod canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
We've made a bit of a hobby of mining children's movies from the 1990s for ideology, so our Superdelegate patron tier sent us a challenge: discuss ANTZ (1998) and its vision of an anthill as an alienated '90s workspace.

And we lasted one episode before it got heated and personal. This week we bring on Sam, Gordon's amazing wife who has been trying to convince him for 8 years that Dreamwork's Antz is a better movie than Pixar's A Bug's Life. Yeah, right! We bring the argument to the pod room where hilarity of course ensues as Sam tries to argue her point to Kelly and Gordon. We discuss the sexual scandals of the various ant voices, the jarring animation of Antz, the feud between producers, and how Gordon looks like a fat caterpillar. You might want to be pulled over for this one.
In this episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, the difficult journey back to Middle Earth, and the first animated film from DreamWorks.Following the success of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, it seemed straightforward that at some point, The Hobbit would make it back to the screen. But the path there would prove far more difficult than originally thought, thanks to legal issues, financial issues, and a late change of director. With Antz, the first animated film from DreamWorks had a lot of pathfinding to get through just to get made - and then its release date was moved forward, meaning it was a race against time to get the film completed, before Pixar's A Bug's Life stole its thunder.---Find Simon on Twitter at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstoriesSupport this podcast: www.patreon.com/simonbrew.Find our print magazines at store.filmstories.co.uk Hosted on Acast. Antz Vs A Bug's Life: YKY Studio Cage Match by Yippee-Ki-Yay Mother Podcast
Spatial Simulations with AWS SimSpace Weaver In this episode, Peter sits with Rahul Thakkar to discuss the revolutionary AWS SimSpace Weaver, highlighting its unique function and applications across several industries. Rahul Thakkar is the Director and General Manager of Simulation Technologies at Amazon Web Services. Before AWS, he held multiple executive roles at Boeing, Brivo, PIXIA, and DreamWorks Animation. He is an inventor, and global technology executive with a background in cloud computing, distributed and high-performance computing, media and entertainment, film, television, defense and intelligence, aerospace, and access control. His film credits include Shrek, Antz, and Legend of Bagger Vance. In 2002, he was part of the team that won an Academy Award for Shrek as the Best Animated Feature. Again in 2016, at the 88th Annual Academy Awards, Thakkar received a Technical Achievement Award. Notes AWS SimSpace Weaver enables customers to run extremely large-scale spatial simulations without having to manage any of the underlying infrastructure. It also removes the complexity of state management of entities as they move about the simulation. Previously, carrying out such simulations would be done sequentially, in a cumbersome manner over years but now it can be done in parallel in weeks. Different organizations have tried out this functionality for several scenarios and the results have been amazing. This value was largely made possible due to the approach of working with customer feedback. Rahul's interest in the cloud came much later in his career which started initially in the R&D department of the Motion Picture industry where he created many of the complex graphics in movies. He later moved into a small start-up that was developing technologies for satellite imagery and mapping, and from here he moved to aerospace. Generally, he observed the problem that it is very expensive for companies to maintain their infrastructure when dealing with simulations. It also would drain resources and distract from the main focus of the company. Eventually, knew he had to use AWS, and now he works with them. All the other primitive tools within AWS are being consumed to build the service. There is also the ability to write to S3 so that customers can write the simulations out. This helps customers to remember how the simulation played out. Relating this new service to the metaverse, Rahul believes that when it comes to the metaverse, each organization has its vision of what it should be. However, AWS built the tools to empower these organizations to build their metaverses. Despite the possibility of having competition from Azure or GCP, the focus of AWS would remain on the customer and their needs, innovation on their behalf. Identifying new problems that the service would be very applicable for is a great challenge that AWS relies on customers for, to help AWS envision where they want to go with the service. There are definitely many companies running simulations but it is hard to predict how many would migrate to the AWS SimSpace Weaver because it is still a new product. Nonetheless, a lot of industries are interested in this new service. These include smart cities, organizations ranging from local to federal or international, logistics and supply chains, large-scale event planning, or any situation where there is a need to simulate a large problem with digital replicas of the real world.
