I listened to Bubblegum by Mark Lanegan. Released in 2004, Bubblegum is Lanegan's sixth solo album, and was released well after his primary band, Screaming Trees had disbanded. The dizzying number of collaborators on Bubblegum include PJ Harvey, Josh Homme, as well as Duff McKagan and Izzy Stradlin of Guns 'N' Roses. Eliminators (1986) Director: Peter Manoogast Cast: Andrew Prine, Denise Crosby, Patrick Reynolds, Roy DotriceRobots. Cavemen. A ninja who shows up two-thirds of the way through for absolutely no reason. A mandroid who can't stay on a boat. This is Eliminators, and it is exactly the fever dream you're hoping it is.This week, John and Sean dive headfirst into the 1986 Charles Band-produced sci-fi action romp that somehow got a PG rating despite side boob, constant explosions, and a villain who gets yeeted 100,000 years into the past by a random keyboard punch. It's stupid. It's charming. It almost works. We love it.In this episode, we discuss:"Bubblegum, Paperclips, and Tank Treads" — The plot holds together by vibes alone, and that's somehow fine. The mandroid falls off the back of a boat mid-river, John rewinds it twice, and we break down why this movie's relentless, logic-free momentum is actually its greatest asset."The Sandbox Theory of Screenwriting" — Robots, time travel, Neanderthals, a ninja who materializes from the woods two-thirds in — John's thesis is that this script was written by handing kids a box of action figures and transcribing the chaos. We make the case for why that works here when it absolutely shouldn't."The Mandroid Disguise Industrial Complex" — A fedora, a tarp-cape, and a giant red flashlight bolted to his head. Incognito. We also settle the tank tread debate: hyped in the trailer, used for five minutes, abandoned, brought back only to fall over. A true cinematic crime."PG? Are You Sure About That?" — Wet T-shirts, a bar brawl led by someone named Bayou Betty, laser violence, side boob. Apparently all fine in 1986. We dig into what the ratings board was and wasn't paying attention to, and what it says about this gloriously unhinged era of filmmaking. We Also Talked About:Mr. Inbetween (Hulu) — An FX series Sean fell hard for: 26 half-hour episodes about an Australian hitman balancing contract kills with single parenthood. Dark, funny, completely addictive. The Magician (2005) (Tubi) — The Scott Ryan mockumentary that originated the Ray Shoesmith character before Mr. Inbetween existed. Essential context.WWE Biographies: Legends (Amazon) – The Von Erichs — Three hours of documented tragedy covering the same ground as The Iron Claw but with more Kevin, more Sportatorium, and more time to sit in the sadness. Sean watched it. He reports back.Video Vixen (Bloodstream) — A shot-on-video indie slasher streaming on Bloodstream (free, but they want your email, which John resents) about a cam girl with a snuff fetish that eventually stops being a fetish and just becomes murder. The most interesting thing about it is the intentionally chaotic camera work — 1080p to vertical phone shot to Super 8 grain, switching based on which influencer is on screen. Cool concept, largely forgettable execution. John supports it on principle because indie filmmakers need somewhere to put their stuff, but he's not going to pretend it's good.King Kong (1976) (Pluto) — John revisited the Jeff Bridges-and-Jessica-Lange remake. Practical effects, a worthy successor to the original, and a soft spot for a giant ape that never fully goes away.SNL on Peacock — John went back to episode one and kept going. What he found: a legitimately fascinating variety show buried under 40 minutes of content per 90-minute slot, missing skits, and enough '90s-era comedy choices to keep a content moderation team busy for years. Some of the above links are affiliate links — if you purchase through them we get a small kickback, and it's the best way to support the show.New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. Care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan explores a French-style lager from West Kill Brewing: Fur-Bearing Trout, brewed with French ingredients. West Kill Brewing Fur-Bearing Trout STYLE: French-Style LagerINGREDIENTS: French Pilsner malt; French Strisselspalt hops; Lagered in Toasted French Oak.ABV: 5.0%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance A little chill haze out of the fridge, though boasting a gold-like yellow with a white, foamy head. Aroma Graininess meets a floral hop element. Taste Clean, with a bit of sweetness from the malt, with the floral hop profile continuing into a slate-like minerality. Mouthfeel Refreshing, mostly dry, and crisp, with foamy carbonation and light body. Overall I feel the world of pilsner is spreading out from the OGs of Czech and German, as we have seen Italian and West Coast come up as well. Because of the refreshing element, I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing some more of these on the market. Pairing-wise, I would go lighter with pairings due to the floral and other subtle elements; was feeling Loire-based aged goat cheese (Selles-sur-Cher and the like), a light and rustic sandwich or flatbread would be lovely with scallions or shallots. Care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan pops an internationally-inspired Dark Lager from Zeroday Brewing and starts dreaming about barbecue. Zeroday Brewing Company Dark Lager STYLE: Dark LagerABV: 5.3%IBU: 21AVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance Dark brown with a half-inch, foamy, tan head. Aroma Deep, dark caramel/burnt sugar with toasted bread/Maillard reaction notes plus herbal hops. Taste Caramel notes continue along with the toasted bread. Mouthfeel Fairly light on the palate with a medium body, soft carbonation, and fairly dry finish. Overall This was trending more Tmave for me, but totally approachable. Pairing-wise, those Maillard-reaction notes lead me to barbecue, leading towards pulled chicken or pork with some sweet sauce. Care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan enjoyed a Skibsøl (“ship beer”), a light, smoked ale in the collaboration from West Kill, The Fountain. West Kill Brewing The Fountain STYLE: Historical Beer (Skibsøl)INGREDIENTS: Beechwood-smoked, rye, and chocolate maltABV: 3.8%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draft (Limited)COLLABORATION: The Fountain, a novel by Casey ScieszkaStats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance Super dark brown with a fluffy, off-white head. Aroma Blend of ash and smoked meat, remeniscient of rauchbier. Taste Mixture of barbecued meat/Maillard reaction, ash, some spice, and some burning leaves on the retronasal. Mouthfeel Light on the palate, with a smooth carbonation and enveloping mouthfeel. Overall I really have developed a love of these lighter, smoked beer styles, and this (my first), will hopefully not be the last one of these “ship beers”. Pairing-wise, having this with jerky on a ship would make a lot of sense, though onshore, I would say smoked meat, hearty stews/soups, darker brats, and aged cheese. Care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan pours Fog and Folklore, a hazy IPA from GearHouse Brewing Company from Pennsylvania. GearHouse Brewing Company Fog and Folklore STYLE: IPA – New England / HazyINGREDIENTS: 2-Row Pale malt, flaked oats, flaked wheat, malted oats, malted wheat; BRU-1, Galaxy, and Mosaic hopsABV: 7.0%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance Super orange in hue and hazy, with a white, fluffy head and a little lacing on the glass. Aroma Guava hit first, followed by pineapple, peach, and some pear. Taste Guava, followed by some of the other tropical notes from the aroma. Mouthfeel Fairly dry, medium body, with soft carbonation and mouthfeel. Overall Super interesting and tropical-forward for sure. Pairing-wise, I was feeling ceviche would go great as well as fish tacos, poke, or anything to embrace those flavors. Care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan unmasks KCBC Devil You Know, an American IPA hopped with Centennial, Nelson Sauvin, and Chinook. KCBC Devil You Know STYLE: American IPAINGREDIENTS: Malted barley; Centennial, Nelson Sauvin, and Chinook hopsABV: 7.0%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance Beautifully clear, medium yellow in color, with a frothy and foamy white head. Aroma Grapefruit juice/peel hit first, with muted pineapple, and a little white grape. Taste Similar notes to the aroma, with pine and resin mixing in with pineapple juice in the mid-palate and some lemon/lime notes towards the end and finish. Mouthfeel Dry, keeping you coming back for another sip, with zippy carbonation and medium mouthfeel. Overall As of the time of the recording, Daredevil:Born Again is airing, and this is sort of a tie-in to it. Pairing-wise, you can go a lot of different ways with it, but I was feeling Thai chili wings or something with a bit of spice to hold up against the hops notes. I have come to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubble gum.
One of a few from West Kill Brewing care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan samples Gone Afield, a wheat beer with orange, chamomile, and coriander. West Kill Brewing Gone Afield STYLE: Wheat Beer/Witbier/BlancheINGREDIENTS: Coriander, orange, and chamomileABV: 5.2%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance Hazy, medium gold/yellow with a white, fluffy head. Aroma Orange hit first, followed by the floral notes from the chamomile before the coriander/spice element lands, with an impression of malt sweetness. Taste Sweet bread/honey bread meets the orange and coriander notes with a subtle floral element. Mouthfeel Refreshing, light and slightly off-dry, with soft, foamy carbonation. Overall It’s great to see wheat beers out and about. Not typically my favorite style, but when they’re well-executed, they are still pretty delightful. Pairing-wise, I would definitely go lighter on flavors, maybe goat or lightly flavored cheeses, flatbreads, or something fresh that can complement the orange, chamomile, and coriander notes. Care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan opened a Crooked Mouth Brewing Melisandre, an Irish Red Ale, which you don’t see often. Crooked Mouth Brewing Melisandre STYLE: Irish Red AleABV: 5.0%IBU: 26AVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draftStats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance Lightly-tinged copper and reddish in hue with a slightly off-white head. Aroma Sweet caramel malt meets the earthy/spicy/floral hop notes. Taste The earthy hop notes hit first, with the sweet malt and caramel element following on the mid-palate. Mouthfeel Smooth carbonation, light, refreshing, and moderately dry. Overall I don’t see Irish Reds around much, but they are flavorful and food-friendly when you might not have other distinct styles you are craving. Pairing-wise, I think general pub fare would be great from wings to Southwest Egg Rolls. While picking up some beer, Dan grabbed a single can of Shop Talk, a collaborative coffee stout with Ninth Street Espresso. Other Half Brewing Doug STYLE: Coffee StoutINGREDIENTS: Ninth Street Espresso Alphabet City Roast; Rahr 2-row, Flaked Oats, Weyermann Munich Type 1, Weyermann CaraFoam, Simpsons Brown Malt, Simpsons Crystal Dark, Weyermann Chocolate Rye, Weyermann Carafa III Special; German Herkules hopsABV: 6.0%AVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans (Limited)Stats above taken from the bottle/website. Appearance Super dark brown with a light tan head and large bubble carbonation. Aroma Medium coffee roast leads, with a blend of milk and dark chocolate and impression of creaminess. Taste Freshly roasted coffee again starts with dark chocolate and dark caramel blending together with slight roast bitterness. Mouthfeel Medium-to-full body, smooth and creamy with soft carbonation. Overall I love coffee stouts, and I will almost always drink or buy one as long as they are lactose-free. This also can introduce roasters new to you, which is also neat since they also deal in fermentation. Pairing-wise, coffee-based or creamy desserts like cheesecake, but it would be interesting to try it with roasted meat or braised roast beef. Cheers and remember: Life’s a tap…drink up ’til it’s dry. Dan snagged Other Half Brewing’s Doug, a Cascadian Dark Ale (AKA Black IPA) off the shelf for a taste of nostalgia. Other Half Brewing Doug STYLE: Black IPA / Cascadian Dark AleINGREDIENTS: Maris Otter malt; Simcoe, Centennial, Chinook, and Columbus Cryo hopsABV: 7.2%AVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/Draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the bottle/website. Appearance Super dark brown with a light tan, foamy, and large-bubbled head. Aroma Pine/resin hop notes right off the bat with a mix of coffee roast and a sweet almost molasses-like element. Taste Hop and roast bitterness lead, with some medium-to-dark roast coffee, and a hint of residual malt sweetness, and a cola note in the mid-palate. Mouthfeel Supple and soft, with the foamy carbonation adding to that with an off-dry finish. Overall I will almost always taste or buy a Black IPA, as they tend to bring a bit of the nostalgia play to my palate. This one is an excellent entry, and doesn’t finish bone dry like many of yesteryear. Pairing-wise, anything with meat or chicken would be great, with chicken mole hitting my mind first, though anything with fat or spice that the hop bitterness can cut through or that the malt could complement would work. Cheers and remember: Life’s a tap…drink up ’til it’s dry. Appearance Slightly hazy but translucent and orange/gold in color with tight, ascending bubbles. Aroma Herbal note leads with an impression of tart fruit and a hint of honey. Taste Honey hits first, with peach following and finishes off-dry. Mouthfeel Fairly light on the palate, mouthcoating and with mild carbonation. Overall This was a fun one to close out the haul with for sure. I definitely would recommend to a natural cider or wine enthusiast. Pairing-wise, I would go with some lighter flatbread preparations, mild to medium-strength cheeses, and perhaps sabayon or other related desserts Cheers and remember: Life’s a tap…drink up ’til it’s dry. The eleventh of many from the New York State Cider Festival haul, Dan tastes Autumn’s Gold 2024 from Eve’s Cidery. Eve’s Cidery Autumn’s Gold 2024 STYLE: Cider – Traditional / ApfelweinABV: 8.2%AVAILABILITY: 750ml bottles (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s bottle. Appearance Beautiful medium to dark gold with a very effervescent, white head. Aroma Earthy and herbal notes from the European varietals lead, with a pleasant acidity impression blended with floral and oaky notes. Taste Bright, with some acidity in the third quarter with fruit elements, a hint of skin contact and a granite/slate minerality. Mouthfeel Very effervescent, large bubble carbonation with a medium body/mouthfeel. Overall I think this is a great cider to introduce people who have had the major producers but want to start to dip their toes in craft cider. When cidermakers can grow their own, it really envelops the terroir of that orchard. Pairing-wise, this is great for an autumn or winter meal with poultry/fowl or lighter meats, cheese, or a berry-based dessert. Cheers and remember: Life’s a tap…drink up ’til it’s dry. Maya Jade Frank joins the podcast to share the fascinating journey of a career that began with a serendipitous audition for her sister's project and led her to the Broadway stages of Evita and Mary Poppins. She opens up about the unique experience of growing up on the road with the 25th Anniversary National Tour of Les Misérables, where she balanced three hours of daily schooling with visits to historical monuments and backstage "Docu-drama" marathons. Maya discusses the transition from being a child actor in New York to a Disney Channel star in Los Angeles, reflecting on how her supportive, non-theatre parents helped her stay grounded while she pursued a "normal" college experience at USC. The conversation dives deep into Maya's impressive ability to merge her creative passions with a sharp business mind. Beyond her current starring role as Zoe Murphy in the South Florida premiere of Dear Evan Hansen, she reveals the inner workings of her digital media company, Mangoes and Bubblegum, and her work as a global Pilates instructor. From her "morning jump around" ritual to early 2000s pop punk to her dreams of performing Shakespeare at the Globe, Maya exemplifies a modern multi-hyphenate artist who prioritizes physical health and analytical data just as much as her vocal warm-ups. Maya Jade Frank is a New York City native whose extensive credits include the Broadway revival of Evita, the final Broadway cast of Mary Poppins, and the 25th Anniversary National Tour of Les Misérables. She received a Daytime Emmy nomination for her work on Nickelodeon's History and Heritage and appeared on Disney Channel's Bizaardvark. A graduate of the University of Southern California and the Royal Academy of Music in London, her recent stage work includes Next to Normal and the UK revival of Be More Chill. She is currently appearing in Dear Evan Hansen at the Actors' Playhouse in Coral Gables. The tenth of many from the New York State Cider Festival haul, Dan resamples a single varietal from Asturias, Collaos, from Treasury Cider. Treasury Cider Collaos STYLE: Cider – Asturias Dry (single varietal)INGREDIENTS: Collaos applesABV: 7.4%AVAILABILITY: 750ml bottles (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s bottle. Appearance Medium yellow in hue and clear, with very small, tight-bubbled carbonation. Aroma A distinct acid note that hits first, with some woody/oaky notes along with some earthy and fresh herb nuances. Taste Starts off with the tartness before transitioning to an oak tannin note, with the expressive fruit coming together with the earthy elements and hint of funk. Mouthfeel Fairly dry, with the a medium body and slight carbonation. Overall I love cider from Asturias, and would have loved to enjoy this from a porrón. Pairing-wise, I want rustic dishes or tapas, with fresh spices/herbs a plenty. Cheers and remember: Life’s a tap…drink up ’til it’s dry. The ninth of many from the New York State Cider Festival haul, Dan has another Kingston Black from Eve’s Cidery’s North Orchard. Eve’s Cidery North Orchard Kingston Black STYLE: Cider – Dry (single varietal)INGREDIENTS: Kingston Black apples from their North OrchardABV: 8.0%AVAILABILITY: 750ml bottles (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s bottle. Appearance Gorgeous, medium yellow/gold and very effervescent with small-bubble carbonation. Aroma Sweet and floral notes hit first with a hint of salinity and burst of fruit, which is similar but a little different from the previous Kingston Black ciders I’ve tasted. Taste Like other Kingston Black single varietals, there is some tartness mixed with earthy and herbal notes and a bready quality underlaying the sweet fruit on the mid-palate. Mouthfeel Pretty dry but delicate, with the small-bubble carbonation and a light-to medium body and mouthfeel. Overall I really love getting to taste different single varietals made of the same apple, as it really digs into the terroir where each one was grown as well as the cidermaker’s approach. Soft cheeses, salads, flatbreads would all be great, though it’s probably also so on its own. Cheers and remember: Life’s a tap…drink up ’til it’s dry. In this week's Grow Guides, episode 78, we continue our journey through the most iconic strains of all time, focusing on the genetics that helped shape modern growing, breeding, and cannabis culture. This time we're diving into legendary names like Girl Scout Cookies, Granddaddy Purple, Jack Herer, and Amnesia Haze, along with heavy hitters such as Trainwreck, Pineapple Express, Cinderella 99, and Bubblegum. We also cover classics including Super Silver Haze, Purple Haze, Cheese, and the timeless Acapulco Gold. We talk about where these strains came from, what made them stand out, and why their influence is still seen in today's hybrids. From flavour and effects to stability and breeding impact, this episode is all about understanding why these cultivars earned their legendary status. Whether you've grown them, smoked them, or just heard the names for years, this episode gives proper context to some of the most important genetics ever created, and why their legacy still matters today.
The eighth of many from the New York State Cider Festival haul, Dan cracks another single varietal, Treasury Cider Brown Snout. Treasury Cider Brown Snout STYLE: Cider – Dry (single varietal)INGREDIENTS: Brown Snout applesABV: 8.3%AVAILABILITY: 750ml bottles (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s bottle. Appearance Effervescent with cascading, tiny bubbles, golden in color, with a fluffy, white head. Aroma Herbal notes lead followed by some earthiness, grassiness, and tart impression. Taste Earthy and herbal notes continue with some residual sweetness and tannin structure. Mouthfeel Lighter in body, super dry, with the carbonation adding a lovely “scrubbing bubbles” element. Overall If you are into rustic, English cider, this is definitely one for you. Pairing-wise, lighter cheeses a la aged goat cheeses to lighter cheddars hit me first, though some lighter meats and flatbreads would sing as well. You should open this up in the early afternoon on a weekend for sure. Cheers and remember: Life’s a tap…drink up ’til it’s dry. The seventh of many from the New York State Cider Festival haul, Dan dips into Grisamore Cider Works Kingston Black single varietal. Grisamore Cider Works Kingston Black STYLE: Cider – Traditional DryINGREDIENTS: Golden Russet, Roxbury Russet, Baldwin, and Jonagold apples ABV: 7.0%AVAILABILITY: 750ml bottles (Limited – Batch 2022)Stats above taken from the brewery’s bottle. Appearance Gold in color and brilliantly clear, with minimal carbonation. Aroma A full expression of juice and flesh from the varietal and some earthy notes. Taste Great balance of dryness and sweetness and an excellent representation of the fruit and slight tartness on the finish. Mouthfeel Moderately dry, with very little carbonation and a medium body. Overall If you are unsure of where you are on the sweet-to-dry spectrum and want to start to dip your toes into single varietal cider, this is a great one to try. Pairing-wise, this would be a great table cider for most meals as long as you’re not going to spicy or powerful in flavors, but it’s great sharing by itself as well. Send us a textHello and welcome to our show. In this episode of Just Talkin Outloud, we crack open a bottle of Mr. Bubble Bubblegum Soda and put it through our official (and very serious) taste-test process.First up: the pour. We ranked the color—because let's be honest, if a soda looks like cough syrup, we're already nervous. Then came the smell test, where childhood nostalgia battled head-on with a very real “does this smell like medicine?” moment. Finally, the big question: does it actually taste like bubblegum? We break down whether this soda delivers on its promise or if it's just carbonated disappointment. Expect honest reactions, laughs, and the kind of debate only a husband-and-wife podcast can deliver—because bubblegum soda is way more controversial than it sounds. Thanks fot listening don't forget to leave us a message or a voice mail on Speakpipe. The sixth of many from the New York State Cider Festival haul, Dan revisits Little Apple Cidery Taconic Gold Dry. Little Apple Cidery Taconic Gold Dry STYLE: Cider – DryINGREDIENTS: Golden Russet, Roxbury Russet, Baldwin, and Jonagold apples ABV: 7.9%AVAILABILITY: 750ml bottlesStats above taken from the brewery’s bottle and website. Appearance Brilliant, yellow-gold, clear, with small-bubble carbonation. Aroma Reminiscent of Golden Delicious apple flesh with a nice earthiness and hint of sweetness. Taste A touch of acidity hit the mid-palate, with a bright apple juice/flesh flavor. Mouthfeel Bone dry, with that moderate carbonation and a medium body. Overall This was another really solid one. If you have a Sauvignon Blanc drinker in your life, this would be a fun one for them to sample. You can go the dessert route with compote or cheeses on a pairing perspective, but also was feeling a buffalo mozzarella or goat cheese salad/sandwich. The fifth of many from the New York State Cider Festival haul, Dan enjoys South Hill Ciders’ Porters Russet, a blend of two unique varietals. South Hill Cider Porters Russet STYLE: Cider – Traditional Dry SparklingINGREDIENTS: 50/50 blend of Porters Perfection and Golden Russet apples ABV: 8.8%RS: 0.0%AVAILABILITY: 750ml bottlesStats above taken from the brewery’s bottle and website. Appearance Medium gold in color with tight, Champagne-like bubbles. Aroma Breadiness with a blend of apple fruit, earthy, and herbal notes. Taste Gentle acidity and nice tannic structure, with those earthy notes coupled with both apple juice and flesh. Mouthfeel Tight carbonation coupled with the dry nature lead to a medium body. Overall A truly well-crafted and elegant blended varietal cider. Their pairings on the bottle sounded pretty spot on, as cheddar was one of the first things that hit my mind other than rustic poultry preparations.
