After discussing Lara Croft to death last episode, this time we felt the Need for Speed as we start the engines on our episode covering this largely forgotten car movie. We shifted gears this week to Need for Speed (2014) which is a video game adaptation focused on illegal street racing and other related and non-related crimes. We spend a chunk of time analysing some of the strange casting choices, from lead Aaron Paul failing to ignite the screen with Imogen Poots, to the baffling inclusion of a disheveled Michael Keaton playing an anonymous radio commentator. We will, inevitably, unpack the horrifying behaviour of Rami Malek's character, Finn, and try to remember Dakota Johnson's entirely forgettable character. What to expect from this week's episode: We analyse whether Aaron Paul's career ever truly raced past Breaking Bad. Sarah details her notes on the sheer number of consequential off-screen deaths and subsequent crimes the characters commit. We praise the commitment to practical effects and compare the action movies car chases to classics like Bullitt and Vanishing Point. We examine why the police were not remotely concerned about shutting down Monarch's illegal street racing operation. We spend a necessary amount of time questioning Benny (Kid Cudi) and his physics-defying, time-traveling plane. We discuss how the film could have been improved by trimming the fat (specifically two superfluous characters). We crown our newest winner of the Jason Statham King of Turds Award. In this episode, we'll kick things off with a crisp fall update from the ranch, then I'll share a story from my days galloping racehorses—an experience that taught me a lot about how to handle speed in the saddle. Our main topic this month is adapted from one of my live presentations called The Need for Speed—all about helping riders advance their skills so they can ride safely and confidently at higher speeds. And finally, we'll wrap up with our What the Hay? Q&A segment, where I'll answer your questions about a mare's emotional recovery after her rider falls off, how to master the sitting trot, and how to handle the tough situation of an older horse showing signs of lameness. Of beter gezegd, stonden.
EA is reportedly hitting the brakes on the Need for Speed franchise, Summer Games Done Quick raised $2.4 million for Doctors Without Borders, and a Switch 2 user warned about an accidental ban after playing preowned game cards. with @aeyakovenko @alive_ethToday's episode features Solana cofounder Anatoly Yakovenko in conversation with a16z General Partner Ali Yahya, recorded live at our CSX Crypto Startup Accelerator program earlier this year.Anatoly shares the origin story of Solana — from a late-night eureka moment to thousands of investor meetings and several near-death startup experiences. He talks about what it took to get the network off the ground, how his engineering background at Qualcomm shaped its design, and why a need for speed gave Solana its edge. They also get into developer culture, engineering trade-offs, and what differentiates Solana's approach to building — including its willingness to ship, iterate, and rethink everything: including, most recently, its consensus algorithm.Timestamps:(0:00) Introduction(2:54) Early Career and Move to SF(3:57) Discovering Crypto and Solana's Beginnings(8:28) Challenges and Fundraising(12:12) Building Solana and Overcoming Obstacles(13:41) Solana's Vision and Market Strategy(17:23) Navigating Crises and Team Resilience(22:37) Solana's Unique Approach and Future Plans(24:57) Solana's Unique Approach to Software Development(26:35) Redesigning Solana: Lessons Learned(30:22) The Importance of Hackathons and Community(32:32) Technical Choices and Implications(34:16) Prioritizing User Experience Over Developer Comfort(36:40) Competitive Landscape of Layer 1 Chains(38:49) Building a Loyal Developer Community(42:36) Future of Blockchains and Solana's Vision(47:29) Long-Term View and GoalsAs a reminder, none of the content should be taken as investment, business, legal, or tax advice; please see a16z.com/disclosures for more important information, including a link to a list of our investments.

Strap in (or don't) as we speed through the cultural relic known as Need for Speed, a franchise that taught generations that street racing is only illegal if you lose. We'll then take a sharp turn into Diddy's catalog, because apparently, music moguls now come with pardons for their music. Yes, we mean you Kanye. Finally, we slam into the future where Jeff Bezos, unsatisfied with just owning the world, has decided to back a shiny new electric truck company — because nothing says “saving the planet” like billionaires playing with bigger toys.
