Send us a Question!MOVIE DISCUSSION: Kathryn joins Melvin to discuss one of the most pivotal anime-film releases to ever grace the silver-screen; Akira! This 1988 film not only pushed the genre of animation to its limits, it also introduced anime to the west as a serious new genre of entertainment! Does it still hold up? Spoilers: absolutely it does!Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 18-minutes discussing the ins-and-outs of the cyberpunk aesthetic, what makes it distinct from other sci-fi settings, and whether its our preference. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)The vibes are strong with Akira. The quality is strong with Akira. When Melvin first saw the film he liked it but wasn't impressed. This time around? He thinks its incredible.Although the characters aren't profoundly deep, they are a clever, complicated mix of different figures amidst a chaotic, epic story.Every 10 minutes something crazier than the last happens on screen.Kathryn wasn't totally wowed by Akira but she totally understands its titan-status in filmmaking.Discussing Building, Rebuilding, and Destruction.Talking about Kaneda.Discussing the line, "Time isn't clear, and there ought to be a future we can choose."Getting into that absolutely insane ending.Recommendations:The Thing From Another World (1951) (Anime)Steins;Gate (2011) (Anime) Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! Our latest Animaysterpiece event begins with Katsuhiro Otomo's legendary anime film Akira. In 1988, a mysterious explosion destroyed Tokyo and ushered in World War III. The year is now 2019, and Neo-Tokyo exists in a state of fear, corruption, and division. A member of the Capsule bike gang, Tetsuo, is kidnapped by the military after colliding with a strange, psychic child. His best friend and gang leader, Kaneda, joins an underground resistant movement in hopes of rescuing him. Meanwhile, Tetsuo starts developing psychic powers of his own. Corrupted by his new abilities, Tetsuo rampages across the city in order to free and confront the fabled esper Akira. Kaneda is determined to get through to his friend, but will a (really cool) motorcycle and a laser gun be enough to stop the coming apocalypse? This one is so serious we're not even gonna give you a comical list of things to do for today's exciting episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake! ähmm, Johannes, was erleben wir hier?

They also reflect on Otomo's brilliant animated film version which is also regarded worldwide as a classic. Akira, Vol. 1 https://www.amazon.com/Akira-Vol-1-Katsuhiro-Otomo/dp/1935429000/ Welcome to Neo-Tokyo, built on the ashes of a Tokyo annihilated by a blast of unknown origin that triggered World War III. The lives of two streetwise teenage friends, Tetsuo and Kaneda, change forever when paranormal abilities begin to waken in Tetsuo, making him a target for a shadowy agency that will stop at nothing to prevent another catastrophe like the one that leveled Tokyo. Hey everybody! We are back from our break to discuss the 1988 Anime classic that started it all, Akira. Listen as we take a deep dive into this brilliantly and painstakingly animated film full of action, violence, and a touch of body horror. Enjoy!
Our October horror series continues as Byrd, Tom, Lux and Kevin discuss Shinya Tsukamoto's cult classic Tetsuo trilogy! Tsukamoto burst onto the Japanese indie scene with the first film in 1989, cementing him as a master of surrealist outsider cinema, putting his name alongside directors like Sogo Ishii, David Lynch, and David Cronenberg, and also becoming an icon of the emerging Japanese cyberpunk scene. Tetsuo The Iron Man told the story of a Japanese salaryman slowly transforming into a mass of flesh, steel and raging libido. 1992's The Body Hammer took a less surrealistic approach to the material with a more straightforward narrative about a Japanese man who is tricked into murdering his son and his rage manifests in the form of guns and metal. 2009's The Bullet Man was an attempt to appeal to an American audience, with an English speaking cast and delving into the lore of the Tetsuo cyborg monster. Although Tsukamoto's films are NOT for the faint of heart, they've managed to be extremely influential on genre cinema the world over. In addition to the movies, we also discuss Tsukamoto's career, the definition of "cyberpunk," some of his famous fans and collaborators (including Martin Scorsese, Takashi Miike, Nine Inch Nails, and Quentin Tarantino), and how Tsukamoto's themes of destruction, sexuality, and man's merging with technology continue to be thought provoking years after his debut. Sit back and enjoy the show! Together, we can turn this world into rust!

There were Japanese horror movies made in the 1980s? Yes, it's true. Not all Japanese horror comes from the late 90s and early 2000s. Let's find out what Japanese filmmakers were doing with horror late in the decade, as we put a wrap on the Summer of the 80s! There's no Bruce Campbell anywhere in sight. And Sam Raimi did not direct this. We also did not see Ted Raimi around anywhere! Okay, so the U.S. title may be a little misleading. But hey, when you work in late night television, and you put out a request for viewers to send in tapes, you have to expect that you'll receive some interesting material. Is that a legitimate snuff film, though? Well, I guess that we as the viewers had better investigate with this team from the studio. But I'm afraid that we all might just end up falling into the Evil Dead Trap (1988)!Is this the Japanese equivalent of Eraserhead? I guess, maybe. Back in the 90s, this kind of became an endurance test, an instant cult movie making the rounds on VHS among friends, if you could find it in the local video store. An endurance test? But it's only an hour and seven minutes, you say. The runtime may not be long, but let's just say that the violence and subject matter can make this an overwhelming experience for some. Get ready for the polarizing, experimental metal fetish extravaganza, Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)!And then from there, we may as well close out the decade with the Common Craig's Top 5 Horror Movies from 1988 and 1989!
