Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we explore some of cinema's biggest box office failures and decide whether they deserve a second chance. We are celebrating five years of discussing cinematic flops! This week the guys grab their mop buckets and turn the dial to weird as they dive into UHF—the only film brave enough to give us Conan the Librarian, Gandhi II, and a guy who teaches poodles to fly (sort of). Is UHF a lost comedy gem or just a Twinkie-wiener sandwich of a movie? Tune in and find out—supplies are limited, so act now!UHF is directed by Jay Levey and stars Weird Al Yankovic, Kevin McCarthy, Fran Drescher, Michael Richards, David Bowe, and Victoria Jackson. Want to help support the show? Head over to the Not A Bomb Tee Public store and check our merchandise. Special thanks to Ted Blair for the amazing designs! We're committed to hearing your feedback and suggestions. Most people don't even know what MURS is—and that's exactly why it works so well. In this first episode of the Prep Comms MURS Mini-Series, Caleb breaks down the quiet power of the Multi-Use Radio Service: a license-free, analog-only VHF service with just five channels and a lot of practical potential. You'll learn about its roots in the old business band, what the “Color Dot” frequencies mean, why MURS is legal without a license, and how it fits into a low-key family comms plan. Privacy, power limits, antenna rules, and gear you can actually use—it's all covered here. Listen in, and discover why MURS might be the perfect base layer in your emergency communications setup. In this episode: The FCC origin of MURS and its roots in the Business Band (DOT and STAR channels) What MURS can and can't do legally (no digital, no repeaters) Antenna height limits and the truth about privacy tones How MURS works around barns, homes, driveways, and family outings Why VHF still outperforms UHF in open terrain My own family's use of MURS as part of the Cascade Protocol Mentioned in this episode: Free MURS + Business Band Frequency Guide PDF: MURS Frequency PDF Recommended MURS radios & antennas (Caleb's gear list): Caleb's Amazon Store: Search MURS Want to go deeper? On today's episode, we're diving into a cult classic that redefined what it means to be weird, hilarious, and just downright absurd. A movie showing the world that Weird Al Yankovic should be protected at all costs. This movie showed us the greatest hotdog/twinkie combination of all time and taught us that broads don't belong in braodcasting, that gun control is for wimps and commies, and that life is like a mop. Almost 2 months ago, we released a brunch episode recapping the first 2 episodes of Season 2 of HBO's The Last of Us. It was a trial of sorts, as we may dip our toes in TV series reviews in the future. Well, the problem with doing that episode was that we all obviously kept watching and badly wanted to recap the entire season with each other. HEAVY SPOILERS if you haven't see all of Season 2. We return to regularly scheduled programming this Thursday with UHF and next Monday with a Brunch about famous movie curses. ————————————————— **Support us at http://patreon.com/confusedbreakfast for bonus weekly episodes, voting on upcoming movies, giving your modern-day ratings on our movies and much more. **Mail us something The Confused Breakfast PO Box 10016 Cedar Rapids, IA 52402-9802 Special thanks to our executive producers- Josh Miller, Starling, Michael Guiliano and NicMad. Welp, it's our 150th episode, and we have a lot to say about life, the universe, tor johnson, hot sauces, UHF, toys, marvel legends, werner herzog, boys without bones, man I could go on and on or you could just listen yourself.
As part of another filmmaker who's signature style we get to study, we reviewed screenwriter Zak Penn's virtual reality themed movie trilogy: LAST ACTION HERO, READY PLAYER ONE and FREE GUY. Why is the first film gone from the butt of many jokes to the perfect Hollywood insider satire? What similiarities does it share with other meta-comedies Purple Rose of Cairo, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and even UHF? And what are some of the best one-liners? Why is the second film actually fun on its own terms despite being based on an infamously hackneyed book? What easter eggs to MINORITY REPORT does Spielberg insert? Why did most of us not see it given how bad the trailer for it was? Why is the villain in FREE GUY so similar to other evil movie CEOs from GREMLINS 2 and ROBOCOP? And how do these films deal with themes of virtual reality effecting the hero's actual humanity? Plug yourself in to some immersive worlds that defy any kind of reality and come game with us! GUESTS INCLUDE: *Jon Mark *Chris Page *Ken Bates *James Avinash Jackson & Culture Shocked Podcast duo (Mike Craig & Corey Baker)! Foundations of Amateur Radio Over the years I've talked about different ways of using our license to transmit. I've discussed things like modes such as voice AM, FM, and SSB, and digital modes like FT8, WSPR, RTTY, FreeDV, Hellschreiber, Olivia and even Morse code. Recently it occurred to me that there is something odd about how we do this as a community. Now that I've realised this it's hard to unsee. Let me see if I can get you to the same place of wonder. Why is it that we as amateurs only use one such mode at a time? Let me say that again. With all the modes we have available to us, why do we only use one mode at a time, why do we get our brain into the mindset of one activity, stop doing that in order to move to another mode? It's weird. Amateur radio is what's called "frequency agile". What I mean by that is we are not restricted to a fixed number of channels like most, if not all other radio users. We can set our transmission frequency to whatever we want, within the restrictions imposed by our license conditions, and start making noise. There's agreement on what mode you can use where, but within that comes a great deal of flexibility. We have the ability to find each other. Call CQ and if the band is open and your station is transmitting a signal, the chance is good that someone somewhere on planet Earth will respond. We change frequency at will, almost without thought, but why don't we do this with modes? The closest I've seen is local VHF and UHF contests where you get different points depending on which mode you're using, and even that seems hard fought. It's weird. We have an increasing range of Software Defined Radios, or SDR, where your voice, or incoming text, can be transformed to a different mode at the touch of a button, but we rarely if ever actually use this ability. In case you're thinking that the restriction relates to the availability of SDR in the average amateur radio shack, most amateur modes fit within a normal audio stream and that same flexibility could be applied to the vast majority of transmitters scattered around the globe, but to my knowledge, it isn't. Why is that? Better still, what can we do about it? Can we develop procedures and processes to make us more, let's call it "mode agile", giving us the ability to change mode at the same ease as we change frequency? What would a "mode and frequency agile" amateur look like? What processes would you use? Right now the best we have is to QSY, or announce that we're changing frequency, but I've never heard anyone use that to describe a change of mode. Of course it's possible that I've led a sheltered life and not been on-air enough, but if that's the case, I'd love to hear about it. So, what is stopping us from becoming even more flexible? Do we need to practice this, develop better tools, teach new amateurs, have multimode nets, invent new modes that share information across different modes simultaneously, build radios that can transmit on different frequencies, or something else? In 1989, a groundbreaking film burst onto the scene, revolutionizing the cinematic landscape in unimaginable ways. But when his uncle gifts him a struggling local TV station, George unleashes a torrent of outlandish television shows filled with social satire and zany humor.
