This week, Pop Screen is taking you to Spatula City with this episode about America's pre-eminent polka-crazed pop parodist "Weird Al" Yankovic and his 1989 film UHF. Prior to this month's parody biopic Weird - in which he's played by Daniel Radcliffe, in Radcliffe's second era-defining role after Swiss Army Man - this was Al's only major motion picture. But that still leaves decades of recordings to discuss, and that's why Al superfan Jeff Pizek is back on the podcast to help bewildered Briton Graham get to the meaning of Al. Along the way, we discuss the film's inspired casting - including a chance to appreciate the comedic skills of a couple of people who, let's say, don't get the roles they used to? For very specific reasons? - its connection to The Simpsons, its vision of small-town America, and indeed the vexed question of where UHF is actually set. Is it a small town at all? We also pose a question about Dire Straits's Money for Nothing video which we forget to answer on the podcast, so let's do it here: Steve Barron. You're welcome. If you want to keep us making podcasts with this kind of polish and professionalism, I guess, you can donate to our Patreon where you get an exclusive episode every month. The next one comes out in early December, and it's a two-parter... You'll also get Rob's reviews of great Asian movies that have been overlooked by UK distributors, and Graham's twice-weekly Doctor Who reviews. Follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for more information. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pop-screen/message

But after 3 decades and thousands of Twinkie Weiner Sandwiches, UHF has become a cult classic amongst polka and non polka fans alike. So the real challenge is now. Will 1989's absurdist comedy UHF fail with Mike and Trevor like it did 33 years ago or will is soar like so many poodles?

If you are what you eat, are you not also what you watch? Weird Al’s 1989 cult classic UHF presents a vision of your brain on Hollywood. Why is it that you can remember a jingle from a random ad that hasn’t played on TV in 30 years, but you can’t remember where the spatula is? (Hint: It’s at Spatula City!)Phil and Tom plumb the pop culture repository that is the human psyche - this week on the Progressive Pop Podcast!UHF (released internationally as The Vidiot from UHF) is a 1989 American comedy film starring "Weird Al" Yankovic, David Bowe, Fran Drescher, Victoria Jackson, Kevin McCarthy, and Michael Richards. Yankovic stars as George Newman, a shiftless dreamer who stumbles into managing a low-budget television station and, surprisingly, finds success with his eclectic programming choices, spearheaded by the antics of a janitor-turned-children's television host, Stanley Spadowski (Richards). He provokes the ire of a major network station that dislikes the competitive upstart. (via Wikipedia)***If you can, please support the show on Patreon! UHF is every bit a reflection of its co-writer "Weird Al" Yankovic. It's an eccentric and peculiar film, driven by the scattershot musings of Yankovic's mind. Like his music, none of it is meant to be taken seriously. It is an amalgamation of goofy satire—some great, some not so—that's best served for repeat viewings. But again, like his music, its appeal is limited to a certain audience. Which begs the question: Why release a film like this in the heart of the summer movie season? Surrounded by massive box office hits of 1989 like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Batman, and Ghostbusters II, it was doomed to fail. And fail it did. On a budget of $5 million, it grossed just $6.1 million. Certainly low risk, but the reward wasn't much better. The studio had banked on it being otherwise. After positive test screenings—Orion's best since Robocop—they were sure they had a hit on their hands. To be fair, UHF is unique in comparison to those other offerings. And it even pokes fun at their self-seriousness. It just lacks the massive scale of most summer fare, no doubt causing it to become lost in the shuffle. Despite its underperformance, it is an amazing showcase for Michael Richards, who would become one of the great comedic actors of the 1990s with his portrayal of Cosmo Kramer on Seinfeld. The fingerprints of what would be hallmarks of that character—in particular the physical comedy—are all over this movie. As Stanley Spadowski—the inadvertent hero of Channel 62—Richards steals the show, outpacing his co-stars with a spastic performance for the ages. Truly, for any fan of Seinfeld, it is one that must be seen. So sit back, pour yourself a Tangerine Express IPA from Stone Brewing, and get ready to drink from the fire hose. Another Sunday of wrestling is in the books and a completed garage project is now off my to-do list. It’s Short Time Shots, a look at the day’s top wrestling scores and more, I’m your host Jason Bryant, and today, we’re going to teach poodles how to fly. Just a limited schedule in Division I, but we had a dandy at sold-out PPL Center in Allentown as No. 1 Penn State rallied to beat No. 5 Lehigh 23-19. The Mountain Hawks took advantage of PSU’s lightweight situation as Darian Cruz and Scotty Parker got Lehigh out to a 12-0 lead with back-to-back falls. No, we didn’t see Corey Keener for Penn State. Luke Karam extended the lead to 15-0 after a slight 2-0 upset over Jered Cortez. After that, the Penn State buzzsaw would get fired up, but the big five was only four on Sunday as Vincenzo Joseph was also out of action at 165. Zain Retherford and Jason Nolf did Retherford-Nolf kinds of things, while Mark Hall edged Jordan Kutler and Bo Nickal got past Ryan Preisch by matching 3-2 scores. Anthony Cassar and Nick Nevills closed the door on the upset bid with two decisions. Nevills scored an escape and rode out Jordan Wood to earn a 2-0 win and lock up Penn State’s 35th straight dual win. The dual drew 9,896 fans, almost doubling Lehigh’s all-time record of just over 5,000 set against Penn State last year. Next, we discover Secrets of the Universe where today we’re going to learn how to make plutonium from common household items. In Spearfish, South Dakota, 17th-ranked South Dakota State swept the Dakota Showcase, as expected. The Jackrabbits picked up big wins over Division II Augustana -- the one in South Dakota obviously -- and Northern State as well as one over NAIA Dakota Wesleyan. This event had previously been held in Sioux Falls at the Pentagon -- yes, there’s an arena with such name, not a giant military office building. Chris Bono’s squad now 3-2 on the year. Frank Beasley may have found the marble in the oatmeal and he gets to drink from the fire hose as his George Mason Patriots picked up a 32-10 win over Sacred Heart on Sunday. The win is Beasley’s first as a head coach. As an ODU alum, you know the best thing I can say about George Mason University? At least they’re not VCU. This part of the program brought to you by Spatula City. On Long Island, Penn went 3-0 at the Hofstra Duals, beating host Hofstra 34-8, The Citadel 35-10 and edging Campbell 16-15. The math tells you it’s a 5-5 split so the bonus point that made the difference came at 197 pounds from Frank Mattiace. Hofstra beat The Citadel 43-6 and Campbell beat Hofstra 30-9. The only other major dual meet event was down in South Cackalacky was Newberry hosted the Newberry Duals. St. Cloud State, the No. 1 team in Division II, went 4-0 and picked up 17 victories by fall. NAIA Life was solid, beating Emmanuel 42-3 and first-year Queens 41-10 before falling to Division II Limestone 23-9. Host Newberry did pick up one seriously big win as Jordan Simpson beat past national champion Brett Velasquez of St. Cloud State at 125 pounds. Tournament-wise, it was T. Boone Slim Pickens except for Oklahoma State, which won eight titles at the Bob Smith Fort Hays State Open. By the way, I’ve met Bob Smith. Helluva guy. Seriously. Quality dude all around. Oh, the tournament. Boo Lewallaen beat Geo Martinez -- again -- at 149 pounds. They’re both Cowboys. Nebraska freshman Mikey Labriola topped Jacobe Smith of Oklahoma State 7-6 at 174. At the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open, the only real notable was at heavyweight and it’s only notable to most because these guys were hammers in high school. North Dakota State’s Brandon Metz pinned South Dakota State’s Kevin Vough in the finals of the Red Division. At the Colorado Mesa Open, mostly Division II guys out there, but Utah Valley’s Tate Orndorff did earn a fall in 16 seconds, the fastest of the tournament. Be sure to check out the trailer for Conan the Librarian, that’s all I’ve got for now, remember, we’ve got it all on UHF, I’m Jason Bryant.     JOIN THE TEAM And if you're a fan of the extensive and broad-based reach of the shows on the Mat Talk Podcast Network, become a TEAM MEMBER today. Last season we ended the show watching Revenge of the Ninja (http://revengeofthe.ninja/) where guest Arden chose a random page number from Videohound’s Complete Guide to Cult Flicks & Trash Pics. The idea was that we would watch a film from the page he chose. What luck! On that page was Weird Al Yankovic’s UHF Where can you watch this film? And for once we recommend it. Buy the Blu-ray 25th Anniversary edition. Stream it on - Amazon iTunes Coincidentally, there probably aren’t any UHF stations where you can watch UHF. Check your local listings! This episode we’re joined by Sally from Sallyannk.com. During the episode she talks about the upcoming One Spark competition. As of posting this show we know she placed 9th in her category! Chris appeals to Cracker Jack to sponsor the show. UHF had heavy competition in 1989. We decided that Weird Al needs one of Sally’s beanies. It’s a good price, get one for yourself! Paul’s first cassette ever? Alapalooza. The film has an amazing story when it comes to its video release. Check out the “Legacy” section of the Wikipedia entry. Supposedly the movie was loosely based on The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a Danny Kaye film based on a short story. Ben Stiler stars in the remake. You do not have permission to use a real oscar in your silly film! So here’s a bashful, gold statue. Everyone needs a Nash Metropolitan. The undisputed king of sandwiches. Weird Al builds a mountain of mashed potatoes a la Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Is that the Inspector Gadget villain again? Victoria Jackson shows up in the film. She sticks to her lines and thankfully doesn’t accuse Obama of being a communist. Crispin Glover was offered the role of the janitor, but turned it down. They also tried to get Christopher Llyod. Michael Richards from Seinfeld is crazy young and one of the best parts of the film, the janitor. Chris thinks Fran Drescher looks like a Swatch watch in her dress. It’s a Film Frown alum! Billy Barty is the camera man at the station. We saw him in Harum Scarum. One of the great surrealist comedians, Emo Philips has a hilarious bit in the film. The Spatula City commercial entertains us all. The movie says it’s time to show a Weird Al video. Beverly Hillbillies. Chris loves Weird Al’s take on Wile E. Coyote and The Road Runner. Wheel of Fish? No you don’t get a clip because we’ve already spoiled enough in these notes. Trinidad Silva is amazing in this film. His character has an “animal kingdom” TV show on the public access station Al manages. Unfortunately, he died in a car accident before shooting ended and the film is dedicated to him. “You get a drink from the fire hose!” That’s the iconic line and scene from this movie. Where does the “We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!” line come from? The book The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and its 1948 film. Weird Al parodies The Geraldo Rivera Show. In the TV station there’s a Thing With Two Heads poster. The bizarre but lovable bum in the film was played by Vance Colvig Jr.. He was one of the first Bozo the Clowns. Of course there has to be a Rambo parody. Anthony Geary from General Hospital plays Philo, named after inventor Philo Farnsworth. Weird Al’s character is named George Newman in a nod to Alfred E. Neuman the mascot of Mad magazine. Sally wants more Weird Al movies. We found these interviews he did for the Nerdist network. Where’s the commentary in streaming? If you’re interested you can find some commentary in films using VHX.tv to distribute digitally. David Cross’s new film Hits has an option to get bundled extras. Paul also mentions that iTunes has Extras available for some films as well. Sally choses another page from the cult movie book! Next season we have to watch Tower of London, Top Secret! or Touch of Evil. Stay tuned after the ending theme song - we do some bonus talk about Weird Al trivia and copyright, as well as catch up with Sally’s adventures in up-cycling / recycling / repurposing goods through hand (not mine) crafting. And a double-bonus track at the very end, Paul talks with his daughter Evie just before the show starts. Thanks for listening! And thanks for taking time to join us again, Sally!
