Two Colombians in London. Follow us for an insight into life in LDN as a Latino and/or to learn a little about our culture.
This week we discuss our views on the petition going round in the last couple of weeks to "Include Latinx/Hispanic as an ethnic group in the 2021 census", from how big of a deal it really is to have our own box, to whether we would personally like to be categorised as "Latinx" (spoiler: NOPE) or "Hispanic". We go into the history of the actual term "Latino/Latina" and also other ethnicities who don't have a specific box to themselves. For those interested in the choice of music at the end, you'll be surprised to hear that Loz has converted
Finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel, Uncle Boris has laid his road map to somewhat "normality". In this episode we discuss the months ahead, reopening of certain stores and what to expect by June 21...Where will you be on June 21, Bola 8 or K-che? Also a first for S&R, Mr I Am Legend will be giving his 1st weekly traffic update of the street of Central London. Loz may know the streets of London but his geographical knowledge of South American may have you wondering about his Latino heritage. We also revisit some stories about the motherland involving currency and how times have changed since we've last been there.
Listen... it wasn't planned like this but after Loz's big news from last week there was no better time to speak to the girls at Mama's Code! Reckon this is one he's gonna have on replay in a few months' time
Loz takes us through the STRESS that was the mazamorra challenge and then reveals some BIG NEWS
This week we run through some mind-boggling facts about corruption in the motherland. Loz may not be making mazamorra but he's certainly been digging up dirt on some politicians
This week, Loz openly takes us through the events leading up to and in the aftermath of his father passing away 9 years ago. He talks to us about how he dealt with such a massive loss, what he thinks he could have done better and how the event changed his perception of those close to him who are still with us. An obviously emotional subject but very well put by your favourite mazamorra guy! RIP Mr. Lozano ❤️

From "believing in your SAUCE" to "loving what you do", this episode is another one full of wisdom and advice for people wanting to start their own business. We spoke to Vanessa, owner of El Cofre De Mya to explain to our listeners in detail how she has grown from posting her jewellery on her Instagram stories to 50 followers, to growing a massive and loyal customer base on Instagram AND launching 2 other businesses on the side, the latest one of which is coming on the 12th of the 12th at 12 (Bonitas Cosmetics). Vanessa's eye for detail, her ability to build genuine relationships with customers and her passion for what she offers are just a few takeaways from this great chat, so be ready to listen and take notes! Stay on till the end to hear our little detour into Colombian food and, of course, the weekly Tune of The Week!
Claudia's upbringing in London was quite a common one amongst immigrant children growing up in large cities abroad. What this upbringing inspired is truly amazing and uplifting to listen to! In this episode, we find out the story behind Claudia's efforts to empower women and children from marginalised backgrounds through her organisation Raices. Through a combination of her PhD research and her passion for helping others to progress, Claudia's work really is remarkable and something we are proud to share with you. Have a listen, enjoy and get inspired!
This one has it all: genuine talk, passion, positivity within a negative situation and much more. We sat down with John (J Productions) and Erika (Inspirational Thursdays) and didn't expect anything less from them regarding a topic that hits close to home: racism within our own community. We speak about Erika's frustration as an Afro-Latina, discuss the general reaction to acts of racism within the culture and, most importantly, address the role of EDUCATION in avoiding the spread of toxic traits being passed down to our younger generations. Salsa lover Erika blesses us with an absolute BANGER to end the show with, so make sure you stay tuned till the end!
Estefania (Midwifery Chronicles) brought us a really interesting topic that we feel deserves more of a spotlight - should male contraception start to be "normalised"? Join us in this insightful episode to find out more about the pros and cons of a "male pill" and hear about Estefania's thoughts on how close we are to having such a pill launched to market. We also go through the story of how female contraceptive methods came to be seen as the norm, how they really affect women and whether males would suffer from similar side effects. If you are interested in Estefania's story as a midwifery student and keen to follow other topics that perhaps don't get talked about as much as they should, definitely give Midwifery Chronicles a follow on Instagram!

Some people (Loz) can sometimes feel like more of a tourist in their home country than when visiting other random places on holiday. This week we look back on our memories and experiences from visiting La Tierrita and the things we love the most about our beautiful country. Keep an eye out also for our Top 5 Colombian dishes, as opinion is certainly split this week not just on the dishes but how you should actually go about eating them! *CERTIFIED BANGER ALERT* This week's salsa song should make you drop some serious moves (if Uncle Boris lets you!)
We're back after a short break and no prizes for guessing what was on top of our agenda. In a week when the Latino community in London once again suffered the effects of gentrification, we offer our two cents on the demolition of Elephant & Castle shopping centre. There was also room to talk about how we're coping with the Rule of 6, the threat of a further lockdown in London, a fantastic offer from Pret and, obviously, another Niche banger for your Salsa Tune of the Week!
Growing up as a Latino comes with a range of pressures and expectations... but are any of the expectations higher than going to university? This week we look back on our own uni experience and discuss whether we think it's a worthwhile chapter in a young person's life. Drama queen Messi also makes a second appearance in S&R, confirming GC's easiest prediction ever.
Loz's 30th celebrations take us down memory lane as we reminisce on the madness that is a Colombian birthday party. We also review the delicious Dominican food served up by our friends at @bocachicaldn and quickly give our two cents on the Messi saga and the possible continuation of Eat Out to Help Out. Happy Friday guys, take a couple of shots to our #TuneOfTheWeek as we go back to Salsita de Alcoba
This week we talk about job shaming amongst Latinos in London, in particular towards cleaners and manual labourers. We also address some current affairs including the A-Level grades shambles, the Champions League knockout rounds and NBA Playoffs. But don't worry, there was still plenty of time for a Colombian word of the day, la recocha and, most importantly, for your weekly dose of Salsa with a tune befitting this rainy week in London!
It could have just been a simple game but someone had to turn it into a minibet
