I thought I might share a few random bits and bobs from my little life for you to ponder today, starting with various interviews. Here I am on the mighty James Delingpole's podcast, talking about most subjects, though squabbling about conspiracy theories. Then there is this interview with Jasmine Birtles for the Money Magpie podcast, talking mostly about gold and property. (Audio on Spotify; video on YouTube). Also this radio interview with ABC Australia, I was quite pleased with. Here it is.And, if bitcoin is your thing, here I am on the Discovering Bitcoin podcast.Right. That's all the interviews done.A Thief in our MidstTurning to matters closer to home, there is a beautiful cat, pictured below, which belongs to a Chinese lady, who lives three doors up. She visits my garden every morning (the cat not the Chinese lady) as I am getting my 15 minutes of sun, purrs seductively, gets stroked, and then wanders off on its day to do who knows what. If I leave the back door open, she will come into my house and visit me at my desk, stretch out luxuriantly and, if I pick her up, start padding my chest pleasantly. I thought we had become friends.Well, you can't trust anyone.I now discover this feline fiend has been sneaking into my son's room to steal his socks, which it then brings back to its owner three doors up. Here it is. Caught red handed.A Rare Trip to the TheatreOn Wednesday I went to see The Comedy About Spies in the West End. It's not something I would have normally gone to watch, but my friend Tom Woods had some tickets he couldn't use and so off I went with my next door neighbour. I thought it was terrific. Thank you Tom!I'm obsessed with farce. Always have been since I first watched Fawlty Towers as a little boy. (I actually did my university thesis on Fawlty Towers). It's my favourite form of theatre by a country mile. I love the precision of it, along with the heightened emotion and panic. Done well there is no better narrative form, in my opinion. Films like Midnight Run and TV series like Curb Your Enthusiasm, in my view, embrace farcical plot schemes. But if you want a farce in its purest form on film, watch What's Up Doc. Just the best. The premise of The Comedy About Spies is a little bit forced, but the jokes are fab, there are hundreds of them, one after the other, they are brilliantly executed and with incredible precision - it's wonderful to see a show this tight. By the end I even found myself moved by the characters. I LOLed many times. What can I say? It's really good. What's your favourite farce? Let me know in the comments. The South Africanisation of EverythingIn other, less positive news, on Tuesday evening I found myself walking down the Kilburn High Road for the first time in about 25 years. It was always a bit rough around the edges - up there with Elephant & Castle and Streatham High Road as one of London's most worst thoroughfares - but my God it was eye-opening as to where the UK is going / has gone.Litter everywhere, people off their faces, drugs being dealt openly on the street, beggars, a woman knocked over by a bloke cycling a Lime bike on the pavement, the bloke unapologetic, little trust between visible between people in this multi-cultural mayhem. Talk about lack of cohesion. (I drove through Harlesden the other night and that was bad too).It confirmed my theory of the South Africanisation of everything. (Actually it's my friend Alex's theory, but I have purloined it). It prompted me to dig up this piece from a couple of years back, which at one point was the most read piece on this ‘ere Substack. On re-reading it now, I'm rather proud of it. Recommended. The Secret History of GoldIn personal news, I am glad/relieved to say I submitted the final proofs for my new book on gold which comes out in August - the Secret History of Gold (I haven't actually announced it yet, which I will in due course). Writing a book is an enormous undertaking. Publicising it is an even greater one. I'm glad stage one is complete. How about this for a fact?In 1930 the price of gold was £4.25 per ounce, as it was in 1716 when Isaac Newton set the price over 200 years earlier. FOUR POUNDS 25p. Today it's £2,475 per ounce. From £4.25 to £2,475. That's how much we've been robbed by currency depreciation. How have they (successive governments) been able to get away with this?Because representative democracy does not work is why.Thank goodness for gold. Thank goodness for bitcoin. Speaking of which:As always, if you are looking to buy gold, the bullion dealer I use and recommend is the Pure Gold Company. Pricing is competitive, quality of service is high. They deliver to the UK, the US, Canada and Europe or you can store your gold with them. Find out more here. The Mid-Year ReviewWearing my satirical comedy hat, I have a big gig coming up on May 20 in East London. These nights are usually pretty memorable - and for the right reasons. If you are free, come along. You can get tickets here. It would be great to see you. Finally, in case you missed this week's commentary, here it is:Have a lovely bank holiday weekend.Fun fact: Mayday - not as in the bank holiday, but as in the distress call for a ship or a plane is actually from the French, “M'aidez” - help me. May Day is an ancient festival to celebrate the beginning of summer (or as is the case in the UK this year, the end of summer), though socialists hijacked it with International Workers' Day. So now we are all crying “M'aidez” on May Day.Tell your friends about this entertaining catch up. This is a public episode. The Possibility Club podcast: Practical Bravery - CREATIVE PARTICIPATION! In this episode of The Possibility Club podcast, we're exploring the spaces where creativity becomes a conduit for connection, and where theatres and arts venues become the heartbeats of the communities they serve. Our guest is the Head of Participation at Southwark Playhouse, orchestrating a symphony of projects that resonate with thousands yearly, from all ages and backgrounds. His work is about creating a mosaic of experiences that reflect south London's diversity, challenges, and aspirations. Through strategic development, he weaves the threads of local needs with the theatre's aims, securing funding to turn vision into reality and offering tangible opportunities for emerging talents. Let's explore the conversation where art and community come together to rewrite stories, with David Workman. --- David Workman via LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-workman-3ba02132/?originalSubdomain=uk “I constantly pinch myself at how lucky I am to be doing the job I'm doing.” “I realised all my career has been spent in the Borough of Southwark, which is totally unintentional.” Southwark via GoogleMaps https://www.google.com/maps/place/London+Borough+of+Southwark/@51.4652303,-0.1528077,12z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x48760398794427df:0x41185c626be6770!8m2!3d51.4880572!4d-0.0762838!16zL20vMG45Y3c?entry=ttu “Some of the wards are some of the poorest in London, if not the UK. But that's slap bang up against brand new developments.” “No-one has to engage with us, I've got to reach out to them.” “The minute we went out and ran a workshop in a community space, we had a lot more people come along. We went into their territory and said we want to be part of this community.” Southwark Playhouse https://southwarkplayhouse.co.uk/ Southwark Playhouse — participation pages https://southwarkplayhouse.co.uk/participate/ “I still suffer quite regularly from imposter syndrome, thinking I got here, how did I get here? But I guess I've been doing it for fifteen years now, so maybe I should get over that.” “All I've learnt, I've learnt by doing. Not necessarily through studying it per se, but doing it, getting it right, getting it wrong, learning on the job.” “Last year we opened a second venue, so we now have two venues in Elephant & Castle, and within our new venue we have a dedicated participation space, which is all of my work. Realistically I'm not going to be able to fill that space twenty-four seven with all the work I do, but I want to make that space usable. So we're partnering with charities working with refugees, adults with dementia, young people at risk of exclusion. They're already doing great work — which there's no point us trying to replicate, I'd rather support and amplify that in the community, rather than trying to muscle in.” Bristol Old Vic https://bristololdvic.org.uk/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwMqvBhCtARIsAIXsZpaWRrn75HVlHHPChA8o1USd1QqX5NVN0Ryfo7v3eAbjNnZk4HbAxkwaAhg8EALw_wcB Theatre In Education via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theatre_in_education Shakespeare's Globe schools team https://www.shakespearesglobe.com/learn/ “I don't that there's one approach for everything you do. You have to be adaptive, you have to adapt to different communities, different demographics, one size will not fit all. But also I work with a lot of artists and if I employ someone because of what they're going to bring to that project, their own approach, their own artistic practice. I'm not keen on imposing on a practical side how that might be.” Elephant & Castle via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant_and_Castle "The community is changing. There's very little point me not changing how I approach my work.” “It's a way of softly building those relationships with the community, really.” “We're not funded by the Arts Council and we never have been and we've sustained and grown that over thirty years. Our model is, in a year we'll stage between twenty-five and thirty shows and we have spaces of different sizes. By not having money from the Arts Council it gives us more flexibility but more risk. But we get the balance right, generally.” Operation Mincemeat via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Mincemeat_(musical) Operation Mincemeat https://www.operationmincemeat.com/ Little Angel Theatre https://www.littleangeltheatre.com/ “I'm a glass half full person. I approach things with a ‘let's see what happens' kind of approach.” ”There's always going to be a need, a desire, for live art. Post-pandemic it took a long time for that to come back, and I think it's still doing that. People have to weigh up the costs of coming into London. You have to take a punt on something. But there's lots going on and there are a lot of exciting voices coming through.” ------ This episode was recorded in February 2024 Interviewer: Richard Freeman for always possible Editor: CJ Thorpe-Tracey for Lo Fi Arts For more visit www.alwayspossible.co.uk
Nabil from www.privatisethemandem.com joins us to explain how gentrification is a threat to culture and identity as we know it. These past couple decades have seen the UK's cityscapes changing at an increasingly rapid rate. The ends are being replaced with glossy gated-communities, complete with futuristic living facilities, logos and colour palettes to market a glamourous “inner-city living” lifestyle experience (think Elephant & Castle, think Peckham, think Stratford, think Tottenham etc.)— all at the expense of the “mandem”. However is this a threat to the “ends”? Privatise the Mandem is a manifesto and blueprint detailing how members of our inner-city communities can acquire the freehold of their buildings through legislative tools such as "Collective Enfranchisement" and the "Right-to-Buy/Acquire". The work argues the necessity of collective ownership of the ends as well as detailing the consequences of delivering on the vision. - (01:00) Intro - (16:34) The myth of London “integration” - (22:35) How they manipulate you with marketing - (26:54) The myth of private school education - (28:54) Where the word “gentrification” comes from - (29:52) The dark side of “gentrification” - (36:53) How the government ruined poor people housing - (41:48) Why and how WE need to stop gentrification - (47:04) Why it's called “Mile End” - (57:22) Why certain groups never move out the hood Be sure to REVIEW! and FOLLOW our channel so you don't miss our weekly "The Domino Effect" Episodes.

We're back after a short break and no prizes for guessing what was on top of our agenda. In a week when the Latino community in London once again suffered the effects of gentrification, we offer our two cents on the demolition of Elephant & Castle shopping centre. Acid House 1988 | Police Raids | The DungeonsEarly Acid House initiates may remember the Rave at the Cave. A mechanics railway archway in Elephant Castle, South London. A venue which hosted a series of iconic events at the height of the Second Summer of Love 1988. Attracting up-for-it party enthusiasts from all corners of the city. Two of the original promoters DJ EllisDee & Steve Whyte (DJ Chalk E White) share their untold stories. This small underground venue is widely ignored by history. Podcast host Wayne Anthony attended most of the events staged there. Rave at the Cave was brought to dramatic closure when raided by a police squad that rolled up on a train. Accompanying the raiding party was investigative TV news program World in Action. On that very night across London in Aldgate East, Wayne Anthony and partner Andrew were holding their first Genesis'88 event.Watch on Youtube: https://youtu.be/l4PyWmFt4vAShare, Like, Subscribe, Comment & Follow;Website: http://theeightyeightpodcast.com/Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheEightyEightPodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/the88podcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/The88PodcastSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-eighty-eight-podcast-introduction-00/donations
Welcome to "Between the Cracks" (or "the ones who got away"). Even though Community Keyboards has chatted with many organ and keyboard world celebrities, many more have avoided the probing questions of your host! With the kind permission of THE ESSEX ORGAN MUSEUM (http://www.essexorganmuseum.com/links-Interest.html) we present an A to Z of those who never made it, for whatever reason, to the programme. William Arthur Davies was born at Bolton, Lancashire, on June 25 1921. At the age of seven he began taking piano lessons, and by the time he was 11 he was learning the organ with his uncle, who played at the local Methodist Chapel. William was soon to be found practicing on the local Lido and Odeon cinema organs. At the age of 18 he joined the RAF, and served in Ceylon. Davies's professional career began at the Gaumont cinema, Wolverhampton, in 1946. By late 1947 he was playing at the Gaumont, Finchley. He then moved to the West End of London. There, after a short spell at the Metropole, Victoria, he spent 18 months at the Dominion in Tottenham Court Road. In 1950 he moved towards arranging and composition, and began writing for the BBC Light Music Unit. He then embarked on his long association with the popular radio program, Friday Night is Music Night, as conductor, arranger and featured piano soloist. In 1956 Davies joined British Lion at Shepperton Studios and scored several films for them. By the 1960s he was Musical Director for Southern Television, and in 1972 he provided the music for Alistair Cooke's epic radio series Letter from America. In 1975 Davies worked with Alan Bennett on his television play Sunset Across the Bay, and three years later wrote the score for the film The Last Tasmanian. Throughout this time Davies could be heard on the BBC Theatre organ in London. He also played at various cinemas including, in 1960, the first organ broadcast in stereo, from the Trocadero at Elephant & Castle. In the 1970s Davies provided the backing for Gracie Fields. He later did a series of 15-minute programs for BBC Radio 2, At the Piano. He was still working in the 1990s, and in 1992 he wrote a completely new score for Ernst Lubitsch's German film from 1919, The Oyster Princess. Davies played the organ in his local church, first at Stoke Poges, and then at Sutton, Surrey. He was also connected with the Carmelite Priory in Kensington, where he played the organ for special Sunday services, religious holidays and at Christmas. Bill Davies married Eileen Watts in 1943. The marriage ended in 1987. In 1991 Davies married Felicity White. William Arthur Davies died 2nd March 2006. Sir Michael Caine has starred in over 100 movies and won two Academy Awards, and today he shares stories and advice from his remarkable career. He reveals why he never believed in taking advice from older movie stars, why he never wanted to be James Bond, and how the 1960’s made it cool to be a young cockney in the movies. He recalls his humble working class beginnings in the projects of London known as the Elephant Castle, shares how he learned his famous discipline while serving in the Korean War, and advises young actors to "make reliability your brand." He talks about coming out of his self-imposed retirement over 20 years ago and says he’s getting better parts now at age 85 than he did when he was a young leading man. Plus Michael Caine on why John Wayne never wore suede shoes, John Huston on a director's most important job, having the best time of his life filming Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and doing Vegas with Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. As the casual dining sector in general continues to navigate through turbulent times, it is fascinating to see the continued growth of the street food scene. There seems to be a trend in specialising in one or two dishes and being great, rather than big. But whilst the consumer is loving the informality, quality, regularly changing dishes, a keen price point and an ethical impassioned owner, they still desire a space to sit, somewhere to enjoy some drinks with friends and spend a couple of hours on a night out, or a longer lunch, rather than just a few minutes refuelling on the street. So, curating spaces, communal eating, and easy-access, energised environments for street food vendors to congregate on mass, makes a lot of sense. Add to that an artisan food market, education programme, social conscience and much more, and you start to get into the head space of this week’s guest – Andrea Rasca. Andrea says that on paper, his venture – Mercato Metropolitano or ‘MM’ – should not exist. He doesn’t advertise; he doesn’t use sponsors or banks; and he certainly doesn’t worry about footfall. That’s because the first two sites of his ‘City Markets’, in London’s Elephant & Castle and Mayfair, welcome thousands of people each week. They’re drawn to MM, not only for the deliciously nutritious food and drink, but also the live music, cookery classes and, at the time I recorded this conversation, a travelling circus! As he builds his MM movement through word of mouth, Andrea wants each of his mercatos to become a thriving community. Here, the simple act of sharing a tasty meal will help to combat social isolation and food inequality – and, at the same time, encourage talented men and women to turn their cooking skills into successful enterprises. With interest from cities like Berlin, Paris, New York and Boston, Mercato Metropolitano could well be the next business model in hospitality and food retail, challenging the traditional high street of big brands and formulaic dining. Enjoy this thought-provoking conversation, with a man who describes himself as ‘Chief Executive Dreamer’ and who also has the drive to make those dreams come true.

Order Michael Caine's wonderful new book Blowing the Bloody Doors Off: And Other Lessons in Life on Amazon, Audible or wherever books are sold, and follow him on twitter at @themichaelcaine.
