International Women's Day is right around the corner, and in this episode, women are taking the mic! Uh, a few women, anyway. Performing a pretty specific sub-category of songs. And they are all from the same one country. Regardless!! First, by request, we listen to "Merry Christmas Everybody", a cover of Slade's Christmas hit performed by Sohodolls. We pair it with another woman vocalist covering another UK Christmas #1 song, "Merry Christmas Everyone" performed by Rae Morris and Lucy Rose. The ranking music in this episode is "Punk Rock Christmas" as performed by Majorettes. Thank you to CJ for requesting "Merry Christmas Everybody" by Sohodolls!
"The people you work with are people you were just thrown together with. You don't know them. It wasn't your choice. Yet you spend more time with them than you do friends or family. But probably all you've got in common is that you walk on the same bit of carpet for eight hours a day. And so, obviously, when someone comes in who you have a connection with…Yeah. Dawn was a ray of sunshine in my life and it meant a lot. But if I'm really being honest, I never thought it would have a happy ending. I don't know what a happy ending is. Life isn't about endings, is it? It's a series of moments” This week we conclude our UK Office rewatch with a deep dive on the Christmas Special! We check in on our favourite characters, with David on the road, Gareth in the boss's chair, and Dawn and Lee in Florida. We follow their storylines all the way to the crescendo at the Christmas Party to see what happens with Tim and Dawn, and to see if David can finally get a laugh or find some luck in love. And along the way we cover all of the celebrity appearances, Secret Santas, and Austin Powers costumes that go into the episode. Then in the Conference Room we do a quick post-Christmas Ordinary Things segment to check in on Edwin's time in Portland and Alex and Sean's babies first Christmases. And then to close the show we do a quick round of BBC Office Trivia sent in by a friend of the pod in the UK! Support our show and become a member of Scott's Tots on Patreon! What's up, dudes? Duane from Tinsel Tunes is here with me to talk about the 1984 Christmas mega hit “Last Christmas” by Wham! This catchy tune still holds a spot on most terrestrials radio playlists to this day!Wham! soared onto the charts in ‘84 with several memorable pop songs when George Michael dreamed about having a Christmas hit. One day, while watching football, the melody came to him. Of course, he ran upstairs to his room to record it his idea, and by the end of the night, he had written a killer tune!Featuring melodic synths and steady drum machines, the final song competed with Band Aid's “Do They Know It's Christmas?” for the UK Christmas #1. The music video boasts cinematic scenery, and tells the story of a jilted love. Of course, it ultimately lost the battle for #1, but Wham! donated the proceeds to famine relief efforts anyway. Poppy synthesizers? Check. Ugly Christmas jumpers? Got ‘em. Ski resort meet up with your ex and her new boyfriend? The race to see who will make it to number one in the UK Christmas charts has always been a hotly contested battle. But by 2009, Simon Cowell's X Factor winners were the dominant force, with four consecutive wins under their belt. Enter Jon Morter, a social media hellraiser who was out to cause chaos in the charts. Using every social media trick in the book, Jon inspired a movement which toppled the X Factor from its number one spot and catapulted a 1992 Rage Against the Machine single right to the top. Since then, Jon has used the power of social media to achieve more chart success, campaign against the closure of BBC Radio 6 station and influence polls for a popular fast food outlet. In this episode, Jon reveals his secrets behind using social media to influence popular opinion, how his campaigns have got the attention of Foo Fighters front-man Dave Grohl, and his advice on whether brands should be taking more social media risks to achieve content success.

And so our journey reaches the end of the '80s and the conclusion of Stock Aitken Waterman's most commercially successful year. The final three singles released in 1989 were all top 10 hits, including "Listen To Your Heart" by Sonia, which saw a return to the poppy fare of her debut and caught the attention of comedy duo French & Saunders, who sent up the red-headed teenager in savage style shortly after. The single also featured fan favourite B-side "Better Than Ever", which was previously recorded by Lisa Fabien. We hear the story of Lisa's dreams of success with SAW and what happened to her version. Meanwhile, Jason Donovan capped off a massive year with brand new track "When You Come Back To Me", which was hotly tipped to take out the coveted UK Christmas number 1 spot and came with a music video featuring the entire PWL team, including stylist Sharon McPhilemy and hair stylist Lino Carbosiero, who recall the shoot. Jason and Sonia, along with a who's who of pop music, were also a part of charity ensemble Band Aid II, who remade "Do They It's Christmas?" five years after the original release. Mike Stock talks about updating such a landmark song.Subscribe for bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/sawTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @MrMattDenbyInstagram: @chartbeatsauFacebook: Chart Beats: A Journey Through PopEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com
As we're in the period between Christmas and New Year, the gap between episodes is going to be longer than normal, and the podcast proper is going to be back on January the ninth. So nobody has to wait around for another fortnight for a new episode, I thought I'd upload some old Patreon bonus episodes to fill the gap. Every year around Christmas the bonus episodes I do tend to be on Christmas songs and so this week I'm uploading three of those. These are older episodes, so don't have the same production values as more recent episodes, and are also shorter than more recent bonuses, but I hope they're still worth listening to. Hello, and welcome to this week's second Patreon bonus episode. I'm recording this on December the twenty-third, so whether you hear this before Christmas is largely down to how quickly we can get the main episode edited and uploaded. Hopefully, this is going up on Christmas Eve and you're all feeling appropriately festive. Normally for the Patreon bonuses in the last week of December I choose a particularly Christmassy record from the time period we're covering in the main podcast -- usually a perennial Christmas hit like something off the Phil Spector Christmas album or the Elvis Christmas album. However, this year we're in the mid sixties, a period when none of the big hits of US or UK Christmas music were released, because it's after the peak of US Christmas music and before the peak of UK Christmas music. There were Christmas albums by people like James Brown, but they weren't major parts of the discography. So today, we're going to have a brief run-through of the Beatles' Christmas records. These were flexi-discs -- which for those of you who are too young to remember them were records pressed on very, very, thin, cheap plastic, which used to be attached to things like kids' comics or cereal boxes as promotional gimmicks -- sent out to members of the group's fan club. In a way, these were the Beatles' very own Patreon bonuses, sent out to fans and supporters, and not essential works, but hopefully interesting and fun. They very rarely had anything like a full song, being mostly made up of sketches and recorded messages, and other than a limited-edition vinyl reissue a few years back they've never been put on general release -- though one song from the discs, "Christmas Time is Here Again", *was* released as a B-side of the CD single of "Free as A Bird" in 1995: [Excerpt: The Beatles, "Christmas Time is Here Again"] Other than that, the Christmas records remain one of those parts of the Beatles catalogue which have never seen a proper widespread release. The first record was made on October the 17th 1963, at the same recording session as "I Want to Hold Your Hand", at the instigation of Tony Barrow, the group's publicist, who also came up with a script for the group to depart from: [Excerpt, the Beatles' first Christmas record] Barrow apparently edited the recording himself, using scissors and tape, and much of that was just taking out the swearing. Incidentally, I've seen some American sources talking about the word "Crimble" being a word that the Beatles made up themselves, but it's actually a fairly standard bit of Scouse slang. The second Christmas record was recorded at the end of the sessions for Beatles For Sale and was much the same kind of thing, though this time they incorporated sound effects: [Excerpt: The Beatles' Second Christmas Record] That was never sent to American fans. Instead, they got a cardboard copy of an edited version of the first record (it's possible to make records out of cardboard, but they can only be played a handful of times). They wouldn't get another Christmas record until 1968, though British fans kept receiving them. The third record sees the group parodying other people's hits, including a brief rendition of "It's the Same Old Song" interrupted by George Harrison saying they can't sing it because of copyright, and an attempt to sing Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction" and "Auld Lang Syne" at the same time: [Excerpt: The Beatles' Third Christmas Record] The fourth record, from 1966, was recorded during the early sessions for "Strawberry Fields Forever", and titled "Pantomime: Everywhere It's Christmas". For those outside the UK and its sphere of cultural influence, pantomime is a British Xmas stage tradition which is very hard to explain if you've not experienced it, involving performances that are ostensibly of fairy stories like Cinderella or Snow White, but also usually involving drag performances -- the male lead is usually played by a young woman, while there's usually an old woman character played by a man in drag -- with audience participation, songs, and old jokes of the "I do declare, the Prince's balls get bigger every year!" type. As the title suggests, then, the 1966 Christmas record is an attempt at an actual narrative of sorts, though a surreal, incoherent one. It comes across very much like the Goon show -- though like one of the later episodes where Milligan has lost all sense of narrative coherence: [Excerpt: The Beatles, "Pantomime: Everywhere It's Christmas"] it's probably the best of the group's Christmas efforts, and certainly the most fully realised to this point. The 1967 Christmas record, "Christmas Time is Here Again", is even more ambitious. It's another narrative, which sees the group playing a fictitious group called the Ravellers, auditioning for the BBC: [Excerpt: The Beatles, "Christmas Time is Here Again"] It also features parodies of broadcasting formats, which I've seen a few people suggest were inspired by the Bonzo Dog Band's then-recent Craig Torso Show radio performances, but which seem to me more indicative just of a general shared sense of humour: [Excerpt: The Beatles, "Christmas Time is Here Again"] But that record has become most famous for having one of the closest things on any of these records to a full song, the title track "Christmas Time is Here Again": [Excerpt: The Beatles, "Christmas Time is Here Again"] As well as later being issued as the B-side of a CD single, that was also remade by Ringo as a solo record: [Excerpt: Ringo Starr, "Christmas Time is Here Again"] Although my favourite use of the song is actually as an interpolation, with slightly altered lyrics, in "Xmas Again" by Stew of the Negro Problem, one of my favourite current songwriters: [Excerpt: Stew, "Xmas Again"] "Christmas Time is Here Again" would be the last Christmas record the group would make together. For their final two Christmas releases, they recorded their parts separately and got their friend, the DJ Kenny Everett, who was known at this point for his tricks with tape editing, and who shared their sense of humour (he later went on to become a successful TV comedian) to collage them together into something listenable. The highlight of the 1968 record comes from George's contribution. George, a lover of the ukulele, got Tiny Tim to record his version of "Nowhere Man" for the record: [Excerpt: Tiny Tim, "Nowhere Man"] And for the seventh and final Christmas single, recorded after the group had split up but before the split was announced, Everett once again cobbled it together from separate recordings, this time a chat between John and Yoko, Ringo improvising a song and plugging his new film, and Paul singing an original Christmas song: [Excerpt: Paul McCartney, "Merry, Merry, Year"] George's contribution was a single sentence. In 1970, the fan club members got one final record -- an actual vinyl album, compiling all the previous Christmas records in one place. All the Beatles would in future record solo Christmas singles, some of which became perennial classics, but there would never be another Beatles Christmas record [Excerpt, the end of the third Beatles Christmas record]

George Elek is joined by Ed Quigley and Danny Archer who calls in from sunny Morocco to preview the UK Christmas racing schedule from Kempton. The guys take a look at both the 26th and 27th, as well as a look at the Welsh Grand National from Chepstow and a brief look at the action from Leopardstown in Ireland. The King George takes centre stage as ever at Kempton with Bravemansgame and L'Homme Presse at the top of the market with the former current favourite at a best price of 15/8 but as short as 13/8 in places. Hitman is another in the field who takes Ed's eye as Paul Nicholls looks to win the race for a record 13th time, lining up with Bravemansgame and Frodon also to complete his treble. After being abandoned due to frozen ground last week, the Long walk Hurdle was added to Kempton's card. Champ and Paisley Park retain favouritism with the former looking to go back-to-back having won it last year. Both Danny and Ed have their reservations and are looking elsewhere for this one. McFabulous is the favourite to land the Kauto Star Novices' Chase next up and now into 11/10 having been as big as 13/8.The Christmas Hurdle gives us another chance to see the brilliant Consitution Hill in action as he takes on Epatante once more. The question in this one is how many will line up on the day itself with ten entered at present. British Christmas desserts seem to have one thing in common - dried fruit. So what do we as Americans think of the dried fruit combo in these holiday desserts? We give some of the common UK Christmas desserts a try from Christmas pudding to minced pies and we give our honest opinion. (Spoiler alert: we may not be fans of some of the options).
Kim Malcolm, Director of Product Marketing at Zappi and advertising research legend, shares what this year's top UK Christmas ads are based on her recent research, the five key elements that make them so effective (and why it's so critical to win) as well as the influence of the recession on consumer responses. For more on her advertising research, check out this content.
Check out some of our favorite moments from Real FM Radio this past week! We're talking about the realities of the holiday season, a cheesy lawsuit, canned UK Christmas dinner, an inflatable Rudolf's untimely end, and how failure can be a valuable teacher...
It's that thanking-time holiday in the United States, and so we're expressing our gratitude for our long-time listeners - by covering a repeat requester's request! Long-time listener Liam brings us two UK Christmas #1s from the 1980s, the somewhat perplexing "Mistletoe and Wine" by Cliff Richard and the more straightforwardly fun "Merry Christmas Everyone" by Shakin' Stevens. The ranking music in this episode is "Burn the Witch" by Radiohead, for reasons. Thank you to Liam for these requests!
In 2022 Aldi bounced back into the Global Top 100 Brands, having increased its value by 20% to $21bn. Aldi had the most effective UK Christmas ad last year and in is one of six brands to be nominated for Marketing Week's UK brand of the year. Aldi is on the verge of taking over from Morrisons as the UK's fourth biggest supermarket, it's growth being far ahead of everyone else in a category that saw all but Tesco lose their share of wallet in the 12 weeks to July 10. Effective communications is one of the key pillars underpinning Aldi's growth in the UK. In this podcast Jamie Peate, McCann's UK head of Effectiveness and MWGs Global Head of Retail Strategy, talks about how McCann Manchester and Aldi have a shared effectiveness culture and ways of working that leads to the creation of entertaining and distinctive brand centric communications that solve business challenges and play a key role in propelling Aldi's growth.
Our journey reaches the end of 1987 with Stock Aitken Waterman's bid for the UK Christmas number 1 slot: a double A-side release from Rick Astley that combined his cover of "When I Fall In Love" with a brand new song, "My Arms Keep Missing You". We explain the factors that prevented the single from taking out top honours that year. Plus, it was the end of an era for Bananarama as the original line-up's final single together, "I Can't Help It", was released. Phil Harding and Karen Hewitt share their memories of Siobhan Fahey's time in the group. Sinitta released her latest pop tune, "G.T.O", but she explains why she wasn't that thrilled about the song's subject matter. Meanwhile, SAW worked with DJ Steve Walsh on "Let's Get Together Tonite" and released their own follow-up to "Roadblock" called "Packjammed (With The Party Posse)".
John Paul Joans - Got To Get Together Now (1970) John Davidge was a politically motivated and confrontational stand-up comedian In 1970, he made a record for the UK Christmas market. His manager arranged for Eric Stewart, Lol Creme, and Kevin Godley (later of 10CC) to write the song with him. It was "Man From Nazareth" with the flip side "Got To Get Together Now". Both were recorded at Strawberry Studios and released on Mickie Most's RAK label. The song was tipped as a 1970 Xmas #1 but lost its momentum because the other John Paul Jones objected, necessitating that all the records be recalled, destroyed, and reprinted! The song peaked at No. 25 in January 1971 after a belated post-Xmas Top of The Pops performance. A selection from Andrea True's Europe-only third album War Machine (1980) Open Up Baby/Hootchie Kootchie Floozies/War Machine Babatunde Olatunji - Soul Makossa (1973) Originally recorded by Manu Dibango, and borrowed for Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough." Earth and Fire - Memories (1972) Earth and Fire - 21st Century Show (1970) Earth and Fire - Circus (1975) Serge Gainsbourg - Joanna (1965) OST from the film "ComeTogether" - ComeTogether/Get Together (1971) Something Weird: Come Together is one of those great, unique, hard-to-categorize European films that would best be described as a slice of life from the "free love" hippie generation. TONY ANTHONY plays Tony, a free-wheeling American stuntman working in Italian films, who tries to pick up two swinging American tourists, Lisa (LUCIANA PALUZZI) and Ann (ROSEMARY DEXTER). His persistence pays off and he gives them a tour of Rome in his new sports car. As the trio develop a friendship, we find that Ann is still suffering stress from an abortion, and Lisa was recently involved in a messy affair with an older married man. Tony has his own mental baggage: he was the only survivor when his unit was massacred in Vietnam. All three are searching for an intimate relationship. Tony is hired to play a Mexican bandit in a spaghetti western in Spain -- fans of the genre won't want to miss these scenes -- and finds himself missing the two girls. When he returns, the three take a trip to Pompeii, get turned on by the ancient erotic paintings (not an easy thing to do) and plunge into a ménage à trois. However, Tony is pretty freaked out by this and drives off to sort things out. It doesn't take him long to return and accept the relationship for what it is. It all comes to a head with a jaw-dropping out-of-left-field ending that would never fly with today's test audiences... Mr. Anthony, "best known" [quotes mine] for his spaghetti western Stranger character (Stranger in Town), is hilarious (sometimes unintentionally) and his '60s voice-over philosophy is a hoot. He's also a real fashion casualty of the times in his floppy hippie hat and Mickey Mouse denim jacket. A standout scene shows him as a gigolo in bed with a whacked-out client, lots of poodles, and a vibrator. Gorgeous Luciana Paluzzi is best known as James Bond's love interest in Thunderball. Hardcore Beatles fanatics should be alerted that the soundtrack for Come Together was released on Apple Records. Co-director SAUL SWIMMER was also involved with Let It Be, and Ringo Starr and Tony Anthony starred together in Blindman. Justin Hayward and John Lodge - Blue Guitar (1975) With 10CC. John Lodge - Street Cafe (1980) Robert Lamm - Song for Richard and His Friends (2006?) Robert Lamm - Temporary Jones (1974) The Four Seasons - Silver Star (live) (1980) Laura Brannigan - Deep In The Dark (1983) Dave Clark 5 - Children (197?) The Osmond Brothers - Flower Music (1967) Firyuza - Native land (1979) The Searchers - Love Potion #9 (1975) A pointless reinvention. The Residents - Bach Is Dead (first version) (197?) Robert Lamm - A Lifetime We (1974)

Patrick Collister is non-exec Creative Director at Ad-Lib, and Editor of Directory Magazine. He is also one of the few people to have had serious Creative Director roles in adland (Ogilvy) as well as in digital organisations (Google). So what has changed over the course of his career? Why do people keep harking back to the good old days – and what has happened to the funny ad? Jane and Patrick talk about the importance of format, the definition of advertising ‘craft', the emergence of new platforms, and the demise of the ‘big idea'. They discuss how creative and effective advertising (and the role of CMO) may look in the future… and whether any of the big UK Christmas ads this year hit the mark.

We're headed back to Christmas Eve 1988, when sneaky French nobility and the return of the quintessential 70s family were on screens. On the radio, there were songs about being grateful for motherhood, romantic espionage, a family of outlaws, and people who were famous, but not to me. Plus there were songs from a soda commercial and a fictional Australian wedding. And the all important UK Christmas #1. Episode 37: “Do You Take This Man?”. “I’m playing against type”. Happy holidays from the podcast! We've appreciated all the Unanimous listeners as we've started our first year of podcasting. #YADVW! Thanks to Superfan Lori as she teaches us about the history of the classic Christmas Pudding (and how to make it yourself). This one is Mr. Jeff’s favorite AYBS episode! While watching on #Britbox, you’ll see the message “warning: contains racist language”. Bravo, Britbox (and we’ll crack open the racist slurs with loads of context). Our eyes are shot; how about yours? We demand a Mr. Humphries range of fashion glasses. Mrs. Slocombe was given an uno (in front of everyone) by her new Greek fiancé. The bouzouki: guitar vs. lute vs. banjo? Professor Jeff professes. The Greek custom of breaking plates and the Jewish tradition of breaking glass at weddings. What the hell is a trousseau? (Something borrowed, something blue, etc) Jeff remembers Shakespeare using mid-2000’s romantic comedy films. How much was £6/head for a wedding reception in today’s money? The sneaky edit when Mrs. Slocombe’s dress bursts open. A UK Christmas tradition: heading to the pub (and why?). Capt Peacock’s very quotable “A remarkable indeed”. A cameo by beloved UK actor Gordon Kaye from “Allo, Allo”. Unpacking the episode’s racist slurs. (Sigh…) Mr. Tebb’s salad fixings approach to joining manos and wifeos (with giggles). British people playing Americans (Uncle Wendell P. Clark). Greek dancing taken from a 1964 film. The AYBS cast were crazy talented. This episode covers a few songs, a couple of which we actually disagreed on!The two dubious stars of the episode, though, are Brian Wilson's criminally unkown rap track, and the UK Christmas number one by Mr. Blobby. UK Christmas General Election looms as property prices continue to stagnate. By Charles Kelly, Property Solutions Investor, Author of Yes, Money Can Buy You Happiness and creator of Money Tips Podcast. MP’s are debating on the date of a possible general election in December, which is most unusual due to the inclement weather. Amendments could be introduced to allow voting for 16-year olds and EU citizens with settled status in the UK for the first time. Property prices stagnating The price of the average home in the UK rose by just £800 in the last year, according to the Nationwide Building Society, indicating a further slowdown for the UK housing market. In the same period three years ago, the average property price rose by £9,100, or more than ten times the current amount, the major lender's data revealed. UK house prices have risen by less than 1%, on a year-on-year basis, for each of the last 11 months based on this lender’s data, which will differ slightly from other survey’s, such as the Halifax, and the official Land Registry completion data. The annual increase was 0.4% in October, the Nationwide said. The average home is now valued at £215,368. The family get up in the attic and bust out some old musical instruments. This inspires the hosts to dwell on their own musical prowess, UK Christmas number ones and spend way to long praising classic Australian film “Young Einstein”. What’s important when it comes to choosing friends? Nicola Cairncross and Judith Morgan discuss what causes clashes and what to look out for when people seek to befriend you in business. In The Show Nicola talks about healing her fears of the dark and becoming generally braver, finding writing groups in Brighton she can meet up with during her UK Christmas trip and how two favourite actors are getting older. Judith talks about dinner with good friends on Saturday night, another funeral on Monday, and joining a 21 Day tapping challenge. What's Fuelled Their Fire? Nicola’s enjoyed Frank Kern’s launch of Convert 2.0 and Judith’s happy it is the end of term tonight for her so that she can focus on tidying up the old and preparing for the new. Focus Of The Week A regular listener to Own It! offers this week’s focus, a discussion on the nature of friendship. What’s important when it comes to choosing friends? Why do some stick with you and some go? How painful it can be when friends are “judgy” about your life choices in regard to your kids and/or your career. Where values come into this. What causes clashes and what to look out for when people seek to befriend you in business. Words Of The Week Nicola chooses Anticipation and Judith picks Service. Project Updates Nicola’s got two new projects on the go and updates the listeners on both, one inspired by Frank Kern and one she first mentioned last week; both will advance between now and the next show. Judith remembers that she often sells Listening Vouchers at Christmas time and has remembered to put them in her Facebook Shop and mention them in this week’s newsletter which is all about Listening, Talking and Conversation. Who Or What's Impressed Nicola is impressed by the two white male chefs who went through to the finals on MasterChef the Professionals and discusses that controversial decision and contributes to the debate on lack of diversity; she thought they were the best, end of. Judith is impressed by five OAP ladies with the combined age of 428 who create a RTM (right to manage) company to direct how their 44-unit care home in Gloucestershire is run, saving money and improving services for themselves and fellow residents. It’s nearly Christmas, which means if you work in an office you’ll no doubt have noticed the steady increase in packages showing up at reception. Indeed, Adobe Analytics data revealed last month that more than half of UK Christmas shopping budgets will be spent online this year. A quarter of UK shoppers do their shopping over what’s become known as the ‘Cyber weekend’ that includes the weekend bookended by the American ‘Black Friday’ shopping holiday and its online counterpart, ‘Cyber Monday’. And why are we talking about all of this on a podcast about driverless cars and the future of mobility? Well, all those gifts need to make their way to people’s doorsteps (and under their trees) somehow… Welcome back to Journey Makers, the podcast exploring not just what the future looks like, but how we’re going to get there. Each month, we take on one of the big questions facing the future of mobility. In this episode, we’re talking about freight – and the question we’re asking is: how will driverless vehicles affect the future of freight?
Mike and Derek talk Transformers UK issues #41 and 93, as well as the short story "The Night the Transformers Saved Christmas"
We figured out somewhere along the way that our Holiday Mixtape show wasn't an annual tradition, actually. Mostly because we skipped doing it last year altogether. In retrospect, it's probably better this way: Christmas songs tend to feel like abrupt departures from the norm, with a set of rules all their own, and a certain ascribed timelessness that may ensure a somewhat Stepford Wives sameness but also, when the chips fall just right, a perpetual seasonal bonus for the performer in question. Which, let's be honest, is probably why many of the more recent holiday tracks happen. It's with these greater thoughts in mind that we present our 2017 Holiday Mixtape show, in which we unwrap a few ditties you know and a great many you won't. Consider them conversation starters while you're spiking the eggnog. Kevin's Picks ###[I Wish It Was Christmas Today][1] - *Julian Casablancas* ### Mark guessed it was the other way around, but this track's genesis was part of a recurring SNL gag, where [Horatio Sans led a peculiar band of holiday sweater wearers][2] (Fallon and the omnipresent Casio keyboard, held in place by Kattan, Tracy Morgan doing this dance in place where his wrists are made of jello). And so of course Julian Casablancas of The Strokes rolled this song out as a semi-serious bonus release when his solo record dropped, and here we are. One of the better Strokes tracks not at all on a Strokes record. Cool sneaks up on you sometimes. ###Christmas Is The Time To Say I Love You - Billy Squier ### It's Christmastime, 1981, and you work for MTV. There's some sort of an announcement, you're all shuffled into a studio onto some bleachers, wondering what the hell is going on, exactly, when in saunters Billy Squier at the top of his fame. He breaks into "Christmas Is The TIme To Say 'I Love You'" and by the time he's about halfway through, you think you know the words and start to lean into it. He does that weird dancing thing where he kind of looks like a rock marionette that needs a bathroom break, and there are VJs in a time capsule. ###Just Like Christmas - Low ### One of those situations where Low gifted their fans a holiday record, highlighted by a track ('Just Like Christmas') that doesn't remotely sound like any Christmas song you know. If melancholy came in the wrapper of sunny disposition, it would be this one, and if it showed up under your tree, there's a solid chance you'd listen to it all year round. ###Merry Christmas Lil' Mama - Chance The Rapper ### Chance (here in collaboration with R&B star Jeremih) is checking all the boxes with his holiday mixtape series, and this track spotlights his freewheeling command of the studio. From religious shout outs to a pretty direct request for some love from the ladies, this one's a surprising, confounding, thoroughly entertaining rollercoaster. Shane's Picks ###[Christmas Time Is Here][6] - *Vince Guaraldi* ### Laconic and gorgeous. Christmas songs often have a tiny INSISTENT ear worm (much like what Checkov was subjected to in Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan), but this is always a palette cleanser. It takes its time, and just when you want to punch a 6 year old in the nose because "GODAMMIT I am not gonna buy you that drone, go meet up with your mom over there at Aveda"...and all of a sudden...there it is...and always feel better for 2 minutes. Till that little f$@ker shows back up...My favorite Christmas song. ###Surfin' Santa - Lord Douglas Byron ### All I'm saying about this one was that I was surprised that his Reindeer were named Jan and Dean...(was I?) ###Christmas In Hollis - Run DMC ### Go listen to RUN-DMC's classic (and it really lives up to that standard) and then search out Chance the Rapper's video "Jingle Barack". It's a parody of that RUN-DMC classic and some people are saying it might be a tremendous, beautiful, fantastic, and the best RUN-DMC tribute you will ever witness. ###Redneck 12 Days of Christmas - Jeff Foxworthy ### Yeah. Ryan's Picks ###[I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas][11] - *Gayla Peevey* ### I have somehow managed to never hear this song until about six months ago (you know, in the spirit of mid-summer). But this is from 1953, and features a ten-year-old waxing on about her wish for a rather-unwieldy animal to show up under her tree in her suburban home. Kinda hard to un-hear, but I don't think I want to. ###Barbecue - Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas ### Okay. So not necessarily a Christmas song, but definitely from a Christmas show, Jim Henson's fantastic Emmit Otter's Jugband Christmas from 1977. Apparently, Shane has never seen this inspired network holiday classic. To be fair, I haven't either in many, many years, but dug it as a kid. And hey--I'm from Texas, and this song is about barbeque. ###Santa Baby - Gwen Stefani ### A somewhat sanitized version of what has become a yearly staple of salacious Santa-sexualizing. Ms.Stefani provides just enough of what Shane refers to as "coo-ing" to render this thing close enough to foxy (but still weird), while toning it down for a morning Today Show audience. ###Dominick the Christmas Donkey - Lou Monte ### I kinda outsourced this one from a co-worker, but if Shane's reaction is any indication of success, then I'll take it. More than one of said co-workers consider this a classic. I'll just say this--if you've been desperately looking for a truly bizarre novelty song about a donkey cavorting about the the Italian hillsides in an attempt to help Santa deliver presents, well here ya go. You are welcome, and Merry Christmas. Producer Mark's Picks ###[Merry Christmas Everybody][15] - *Slade* ### It pains me to admit that I have a soft spot for 70's British Glam Rock but… well… there it is. Slade's frontman, Noddy Holder, honestly looks like he's constantly having the time of his life. Mix that with 1973's Christmas #1, and you have a recipe for perfect holiday cheer. ###Santa's Coming For Us - Sia ### Seems just about anyone can stroll into a shopping mall, drop a few grand into a kiosk, and cut their very own Christmas album. So what a surprise to hear what could potentially be my favorite Christmas collection of modern times from an artist that I discounted as an eccentric performance personality with "Black and White Cookie" hair. Saying that this is my least favorite of all the tracks I've heard off Sia's 2017 Everyday Is Christmas release may sound like a slight, but couldn't be more of a compliment. Plus… I really love videos with a barf-load of celebrity cameos. ###Lonely This Christmas - Mud ### Slade may have captured the top slot for UK Christmas singles in 1973, but the following year it took a completely differ… aw, who am I kidding? It's another British Glam Rock band disguised as Elvis vocal impersonators complete with "Darlin'" soliloquious interlude. And if you aren't distracted by the guitar player's single wind chime earring, it's likely because you're staring at his exposed nipple. ###Don't Shoot Me Santa - The Killers ### The Killers recorded 11 (ELEVEN!) Christmas singles before calling it quits (on Christmas singles) this year. I'm not a big enough The Killers fan to have known that they ever recorded one. This particular song, and the video for it, apparently form the backstory for an ongoing struggle between lead singer Brandon Flowers and the jolly old elf himself, Santa Claus. It's an hilarious video with a solid The Killers backing and a modicum of simulated peril.
All I want for the Championship is …… ? It’s Christmas time and the BITEZ boys make some seriously unfunny attempts at NFL player Christmas puns. They also discuss the controversies around the NFL, with debatable referee decisions in multiple games and how week 15 results have impacted the playoff standings. The BITEZ fantasy playoffs are also re-capped and top 3 town covers training styles and upbringings which have made NFL players great.
