As far as I know, this is the last longform interview with Vladimir Konstatntinov before the limo accident on Friday June 13th, 1997. Many outside the Motor City are unfamiliar with or too young to remember the timeline, but the Detroit Red Wings had just ended a 42 year title drought by winning the Stanley Cup Finals vs. Philadelphia on Saturday June 7th. On Tuesday June 10th the city held a Stanley Cup parade that was attended by 1.3 million people of which I was one. The next day, Wednesday June 11th I conducted this interview with Vlady on 102-7 The Bear. I'd actually forgotten that I even did this interview after the subsequent events overshadowed the joy of winning the Cup. Upon hearing it again after 25 years I cried hearing Vlady talk about enjoying his upcoming summer with his wife and daughter with the weight of knowing all their lives would be changed a mere two days later. Imagine your favorite team wins a championship only to have some of its stars critically injured less than a week after winning the title. I remember hearing a young fan of 8 or 9 years call a local radio station to express that he'd gladly give the championship back if only his heroes could be healthy again...When I found this audio, I knew I had to share it but that I'd also have to write something that at least began to articulate how profound the experience was for me personally and to try and properly express the community-wide grief felt by the people of Detroit at the time and how everyone was affected by the limo accident. Red Wings fans camped out at the hospital. It dominated the news cycle all summer when a collective celebration would have if the accident hadn't happened.
Yet another taste of the imaging I am doing for CD92.9 FM Central Ohio's Alternative in Columbus, Ohio.
Three bands have been added to the bill for the CD92.9 Holiday Show on December 9th at Kemba Live and here's the promo I did for it.
Fun fact: I've had more addresses in Akron than any other city. This Moody Blues parody track was written from a place of love while I was part of the Big Al & Scoop show in the early 90's on 97.5 WONE in Akron. A big story at the time was the noise ordinance in the city that would allow police to cite drivers with loud car stereos. That was the impetus for this performance and bit of satirical creative writing. I recently unearthed this track from an old cassette and thought I would share it for anyone who has ever loved or lived in Akron.
Here's a spot I voiced and produced for the after show parties happening at the Big Room Bar after each night of Wonderbus in Columbus, Ohio.

In 2004 Metallica flew radio station DJ's into Chicago from all over the country. Meltdown from WRIF was there(cool guy, great radio jock), and Metallica did two shows there on the Madly In Anger With The World Tour. I interviewed James Hetfield on press row at the event about the tour, the movie 'Some Kind Of Monster', listening to Radio Disney with his daughter and more. He sounds really happy. This was broadcast on the radio in Columbus on August 28th, 2004.
Highlights of our broadcast live from Disney World on 97.5 WONE in Akron, Ohio. We visit Tomorrowland Speedway, the Delta Dream Flight, and the Mission To Mars which closed a few years after. Here's a peek behind the curtain. We were live from the MGM Studios at Disney but we were actually playacting along with sound effects that we recorded at the park to make it sound like we were actually on the rides and in the attractions. We created bits around the audio we recorded in the park.
This is what happened once when I played Guns N' Roses & sent it out to Sergei Fedorov on 102-7 The Bear in Detroit. He heard it and called me on the request line!
The late Ray Manzarek of The Doors talks about his book 'Light My Fire', the factual inaccuracies in The Doors movie and how he's not a fan of Oliver Stone's telling of the story, and a real bad gig they had playing the University of Michigan's Homecoming when Jim Morrison was drunk(and Iggy Pop was there). Ray also describes how the band got together and chose their name.
In 2014 I spoke with Joe Bonamassa about his album 'Different Shades Of Blue' on 96.9 WOUR in Utica , NY which is Joe's hometown. He discusses writing original music in Nashville, writing with Jonathan Cain of Journey, James Dewar & Robin Trower, B.B. King, & Johnny Winter who had passed away recently. I loved living in Utica and you can tell Joe loved growing up there and in nearby New Hartford.
Back in 1997 I talked to 'Ernie C' Cunnigan of Body Count about the 'Cop Killer' song controversy, racism, his guitar heroes, producing the Black Sabbath album 'Forbidden', singing on the Body Count album 'Violent Demise: The Last Days', and his time living in Detroit while going to elementary school. This interview aired on 102-7 The Bear on 'The Loud Guitar Show' 3.29.97.
Peter Steele did some of the best radio interviews ever. Some of his best were with Steve Black, now of WRIF. But on this occasion, I got the honor. It was a good day… Type O Negative played Harpos in Detroit that night and it must've been 100 degrees in there. At one point we watched the show from behind thru the back curtain. Sold out, overheated, alcohol-fueled insanity for 1800…a killer show. After the show Peter made a point talking to EVERY fan who hung around hoping to meet the band…He was gracious with everyone. The Playgirl magazine with Peter Steele had just hit the stands. Lots of girls were there to get it autographed… One of the best times I've ever had at a show, and one of the nicest guys I've ever met.
During Grammy Week in 1996 I interviewed Ian Astbury at the Petersen Automotive Museum in LA for Detroit ZRock. The Cult had broken up in 1995 and Ian had started a new band called The Holy Barbarians. In May of '96 they released their only album 'Cream'. Ian talks about the sounds they were trying to create and cites The Beatles and Garbage as influences. Although work started on a second album, Ian went solo instead with The Cult eventually getting back together in 1999.
Hear the late Rodney Dangerfield cut a radio ID for me. Love Rodney! This was recorded in LA in 1996 where Detroit ZRock was doing Grammy coverage courtesy of MJI from the Petersen Automotive Museum. Also heard here is Detroit ZRock PD Joe Bevilacqua.
