The Quinn Hughes saga is over, and once again he is not joining the Detroit Red Wings. On a happier note, we open by recapping Detroit's last two games of their road trip, including a tough loss to an unreal Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers (including Simon Edvinsson scoring after suiting up unexpectedly) (5:20), before jumping into the Red Wings and their dominant win over the Connor Bedard-less Chicago Blackhawks, including Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat putting on a show, Emmitt Finnie benefitting from Axel Sandin-Pellikka's offensive moves, another John Gibson shutout, and lots more (8:45). After that, a discussion on DeBrincat's star season as he's been on fire alongside "Showtime" Patrick Kane and Andrew Copp, providing strong scoring support behind Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond on the 1st line, as well as John Gibson's recent strong streak over the past 5 games, what it could mean for the Detroit Red Wings and their playoff chances, the upcoming month of December, & plenty more (15:50). Next, Quinn Hughes being traded to the Minnesota wild for Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, a 2026 1st round pick, and Zeev Buium: our analysis on the deal, the risk Bill Guerin is taking, how Jim Rutherford did compared to expectations, Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings missing out on adding Quinn Hughes to Moritz Seider's side, what the equivalent deal may have been, and whether it would've been worth giving up Simon Edvinsson, Nate Danielson or Marco Kasper, Carter Bear, and maybe more in the trade (28:15). Finally, our thoughts on the Skinner for Jarry trade in Edmonton, and how this affects McDavid & Draisaitl's Cup chances (57:25). Let's do this! The Cult of Hockey podcast. By the Faithful and for the Faithful. Today Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal digs into the Edmonton Oilers 4-1 win over the Red Wings of Buffalo Game Overview: The Oilers celebrated a satisfying victory, with the team showcasing a solid performance against the Detroit Red Wings. David and Kurt noted that the game felt secure once the Oilers netted their third goal, with the team effectively shutting down any potential threats from their opponents. The hosts emphasized the importance of managing fatigue, especially during back-to-back games, which can significantly affect player performance. Zach Hyman's Comeback: One of the standout performances in the game came from Zach Hyman, who scored a hat trick. Kurt pointed out that Hyman's recent struggles stemmed from a wrist injury sustained during the playoffs last year, which raised concerns about his ability to return to form. However, his performance in this game suggested that he might be regaining his previous prowess. David recalled a moment from a prior game where Hyman demonstrated improved wrist strength, hinting that he could be back to his old self. Hyman's contributions are crucial for the Oilers, especially as the team looks to enhance its scoring depth. The Importance of Team Dynamics: David and Kurt highlighted the synergy between Hyman, Connor McDavid, and Leon Draisaitl, noting how their on-ice chemistry resulted in beautiful plays. One example discussed was Hyman's first goal, which was set up by a remarkable pass from McDavid, demonstrating the patience and vision that elite players possess. This discussion underscored the significance of teamwork and communication in achieving success on the ice. Evan Bouchard's Performance: The podcast also touched on Evan Bouchard's contributions and the criticisms he faces regarding his defensive skills. While both hosts acknowledged his offensive talent, they agreed that Bouchard needs to improve his defensive play, particularly during crucial moments. David recounted a story from Gary Galley about Ray Bourque, emphasizing that great players often take risks to make exceptional plays, which can lead to turnovers. This analogy served to frame the discussion about Bouchard, suggesting that while he may have defensive lapses, his offensive capabilities are invaluable. Conclusion: The Oilers' recent victory showcased not only individual brilliance but also the importance of teamwork and resilience. Zach Hyman's return to form is a promising sign for the team, as is the continued excellence of McDavid and Draisaitl. Additionally, while Bouchard's defensive play may need refinement, his offensive contributions are vital for the team's success. As the season progresses, monitoring these players' performances will be crucial for the Oilers' aspirations.

It's Friday afternoon, which means a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio is ready to massage your eardrums with an hour of off-season Oilers talk. On today's podcast, the fellas discussed the Stuart Skinner for Tristan Jarry trade, our new shiny toys, line combos, injury updates, line combos, and much more.We kicked off the Friday episode of ONR with a delicious debate about whether the Oilers are better on Friday than they were on Thursday night when they beat the Red Wings. Given that the Oilers traded both Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak to acquire Tristan Jarry before sending a 3rd round pick to Nashville to land Spencer Stastney, it's fair to wonder whether this was an upgrade or a lateral move.Shifting gears, the guys continued their trade analysis by breaking down Stan Bowman's post-trade quotes and whether making a change for the sake of change is the right move. While it's true that Tristan Jarry's numbers are better than Stuart Skinner's this season, that doesn't mean there aren't risks, like injury history, ebbs and flows, and wondering how these guys will perform on their new teams. The guys also spent some time looking at Thursday's win over the Detroit Red Wings and how it was a fantastic win after what was a disappointing outing against the Sabres on Tuesday. Finally, we wrapped up the Friday episode of ONR with another round of Ask the Idiots, betting talk for our friends at bet365, and Hot and Cold Performers to look back on the week that was. With the 2025-26 season well underway and trades happening, the guys spent the bulk of the Friday episode moving through a range of topics, some related to the Oilers and others not, but that's the way things go on a big news day.SHOUTOUT TO OUR SPONSORS!!Powered by @bet365. He also shared what it was like to play alongside Cam Talbot which then dove into some of Gazdic's favourite stories on the road.   It was then time for the Play Alberta Early Bird Bet of the day.   After the break we got into I Got Beef! Plenty of good beef from the boy's today.   Reid Wilkins finished the second hour with his beef, thoughts on tomorrow's Christmas movie draft and a preview on tonight's game between the Oilers and Red Wings.

Valenti and Rico opened today's show with their thoughts on some comments made by Evan Petzold on Costa & Jansen this morning regarding what Scott Harris might have planned for the Tigers this offseason. They honed in on this topic until the third hour, when the show, as Valenti likes to say, lost cabin pressure. The guys did a CFB Blitz/In Football Today, talked about a mock trade for the Red Wings, and then reacted in real time to the breaking news that Michigan was firing Sherrone Moore. They stuck with the Moore news until the end of the show.

Is it time that Moritz Seider got more serious consideration for Norris Trophy votes...or maybe an even bigger trophy? Tune in as we begin by discussing the Detroit Red Wings and their crazy shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, including production from Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Patrick Kane, James van Riesmdyk, Alex DeBrincat, Moritz Seider, and others, a lack of goaltending from both Talbot and Merzlikins, blown leads and more from Todd McLellan's squad (4:00). Next, the Red Wings' bounceback win over the Seattle Kraken, including an all 2003 Draft Class goal from Emmitt Finnie, Nate Danielson, and Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Larkin and Danielson both returning after being hit by pucks, John Gibson hanging on for the win, and Andrew Copp, JVR, and Patrick Kane (in a classic Showtime moment called by Ken Daniels) leading the scoring charge. Also, notes on McLellan's team's offensive metrics, upcoming games, & more (16:00). We then take a look at Moritz Seider both by the eye test and the numbers this season, whether he deserves serious Norris Trophy consideration behind Cale Makar and alongside players like Morrissey, Werenski, Heiskanen, and others, how he's helped Simon Edvinsson excel, and whether MVP voting is crazy to think about (29:20). After that, Sebastian Cossa, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, and the Grand Rapids Griffins' record start in the AHL (as well as Rudy Guimond's QMJHL accolades) (39:30), and NHL news including a Quinn Hughes update, Erik Gustafsson trade rumors and what Steve Yzerman might demand in return, and a potential longshot trade target in Phillip Danault (43:10).
