Hi everybody, and welcome to  Red Wings Rant: Where tirades and impassioned pleas about your Detroit Red Wings, finally, have a home.  The Detroit Red Wings have hired Derek LaLonde to be the new Head Coach. LaLonde comes into the Detroit Red Wings organization with a long resume. Along with his long resume, LaLonde has won two Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Jon Cooper in the 2020 and 2021 seasons. LaLonde began his coaching career at Ferris State University, where he took over for Jeff Blashill. After a stop at the University of Denver, LaLonde was given a chance to be a head coach of the Green Bay Gamblers, where they took home a league championship. Derek LaLonde then moved to the Toledo Walleye, where he took the franchise from worst to first in one season, which earned him a chance to lead the Iowa Wild for 2 seasons in the AHL as head coach. Then Steve Yzerman brought in LaLonde to be an assistant coach on Jon Cooper's staff for the Tampa Bay Lightning, where they won two straight Stanley Cups. Now, the new Red Wings head coach, LaLonde will jump right into NHL Draft duty, with the Red Wings drafting 8th overall on July 8th. Then, LaLonde will take over Larkin, Seider, and Lucas Raymond as they continue to build and grow into a strong playoff contender. Episode sponsored by Draft Kings. Our first big move of the offseason is here in the form of a trade between the Minnesota Wild and Los Angeles Kings. The Wild sent Kevin FIala to LA in exchange for defenseman Brock Faber and a 1st round pick in this years draft (no. 19). The Kings turned around and immediately signed Fiala to a seven year deal worth $55 million. With Minnesota knowing they would not have been able to sign Fiala to a long term deal, moving him was inevitable, and the Kings were the team Minnesota chose to deal with. The Tampa Bay Lightning might have just lost the Stanley Cup, but now they lost an assistant coach to the Detroit Red Wings. Steve Yzerman hired Derek Lalonde when Yzerman was a part of the Lightning organization. Now he has plucked him away from Tampa to be the new head coach of the Wings. Good move? NHL – National Hockey League – 2022 Stanley Cup Finals Last Night Colorado Avalanche 2, Tampa Bay Lightning 1                    (COL Wins 4-2) Avalanche 2, Lightning 1 – Avalanche dethrone Lightning to win Stanley Cup for 3rd time The Colorado Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup after dethroning the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning. The Avalanche beat the Lightning 2-1 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final behind a goal and an assist from Nathan MacKinnon and the cup clinching goal from Artturi Lehkonen. Tampa Bay fell two victories short of becoming the NHL's first three-peat champion since the early 1980s New York Islanders dynasty. Colorado's core led by MacKinnon, captain Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen and longest-tenured player Erik Johnson finally got the job done after years of playoff disappointments. It's the franchise's third championship and first since 2001. Colorado Defenseman Cale Makar, who won the Norris Trophy, also wins the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the Stanley Cup playoffs. He's only the third player to do that and first since Nicklas Lidstrom won both in 2002 for the Detroit Red Wings. NHL – Daly hands Stanley Cup to Avalanche in Bettman's absence NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly presented the Stanley Cup to Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog in Commissioner Gary Bettman's absence. Bettman previously tested positive for the coronavirus and was unable to produce enough negative results to get back to the series in time. It's the first time someone other than Bettman has handed out the Cup and Conn Smythe trophy since Bettman became commissioner in the 1993 season. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Arizona Diamondbacks 11, Detroit Tigers 7 Chicago White Sox 4, Baltimore Orioles 3 Chicago Cubs 6, St. Louis Cardinals 5 – 10 Diamondback 11, Tigers 7 – Varsho, Smith help drive Arizona's 11-7 win over Detroit Daulton Varsho hit a three-run homer, Pavin Smith had a career-high four hits and three RBIs and the Arizona Diamondbacks avoided a series sweep with a 11-7 win over the Detroit Tigers. David Peralta also had three hits for Arizona, which snapped a five-game losing streak. Varsho's homer was his 10th of the season, and came in a five-run sixth inning for Arizona. Former American League Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel made his debut for the Diamondbacks and gave up six hits and four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Reliever J.B. Wendelken (2-1) got the win for Arizona. Detroit starter Beau Brieske allowed five hits and five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Eric Haase homered and had three RBIs for Detroit. White Sox 4, Orioles 3 – Cease strikes out 13, White Sox hold off Orioles 4-3 Dylan Cease struck out a career-high 13 over seven innings, Gavin Sheets homered and the Chicago White Sox avoided a four-game sweep, hanging on to beat Baltimore 4-3 after the Orioles scored twice in the ninth inning. The Orioles, aided by two errors by first baseman José Abreu, loaded the bases against Kendall Graveman with none out before Jonathan Araúz lined an RBI single. After pinch hitter Rougned Odor struck out, Cedric Mullins cut it to 4-3 with a sacrifice fly. Graveman struck out Trey Mancini, and the White Sox came away with the win after losing four straight. Cubs 6, Cardinals 5 – F/10 – Cubs overcome 5-run deficit to beat Cards 6-5, Flaherty hurt Willson Contreras hit a tiebreaking single in the 10th inning to drive in his third run of the game, and the Chicago Cubs overcame a five-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5. St. Louis led 5-0 but starter Jack Flaherty left after two innings because of right shoulder tightness, and the Cubs tied the score with a five-run fourth. The Cardinals have lost three of their last four games and seven of their last 10. Contreras hit a tying two-run single in the fourth and led off the 10th with an RBI single off Zack Thompson. The Avalanche beat the Lightning to win the Stanley Cup last night, sending the trophy back to Colorado for the first time since 2001. It was an era when the Avalanche, and their archrivals the Detroit Red Wings, were engaged in a multi-year blood feud that became the center of the hockey universe. It was a rivalry perhaps best remembered for a game played 25 years ago, on March 26, 1997 in Detroit's Joe Lewis Arena, and is now better remembered as “Fight Night at the Joe.” During the first period, Detroit's Darren McCarty sought revenge on Colorado's Claude Lemieux for a violent check in the previous year's playoffs on the Red Wings' Kris Draper. The hit caused severe injuries to Draper's face, enraging the Red Wings, who were furious that Lemieux refused to even apologize to Draper. Now, a quarter-century later, those who were part of it are opening up about what made the rivalry so intense, as part of the latest E:60 special “Unvrivaled.” Detroit native Dave Fleming joins us to discuss the trajectory of the rivalry and why we may never see anything like it again.
