Hi Leute, Janny hier. Prost!Support the show

Skippy and Doogles dig into the weird state of today's market: IPOs are rarer, companies are older, profitability is harder to find, and a lot of the action has disappeared into private markets. Using Jay Ritter's IPO data as a jumping off point, they compare today's IPO landscape to the dot-com era and ask whether the public market data is missing the real story. Bubbly valuations, massive market concentration, shaky consumer sentiment, private credit concerns, happy hour economics, and the newly coined “Dog's Life Economy,” where everyone keeps running full speed until something breaks.Join the premium Skippy and Doogles fan club. If sparkling wine feels like it's either too expensive, too pretentious, or just not your thing... you haven't had Sekt. German sparkling Riesling is the fruity, zippy, under-$20 bubbly that sparkling wine lovers, especially Prosecco drinkers, have been sleeping on, and in this episode, we are here to fix that. Discover why Germany is the world's largest sparkling wine market, and why the controversial Charmat method actually makes a superior sparkling Riesling versus doing it in the traditional or Champagne method. Hint: the Charmat method helps preserve Riesling's signature floral aromatics and stone fruit and orchard fruit flavors instead of burying them under yeasty, toasty notes. In this episode, we taste two Mosel Sekt bottles side by side, and tell you if either of them is worth buying. And we make lots of cringy jokes about Sekt. What else would you expect from us?!? If you are curious to find a new sparkling wine to try, or just haven't found a sparkling wine that you love yet, then this is the episode for you! Wines reviewed in this episode: Loosen Bros. Designated drivers are fantasticMidnight gets the fireworks, the kiss, and the champagne pop—but what if bourbon claimed the next minute? We take a hard look at how bubbles became the default celebration drink and map out a practical, repeatable ritual that lets whiskey own 12:01. The idea is simple and social: a one‑ounce Midnight Pour, raised together, followed by a signature afterpour that's easy to build at any party. No lectures. No elitism. Just a clear, shared moment that anyone—new sipper or seasoned collector—can join.We unpack the psychology of celebration, from effervescence and spectacle to the way rituals anchor holidays. Champagne mastered the countdown with visuals and tradition; bourbon leaned into firesides and heritage. That brand posture works all winter but misses the energy at midnight. So we reframe the lane: champagne is for the kiss, bourbon is for the promise—new goals, new risks, new chapters. To make it real, we outline a simple serve (think one ounce bourbon, a touch of maple or honey, big cube, orange peel) and a social playbook that shows friends clinking rocks glasses at 12:01. Make it visible. Make it repeatable. Let the ritual spread. We also dive into a rare tasting: Old Louisville's Cathedral, a Bardstown-crafted blend finished in French oak from timber selected for the Notre Dame restoration. Expect assertive oak, leather, char, and a long, tobacco‑tilted finish with a remarkably balanced body. If you love aged profiles over sweetness, this pour sings and underscores why bourbon excels at meaning and momentum after the countdown.Join us as we sketch a new tradition that doesn't replace champagne, but completes the night. If the Midnight Pour speaks to you, share it with a friend, tag us with your 12:01 toast, and help us build a ritual worth keeping. Marta Norton, chief investment strategist at Empower, says the stock market has high valuations, but notes that it lacks the excessive economic risk-taking and the fear-of-missing-out sentiment that are necessary to create true bubble conditions. But she notes that avoiding a bubble doesn;t mean it's smooth sailing ahead, as she says in Empower's outlook for 2026 that she expects anemic job growth to be a primary economic story. That jobs picture puts the Federal Reserve "between a rock and a hard place and maybe a third hard place," with the labor market making it tough for the central bank to cut rates. As a result, she's suggesting that investors rebalance portfolios, downplay their expectations and anticipate heightened volatility. Julius de Kempenaer, senior technical analyst at StockCharts, says that the market currently is going through a rotation to where "Right now, defense is the play," with money moving to health care, utilities and consumer staples, all defensive sectors. He is expecting the next six to eight weeks to be frothy and to determine whether the recent move away from highs is a blip or a real correction, but he warns that the upside for the Standard and Poor's 500 is "littered with resistance," and "the ease of movement seems to be to the downside." Plus, in the market Call, Dom Rizzo, portfolio manager for the T. Rowe Price Technology ETF and the T. Rowe Price Global Technology Fund talks about how he looks for linchpin technologies in growth markets, with improving fundamentals and, hopefully, reasonable valuations, and just how he determines who makes that grade now.
Would every company be affected if the AI bubble were to burst? That's what Sundar Pichai, the head of Google's parent firm Alphabet reckons. The facts are startling, with the crypto market shedding more than $1tn in six weeks amid fears that the bubble may just go pop. With bitcoin price at its lowest level since April and the FTSE 100 falling, the guys at the top still say they absolutely do NOT think there'll be a burst. That normally goes well right? In UK News, Philip has started somewhat of an X meltdown. He reported that British abortion rates as a % of pregnancies are exploding in spite of recent innovations in contraception. Warning that this a major signal that something is deeply wrong in the economy. Is Britain heading to an almighty demographic crash-out, leading to an immigration boom?Meanwhile in Mexico, after thousands of demonstrators marched in the capital on Saturday to protest against violent crime President Sheinbaum has again dismissed Trump's threat of sending in US troops. Sheinbaum said the marches, which also took place in other cities, had been funded by right-wing politicians who oppose her government. Could the US be trying to encourage a colour revolution? While Trump continues to keep eyes on his armada in the southern Caribbean, close to Venezuela, who's to say? And would it even work?Still hungry for more? Philip sat down to converse with Jacques Sapir, a leading expert on the Russian economy, and part of the Institute of Economic War in Paris, to chat all things Russia, for the Danube Institute. Scientists are tuning in to seagrasses. That may tell them how much carbon the grass is storing—an important detail in understanding our changing climate. Seagrass beds are among the most efficient carbon-storage depots on Earth. But it's hard to know how much total carbon they're socking away, and how the amount changes over time. Researchers have to dig up patches of grass and sediment and analyze them in the lab. But scientists at the University of Texas at Austin are working on a new technique. Seagrasses take up carbon dioxide from the water and produce sugars with the energy of sunlight. They store the carbon in their tissues. But so much oxygen builds up that the grasses begin to blow bubbles. As the bubbles are released, they make noise. And as the seagrass soaks up more carbon dioxide, it makes more bubbles. The researchers are developing a system that uses underwater microphones to record the sound. The sensors could cover wide areas and operate around the clock, all year long. The scientists conducted a two-year test in Corpus Christi Bay. They listened to the natural sounds, plus artificial pulses of sound produced by the equipment. Together, that allowed the researchers to probe the oxygen in the seagrass and the water. The test showed clear changes in the soundscape as the amount of bubbles changed over daily and yearly cycles. It also told them how much seagrass was present and how healthy it was—“tuning in” to the sound of seagrass. The post Bubbly Seagrass appeared first on Marine Science Institute. How is the Spanish sparkling wine Cava different from the Italian bubbly Prosecco? What makes Xarel·lo stand out from Spain's other traditional Cava grapes? How did Alicante's Monastrell grape give rise to the rare Fondillón wine, and what makes it different from Port or Sherry? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Sarah Jane Evans, author of the terrific new book The Wines of Central and Southern Spain: From Catalunya to Cadiz. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks. Giveaway Two of you are going to win a copy of Sarah Jane Evans' wonderful new book, The Wines of Central and Southern Spain: From Catalunya to Cadiz. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights What do you need to know about Xarel·lo and Spanish sparkling wine? How does Cava compare to Prosecco? What effect does the aging process used for premium Cavas have on their taste profile, and how does it compare to Champagne? What is the historical significance of the Terra Alta region? Which historical artifacts has Sarah Jane encountered while visiting Spanish vineyards? How does Richard Ford's 1840s observation about Valencia still define Spanish wine culture in the Valencia region? What might surprise you about the ancient amphorae in Valencia and how they're used in modern winemaking? How do the three main styles of Sherry differ? Which types of glassware and food pair best with Sherry? What are copitas, and how do they differ from other glasses used for Sherry? How does serving temperature affect our enjoyment of Sherry? What do you need to know about wine and the Canary Islands? What challenges and opportunities does Sarah Jane see for the future of the Spanish wine industry? Key Takeaways How is the Spanish sparkling wine Cava different from the Italian bubbly Prosecco? Prosecco bubbles are created and captured in the tank to make it a pleasantly fizzy drink. Whereas Cava is made exactly like Champagne. It's aged in the bottle with its yeast. It begins to develop other aromas which are nothing to do with flowers or fruits. The youngest Cava, can be released at nine months, younger than the youngest Champagne. If you're going to have a very young fizzy wine, then Prosecco is very appealing. What makes Xarel·lo stand out from Spain's other traditional Cava grapes? People have started to recognise that this white grape variety, once just a component in blending, can be grown on its own and produces lovely, fresh, excitingly lively wines that are not very high in alcohol. If you're making Cava, it's the one that will last. It has a capacity to age, which is better than the other two. How did Alicante's Monastrell grape give rise to the rare Fondillón wine, and what makes it different from Port or Sherry? Alicante is one of the places for Monastrell. Historically, they used to make a wine out of this red grape that got so ripe they didn't need to fortify it because the grape on the vine got so sweet that it turned itself into alcohol. Then it was a wine that was stable enough you could have it in a barrel. Then you could send it to India or to Africa, all around the world. About Sarah Jane Evans Sarah Jane is an award-winning writer. She travels widely as an educator and consultant, and is a Contributing Editor to Decanter. Her books include The Wines of Central and Southern Spain, The Wines of Northern Spain, Seville, Chocolate Unwrapped, and also the entries on Spain and Sherry for the annual Hugh Johnson Pocket Wine Guide. Grammy-winning artist Colbie Caillat sits down for an intimate conversation about the winding road from MySpace sensation to seasoned songwriter. With her trademark warmth and authenticity, she reveals how music was always coursing through her veins—singing at the top of her lungs every morning as a child and eventually being guided toward songwriting by her father's wisdom that it would "be more meaningful."The conversation takes us through the unexpected explosion of "Bubbly" that catapulted her career, to touring with John Mayer in 2009, to her transformative relationship with vulnerability on stage. "I was taught to try to be extroverted and don't let anyone know that you're nervous," Colbie shares, describing how writing "Try" became the turning point that freed her from hiding her true self. "I just tell the audience everything on stage now. It feels so nice."Colbie's upcoming album "This Time Around" (releasing September 26th) reimagines her greatest hits as duets with artists including Maren Morris, Hillary Scott, Walker Hayes, and Mitchell Tenpenny—many of whom had personal connections to her songs before the collaboration. "Mitchell was so cute because when I asked him to sing on 'Realize,' he's like 'that's my favorite song, I sang it in high school,'" she recalls with genuine delight. The album also features three new original songs, including one written with Lee Brice and another featuring Maddie & Tae.Whether discussing the creative process behind her Grammy-winning duet "Lucky" with Jason Mraz, her Christmas tour with best friend Gavin DeGraw, or the first song she ever wrote ("Someday," which she plans to release someday), Colbie's reflections on her journey offer wisdom for creators at any stage: "Trust yourself and have fun with it and really embrace who you are." Connect with Colbie at colbiecaillat.com to follow her continuing musical evolution.

#368 - Sippin' dip. Sydney Sweeney super secret. Bubbly booze. Gift for Throb. Career man. RFR hiatus. Lippy lady. Folktales. Storm Area 51. Diddler on the Roof. Basketball toys.
Rob Armstrong is the writer who first coined the acronym in The TACO Trade, which stands for Trump Always Chickens Out, in a column back in April. He wasn't trying to go viral, much less have the acronym circulate throughout Wall Street and the media, much less have President Trump be asked about it. But that's what happened. Armstrong is the Unhedged columnist and podcaster at the Financial Times. He also had a prior career at a hedge fund, which abruptly ended in the Great Financial Crisis of 2008. He also has a PhD in philosophy, making him an unusual figure in the world of finance and economics journalism. The topics he writes about reflect this varied background. He and Cardiff reflect on the strangeness of coining a term that has such reverberations in a prominent national conversation, in this case the one surrounding President Trump's tariff strategy, and whether the trade itself still applies. They also discuss how the feedback loops created by the acronym represent the fundamental nature of markets and the ways that societal narratives get around these days. But the main part of their chat is about US markets at the moment. Are they in a bubble? Why has there not been more of a negative effect from tariffs? And why has the US dollar fallen — and stayed fallen — while US stocks have returned to all-time highs just this week? What should we make of the horrific returns on long-term Treasuries this decade? And are higher interest rates truly here to stay? They also discuss Rob's switch from working in finance to writing about it, and his recent column on Rene Girard and the mimetic rivalries that seem to define this political moment. Finally, they close with a surprising topic that Rob frequently also writes and speaks about: men's fashion.
