What's up Cuse Nation?!?! Syracuse with and unfortunate event...a one point loss to Hofstra. Was it bad officiating? Was it Syracuse shooting themselves in the foot? Was it bad coaching? All of those options are on the table. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Syracuse basketball's 70-69 loss to Hofstra was inexcusable. But so was the officiating in that game. As Brent Axe describes in a live edition of Syracuse Sports, both things things can be true and were factors in the loss at the JMA Dome on Saturday night. Axe also comes back to the Groundhog Day topic of SU's poor free-throw shooting (which is literally the worst in Division I basketball at 56.8%) being an achilles heel that will cost SU more games if it doesn't improve. Axe also reacts to soundbites from Adrian Autry, Kiyan Anthony, JJ Starling and more pus checks in with Syracuse Sports Insiders to get their take on the loss. Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 71-63 win over St. Joseph's at the JMA Dome on Thursday night. It wasn't a pretty game at all for the Orange, who got worked in the paint (St. Joe's out-rebounded SU 44-34) and just couldn't find a rhythm on offense. Axe described the combination of factors that led to such a blah night at the Dome. SU had 9 days off entering the game. It was a late 9 p.m on a snowy night in Syracuse. Players had exams this week and a few were under the weather. As Axe discussed, that doesn't excuse a few concerning patterns the Orange have with a lack of offensive identity and its terrible free-throw shooting, but at least they were able to dig deep and grind out a win. Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 62-60 win over No. 13 Tennessee at the JMA Dome on Tuesday night. SU earned a much-needed signature non-conference win by taking down the Vols at the JMA Dome on Tuesday night. Not only for its NCAA Tournament resume, but to show the Orange fanbase and itself it could punch up and win a big game like this after losing three straight games to ranked teams in Las Vegas at the Players' Era Festival. Axe discusses how the defensive presence of William Kyle III (and surprisingly his free throws!) helped lift SU to victory along with a strong first half by Nate Kingz with 19 points and JJ Starling stepping up as a senior leader. Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 80-71 loss to Kansas in Las Vegas on Tuesday night. Syracuse failed to find an offensive rhythm or go-to guy with Donnie Freeman on the bench with an injury for the 2nd straight game. SU shot 32% (20-63) with a 7-30 (23%) mark from 3-point range against the Jayhawks. SU struggled from the free throw line against Kansas, shooting 13-23 (56.5%). Kiyan Anthony was 2-12 against the Jayhawks, including 0-6 from 3-point range. Axe explains on the show how SU head coach Adrian Autry has to be careful with how much of a green light Anthony gets on offense if he's taking bad shots and doesn't have a noticeable matchup advantage. Axe also discussed how SU's losses to Houston and Kansas in Las Vegas put on added importance to SU's upcoming non-conference game against Tennessee at the JMA Dome. Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 95-64 loss to Iowa State in Las Vegas. After trailing by just one point at halftime, the Orange got blasted by the Cyclones in the second half (60-30) who went on to thump Syracuse by 31 points. Axe discussed how SU's 3-game stop in Las Vegas starting off promising but turned into a complete bust and how that reflects on SU head coach Adrian Autry (hint: not great). Axe also talks about how SU's next game at Tennessee becomes an absolute must-win for the Orange and how no player stepped up enough to lead in Donnie Freeman's absence. Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 78-74 loss to Houston in overtime at the Player's Era Festival in Las Vegas. #FreeThrowsMatter always, but SU's 12-of-29 (41%) performance at the stripe against the Cougars in Las Vegas was especially costly, tossing aside what would have been a major non-conference win for SU's NCAA Tournament resume. There were still a lot of positives to take away from the game and Axe discussed those with plenty of feedback from Syracuse Sports Insiders! Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 78-73 win over Monmouth on Tuesday night at the JMA Dome. The good news is SU survived a late scare by Monmouth and escaped with the win to improve to 4-0. The bad news is Syracuse has an issue at the free throw line, shooting 58% (19-33) against the Hawks. SU senior guard JJ Starling really struggled at the line in his return to the lineup with injury, appearing to have a glitch in his shooting stroke and as Starling told Axe in the locker room after the game, a mental and focus issue he needs to overcome at the charity stripe. Axe discusses the concern of trusting Starling, a player who thrives in driving to the rim, with the ball in late-game situations if his free-throw shooting is broken. Axe also discusses the key differences that have emerged between this year's Orange team and last, SU's late-start rebounding issues and other items it needs to button up before facing Houston and Kansas in Las Vegas next week. Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 80-50 win over Drexel in Philadelphia. SU went to halftime with just a 5-point lead over Drexel (37-32) and was out-rebounded 19-9 in the first half, but dropped the hammer on the Dragons in the 2nd half, out-scoring Drexel 43-18 and out-rebounding the Dragons 27-20. Brent also examines what Coach Red Autry should do when JJ Starling returns to the lineup with Kiyan Anthony playing so well in his absence and discusses SU's renewed commitment to defense and how much more watchable and fun the Orange have been so far this season compared to last. Brent Axe recap's Syracuse basketball's 85-47 win over Binghamton in the 2025-26 season opener. The Orange brought some fun back to the JMA Dome with some up-and-down play, lots of dunks, great defense and a total of five players in double figures. Axe discusses Kiyan Anthony's impressive debut and the three-level scoring he brings to the table. Donnie Freeman's return with 20 points and the noticeable difference between the first game this season vs. a nail-biter against Le Moyne last year. What's up Cuse Nation?!?! Well, the season has come to an end. I think we're all ready to forget this year. Bottom line Syracuse basketball will never be back to the "standard" if we continue to come to the table with chump change.
Brent Axe and Chris Carlson discuss how Syracuse basketball's roster will take shape in the transfer portal now that the 2024-25 season is over on a live edition of Syracuse Sports. Brent and Chris review Syracuse basketball's loss to SMU and offer some final thoughts on that game, the season and review some postgame commentary from head coach Adrian Autry that resonated with the Syracuse fanbase. Brent Axe chats live following SU basketball's season-ending 73-53 loss to SMU in the ACC Tournament. The Orange finished 14-19, the most losses in a season for Syracuse since a 2-22 campaign in the 1961-62 season. SU trailed by just three points at halftime (31-28) but shot 8-of-30 in the 2nd half and were out-scored by SMU 42-25 after halftime, ending one of the most disappointing seasons in SU history. What's up Cuse Nation?!?! Syracuse pulls off a win to end the regular season. Can they make some noise in the ACC tournament? We shall see.
Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 84-70 win over Virginia at the JMA Dome. SU put together one of its best defensive efforts in recent memory, smothering Virginia's shooters to force the Cavaliers into a 3-of-15 shooting night from 3-point range. Eddie Lampkin was terrific in the paint once again with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Jyare Davis and Lucas Taylor also scored 15 points each for the Orange. So now the question is how much of this can Syracuse carry forward into the ACC Tournament and are the Orange capable of stringing together a run in Charlotte? Brent got plenty of feedback from Syracuse Sports Insiders on that question and the win over Virginia. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Brent Axe chats live following SMU's 77-75 win over Syracuse on Tuesday night. The Orange found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory again as it let another double-digit lead evaporate into a loss. SMU scored on 15 of its last 16 possessions and dominated in the paint in the 2nd half (28-10) to squeeze out the two-point win over SU despite a 13-of-27 performance at the free throw line. Axe discussed how the 2024-25 season could end up without a signature moment for SU (a win Tuesday would be about as close as they have come to it) and the gargantuan task ahead to put a 12-18 (6-13) team back into the NCAA Tournament conversation. What's up Cuse Nation?!?! Syracuse goes one and one in their last two games. You'll hear from us and we'll hear from you in Fan Feedback!
Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 74-60 win over NC State. It was a win for the Orange in which it led from start-to-finish and now it looks like SU will avoid having the Scarlet Letter of one of 3 teams that don't qualify for the ACC Tournament. Axe breaks down how JJ Starling came alive in scoring 15 of his 17 points in the 2nd half, how SU was able to dominate the paint and how sometimes you just have to take what a bad team gives you. Axe also discusses the highly-inflated number Syracuse reported for attendance and how SU fans, while happy to get a win, are more interested in what awaits in rebuilding the roster in the transfer portal. On the latest episode of Syracuse Sports, Brent Axe chats with syracuse.com's Mike Waters on how transfer portal misses and a lack of NIL resources led to a lost year for Syracuse basketball. Are the Orange better prepared for the upcoming transfer portal window and do they have the money to spend in NIL to attract needed talent? Mike and Brent also discuss the immediate road ahead for the Orange as they try to clinch a spot in the ACC Tournament. Brent then chats with actress, producer, entrepreneur and best-selling author La La Anthony. La La's son, Kiyan, is an incoming high-profile recruit for Syracuse basketball next season. Anthony and Axe discuss the bright spotlight Kiyan grew up in with his father, Carmelo, being an Orange and NBA legend and his mother being famous. Is she ready to send her son to college? Will she be bringing Kim Kardashian or any of her other famous friends to the JMA Dome next season? La La also describes what she is most proud of with Kiyan and also shares a message about a cause near and dear to her heart. Music provided by Hell Yeah So What. Find them in YouTube and Spotify. Syracuse held a 16-point lead over Pitt but were out-scored 46-28 in the 2nd half with yet another defensive meltdown. Syracuse lost despite hitting a season-high 14 3-pointers. Brent turned over most of this postgame pod to Syracuse Sports Insiders to vent about this game, one of the worst losses in one of the worst seasons in recent memory for SU, one in which the Orange now finds itself on the bubble of even qualifying for the ACC Tournament. Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 88-82 loss to North Carolina. Another lackluster defensive effort haunted SU against the Tar Heels, wasting a 26-point night from Eddie Lampkin and 22 points from JJ Starling. SU's guiding light now with five games to go in the season is to avoid being left out of the ACC Tournament. Brent also discussed how he was was put to sleep by Adrian Autry's postgame presser and talked about how it demonstrated that even though the Orange play hard, they are just going through the motions four games below .500 with an 11-15 record. Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 91-84 loss to Miami on Tuesday night. Brent discusses how It was the rock bottom loss for Syracuse under head coach Adrian Autry. Sure, SU has been blown out by 29-points to Duke and has several double-digit losses this season, but losing to a 5-18 team with one ACC win this season entering Tuesday night's game? That's about as low as it gets. Axe discusses how Syracuse AD John Wildhack will struggle to convince the Orange fanbase that Autry is the right guy going forward for SU basketball with the bad losses piling up. Syracuse's big issue against the Hurricanes was defense, or lack thereof, a consistent problem for the Orange all season that has not improved but was at its worst against Miami. Brent Axe and Chris Carlson discuss the downfall of Syracuse basketball and the latest Orange sports topics on "Syracuse Sports" live! Brent and Chris start with the SU's 83-54 loss to Duke, the worst loss of the 2024-25 season for SU and Duke's 10th straight win over the Orange. How can SU close the gap with the best team in the ACC? Does Syracuse have the money to buy its way out of their problems and should SU fans believe in Adrian Autry as the guy that can lead the Orange out of the below .500 abyss they find themselves in? Axe and Carlson also discuss SU offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon's contract extension/raise and how it demonstrates the new world SU football is in to maintain the success found in the first season of the Fran Brown era. Brent also got amazing feedback from Syracuse Sports Insiders (even late into the night!) on the loss to Duke. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Brent Axe breaks down Syracuse basketball's 70-61 loss to Stanford. The Orange dug itself way too deep of a hole to escape in trailing Stanford 25-2 in the first-half. While SU did cut the lead down to six points late in the game, it couldn't do enough to overcome Stanford, who never trailed against Syracuse. Axe broke down SU's poor starts and the other stat that keeps sinking games for SU, points off turnovers. SU gave up 19 points off 14 turnovers. With SU heading for a losing season, Axe wonders how low things could sink for SU and if Adrian Autry can find an identity for this team and give the fan base something to cling on to other than a good recruiting class coming in for 2025. Brent also got amazing feedback from Syracuse Sports Insiders (even late into the night!) on the loss to Stanford. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 86-72 loss to Clemson on Wednesday night. SU's first-half struggles continued at Clemson as the Tigers out-scored SU 28-10 in the last 10 minutes of the 2nd half. Clemson also dominated points in the paint (40-20) and points off turnovers (19-4). The 14-point loss was SU's sixth double-digit defeat of the 2024-25 season. JJ Starling was one of the lone bright spots for the Orange with 25 points but Brent describes how SU needs more balance on offense and more movement on offense to generate more points. Brent also got amazing feedback from Syracuse Sports Insiders on SU's loss to Clemson. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Axe also describes how JJ Starling was able to break free to score 16 of his 21 points in the 2nd half, the wild ending to the game and why Notre Dame's head coach flipped out and a major weakness SU needs to overcome.
