In this episode, Chuck Todd explores the growing bipartisan momentum to rein in Big Tech, noting that while social media’s unintended consequences have already eroded truth and public trust, AI could amplify those failures without strong guardrails. He breaks down why Americans overwhelmingly support protecting kids from tech harms—and why a public revolt is inevitable once people feel they’ve lost control. Chuck also looks at how massive AI investment is masking broader economic weakness before turning to Donald Trump’s botched economic message in Pennsylvania, a “let them eat cake” tone that echoes the same political trap Biden once fell into. With surprising Democratic wins in Miami and Georgia and a demoralizing trend inside the GOP base, the political landscape is shifting fast, especially as ACA subsidies near expiration and no healthcare compromise is in sight. Chuck then pivots to the rise of prediction markets—how they move on insider information, how they could be manipulated by political actors, and why the “casinofication” of news threatens to reduce all political coverage to a risky, easily gamed horse race. Then, journalist and founder of MAMA (Mothers Against Media Addiction), Julie Scelfo, joins Chuck ToddCast for a wide-ranging conversation on one of the most urgent issues facing American families: the collapse of trust in media, the rise of unregulated tech, and its profound impact on children’s mental health. Scelfo explains how the explosion of social media and smartphones—coupled with virtually nonexistent regulation—has left kids exposed to harmful algorithms, addictive design, and misinformation at formative ages. With both the left and right now pushing to get smartphones out of classrooms, she argues that we’re long past due for meaningful guardrails, especially as Big Tech’s lobbying power grows and federal leaders threaten to block states from regulating AI. Chuck and Julie compare today’s fight with Big Tech to the battle against Big Tobacco, explore why recommendation systems effectively make platforms publishers, and discuss the growing bipartisan appetite for banning iPads in schools and returning to books. They also dig into MAMA’s mission to protect children in a digital world—emphasizing that kids under two should not be exposed to screens, that early childhood development depends on real-world interaction, and that “tech nannies” have emerged because childcare is unaffordable. Scelfo calls for mandatory data transparency from tech companies, stronger child-safety legislation in the states, and a culture shift that prioritizes healthy offline development over the race to dominate AI. With future jobs uncertain and social skills declining, she argues that society must resist sacrificing sensible regulation in the name of innovation—and recognize that too much time online isn’t just unhealthy, it’s shaping a generation. The state by state by territories part of The Year In Beer series kicks off, as ever, in Western Australia where we're joined by Crafty contributors Guy Southern and Jono Outred to give us the lowdown on the state's beer scene. Their wide-ranging report takes in chaos, collaboration and consolidation, beer venues gaining accolades in the wider hospo world, new openings and big name comebacks, fruity beers, West Coast pilsners, “naughty” beers and more. They're followed by Rocky Ridge co-founders Hamish Coates and Mel Holland, who reflect on a mammoth year for the brewery and its expanding venue offering. We discuss balancing acts, brewing 100-plus beers in a year, their focus on people, concerns about the potential impact of climate change on ingredients, and their desire to help others become more sustainable operators by sharing their learnings from over the years.Wrapping up the episode is Chris Bausor, who operates events company Bar Pop with wife Jemma. They celebrated ten years of Froth Town this year, enjoying rare ongoing success in the challenging major events space. As his team prepared to host Franz Ferdinand at the Ice Cream Factory, Chris spoke about the importance of keeping the “Holy Trinity” happy as well as the decisions they face about where to take the festival in its second decade. We also unveil the latest good beer citizen in our Have You Done A Rallings? campaign. The Year In Beer 2025 series will run every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until December 23.

Conceptual "dog" sound effects, a surreal experience with Ray Davies, and a spiritual Californian yard sale. John Myrtle "Originally hailing from Birmingham and now based in London, John Myrtle began carving his brand of slightly off-kilter, loveable bedroom pop in 2019 with demos he uploaded to SoundCloud. Having caught the ears of Marc Riley on BBC 6 Music, John was invited to play a live session, and soon his EP ‘Here's John Myrtle' was self-recorded to tape and released to critical acclaim from the likes of The Line of Best Fit, Brooklyn Vegan, DIY and So Young Magazine. John followed this up with home-produced mini-album Myrtle Soup in 2021, which was met with equal critical praise and garnered fans from the likes of Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos, Summer Salt, The Walters and Foxygen member and producer Jonathan Rado - whom John's 2024 single ‘How Do You Break a Heart?' was produced by. Recently, John has embarked on several tours across Europe and the rest of the world supporting the likes of Kate Bollinger and Cut Worms, and John is set to delight and warm hearts with his most accomplished album yet this summer. ‘Irresistible' - Marc Riley, BBC 6 Music ‘John is creating his own world of sonic magic' - So Young Magazine ‘Pop that's wonderfully lost in time' - Brooklyn Vegan" Excerpt from https://open.spotify.com/artist John Myrtle: Bandcamp: https://johnmyrtle.bandcamp.com Instagram: @john__myrtle Website: https://www.johnmyrtle.co.uk Records: https://johnmyrtle.bandcamp.com Merch: https://www.johnmyrtle.co.uk/shop The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@thevineyardpodcast

Within a month of recording, the year's most politically important event happened—and NOBODY in the West covered it. India and Pakistan (combined population larger than Russia-Ukraine) exchanged missiles across borders in an escalation eerily mirroring 1914's Franz Ferdinand assassination. Two industrialized multi-ethnic empires fighting over terrorist proxies while alliance networks threaten continental war. Our media's total blackout reveals how completely we've lost track of global reality. Fantastic gardener that took a wrong turn and cause the first world war. What a guy.
When you think of the First World War, what springs to mind? Is it trench warfare? The myth that troops would be home by Christmas? Or perhaps the idea that the whole thing began because of the assassination of an Austro-Hungarian archduke? In this episode, we're going beyond these narratives to consider alternative perspectives of the opening weeks of the conflict. Rachel Dinning is joined by historian Alex Churchill – co-author of new book 'Ring of Fire' alongside Nikolai Eberholst – to consider fresh perspectives of the conflict, highlighting the voices of ordinary people caught up in the war, as well as how it unfolded across the globe. Alex is the presenter of the new HistoryExtra academy series WW1: Myths and Misconceptions – which is out now and available to watch on the HistoryExtra App. In the series, Alex unpacks some of the most enduring myths about World War One – exploring topics such as the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the complexities of wartime neutrality, why the war didn't truly end on 11 November 1918, and much more. It's a real grab bag of news this week with Peter Davison critiquing the current series of Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi being cool as hell at Glastonbury, and a truly mammoth editorial by Chris about the Blu-ray for The War Games in Colour and the cost thereof given that it is only one disc. Somehow we get an hour out of this, and we also have an extensive interview with long-time friends and Televisual Specialists John Williams and Neil Perryman about their new podcast where they watch every television show ever made – World of Telly! Today's episode is a tale of two archetypes: the Productivity Power User who color-codes their calendar like it's a Kandinsky painting… and the Procrastinating Professor Slayer who tells himself he'll fix it tomorrow—which, incidentally, is always today when it arrives. Pete, whose relationship with task management involves quad-wielding to-do apps like a productivity warlock, faces off with Tommy, who uses his iPhone calendar like a grocery list taped to a parking meter.Together, they dismantle performative productivity (spoiler: it's emotional self-gaslighting with better fonts), unpack procrastination as an anxiety-fueled death spiral in a trench coat, and lovingly roast each other's ritualistic self-sabotage. There's a chilling tale of Franz Ferdinand, a beeper, and the exact moment the world spiraled into World War I. And if that doesn't scream “calendar hygiene matters,” then friend, you might already be scheduling your next collapse. This episode has everything: analog clock superiority, digital tool delusion, ADHD-fueled shame spirals, the dopamine hit of “not today,” and possibly the best joke ever made about lawn maintenance. It's not just a podcast episode. It's a panic productivity intervention disguised as comedy. You're welcome. Well if that was the last Grand Prix at Imola for the forseeable future, it didn't leave us with a sour taste in the mouth and while it wasn't a classic race it was still better than some of the parades we've had round the circuit for the last 5 years since F1 made a return there in the patched together 2020 season. This week we take a look back at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the first of 2 Italian races this season and the start of the European races to boot. Could McLaren and in particular Oscar Piastri keep up their dominant form from the first quarter of the season, now we're not flying away as much, or with the appearance of a few upgrades (as is traditional at this time of year), would we see more than the papaya cars in the mix?The answer was both sort of yes and sort of no as Max Verstappen spoiled the papaya party this week by completely turning around a RedBull that he wasn't overly keen on up to Saturday afternoon to pull out his most Max-like performances of the season so far. After "that move" on turn 2, there was seemingly no stopping him from running away with it. Especially when McLaren decided to let their drivers race rather than try to strategise a win!Obviously we're as tangent heavy as always (for some reason that you'll hear) and we've ended up with Franz Ferdinand as our featured band of the week (when did this become a music pod?) And as a bonus, while he's not here this week, Dan has promised to be on more shows this year!If you want to join in with the chat during the races (along with practice and qualifying) head over to our Discord where there's always a great crowd of people to watch along with. And on the socials weve got our Facebook, Instagram, BlueSky & Twitter (or is it X) and Paul's attempts at Sim Racing on our Twitch channel.
