Having caught the ears of Marc Riley on BBC 6 Music, John was invited to play a live session, and soon his EP ‘Here's John Myrtle' was self-recorded to tape and released to critical acclaim from the likes of The Line of Best Fit, Brooklyn Vegan, DIY and So Young Magazine. John followed this up with home-produced mini-album Myrtle Soup in 2021, which was met with equal critical praise and garnered fans from the likes of Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos, Summer Salt, The Walters and Foxygen member and producer Jonathan Rado - whom John's 2024 single ‘How Do You Break a Heart?' was produced by.

Quand on l'a enregistrée, Françoise Hardy était encore là. Within a month of recording, the year's most politically important event happened—and NOBODY in the West covered it. India and Pakistan (combined population larger than Russia-Ukraine) exchanged missiles across borders in an escalation eerily mirroring 1914's Franz Ferdinand assassination. Two industrialized multi-ethnic empires fighting over terrorist proxies while alliance networks threaten continental war. Our media's total blackout reveals how completely we've lost track of global reality. Fantastic gardener that took a wrong turn and cause the first world war. What a guy.
When you think of the First World War, what springs to mind? Is it trench warfare? The myth that troops would be home by Christmas? Or perhaps the idea that the whole thing began because of the assassination of an Austro-Hungarian archduke? In this episode, we're going beyond these narratives to consider alternative perspectives of the opening weeks of the conflict. Rachel Dinning is joined by historian Alex Churchill – co-author of new book 'Ring of Fire' alongside Nikolai Eberholst – to consider fresh perspectives of the conflict, highlighting the voices of ordinary people caught up in the war, as well as how it unfolded across the globe. Alex is the presenter of the new HistoryExtra academy series WW1: Myths and Misconceptions – which is out now and available to watch on the HistoryExtra App. In the series, Alex unpacks some of the most enduring myths about World War One – exploring topics such as the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the complexities of wartime neutrality, why the war didn't truly end on 11 November 1918, and much more. Hey there was a big festival on last weekend, maybe you heard about it or read about it or watched it or something. Returning guest Richard Chambers was at the damn thing and so he duly relays Dave and Adam with a feature-length review in lieu of a Top 5, and let us tell you listener, this is a damn fine report. Also damn fine is the NO ENCORE Patreon - hit it up today for bonus content!ACT ONE: Dave gets intensely self-indulgent about another podcast. Hey, why not? ACT TWO (9:42): A scattershot enough news section takes in Oasis x Bohemians, a fake band doing numbers, and Adam's newest vinyl purchase. ACT THREE (26:45): Glastonbury 2025 in review featuring live reports of Supergrass, CMAT, Wet Leg, Franz Ferdinand, Alanis Morrisette, The 1975, Romy, Bob Vylan (and all the news fallout that came with that), Kneecap (ditto), Patchwork (aka Pulp), Skepta, Charli XCX, Gurriers, Rod Stewart, Snow Patrol, Overmono, and Olivia Rodrigo. As you might expect, a LOT to talk about. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's a real grab bag of news this week with Peter Davison critiquing the current series of Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi being cool as hell at Glastonbury, and a truly mammoth editorial by Chris about the Blu-ray for The War Games in Colour and the cost thereof given that it is only one disc. Today's episode is a tale of two archetypes: the Productivity Power User who color-codes their calendar like it's a Kandinsky painting… and the Procrastinating Professor Slayer who tells himself he'll fix it tomorrow—which, incidentally, is always today when it arrives. Pete, whose relationship with task management involves quad-wielding to-do apps like a productivity warlock, faces off with Tommy, who uses his iPhone calendar like a grocery list taped to a parking meter.Together, they dismantle performative productivity (spoiler: it's emotional self-gaslighting with better fonts), unpack procrastination as an anxiety-fueled death spiral in a trench coat, and lovingly roast each other's ritualistic self-sabotage. There's a chilling tale of Franz Ferdinand, a beeper, and the exact moment the world spiraled into World War I. And if that doesn't scream “calendar hygiene matters,” then friend, you might already be scheduling your next collapse. This episode has everything: analog clock superiority, digital tool delusion, ADHD-fueled shame spirals, the dopamine hit of “not today,” and possibly the best joke ever made about lawn maintenance. It's not just a podcast episode. It's a panic productivity intervention disguised as comedy. You're welcome. In the Fifteenth episode There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I sit down with legendary DJ, producer, and remixer Justin Strauss for a wide-ranging conversation about his remarkable journey through music and nightlife culture. We explore Justin's early music experiences—from seeing The Beatles live to attending iconic shows at Electric Circus. He shares stories from his time as the frontman of the glam-punk band Milk n' Cookies, and his transition into DJing, including his first gig and influential residency at the legendary Mudd Club.Justin also reflects on his pivotal roles as resident DJ at iconic 80's NYC venues like Area, and The Ritz. Additionally, our conversation explores the origins and evolution of his prolific remix and production career, which continues to inspire across generations.“Few DJs could adequately represent the last three decades of New York nightclub history - no less do so with such iconic credentials as Justin Strauss. Since he was 17, when his first band was signed to Island Records, Justin has had a career that reads like a Who's-Who of the music scene, spinning at nearly every dance club that you'd ever want to go to. Starting as DJ at New York's legendary Mudd Club, he spun his way through The Ritz, Limelight, Area, Tunnel, M.K., Life, Centro Fly and more, pioneering his own distinctive sound, and becoming one of the most sought-after remixers and producers not just in New York, but in the world. He has worked with the gamut of artists - Depeche Mode, Hot Chip, Sergio Mendez, Tina Turner, Jimmy Cliff, B-52s, Luther Vandross, 808 State, Malcolm McClaren, Skinny Puppy, Goldfrapp, LCD Soundsystem to name a few and on over 300 records! Much of the new dance crowd that goes to hear Justin DJ today, doesn't necessarily know his history; they simply love his spinning because he always keeps them dancing and surprised, seamlessly mixing between choice classics, delectable rarities and innovative beats. For Justin, no genre or style is off-limits – he can and will mix anything, so long as he can keep the crowd enthralled. His self-proclaimed mission is “connecting the dots” between what might otherwise seem disparate musical periods and styles, while introducing exciting new sounds. He does so with infectious passion, subverting preconceptions about what's old and new, and inspiring young DJs with his masterful skill and ever-youthful spirit. But Justin Strauss doesn't stop there. As half of the production duos, Whatever/Whatever and A/JUS/TED, he continued to produce and mix records, working on remixes for the likes of Hot Chip, William Onyeabor,LCD Soundsystem, Blood Orange, Holy Ghost!, Franz Ferdinand, Beyonce. Working on new projects Extra Credit with Joe Goddard of Hot Chip & Marcus Marr, and with Max Pask under their Each Other moniker, whose debut E.P.'s were mixed by Soulwax and released on their Deewee label, with new releases coming soon. Touring the world Dj'ing at Panorama Bar in Berlin, Robert Johnson in Frankfurt, Zunkunft in Zurich to name a few. In fact, he doesn't stop at all.”Support the show

“Would you rather have your nuts run over than listen to post-‘Toys in the Attic' Aerosmith?”Welcome to a riotous and unfiltered episode of The Ben and Skin Show on 97.1 The Eagle, where Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray dive headfirst into the ultimate rock ‘n' roll debate: Who's the greatest band for every letter of the alphabet?Fueled by Loudwire's “Rock and Roll Alphabet” list, this episode is a chaotic blend of music nerdery, generational hot takes, and laugh-out-loud moments that will have you yelling at your speakers—and maybe even questioning your own taste in music.
Well if that was the last Grand Prix at Imola for the forseeable future, it didn't leave us with a sour taste in the mouth and while it wasn't a classic race it was still better than some of the parades we've had round the circuit for the last 5 years since F1 made a return there in the patched together 2020 season. This week we take a look back at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the first of 2 Italian races this season and the start of the European races to boot. Could McLaren and in particular Oscar Piastri keep up their dominant form from the first quarter of the season, now we're not flying away as much, or with the appearance of a few upgrades (as is traditional at this time of year), would we see more than the papaya cars in the mix?The answer was both sort of yes and sort of no as Max Verstappen spoiled the papaya party this week by completely turning around a RedBull that he wasn't overly keen on up to Saturday afternoon to pull out his most Max-like performances of the season so far. After "that move" on turn 2, there was seemingly no stopping him from running away with it. Especially when McLaren decided to let their drivers race rather than try to strategise a win!Obviously we're as tangent heavy as always (for some reason that you'll hear) and we've ended up with Franz Ferdinand as our featured band of the week (when did this become a music pod?) And as a bonus, while he's not here this week, Dan has promised to be on more shows this year!If you want to join in with the chat during the races (along with practice and qualifying) head over to our Discord where there's always a great crowd of people to watch along with. And on the socials weve got our Facebook, Instagram, BlueSky & Twitter (or is it X) and Paul's attempts at Sim Racing on our Twitch channel. In this episode of Tuna on Toast, Stryker interviews Alex Kapranos, lead singer of Franz Ferdinand. The guys start out discussing fatherhood, since Alex's son recently turned one. They also remember Franz Ferdinand's first show in LA, which Stryker attended decades ago at the Troubadour. Alex then talks about Franz Ferdinand's new album ‘The Human Fear,' which will drop in 2025. Stryker has been playing the song “Audacious” on his radio show, and Alex reveals how it came together – along with an explanation why fear is a good thing. Alex didn't always feel like he could front a rock band, and he tells Stryker how a random karaoke performance became life-changing. Alex goes further into Franz Ferdinand's history, discussing his memories of the Grammys, the most terrifying gig he ever played, and how Franz Ferdinand found their indie rock sound at a time when most popular rock music was loud and heavy. Subscribe to Tuna on Toast, follow @TedStryker @tunaontoast on Instagram and thanks for checking out the show!
Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos and Julian Corrie talk about the writing of the band's sixth studio album The Human Fear and their creative process. During the conversation, the pair explore themes of fear and spontaneity in their work, not being too precious about ideas, and why songs are like friends.
