On episode 509 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Dr. Jessica Chung, the founder of the International Business Association for Nurses (IBAN). In the course of their conversation, Keith and Dr. Chung discuss the multitude of independent business opportunities available to nurse practitioners, nurses, and even physician assistants. According to Dr. Chung, the sky's the limit for what nurses and APRNs can accomplish in the entrepreneurial space as long as they have the education and awareness to tackle each step thoughtfully, and adhere to the legal and regulatory frameworks of their scope of practice and the state and municipality where they live and work. Dr. Jessica Chung, DNP, FNP-BC, is the founder of J.C. Healthcare & Associates and the International Business Association for Nurses. Dr. Chung is a Doctor of Nursing Practice with expertise in healthcare business start-ups and private practice management.  After receiving her Associate's Degree in Nursing from NYC College of Technology in 2009, Dr. Chung worked as a charge nurse and nurse case manager before moving to Florida. She earned her Master's Degree in Nursing with a Family Nurse Practitioner concentration from South University and her Doctoral degree in Nursing Practice from Samford University. Her research focused on patient education and medication adherence. Dr. Chung opened her private practice in 2019 and has been an advocate for mentoring healthcare professionals to become entrepreneurs. She is a dedicated educator, speaker, researcher, and provider with a passion for influencing others to pursue higher education and professional success. Reliability Matters

We're the best, we're number one, we're better than them, we've won more awards than our competitors, we've all seen those ads. While this form of advertising isn't unique, when's the last time it caused you to buy a product based on the ad. I think we all know that answer. There was a time when we relied heavily on print advertising to determine what products were available and from whom. The two primary methods to gain product awareness were print advertising and trade shows. While advertising and trade shows still exist, they are no longer the primary method of product awareness.31 years ago, beginning on April 30, 1993, all of that began to change. What happened on April 30, 1993? Public access to the Internet was born.Over the past 31 years, Internet technology propelled us into an age of self discovery. The older generation accuses the younger generation of always having their face in a screen. While that may be true, it's not always TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or Snapchat. People today, particularly younger people, research products, technologies, and a host of other things online. Consumers today are far more educated on the products they wish to purchase them at any time in history. In what I find to be an exceptional irony, much of the industry responsible for building the technology behind Internet connectivity continues to advertise their products in a pre-Internet style. You may ask, what does this have to do with reliability? Building reliable products requires a net sum of a vast amount of best practices. One of those practices is insuring the right products, procedures, specifications, designs, and so many other factors are implemented. This goal cannot be accomplished by just reading advertisements from sellers. Frequently, engineers struggle to solve problems without a complete knowledge of the root cause of the problem. Particularly today, with so many in-house subject matter experts retiring, advertisements boasting the number of customers, time and business, and where they place in the hierarchy of competitive products do not assist the engineer and understanding the root cause of a potential problem, and certainly not the solution.Over the past several years, several companies in our industry have begun to change their advertising strategies from transactional, to transformational. That is to say they help to connect problems to solutions, more than merely hyping products. My guest today fully understands the value and effectiveness of what I like to call “Conscious Marketing “. Rick Short is Corporate Associate Vice President for Indium Corporation. Rick has been with the company since 1984 in capacities including Technical Service Manager, Marketing Director, International Sales Director, head of Technical Support, and head of Environmental, Health & Safety, in addition to his current role. He has an MBA from Ren-Se-Lere Polytechnic Institute, a bachelor's degree in business management from Utica College, and an associate degree from Mohawk Valley Community College.I talk with Rick about his company's unique approach to education and how that has helped to transform their customer base.

You'll also gain access to relevant other resources, both free and paid, that can help you develop an application strategy for acceptance.  It gives me great pleasure to have for the first time on Admissions Straight Talk Danielle Richie, Director of Full-Time MBA Admissions and Student Recruitment at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. Danielle earned her Bachelor's in Public Relations at Oswego and her Master's in Communications at Syracuse University. She has worked in higher ed admissions and administration at Utica College, Syracuse University, Bentley University, and of course, UNC Kenan-Flagler, where she moved to in 2018 as Senior Associate Director for MBA Admissions and Recruiting. In November 2021, almost exactly a year ago, she became Director of Full-Time MBA Admissions and Recruiting.  Can you give an overview of UNC Kenan-Flagler's full-time MBA program, focusing on its more distinctive elements? [2:27] UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. We are a two-year MBA program at 62 credits. There are 15 core classes where candidates get the breadth of business. We have 12 concentrations that students can select from to gain more in-depth knowledge. These vary from business analytics to consulting, marketing, healthcare, real estate, and so on and so forth. You really get to create your own journey, if you will, with an MBA from Kenan-Flagler. We are STEM-designated, and it does not matter which concentration you pursue. You actually don't even have to, and about 20% of our students will just do a general MBA and they'll pick and choose from over 125 different electives to make up their program. We do require an internship between year one and year two. A lot of our students will do a "traditional internship" where they will apply and go on to work six to eight weeks in the summer with a company. What's new at Kenan-Flagler? [3:41] There are a lot of exciting things going on at Kenan-Flagler. We had our groundbreaking ceremony in September for a new building that will open up in 2024. We're very excited about that. We're not looking to expand the MBA program, but the building that we're in currently was opened in 1997. We do want to grow our undergrad business program by doubling it, so we are building that facility. Jamie Dimon from JP Morgan Chase came and was one of our guest speakers.  We also just launched our Charlotte MBA Executive Program, located in Charlotte, North Carolina. It's about two hours from Chapel Hill and is an executive format that working professionals can use to earn their MBA. That's in-person and is targeted to applicants from North Carolina as well as South Carolina because Charlotte is close to the South Carolina border. As Charlotte continues to grow, especially in the financial space, we saw that it was a great opportunity to offer the Charlotte MBA, as well as some executive development opportunities off campus. Can you highlight the modular system? [5:31] We call them mods and prospective students always ask, "What's a mod?" A mod is essentially seven to eight weeks of classes that you take. You're in Mod 1 when you start class. By October break, you'll be taking your final exams,

In addition to being a licensed registered Occupational Therapist, I am also a Certified Case Manager, Certified Dementia Practitioner, and Certified Aging in Place Specialist. Bringing 18 years of professional practice throughout the healthcare continuum, I understand the impact of habits, disability, and access on the prevention and management of chronic illnesses and self-care performance. Although I've worked across many different settings during my career, older adults have always been my favorite. I am, after all, a “Grandma's girl”, and often accompanied my grandmother and great aunt during weekly outings where they visited the “sick and shut-in” members of our church. It was undeniably one of the most influential experiences of my childhood that would lead me to occupational therapy. I also experienced a brief encounter with caregiver burnout as a teenager, while helping my mother care for a close family friend with multiple sclerosis. These early experiences greatly influenced my perspective as a service provider, and empathy for family caregivers. Once I experienced treating patients in their homes as a home health clinician, I realized that the home environment, when safe and appropriate, is the best place for our older adults. "The Neighborhood OT" was created to provide older adults and family caregivers in our community with the education, skills, interventions, and training needed to safely remain in their homes as they age, as safely as possible, for as long as possible.http://theneighborhoodot.comFor more information on TRUTH: NO CHASER, including booking information, updates, photos, videos and apparel please visit:https://www.thetruthnochaser.com/

On this episode, we talk with Dr. Tyler Kallasy, PT, DPT about everything from taboo training, the role of physical therapy in performance training, similarities and delineations between different types of sports performance professionals, knees-over-toes training, and how physical therapists are uniquely trained to help athletes achieve their goals. More about Tyler:Tyler Kallasy is a graduate of Utica College, where he received a B.S. in Health Sciences and then a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree. Currently, he is a traveling DPT, allowing him to adventure across the U.S., and practice in a variety of settings. Initially, Tyler planned to focus solely on outpatient orthopedic and athletic performance. His love for sports and recreation began as a young boy, and carried him through 4 years as a collegiate football player. During grad school, Tyler spent some time experimenting with various fitness modalities, and eventually landed himself in a CrossFit box, where his passion for improving human movement really began to thrive.  Tyler has been able to use his DPT degree in combination with his experience as a CrossFit L-1 Trainer and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist to help athletes of all ages, shapes and sizes progress toward a healthier, happier version of themselves. Along the way, Tyler has had a few experiences that have had a significant influence on his professional goals, and potential career path. While completing a 12-week clinical rotation at an intensive care unit for patients with a variety of neurologic conditions (TBI, SCI, stroke, CP) Tyler discovered his love for neurologic rehabilitation. Throughout graduate school, Tyler worked in Adaptive Sports and Recreation – building, facilitating and developing a variety of programs for folks who are blind or visually impaired. Since then, he has focused his efforts toward learning how to better incorporate his passion for the human nervous system, with his clinical knowledge of the musculoskeletal system, and professional experience in recreational and wellness adaptation. Tyler continues to advance his knowledge of manual medicine through courses including RockTape Functional Movement Techniques (Kinesiology Taping and IASTM Tools), Grey institute 3DMAPS Movement Analysis and Performance Systems. While he enjoyed practicing in the standard outpatient orthopedic setting, Tyler recognized how much he enjoyed working 1-on-1 with folks in the comfort of a private setting, such as their home, or their gym. While he continues to practice in a commercial outpatient orthopedic setting, Tyler also provides exceptional physical therapy services in a non-traditional way. This has allowed him to further improve his ability to really understand the patient and provide skilled evaluations and treatments with undivided attention and guidance. Tyler enjoys making up his own recipes, hiking mountains with his girlfriend and doggos, exploring restaurants in a new city and working out.Find Tyler on Instagram @tylerkallasy.dpt and on his website www.prospect-pt.com

Earlier, she developed and taught cyber security courses for M.S. and M.P.S. programs at Utica College. She has been Deputy Director of the Information Center on NATO in Georgia and Adviser to the Office of the Minister of Defense of Georgia. Her articles have appeared in Georgian and in English, including in Defense News, Jane's Defense Weekly, US News & World Report, Jane's Foreign Report, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and more.  She has presented topics on cyber threats at different venues inside and outside of the country: The Office of the Secretary of Defense, US Department of Defense, FBI Headquarters and field offices, Department of Justice, Defense Intelligence Agency, U.S. Healthcare Sector Coordinating Council, Mitre Corporation, Raytheon BBN Technologies, NATO and EU events. She has also been a speaker at TEDx, DefCon and RSA conferences and more. In this podcast, Dr. Khatuna Mshvidobadze traces the history of Russian information warfare doctrine, and its subset of cyber warfare, operating under an umbrella of “an integrated system of systems”. Through examples such as the Russia-Georgia conflict of 2008 and Ukraine critical infrastructure disruptions of 2015/2016 – she elaborates how the doctrine evolved, from its foundation days in the 1970s, rooted in the military writings of Nikolai Ogarkov, then Chief of the Soviet General Staff, to today. Laying out how the cyber troops units are structured under Russia's military and intelligence organizations, the GRU (Military Intelligence Directorate), Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), and Federal Security Service (FSB), she points out how they carried out the cyber intrusions, using such tactics as phishing and remote desktop protocols exploitations. Besides state sponsored cyber-attacks, she also notes the wave of ransomware attacks launched by Russian criminal groups such as REvil and Ryuk during the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr. Mshvidobadze highlighted how outsourcing is a key element in carrying out the attacks, where criminal groups work with Russian threat actor groups, and sometimes across national borders. One example is the information warfare campaigns prevalent during the current Russia-Ukraine conflict carried out by “GhostWriter”, which has alleged ties to Belarus, a Russian ally. Referencing the recent supply chain attacks such as the SolarWinds and Kaseya incidents by Russian groups, she advises cyber defenders to step up defensive measures on critical infrastructure, re-assess supply chains, and build threat intelligence into cybersecurity frameworks. Recorded with Jane Lo, Singapore Correspondent, Wednesday 27th April 2022 1pm (Italy)/ 7pm (Singapore)

On this episode we're joined by Genesis Tramaine, is an expressionist devotional painter who creates abstract portraits of men and women who transcend gender, race, and social structures. Genesis Tramaine's striking, near-abstract portraits of Black subjects take inspiration from biblical hymns and the scrawling figuration of 1980s New York graffiti art. The Brooklyn-born artist has exhibited at galleries in New York, Paris, Brussels, London, and Shanghai. In 2020, she was an artist in residence at the Rubell Museum in Miami.   Tramaine paints with a confrontational and provocative use of color and through an urban-inspired, mixed-media approach. The artist describes her practice as focused on the shape and definition of the American Black Face, explaining that her subject's exaggerated features capture the spirited emotions of the untapped, underrepresented soul of Black people through a mixture of acrylic and oil-based paintings.  Born in Brooklyn, NY, Tramaine earned her M.S from Pace University and B.S from Utica College of Syracuse University. Tramaine has exhibited nationally and internationally, including an inaugural solo exhibition with Almine Rech in London in February 2020, ‘Parables of Nana', as well as exhibitions at Richard Beavers Gallery, Brooklyn, NYC; The Tree House, Governors Island, NYC; The Salt Space, Chelsea, NYC; The Raging Spoon Gallery, Toronto, Canada; AOF Gallery, NYC; and more. Her work resides in prominent museum collections including the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), Miami and the Contemporary Art Foundation, Tokyo.

In institutional environments, there is a clear distinction between spaces that are ‘front of house' and spaces that are ‘back of house'. But as we move away from institutional approaches, this distinction starts to blur very quickly. Join Jennifer and Max as we talk to 3 great guests – Jude Rabig, Carrie Chiusano, and Damian Utton about their experiences educating leadership, frontline staff, family, and communities about how operation and design can make their communities feel more like home. She has 36 years of long-term care experience with Presbyterian SeniorCare Network, many of which were spent helping to shape and implement the Woodside Place philosophy of specialty care for persons living with Alzheimer's disease and other related dementias. Prior to being appointed Executive Director for the Presbyterian SeniorCare Network Dementia Care Center of Excellence in January 2016, Carrie served for five years as the Administrator for Woodside Place of Oakmont, which opened in 1991 and was one of the nation's first dementia-specific residential community specifically designed to meet the holistic needs of older adults living with Alzheimer's and related dementias. How do all the in-between spaces in our lives – not quite public, not quite private – impact our feeling of ownership, pride & community in the spaces we live, work and play?    Join Jennifer and Max as we talk to 5 great guests – Katie Swenson, Sean Kelly, Marvell Adams, Steve Bailey, and Jude Rabig – about the importance of these in-between spaces for older adults living with dementia. First, we speak with Katie Swenson, who is a nationally recognized design leader, researcher, writer, and educator. She is a Senior Principal of MASS Design Group, an international non-profit architecture firm whose mission is to research, build, and advocate for architecture that promotes justice and human dignity. Before joining MASS in early 2020, Swenson was vice president of Design & Sustainability at Enterprise Community Partners, where she led the Rose Fellowship program, recruiting and mentoring 85 fellows who are the next generation of leaders in architecture and community development. Previously, Katie served as a fellow with the Piedmont Housing Alliance in Charlottesville, VA and founded the Charlottesville Community Design Center. Next, we talk to three members of the leadership team of Kendal: Sean Kelly, Marvell Adams, and Steve Bailey. Sean Kelly, President & CEO, joined Kendal in 2008 and took on his current role in 2016. Prior to 2016, while at Kendal, Sean was responsible for fostering a culture of continuous improvement through leading and managing new opportunities for growth and evolution for Kendal. Sean came to Kendal after 10+ years working with development, finance, marketing and operations consultant to senior housing and service providers throughout the United States. Marvell Adams Jr., COO, served as Executive Director/CEO of Kendal's metro Washington, D.C.-area affiliate, Collington, for seven years, before being named The Kendal Corporation's Chief Operating Officer in October 2018. Marvell came to Collington from Rochester, New York, where he was COO/Administrator at The Highlands at Pittsford, a continuing care retirement community affiliated with the University of Rochester Medical Center. Steve Bailey, SVP of New Business and Development, joined Kendal's corporate staff in 2012 as Project Director and has directed major expansion and repositioning projects for several Kendal communities, including Kendal on Hudson and Kendal at Ithaca. He also has served as a key resource for planning and developing new Kendal communities, including development plans for Kendal at Sonoma in northern California in partnership with the San Francisco Zen Center. Steve's experience includes more than 30 years in real estate development and planning. Finally, we speak with Jude Rabig, a nationally recognized leader, speaker, and change agent who served as the first Executive Director of the National Green House Project. She assisted in shaping the model of care and leading the implementation of the first Green Houses in Tupelo, Mississippi. Through her company Rabig Consulting, she provides customized change consultations to help communities develop innovative strategies for change in long term care.  She has worked with scores of organizations nationally and in Canada to develop small house communities.  In addition to providing Small House consulting nationally, she also founded and leads Lifespace Senior Services based in Schenectady, NY to provide home and community based clients with support for their holistic well-being with an emphasis on thriving despite limitations or frailty. She has served in many roles including Director of the Office for Aging and Continuing Care in Oneida County New York and Professor of Gerontology at Utica College. In this episode we discuss an important operational trend in care environments: decentralized decision-making and resources. The goal of this approach to put decision-making as close to the resident as possible. But how does one go about doing that? What are the related opportunities and barriers? Our first interview is with Jude Rabig, a nationally recognized leader, speaker, and change agent who served as the first Executive Director of the National Green House Project. In each of these positions she has worked tirelessly, exhibiting a commitment to fighting ageism, and championing programs and practices that support autonomy, dignity and enhanced quality of life for older adults. She is a former Atlantic Philanthropies, Hartford Foundation Practice Change Fellow, and a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Innovation Adviser. She holds a PhD in gerontology and a business certificate from Stanford School of Business. Then, we speak with Carrie Chiusano. In her leadership of the dementia Center of Excellence, Carrie is responsible for the integration of dementia care services across the various settings that comprise the Network as well as the family caregivers coping with the disease. In addition to her service on numerous, industry association boards, Carrie has become a certified trainer for the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners in dementia care. Our last conversations is with Damian Utton, who has been with Pozzoni Architecture since 1997 and is now a Director, bringing his wealth of experience in design for older people to his co-ordination and leadership of research and development at the firm. In the late 2000's, he spent a sabbatical touring and researching more than 100 dementia environments around the world, and the findings became his book: ‘Designing Homes for People with Dementia'. He subsequently has authored and co-authored books on designing for older people and people with dementia and writes frequently for the care press.   Continue the conversation in our LinkedIn group Shaping Dementia Environments. Episode 032: Female Fridays with Lex LancasterTime for another #FemaleFridays chat! This week on the Female emPOWERED podcast, I spoke to Lex Lancaster, also known as Lex Brunelle OR Alexis Brunelle. Lex is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, owner of a website design company, and co-owner of a performance physical therapy practice in New England. You might say she's a “triple threat,” which is exactly what I called her in this episode! A digital superhero for health and wellness professionalsYou may find Lex online or get to know her under one of her aliases. As she explains on her website, Lex Lancaster is her superhero maiden name—it really is the perfect name for a comic book hero, right?—and Alexis Brunelle is her new name. But however you find Lex, her services and story are the same.A self-taught “computer geek” who loved learning about tech stuff, from using DSLR cameras to building websites, Lex never intended to turn her interests and skills into a business. However, she discovered that health and wellness professionals needed help launching basic websites seamlessly, without breaking their budget. While in physical therapy school, Lex originally launched her digital business in 2018 under her maiden name. Through her business, she was able to serve a niche that combined her education, passion, and experience. Rather than give up physical therapy for web design or vice versa, Lex decided to do it all. Her business has grown into what it is today, and she loves what she does and who she serves. Offering a variety of services in different industries fits her personality, too.  “Right now I'm a pediatric PT, an ortho PT, a virtual assistant, a website designer...I also teach at Utica College,” said Lex. “I dabble in a lot of things and I always have.” Lex and I talked about how she launched her business, common website mistakes and tips for good design, picking the best website platform for you, and much more. Tune in to the episode to hear it all!In this episode we discuss:[04:15] What it's like owning and operating a physical therapy practice with her husband[06:30] How Lex got into working as a virtual assistant while in grad school, and how her creative brain helps her treat clients better[10:45] Lex's interest in design and tech, and how it helped her fulfill a need through her business[13:30] The importance of having an online presence, plus common mistakes movements professionals make with their websites[19:00] Lex's tips for designing a website that meets customer needs without overwhelming the reader[26:15] The pros and cons of listing your prices on your website[32:00] Breaking down the benefits and drawbacks of popular website design platforms like Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, and Kajabi[39:45] Where you can find and contact Lex onlineFollow Lex on Instagram at @alexisbrunelle_ and on Twitter at @lexlancaster_!Looking for advice and resources to help you market and grow your clinic or client-based business? My guest today is Dr. Michael Sanchez. Michael is a criminal justice scholar with over 20 years of experience in the criminal justice system. He's been a detention officer, booking officer, patrol officer, patrol sergeant, administrative supervisor, training coordinator, firearms instructor, investigator, Lieutenant, Deputy Chief of Police, an international police officer with the UN in Kosovo, and regional commander for the UN police in Haiti. He has a masterpiece officer license in the state of Texas, a bachelor's degree in police science from Ottawa University, a master's degree in criminal justice administration from Utica College, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a specialization in criminal justice from North Central University. He's been teaching at Utica College since 2012 and he's also a full-time lecturer for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in the criminal justice department. So I can honestly say this was the most interesting conversation I've had about policing in my life. And this conversation took place many months ago when the death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests and riots were in the foreground of everyone's minds. So I was very excited to talk to someone who had both academic knowledge of policing and practical experience with it. Michael and I talk about the difference between policing in America and international policing, the steady stream of videos of unarmed Americans getting killed by cops including Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Rayshard Brooks. We talk about the mechanics of shooting and why cops tend to fire so many bullets, the difference between tasers and guns, how to hold bad cops accountable and so much more.#Ad - I'd like to say a special thank you to 1440 for supporting this week's episode.
