We talk about the Big Ten bubble and the potential for B1G Weekends in the Spring (2:20). The SEC, ACC, and Big-12 are full steam ahead trying to get a Fall 2020 college football season in (5:45). We went on vacation and got our bikes stolen, but then went full detective-mode miraculously recovered them (11:40). We look at a plot by @ScalpRNoles comparing Offensive Line Yards with Rushing EPA to see the impact of the O-Line on the run game (17:10). We cover the breaking news that the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences have decided to postpone the Fall 2020 College Football season to the spring, and talk about some of the implications with draft-eligible players. We also talk about our new Elo Ratings system, and how Drew applied it to rate Notre Dame's projected wins before and after joining the ACC for 2020. We also cover more news surrounding how college football teams are dealing with COVID.
It's now week 4 of the Quarantine Podcast and we're straying a bit from the stats today to cover some more lighthearted news. Namely, James Franklin has been accused of dumbbell theft (1:13), and Franklin fought back with accusations that a mystery man is dominating the community weight room at his condominium complex. This is probably the only time Franklin has asked someone to spend less time in the gym. Also, we talk about the possibility of playing College Football in the Spring (6:08) and what exactly that would look like after Penn State Athletic Director Sandy Barbour hinted at the option if COVID-19 isn't under control by the Fall.S3E4 - April 10th, 2020
We go through our most recent article on Staturdays.com - follow along as we go through each chart here: https://staturdays.com/2020/03/29/the-best-teams-in-college-football-at-getting-first-downs/. We come to the realization that teams should probably pass more on 2nd down (11:40), be more aggressive on 1st and 2nd downs, that LSU practically averaged a 1st down... on 1st down (22:28), and that Washington State probably passes too much (20:00). We also find out that Mike Leach is the new head coach of Mississippi State (that was hard to spell), which then forces us to realize that Ball Coach Joe Moorehead is the OC at Oregon now (that's a scary thought).S3E3 - April 1st, 2020
In our second episode of the quarantine, we're discussing a new article from FootballOutsiders that discusses what the optimal amount of passing the ball is, and breaks down the efficiencies of passing, rushing, and play-action passes. You can read it yourself here: https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2020/finding-optimal-passrun-ratio. It's a very quick read, has lots of graphs, and is easy to follow.
We are back for our 3rd season and kicking off the offseason with new episodes every week around different college football stats and analytics topics, including explaining some common college football stats, doing a college football mythbusters, and more. This week we're discussing a question of league parity: how many teams would you have to pick to be 50% confident that you have the winner of the National Championship in your group of teams? Wash your hands and STAY HOME.
S2E20 - Week 15 - It's the final game of the 2019 college football season. We recap the two College Football Playoff semifinal games, including a staggering blowout win by LSU over Oklahoma, and a down-to-the-wire instant classic between Clemson and Ohio State. Then, we go through the stats for the Clemson vs. LSU game and pick our winners (we've got a split-decision folks). Let's hope for another great one! Thanks for listening and sticking with us all season.
It is Bowl Season and College Football Playoff season, and we break out all the stats we can find for all these HUGE matchups of Top 25 teams that we've been waiting for. We start with the news of PSU hiring Minnesota's OC as their new Offensive Coordinator and the potential that move has, then we pick the 17 Memphis vs. 10 PSU (-7) game. After that, we get into the College Football Playoff semifinal matchups and bust out all the stats, including kicking (?) stats! There are a ton of great games and we pick them all including:4 Oklahoma vs. 1 LSU (-13.5)3 Clemson (-2) vs. 2 OSU18 Minnesota vs. 12 Auburn (-7.5)14 Michigan vs. 13 Alabama (-7)6 Oregon vs. 8 Wisconsin (-3)5 Georgia (-6.5) vs. 7 BaylorPLUS - the college football final potential matchups.
S2E18 - 2019 Heisman Special. We look at the stats for the Heisman Finalists - Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Justin Fields, and Chase Young - compare all 3 QBs side-by-side, and then make our predictions. We also give an overview of the Heisman voting process and the definition of the award winner and the qualities they are supposed to have. We also react to Penn State going to the Cotton Bowl, and the ranking of Wisconsin at #8 over PSU at #10 in the final CFP Rankings.
S2E17 - Week 15. It's finally here... Week 15: Conference Championship Week. We get into all the games, stats, and predictions for the Power 5 championship matchups. We also clean up some stuff we missed last week over Thanksgiving about the Penn State vs. Ohio State game, and do a quick recap of the Rutgers game as well. We look at the latest CFP Rankings and give our impressions, and talk about what that means for Penn State's chances at the bowl games.
25 - 2019 Week 13. Well the day has finally come. The big one. #8 Penn State vs. #2 Ohio State. College Gameday. We break down the key stats, try to gain some insight on the matchup, and make our picks. We've also got a bit of a beef with the College Football Playoff Committee, for very different reasons, which we'll get into. We unpack Week 12 including the historic comeback by Heisman darkhorse Jalen Hurts and Oklahoma in their late win against Baylor, break down the Penn State win over Indiana, as well as some other action from the weekend. Kyle gives an overview of success rate, and then gets into the pros and cons of the Penn State running backs by looking at their explosiveness, consistency, and reliability. Last, we make some more picks for Week 13 including:TCU vs. 9 Oklahoma (-19)13 Michigan (-10) vs. IndianaTexas A&M vs. 4 Georgia (-13.5)Texas vs. 14 Baylor (-5.5)
24 - 2019 Week 12. Penn State took its first loss of the season, but we try to stay positive and look at the road ahead: 2 ranked matchups in 2 weeks plus Penn State can control their route to the Big Ten Championship and the playoffs. We break down those scenarios, and get really into the stats from the PSU vs. Minnesota game, and debate some of the decisions, playcalling, and other situations throughout the game. We also talk about that crazy LSU vs. Alabama game and the implications it has on the playoff picture. We react to the latest CFP Rankings, and finally pick some of the Week 12 games including Indiana vs. Penn State, Georgia vs. Auburn, and Oklahoma vs. Baylor. And plug our new IG.
23. 2019 Wk 11. Penn State is ranked #4 ahead of Clemson and Georgia! We give our predictions for the CFP Committee rankings, then give our live reactions once we find out the true order. We get into the Penn State vs. Minnesota game, break down the offenses, defenses, and QBs, and make our picks. Then, Drew talks a bit about the best RBs in the Big Ten and some of the stats we can use to measure them. He also explains Line Yards, which is a cool metric used to give value to the offensive line separate from the running back. Finally, we get into our Week 11 picks including the biggest game of the week, 1 LSU vs. 2 Alabama. Thanks for tuning in and remember to follow @staturdays on Twitter and Facebook, and subscribe to us on Spotify and Apple.
NCAA College Football (might be) back, plus Penn State is 8-0, Wisconsin got little boy'd, Michigan did Penn State a favor by crushing Notre Dame, Oklahoma dropped the ball (or more literally just let Kansas State catch the ball), and that leads Drew and Kyle to an intense Heisman debate over the two frontrunners, Jalen Hurts and Joe Burrow. We also do some playoff predictions and talk about Big 10 Championship scenarios. Finally, we discuss if Minnesota is legit, and make a Week 10 pick for the Georgia vs. Florida game.
PSU holds off against Michigan in the White Out but struggles managing the clock, Tua is out and his Heisman hopes are getting bleak, Penn State is one of two teams to have two ranked wins, and could play FIVE ranked teams by the end of the season, Franklin is a confirmed tailgater, we give our thoughts on the Penn State Football HBO special, debate whether we'd be satisfied with a Rose Bowl bid this season, and pick a bunch of Top 25 matchups in Week 9 including Wisconsin vs. Ohio State, Notre Dame vs. Michigan, Auburn vs. LSU, and of course Penn State vs. Michigan State.
On a packed HOUR-LONG Whiteout Game preview, we open up with our stat of the week (1:15) about Penn State's 3rd and Long tendencies, then we recap the Iowa game (4:47), discuss some of the (can we even call these controversial?) calls by the refs, how Noah Cain is getting many fans to argue for him to be RB1 and whether a committee is still the right choice (11:47), talk about Georgia's loss to South Carolina and whether they listened to the analytics (25:30). Then we're talking about the QB situation (36:45), week 8 and Penn State vs. Michigan (41:30), and answer some of your burning questions about the Whiteout game (45:00).
It is Week 7 of the College Football season already, making this the official midpoint of the year. Penn State has a big night game coming up this week at Iowa, so we make some predictions and talk about last week's performance in the run game against Purdue, and Iowa's struggle against Michigan.
