In this college football podcast episode, we briefly step out of preview mode for a college football news reset. While we were working through the ACC and Big 12, the rest of the sport kept moving, beginning with another strange development at North Carolina. We discuss Mike Lombardi’s reported leave of absence, what it adds to the growing collection of Bill Belichick-era drama in Chapel Hill, and why Tar Heels fans did not exactly greet the news with despair. Then we dig through the most memorable moments from SEC, ACC and Big 12 Media Days. Lane Kiffin contemplates mortality, Jon Sumrall brings an unmistakable level of intensity to Florida, Pat Narduzzi makes another bold conference comparison, and several SEC coaches begin building the case for nine-win College Football Playoff teams. We also consider Greg Sankey’s acknowledgment that conversations about an SEC and Big Ten breakaway are real, even if nobody is quite ready to explain where those conversations might lead. Finally, with fall camps opening around the country, we look at the quarterback competitions worth tracking. What could a freshman starter mean for Tennessee? Is Alabama’s apparent favorite ready to take control? Which uncertain situations at Arkansas, Iowa and elsewhere could reshape an entire season? We also ask how many of these competitions are truly open and how many are exercises in keeping quarterbacks engaged during the transfer portal era. The conversation begins with Pat Narduzzi's eleven-year tenure and the consistency he has brought to Pittsburgh, including an ACC Championship and a reputation for fielding some of the nation's toughest defenses. The guys examine Pitt's elite run defense, linebacker play, and the challenges the Panthers face generating pressure on opposing quarterbacks. On offense, the discussion centers around quarterback Mason Heintschel and his impressive freshman campaign. Ronnie, D-Block, and JD analyze whether Heintschel can take the next step in 2026, despite concerns about an offensive line that surrendered 44 sacks last season. The crew also evaluates Pitt's rushing attack, receiver room, and overall offensive ceiling heading into the season. The conversation expands into a broader discussion about modern college football, including NIL, transfer portal rules, roster building, player development, and whether college football should move toward multi-year player contracts. The hosts debate how today's environment compares to their own playing careers and what changes could improve the sport. The crew then makes game-by-game predictions for Pitt's 2026 schedule, debating whether the Panthers will finish above or below their projected win total. Finally, the show wraps up with a discussion about the recent gambling controversy involving Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby, the challenges facing young athletes in today's environment, and how professional sports continue to handle gambling-related issues. Former Pirates pitcher & broadcaster Steve Blass joined the show. Steve had a pair of the most legendary moments of any pitcher in Pirates history and told a little story about his dad when the team won the World Series in 1971. Steve admitted that he is always optimistic about the Pirates, but he is certainly feeling that about this year's club. He said he can't wait until the home opener next Friday and the special feel of the first baseball game of the season. Steve talked about the time he faced off against Tom Seaver and the Mets to open the season – he threw 10 innings and Seaver tossed 9 in a 1-0 Mets win in 43-degree weather. Steve has so much excitement for the young studs on this Pirates team – including Konnor Griffin, who isn't on the big-league club yet. Steve said, as a former pitcher, watching Paul Skenes is special every single time. Steve talked about the charity events he has taken part in that help the city he shined as a sports star and why he gets so much joy out of helping the community in any way he can. Pat McAfee Show CFO Phil Mains joined the show. Chris asked Phil if he has the toughest job of anyone associated with Pat McAfee, since he's the guy that balances the books every month. Phil is the center of the team that has been so generous to the community with his pals from Plum Borough. He joked about not being a guy that speaks for a living, but getting to help the city he loves at the same time. Phil said it's all about taking care of your people and your neighbors who may be in greater need than you. With some Pittsburgh sports questions, Phil said he's excited for a new era of Steelers football led by Mike McCarthy after nearly 2 decades under Mike Tomlin. Phil is still optimistic that the Penguins will still make the playoffs. What will Konnor Griffin look like when he comes up? Phil thinks it's hard to not be excited about the Pirates lineup and a pitching staff led by Paul Skenes. Did Phil have any tips for Donny driving to-and-from Indianapolis for Friday's show. An impromptu Name Game with Phil that resulted in 3600 meals being donated to the Greater PGH Community Foodbank. Pitt head football coach Pat Narduzzi joined the show. Pat talked about Kyle Louis, who is getting set for the NFL Draft after a successful career at Pitt. Chris asked Pat about the second year of Mason Heintschel on-deck and how excited he is to see his young QB develop more in Pittsburgh. Pat shared his stories of giving back to the foodbank each and every year, and the importance of preaching to his players about giving back to the community in any way they can. He said teaching the youth how to give back, not only financially, but with their time and effort, it can create a successful domino effect as the years go on. Pat reflected on the interactions with Mike Tomlin, who he shared a facility with for over a decade on the South Side.

Post-Gazette Pitt insiders Stephen Thompson and Abby Schnable identify five key questions coach Pat Narduzzi will have to answer during the Panthers' spring football practices. This show is presented by FanDuel. After breaking onto the scene as an unknown freshman, how will QB Mason Heintschel evolve mentally and physically in his second year under center? Who of Malik Knight, Blue Hicks, C.J. Lee, Bryce Yates or Tony Kinsler will step up to fill the wide receiver roles left behind by Kenny Johnson and Poppi Williams? How does a reloaded secondary shake out? Who of Raion Strader, Kanye Thompson or Shadarian Harrison ends up starting opposite Shawn Lee Jr. at corner? Are transfers Alex Sanford, DeMarco Ward, plus returners Cam Lindsey, Jeremiah Marcelin, enough to cover for losses of Rasheem Biles and Kyle Louis? And which freshmen could come out of nowhere to surprise us? Our duo tackles those topics and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Post-Gazette Pitt insiders Stephen Thompson and Abby Schnable break down the Panthers' linebacker room headed into the 2026 season. This show is presented by FanDuel. How can coach Pat Narduzzi replace star linebackers like Kyle Louis, who moved on to the NFL Draft, and Rasheem Biles, who transferred to Texas? Does new LBs coach Joe Bowen have the hardest job of any of the position coaches? Can Braylan Lovelace step up in their absence and fill that role? How will Jeremiah Marcelin's development after a season-ending injury play into it? And what are reasonable expectations for Lovelace? Can he eventually be an All-ACC player like his predecessors? Our duo tackles those topics and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Post-Gazette Pitt insiders Stephen Thompson and Abby Schnable react to the latest transfer portal news surrounding Pat Narduzzi's program. This show is presented by FanDuel. Pitt found a backup quarterback in Holden Geriner from Texas State and a backup kicker in Antonio Chadha from Western Illinois. What will each player bring to their respective position group? With much of the transfer portal class here, what will the position battles look like once spring ball rolls around? What positions does Pat Narduzzi still need to shore up before the start of the season? Why should wide receiver, safety, offensive line and defensive end be areas of priority? And what are Stephen and Abby's picks for Monday night's national championship game between Indiana and Miami? Our duo tackles those topics and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
