“The one thing I reminded myself of and something my coach has been telling me all year is this: Don't feel like you have to be anybody else. What you've been doing has been working for you. Continue to do that. If you've been being Melissa all year and you've been winning all year, what else do you need to do? Just go out there and be yourself.”My guest for today's episode is Melissa Jefferson-Wooden — the 25-year-old from Georgetown, South Carolina who just pulled off one of the rarest feats in track and field: the golden sprint triple crown. At the World Championships in Tokyo, Melissa won the 100, the 200, and was part of the Team USA team that took gold in the 4x100m relay — becoming the first American woman ever, and only the second woman in history after Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, to sweep the sprints at a single Worlds. Her winning times — 10.61 in the 100m and 21.68 in the 200m — weren't just dominant; they cemented her as the fourth-fastest woman of all time and within striking distance of Flo-Jo's world record. But what makes Melissa's story so special isn't just the speed. It's also the journey. If you've followed some of her career leading into 2025, she calls herself a self-described ‘village kid' who had two partial college offers. She saved her dad's life at 17 years old with a bone marrow transplant. She built herself from an NCAA champion out of Coastal Carolina to a global superstar, who can boast the title of the fastest woman on earth. In this episode, we talk about that rise, the lessons that come with greatness all throughout 2025 from her races in April through September, and how she's thinking about being one of the faces of the sport.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Melissa Jefferson-Wooden | @__melissaj19 on Instagram Produced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on Instagram____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSHOKA: We're takin' over Happy Camper Chicago (Old Town) with HOKA during the Chicago Marathon festivities. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.splitzoneduo.comOne quarter of the way through the season, Godfrey, Richard, and Alex discuss five teams that are off to terrible starts and haven't fired their coaches yet. They all look doomed to at least a bad season and maybe more than that, but can we find reasons for hope? In this episode: * How Billy Napier's staff management at Florida has made him an easy target for criticism as DJ Lagway has gone backward in his second year * Oklahoma State has fallen behind not just the blue-bloods of the sport, but most of the Big 12. Mike Gundy no longer looks like the guy to fix it* Wisconsin built its roster expecting that it could still act like the Wisconsin of the 2010s, putting a moneyball QB into a good support system. But the Badgers might not be able to operate that way anymore. * Northwestern is going in the wrong direction under David Braun. That doesn't look like his fault, but he also probably isn't the man to fix it. (Also, Pat Fitzgerald is probably getting back into coaching soon. Just saying.) * Liberty has so much more money than its peers but has now lost six of its last 10 games going back to last October. Maybe Jamey Chadwell's trick at Coastal Carolina wasn't as portable as once thought. After going through each of this situations, we wonder: Which of these programs has the best chance to get back on an upward path soon? South Carolina's universities are under fire as accusations swirl that Clemson employees celebrated the assassination of Charlie Kirk and even suggested future political murders. Attorney General Alan Wilson says the First Amendment doesn't protect incitement to violence — yet Clemson's leadership resists full accountability. Former Freedom Caucus Chairman Adam Morgan joins the show to expose what he calls a taxpayer-funded effort to normalize “pro-murder” rhetoric on campuses. From calls to defund Clemson and Coastal Carolina to warnings about precedent-setting free speech battles, this episode dives into the clash between higher education, politics, and public safety. Is this about protecting academic freedom — or protecting radicalism? And what should parents, donors, and lawmakers do next? Tune in for a raw, unfiltered conversation on the stakes for South Carolina and beyond.
Trigger warning: discussion of assassination, threats, and political violence. Former South Carolina Freedom Caucus Chairman Adam Morgan joins the show to sound the alarm over professors and state employees accused of celebrating the murder of Charlie Kirk — and, in some cases, suggesting more killings should follow. Morgan calls out Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Winthrop, and other schools for protecting employees he says are inciting violence with taxpayer dollars. From demands to defund universities that won't fire staff, to warnings about cultural indoctrination in classrooms, Morgan lays out a fiery case for accountability. He blasts South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster's silence, contrasts it with strong responses from leaders in Florida and Texas, and calls for a special session to strip funding from colleges that refuse to act. This episode pulls no punches on higher education, political hypocrisy, and the fight to stop the normalization of violence in South Carolina classrooms.
Trigger warning: discussion of threats, assassination, and political violence. In this episode the host responds to a wave of alarming rhetoric — from alleged media distortions used to justify violence, to campus faculty accused of celebrating political murder. Featuring JD Vance's blunt remarks, the episode examines how powerful institutions, funded outlets, and viral social posts can radicalize anger into real-world threats. You'll hear concrete examples (including an alleged Coastal Carolina employee's violent tweets), critiques of elite funders and publications, and a raw call for accountability from university leaders. Expect an urgent, opinion-driven breakdown of: how propaganda can dehumanize political opponents, why “unity” isn't possible with those who celebrate violence, the stakes for public institutions in red states like South Carolina, and practical steps the host urges listeners to take — from polite civic pressure to demanding firings and defunding when necessary. For listeners seeking a no-nonsense, high-energy take on the intersection of media, campus culture, and political violence.

Faith, Power Hitting & Pro Softball Dreams is at the heart of this inspiring conversation with Coastal Carolina standout, Delaney Keith. Hosted by Coach Aaron alongside Gameface Gracie, this episode dives into Delaney's journey from Idaho to becoming one of the most feared power hitters in D1 softball. Her story highlights faith, hard work, and the perseverance needed to chase pro softball dreams. From Idaho Roots to Coastal Carolina Power Delaney grew up surrounded by the game, with both parents coaching and instilling in her the love of softball. Her journey took her from Oregon to Idaho, and ultimately to Coastal Carolina, where she has developed into a powerful force at the plate. As the Gatorade Idaho Player of the Year, she batted nearly .600 with 13 home runs in her senior season, striking out only four times. That drive for excellence continues as she now shines in the teal and black. The Mindset Behind Power Hitting Success When asked about handling struggles, Delaney shared, “You have to train mental toughness… as long as you have the right support system around you, it's easier to get through the bad days.” Her approach to adversity emphasizes faith, patience, and the ability to invest in small daily habits that add up to big results. Her story is a reminder to young athletes that challenges are part of the journey, but resilience and preparation make the difference. Chasing Professional and Olympic Softball Dreams Delaney's goals go far beyond college. She dreams of playing professionally and representing Team USA on the Olympic stage. With softball gaining momentum through leagues like the Athletes Unlimited Softball League and Olympic re-entry, the future is bright for dedicated athletes like her. Her leadership and relentless pursuit of growth make her a role model for the next generation of softball stars. Lessons for Young Athletes in D1 Softball In this episode, Delaney encourages youth players to embrace new positions, love the grind, and focus on the fundamentals. Coastal Carolina's rise in both baseball and softball reflects how smaller programs can make a big impact nationally. For more stories about rising stars, check out our episode on Softball, Superpowers, and Big Banana Ball Dreams. Walkout Song Delaney's walkout song is “Play Something Country” by Brooks and Dunn — a fitting anthem for a player who blends grit, confidence, and Southern flair into every at-bat. Send us a textWhen Gary Gilmore arrived at Coastal Carolina, they had won just 17 games the previous season. Nobody—except perhaps Gilmore himself—believed this program could ever reach college baseball's pinnacle. Yet through a remarkable development-focused philosophy, unwavering faith, and a culture built on love, Gilmore guided the Chanticleers to one of the greatest underdog stories in sports history. The 2016 College World Series champions weren't built on blue-chip recruits or lavish facilities. Coastal thrived by taking overlooked athletes, redshirting them to build their skills, and molding them into complete baseball players. "We had to take guys that simply nobody ever heard of," Gilmore reveals, explaining how he prioritized athleticism over polish in recruiting. This development approach, coupled with the program's "selfless and relentless" mantra, created a team greater than the sum of its parts. What makes this championship story even more extraordinary are the specific predictions Gilmore shared with his team before the final series. In an emotional team meeting, he outlined exactly how they would win—which pitchers would throw how many innings and the precise situations they would face. His players watched in amazement as these predictions unfolded exactly as described. "Coach, you told us what was going to happen before it happened. How did you do that?" they would later ask him.Behind this magical run was Gilmore's transformation as a leader. After nearly leaving coaching early in his career due to frustration, he discovered his true purpose through faith and relationships. "The most important thing God put me on this earth for was to develop relationships," he shares. This revelation led him to create a culture where love became the team's greatest strength—where players constantly picked each other up after failures and supported one another unconditionally.Whether you're a coach seeking to build a championship program or simply love underdog stories, Gilmore's journey offers powerful lessons about development, culture, and the extraordinary things that happen when a team truly believes.Support the show Follow: Twitter | Instagram @Athlete1Podcast Website - https://www.athlete1.net Sponsor: The Netting Professionals https://www.nettingpros.com
