On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") and intern India Otto are back in studio for the very first game preview show of a year, taking a look at the Missouri State Bears. The Trojans have been chomping at the bit to get back out on the field this off-season and they will finally have their chance Saturday at 4:30pm PT against MSU, with the game being shown on the Big Ten Network. Coached by Ryan Beard, Missouri State is transitioning from FCS to FBS, leaving the Missouri Valley Conference for Conference USA, and the Trojans will be the Bears very first opponent as an FBS program. USC is the only FBS program to have never played an FCS foe, but this game will be as close to playing one as it gets. This is the podcast version of our Tunnel Vision video show. Unlike last season, the Trojans get to start the season with a lower profile game, giving this offense an opportunity to figure things out on the offensive line before the meat of the Big Ten schedule. Missouri State moved up from the FCS level, leaving the Missouri Valley Conference for Conference USA and will play its first game as an FBS program against the Trojans. It's officially Week 1! Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back behind the microphones for another edition of the Helium Boys Podcast to break down USC's Week 1 opponent: Missouri State, which will be making its debut at the FBS level.  The show kicks off with the patented 'Two-Minute Drill' with Trevino commenting on Lincoln Riley's comments on Trojans Live about the starting lineup along the offensive line. Shotgun talks about his excitement for the start of the season, and his hurried travel plans this past weekend in Georgia.  The Helium Boys then take their first official preview of the 2025 season with Missouri State. Missouri State wasn't a world beater at the FCS level with just four playoff appearances since 1989 and a 30-26 record since 2020. The Bears are projected to be among the bottom of Conference USA with a win projection between 5.4-6.7 per ESPN's Football Power Index.  It's been an emotional offseason for the Bears program after the death of senior safety Todric McGee in spring from an accidental gunshot wound. McGee was projected to be a starter in the secondary, leaving a huge loss in the defense and program.  TIMESTAMPS 01:55 - Helium Boys Podcast: Welcome & Introductions 06:29 - Two-Minute Drill: OL Confirmation & Shotgun's Airport Dash 18:11 - Analyzing Missouri State's FBS Jump & Top Players 28:24 - USC vs Missouri State: Key Storylines, Matchups, Players 36:05 - How USC Wins... Which FBS Teams Will Lose FCS Games? Let's Draft.

This season, FBS teams will play 126 games against FCS opponents. Most years, anywhere between five-ish and 10-ish FBS teams will lose those games. The purpose of the Split Zone Duo FCS Upset Draft is to identify those teams, engage in some friendly competition, and use the process as a look ahead to the season. Everyone picks three FCS winners, but there's a catch: Some FCS upsets are barely upsets at all, and they may only be worth three points. Others could be worth 100. Folks, it's time for some game theory.Former FCS Upset Draft champion Jason Kirk (Shutdown Fullcast, The Athletic) returns to the program to compete against Alex, Richard, and all of you.Enter the FCS Upset Draft by visiting www.splitzoneduo.com and locating the entry form. Here are the rules. Read carefully!* A nonpartisan committee made of up one member (me, Alex Kirshner) puts every FCS-versus-FBS game of the season into a spreadsheet.* Each game gets a point value of 3, 5, 10, or 100, with higher point values awarded to games where an FCS team is a bigger underdog.* This year, you may pick FOUR games, up from the usual three. The form will let you enter more, but only entries with four picks or fewer will count. (Why the change? There are 10 more FBS-vs.-FCS games this year than last, so we figured we'd broaden our game a bit.)* You can pick non-upset "upsets" in which great FCS teams beat bad FBS teams, but you'll likely only get three or five points if it pans out.* Or you can take some bigger swings for 10- and 100-point values and go for the fences. Getting a 10-pointer right has long been an ingredient for victory.* At the end of the season, the top three points-scorers will be celebrated on an episode of SZD. Most of all, you're fighting for eternal glory here. But we'll also have some special gifts (to be announced!) from our team, with tiebreakers to determine three champions as needed.* You must enter your picks by noon ET on Saturday. However if you pick a game being played on Thursday or Friday, you need to enter your pick before that game kicks off. Here's a catalog of previous FCS-on-FBS wins, in case it gives you any inspiration. This year, as usual, features well north of 100 games to choose from. We'll track the results throughout the season, though you might want to write down your own answers for memory, as we do not keep a public leaderboard for the whole world to see. Will Saturday be another story of the "farm kids" from South Dakota being underestimated by a bunch of thoroughbred athletes from California? The Dan Jackson Era and Chase Mason era at South Dakota State opens with a likely sold-out home game against Sacramento State, a 3-9 team from last year with over 50 FBS transfers and a brand new coach that is rated No. 15 in the preseason polls. With so many new starters on each side, it is tough to accurately predict how the game may unfold, but Sioux Falls Live sports editor and decade-long SDSU reporter Matt Zimmer takes a stab with Happy Hour host John Gaskins in a 74-minute chat over cocktails at Gateway Lounge. But Zim pulls from over 20 years of covering South Dakota college football teams who lock horns with talented rosters from talent-rich states like California, while also unveiling some new Jackrabbits FBS transfers you should expect to see and maybe shine on Saturday and all season long. What exactly can we expect, especially from SDSU's new starting quarterback, Chase Mason, who has undeniably supreme physical talent but has not played a full game as a starting signal caller in six years, back to his junior year in high school?Meanwhile, No. 4 South Dakota opens 2025 at FBS No. 22 Iowa State, who impressively finished a 24-21 prize fight win over No. 17 Kansas State in Ireland on Saturday. How much of a factor will jet lag from a trip to Ireland factor in USD's favor, not to mention this being a "sandwich" game for the Cyclones between rivals KSU and Iowa (next week)? What kind of upset threat can USD mount, with its own litany of transfer replacements but also with a guiding light in senior quarterback in Aidan Bouman, a former Cyclone with plenty to prove against his former team and NFL scouts?Plus, a glimpse into the "Washington State Jackrabbits," led by former SDSU coach Jimmy Rogers, who brought his staff and 16 players with him to the Palouse. The Cougars, who play Idaho on national television late Saturday, have shut down practices to the media after reported inner-team practice scuffles.Speaking of former Jacks, quarterback Mark Gronowski is Iowa's "Million Dollar Man" (or $2 Million Man, depending on who you believe). What should we expect of the former Walter Payton Award winner in the stacked Big Ten, and in what way will life be more different and difficult for him compared to the FCS?Then, there's No. 8 Alabama, led by former USF coach Kalen DeBoer, who starts his second season on the road at Florida State. Why should there be reason for the Crimson Tide to improve after their first four-loss season in 17 years? Finally, how much more secure should the Minnesota Vikings feel about their QB2 situation now that they dumped Sam Howell and made room for North Dakota State legend Carson Wentz, who joins his sixth NFL team in six years?

Griffin Warner and Lonte Smith dive into CFB Week 0. Week Zero of the college football season always feels like a strange appetizer, a slate that is light on the number of games but heavy on storylines, betting intrigue, and fan chatter. This year the action opens overseas with Iowa State and Kansas State meeting in Dublin for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. It is a neutral-site matchup, a clash of Big 12 rivals being played far from home in a stadium more accustomed to soccer than Saturday gridiron. Iowa State has enjoyed recent dominance in the series, winning four of the last five, but Kansas State enters as a three-point favorite with a stronger defensive front and the potential breakout of quarterback Avery Johnson in a tempo-driven system. Rocco Beck threw for 3,500 yards last season but lost his two best targets to the NFL, and Matt Campbell's team feels due for regression after an 11-3 campaign. Some see value on Kansas State to cover, while others eye the under at fifty given the travel, the surface, and the potential for sloppy execution early. Later in the afternoon Kansas christens its new stadium with a visit from Fresno State, a matchup that has already seen line movement from fourteen down to twelve and a half. The Jayhawks return quarterback Jalen Daniels, whose health has long been a question, and welcome new defensive coordinator D.K. McDonald. Kansas finished strong last year and will have the benefit of a true home environment after a season of displacement. Fresno State is rebuilding under Matt Entz, the North Dakota State coach with a sterling FCS record now testing himself at the FBS level. With new coordinators, a new quarterback in EJ Warner, and the loss of most of last year's offensive stars, the Bulldogs face a tall order. Many bettors trust Kansas to handle business at home, though the total has dropped with expectations of more ball control on both sides. Sam Houston State and Western Kentucky offer a different style of entertainment, with points expected in bunches. The Bearkats bring in Phil Longo to reshape their offense, but it may take more than an offseason to get the scheme working with the current roster. Western Kentucky has become synonymous with explosive passing attacks, and even with a new offensive coordinator the Hilltoppers appear loaded for another high-flying year. Maverick McIver arrives with his play-caller from Abilene Christian, and the line has climbed from seven and a half to double digits. The sharper angle might be Western Kentucky in the first half, laying six and a half before late backdoor scenarios creep in. The finale is the traditional late-night Hawaii game, this time with Stanford crossing the Pacific under interim coach Frank Reich. The Cardinal are in disarray, with Andrew Luck now functioning in a front office role, an entirely new staff, and very little proven talent outside a few safeties. Hawaii, meanwhile, brings back thirteen starters, excitement around quarterback Micah Alejandro after his 500-yard debut, and an upgraded receiving corps that even includes a Stanford transfer. The line has flipped from Stanford favored to Hawaii by two, with bettors trusting the Warriors' continuity and island home field. With Stanford unsettled and Hawaii motivated, many expect the Rainbow Warriors to control the matchup. Week Zero is quirky, often sharp with numbers that have been posted for months, but it provides the first chance to analyze real action and measure offseason narratives. Kansas State versus Iowa State in Dublin sets the tone, Kansas and Fresno showcase new beginnings in Lawrence, Western Kentucky promises fireworks against Sam Houston, and Hawaii gets its chance to shine against a fallen Stanford. Best bets circle around Kansas State laying three and the under in that opener, but as always the debate will rage across forums and living rooms as fans celebrate the return of college football and the long march toward a new season of Saturdays. Begins with Army (West Point) win total: Over 7.5 at +110, Under 7.5 at -140 on BetOnline. 2:35 – 4:41 Lonte Smith — Army Analysis 2023 Recap: 12–2, AAC champions, led by QB Bryson Daly (dark horse Heisman) and RB Kanye Udo. Losses: Daly to graduation, Udo to Arizona State, two Joe Moore Award-winning offensive tackles, best defensive player to Georgia. Returning Talent: Six of top ten tacklers; LB corps Miller & Thomas praised. Concerns: Offensive drop-off, new OL coach, challenging schedule (Tulane, UTSA, Navy, Air Force). Projection: 7–5 ceiling, 6–6 floor → leans Under 7.5. 4:41 – 6:08 Griffin Warner & Lonte Smith — Schedule Talk Army's 2024 slate includes K-State, North Texas, Tulane, Air Force, Navy (in Baltimore). Lonte favors Navy among service academies, citing better returning production and depth. 7:16 – 14:52 Western Kentucky (C-USA) Odds: Over 7.5 (-125), Under 7.5 (-105). 2023: 8–6 record. Roster: Only 3 starters return (1 offense, 2 defense). Poor 2023 rush defense (224 YPG). Key Additions: QB Maverick McIver (Abilene Christian, 3,500+ yds, 37 TDs), OC Rick Bowie (former Abilene OC). WR Matt Henry (1,100+ yds at Western Illinois). Concerns: OL continuity, defensive holes, rush defense. Schedule: Winnable home games; road tests at Toledo, Delaware, Missouri State. Projection: ~8.6 wins → leans Over 7.5. 15:43 – 20:22 Bowling Green (MAC) Odds: Over 6.5 (+200), Under 6.5 (-260). 2023: 7–6 (6–2 MAC). Changes: New HC Eddie George; ranked 130th in returning production; offense loses top TE hero Fanning (drafted by Browns). Defense: Loses 13 of top 15 tacklers but adds FCS standouts (including Eddie George's son). Schedule: Lafayette, Cincinnati, Liberty, Louisville early; Toledo and Buffalo at home. Projection: Depth concerns, brutal early stretch → Under (expects ~4–8). 20:53 – 25:10 Air Force (MWC) Odds: Over/Under 6.5 (-115). 2023: 5–7 after starting 1–7, finished on 4-game win streak. Roster: 9 returning starters (6 offense, 3 defense). QB battle (Johnson favored). OL returns 3 starters plus 2 with experience. Defense: Allowed 23 PPG; DL led by Peyton Zurch. Schedule: Bucknell, Boise, Navy, Wyoming, Army, UNLV, SJSU, UConn. Projection: Manageable slate, strong finish expected → Over 6.5 (7–8 wins). 25:38 – 31:06 Georgia Southern (Sun Belt) Odds: Over 7.5 (+130), Under (-160). 2023: 8–5. Roster: 10 starters return (5 offense, 5 defense). QB J.C. French (2,500+ yds, 17 TDs, 11 INTs, 66% comp). Deep WR corps; strong OL with most combined starts in Sun Belt. Defense: Needs rush D improvement; strong secondary led by Chance Gamble. Schedule: Fresno, USC, Jacksonville State, JMU, Coastal, ODU, Marshall. Projection: Favors in most conference games except JMU → Over 7.5 (floor 8 wins). 31:07 – 38:35 Playoff/Long-shot Discussion No strong playoff contenders from teams covered; JMU strong but blocked by JMU matchup for Georgia Southern. Boise State (2–1 to make playoffs) downgraded without RB Ashton Jeanty. Long-shot pick: South Florida (33–1) if QB Byron Brown stays healthy; avoid betting until after tough Miami/Florida stretch. 38:36 – End Best Bet: Army Under 7.5 wins. Rationale: Loss of QB, RB, two elite tackles, new OL coach, tough schedule, regression from 12–2 2023 season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Devy Devotional Podcast Episode Notes: Next Man UpDate: August 13, 2025Hosts: John Arrington, Andy StarrNote: Aaron Wilcox was absent for this episode.IntroductionJohn Arrington hosts alongside Andy Starr, filling in for the absent Aaron Wilcox. The episode focuses on recent injuries in college football, particularly during fall camps, and discusses the "next man up" for key teams, exploring potential replacements and their impact on team dynamics and fantasy football (Devy and CFF).Key Topics and Discussions1. General Injury OverviewThe hosts discuss the impact of injuries across college football, noting that while some are minor, others could have significant long-term effects. The focus is on identifying players who could step up in the absence of injured starters, especially at running back and wide receiver positions.2. Notre Dame: Keidren Young's Season-Ending InjuryInjury: Keidren Young (RB, Notre Dame) suffered a season-ending ACL tear.Impact: Young was expected to have a role as a spell back for Jeremiah Love, particularly on early downs. His injury disrupts his development and role for 2025.Next Man Up: Aneas Williams is highlighted as a potential beneficiary, likely stepping into a larger role in the running back room. The hosts note Notre Dame's limited depth at RB, with only Jeremiah Love, Jadarian Price, and Aneas Williams listed alongside Young on the depth chart (per Our Lads).Future Outlook: Young's injury could push him to re-earn his role in 2026, especially with Love and Price potentially leaving. Concerns arise about Notre Dame recruiting over Young or adding walk-ons to bolster depth.Devy Notes: Williams is seen as an electric back with more explosiveness than Young, offering a promising 1-2 punch for 2026 if Young recovers fully. However, the hosts express caution about running back injuries in general, citing examples like Jonathan Brooks and CJ Baxter.3. Iowa: Kamari Moulton's Hamstring InjuryInjury: Kamari Moulton (RB, Iowa) is sidelined with a hamstring injury, missing practice in the week leading up to the episode.Impact: Moulton was expected to lead Iowa's backfield after Caleb Johnson's surprising 2024 season. A prolonged absence could severely hamper Iowa's already weak offense.Next Man Up: The depth chart behind Moulton is thin, with Jayzeon Patterson, Terrell Washington, Xavier Williams, and Brevin Doll listed. None have shown significant promise, with low big-time run rates and PPR points per touch.Discussion: The hosts express concern about Iowa's running game without Moulton, noting the team's historical reliance on defense and tight ends rather than offensive firepower. They discuss the addition of FCS transfer quarterback Mark Grunowski, who could add a rushing element, but doubt Iowa will shift to a spread offense under coach Kirk Ferentz.Devy Notes: Moulton's 7% big-time run rate offers some optimism if he returns healthy, but the hosts are pessimistic about Iowa's offense without him, predicting a potential struggle to reach 200 rushing yards as a team.4. Florida: Wide Receiver InjuriesInjuries:Eugene Wilson III (WR) has been limited in spring and fall practices due to an undisclosed injury.Dallas Wilson (WR, true freshman) is in a hard cast for a lower leg injury, expected to miss at least a week or two.Impact: Florida's wide receiver room is depleted, raising concerns about offensive production, especially with a tough 2025 schedule.Next Man Up:J. Michael Sturdivant (WR, transfer from Cal): Expected to fill a role similar to Kahleil Dike but has regressed since a 755-yard sophomore season at Cal (2022). His 315 yards in 2024 at UCLA raise doubts about his ability to exceed 300-500 yards in the SEC.Vernell Brown III (WR, true freshman): A five-star recruit with inconsistent camp reports but high athletic potential. He could seize a starting role if Wilson and Wilson are sidelined.Tank Hawkins (WR, true sophomore): Showed promise with a 4.6 average depth of target (A-dot) on limited routes (46) in 2024. Could step up as a possession receiver.Other Names: Aiden Mizell and Khalil Jackson are mentioned but deemed unexciting due to limited production (Jackson had 13 yards in 2024).Discussion: The hosts speculate on lineup adjustments, suggesting Eugene Wilson could move to the X-receiver role with Brown in the slot if injuries persist. They emphasize the need for quarterback DJ Lagway to elevate the offense, noting his shoulder and calf injuries as concerns. Florida's tough schedule and coach Billy Napier's job security add urgency to getting top players like Brown on the field.Devy Notes: Brown is the most exciting prospect for Devy purposes, with potential to break out if given opportunities. Sturdivant and Hawkins are less appealing, with Sturdivant's decline making him a risky bet.5. LSU: Wide Receiver InjuriesInjuries:Nick Anderson (WR, transfer from Oklahoma) is recovering from a quadriceps injury, possibly related to a car accident and concussion protocol.Aaron Anderson (WR) has been sidelined during fall camp, with limited details on the injury.Impact: LSU's deep wide receiver room mitigates the impact, but the injuries could open doors for younger players.Next Man Up:Barion Brown (WR): A former Kentucky standout with a strong freshman year, Brown has earned all-SEC preseason honors and praise in camp. He's listed as a backup flanker but could see significant snaps.Zavion Thomas (WR): Also receiving camp buzz but hasn't stood out significantly as a receiver.Chris Hilton Jr. (WR): The presumed starter at X-receiver, Hilton has big-play potential (2.5+ yards per route run in three seasons) but only 225 yards in 2024. His role is questioned due to competition from younger talent.Kylan Billiot (WR, true sophomore): A highly-touted recruit listed as third-string behind Nick Anderson. Could see snaps if injuries persist.Teron Francis (WR, true freshman): Nicknamed “Man Child,” Francis has generated hype for his athleticism and camp performance, potentially pushing for a role.Discussion: The hosts debate whether veterans like Hilton and Aaron Anderson can hold off younger talents like Billiot and Francis. LSU's passing game, led by quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, is expected to remain strong despite injuries due to the team's depth.Devy Notes: Brown and Francis are the most intriguing for Devy leagues, with Brown offering immediate production potential and Francis as a long-term upside pick. Hilton's big-play ability is noted but tempered by his limited production.6. Oklahoma: Running Back InjuriesInjuries:Taylor Tatum (RB) and Jayden Ott (RB) are dealing with minor injuries, expected to return by Week 1.Xavier Robinson (RB) is also injured, leaving only Javontae Barnes and true freshman Torrey Blaylock as healthy backs in camp.Impact: Oklahoma's running back room is described as “disgusting” due to its lack of proven talent and injury concerns.Next Man Up:Torrey Blaylock (RB, true freshman): Has impressed in camp with his speed and explosiveness, potentially earning a role in specific packages.Javontae Barnes (RB): Healthy as of recent reports but hampered by a 2023 foot injury (dead bone removed near his big toe). His 577 yards in 2024 were underwhelming (4.7 YPC).Jayden Ott (RB): A former standout at Cal, Ott struggled in 2024 but could rebound if healthy.Taylor Tatum (RB): A highly-touted recruit with better per-carry metrics than Barnes but limited by inexperience and injury.Discussion: The hosts highlight Blaylock's potential to see the field due to his explosiveness, despite being low on the depth chart. Concerns linger about Barnes' recovery from his foot injury and Ott's ability to return to form. The addition of quarterback John Mateer and new offensive coordinator could shift focus to the passing game.Devy Notes: Blaylock is a sleeper pick for Devy leagues due to his camp buzz and the weak depth chart. Tatum remains a high-upside prospect, while Ott and Barnes are less appealing due to recent struggles.Additional NotesAaron Wilcox's Absence: The hosts humorously note Aaron's absence, joking about his fear of the “Guess the Guy” segment, which was skipped for the second consecutive week.College Football Excitement: With the season two weeks away, the hosts are excited about upcoming games, noting a stronger-than-usual Week 0 and Week 1 schedule.Technical Issues: Andy experienced internet connectivity issues during the podcast, briefly dropping out. John's daughter inadvertently turned off his house lights via voice-controlled devices, adding a humorous moment.Key Devy TakeawaysHigh-Upside Prospects to Watch: Vernell Brown III (Florida), Torrey Blaylock (Oklahoma), Barion Brown (LSU), and Teron Francis (LSU) are highlighted as potential breakout players if injuries create opportunities.Injury Concerns: Keidren Young (Notre Dame), Kamari Moulton (Iowa), Eugene Wilson III (Florida), Dallas Wilson (Florida), Nick Anderson (LSU), and DJ Lagway (Florida) face varying degrees of injury risk, impacting their Devy value.Depth Chart Analysis: Teams like LSU and Florida have deeper talent pools to weather injuries, while Iowa and Oklahoma face significant challenges if their injured players miss extended time.ClosingThe hosts thank listeners for their support on Gridiron Ratings' YouTube channel and Spotify, encouraging engagement through comments and subscriptions. They promise to return with Aaron Wilcox for the next episode, as college football season approaches.Runtime: ~1 hourListen on: Gridiron Ratings YouTube, SpotifyNext Episode: TBD, with hopes of Aaron Wilcox's return and live football discussions.

Richard and Alex preview the Mountain West in 2025, starting with the same team that's favored every year and then going in no particular order: * Boise State still looks like the class of the league * San Jose State has leveled up, but now Ken Niumatalolo confronts life without an All-American receiver* UNLV is the apple of Richard's eye with Dan Mullen in charge * Colorado State made strides last year, but were they real, or were they just the result of a lousy schedule? Does it matter? * Fresno State wipes the slate clean, but we're optimistic * Hawaii looks a lot better than we both thought they would * Air Force should get back to business the way it used to be done * San Diego State was shockingly bad on offense in Sean Lewis' first year. How much does that change our feeling on them? * Utah State made a great hire, but it'll take some time * Wyoming is still searching for an identity * New Mexico is a blank canvas, and a new coach from FCS is trying something different* Nevada is a hard job that continues to be hard The episode wraps with preseason award nominees from the hosts for the SZD Dude of the Year, the Low-Key Cool Game of the Year, the Minority Coach of the Week In an Interesting Schematic Spot (of the Year), and the Coach Who's Not Gonna Be Here Next Year.
