This week we try to untangle the complex topic of femininity: What does it mean to each of us? How does it relate to gender? Is it more about personality traits or physical appearance? The layers get deeper when Adam throws in some thoughts from a male perspective. All of that, combined with the fact that “femininity” is actually a pretty hard word to say, leads to a pretty interesting conversation. What does femininity mean to you? As we continue our Listening series this week, we talk with Aida Cubano, a Hispanic artist, digital marketing professional, wife, and mother who has some fascinating stories! Aida tells us about her experiences dealing with feeling “in-between” due to implications that she is “too feminine” to identify as gay and “not Hispanic enough” to be truly Puerto Rican. She shares the ways she’s navigated these tricky spaces, including what it was like to come out, her bumpy path of having children as part of a same-sex couple, and her reactions to the current worldwide protests.  Check out Aida’s art and work at her website, www.aidinstudios.com, as well as her Facebook page, Art Attack Movement, which she created as “a place to heal anxiety through art.”  Now is the time to listen and learn. Welcome to the first of our series of listening and learning, where we take a step back from our own stories and instead chat with guests who are all people of color. We’ve got some great conversations coming up, with folks from all walks of life who share with us some of their experiences and insights. Our first guest in the series is Melissa Robinson-Brown, Ph.D, who helps us navigate the challenges of raising kids to be aware of and understand issues of race, including the recent violence, unrest and protests. Dr. Mel helps us with ways to introduce diversity into our kids’ lives and consciousness, from switching up the books they read to expanding our own social circles, and demonstrates different approaches to addressing racism with children of all ages. We learned so much from her, and we hope you do too! Email: womenafpodcast@gmail.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/womenafpodcast/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/womenafpodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/womenafpodcast About our guest: Melissa Robinson-Brown, Ph.D (aka Dr. Mel). This week we talk about something that’s, unfortunately, affecting a lot of people right now — layoffs. All of us have experienced a layoff (at least once) and one of us very recently. Listen as we discuss what we’ve learned from going through a layoff, how we’ve coped with it, and how we think an employer can make it as humane as possible.  Have you been through a layoff? Recently or in the past? We are looking for ideas on what to do after the layoff — if you have any tips, ideas for job hunting, coping with job loss, or how to find your next gig, please share with us.
