Have you ever wondered if your small act of obedience is really making a difference? In today's episode, Meredith Brock and Kaley Olson sit down with author and pastor Jennie Lusko to talk about the moment her “yes” became deeply personal. When Jennie and her family traveled to Bolivia to meet three children they sponsor through Compassion International, what they experienced was far more than meaningful — it changed the way they see faith, generosity, and the people God has placed right in front of them.Through honest storytelling and spiritual insight, Jennie shares how stepping outside her everyday rhythm opened her eyes to what God had been doing all along. If you've ever questioned whether your obedience matters — this conversation will remind you that it does. You'll learn:Why it's easy to lose sight of the impact of your everyday obedience. How meeting her sponsored children reshaped Jennie's understanding of generosity. What children living in poverty taught her family about contentment and joy.How God uses simple acts of faith to create lasting, eternal impact. Why stepping outside your comfort zone can open your eyes to what God is doing.Resources From This Episode:Sponsor a child through Compassion International. When you sponsor a child, you help provide access to education, medical care, nutritious food, clean water, and the hope of Jesus — all delivered through a local church in their community.Get Jennie Lusko's devotional Fresh Mercies Every Day.This 40-day devotional offers encouragement to help you build breathing room for your soul and experience God's fresh mercies in your everyday life.Download a copy of the transcript for this episode.Want More on This Topic? Listen to “Am I Really Called to THIS?” with Nicki Koziarz.

For this Out Takes, we had a bumper crop of reviews and interviews as we took a look at some of the best queer films and television on offer this winter in Melbourne and via streaming too. First up was the St Kilda Film Festival, Australia’s largest and longest-running short film festival which is back on from June 4 – 14. One of the highlights in the program each year is the Pride Without Prejudice LGBTQIA+ showcase on Saturday June 13 at the Victorian Pride Centre which features a stellar lineup including laugh-out-loud comedy, moving romance, fearless sexuality and deeply personal documentary. We reviewed a selection of films on offer and also caught up again with AP Pobjoy who joined us in March to discuss their fantastic series ‘Homebodies’ and was back on Out Takes to discuss their beautiful and engaging film ‘Billie and Jesse’ which is on at this year’s St Kilda Film Festival. We then moved onto our review of ‘The Four Seasons’ whose second season is streaming now on Netflix and promises more from the long-term relationships in a group of middle-aged friends that takes them to fresh locations while continuing to explore the highs, lows, and humour of enduring friendships, and love. We finished up the program by looking at the fantastic new initiative from FOMO Cinemas that that brings a great selection of queer films chosen by queer staff for queer audiences to Melbourne’s northside. Cleverly titled ‘Queer All Year’, these monthly screenings kick off June 5 and run on the first Friday of each month and our special guest Kaley from the FOMO team gave us the lowdown on the program and more. Legendary trial attorney Mark Lanier joins Nicki and Sarah for an emotional, behind-the-scenes look at the landmark social media addiction trial that ended in a jury verdict against Meta and YouTube. For nearly two months, we sat inside the Los Angeles courtroom documenting every moment — filling 589 pages of notes as grieving parents, advocates, reporters, jurors, and teams of attorneys battled over one central question: did these platforms knowingly build products that addict children, like Kaley? In this deeply personal interview, Mark breaks down exactly how the case was won, why Snapchat and TikTok settled just before trial, and what the jury ultimately decided about Kaley, the young woman at the center of the case. He also reveals shocking moments the public never saw — defense witnesses backing out, chaos inside the courthouse, the strategy behind avoiding a billion-dollar “runaway verdict,” and the cross-examinations that changed everything. The episode also revisits some of the most unforgettable lines from the trial, responding directly to claims made in court by executives and attorneys from Meta and YouTube. But this conversation is bigger than one verdict. It's about children, addiction, grief, corporate power, and the parents fighting back against trillion-dollar tech companies. Mark shares what he believes this case means for the future of Big Tech accountability, why he calls it a defining trial of the 21st century, and the message he hopes families around the world take away from Kaley's story. The episode closes with a powerful discussion about parenting, love, and why human connection may be the strongest defense families have against platforms designed to exploit vulnerability. If you followed this trial in real time — or if you're just beginning to understand what these platforms are doing to children — this is an episode you won't forget. Here's a link to the actual verdict forms that the jury completed.Video Editing expertly provided by Jacob Meade.

In March, Meta and Google were found by a Los Angeles jury to have deliberately designed their platforms to be addictive in a way that was demonstrably harmful to a 20-year-old woman known as Kaley.TikTok and Snap were also previously defendants in the case before agreeing to a settlement ahead of trial. Meta and Google intend to appeal the decision. The news occurred as political leaders around the world, including here in the UK, have implemented or are considering implementing a ban on social media access for those under the age of 16.It also came after Meta lost a separate trial that found the tech giant misled consumers about the safety of its platforms and enabled harm, including child sexual exploitation. Meta has further come under scrutiny for admitting to earning billions in revenue from fraudulent ads. This confluence of events has led to a slow-motion reckoning for the advertising industry, which is responsible for providing ever-growing revenue to these Big Tech companies even as they are found by juries to be intentionally addicting users, leading to real world harms.Amid the public furore and continued legal backlash, how should business leaders in media and advertising react?Jess Butcher is the founder of ScrollAware, a not-for-profit aiming to convene business leaders to raise awareness of, and solutions to, online harms.Butcher, a former tech entrepreneur, sits down with host Jack Benjamin to consider the business community's response to the social media addiction trial verdict.Highlights: 9:27: The online safety debate: The harms of “ultraprocessed content” versus concerns of moral panic22:35: ScrollAware's mission as a “convenor of conversation” about responsibility in the attention economy.28:44: Why brand managers feel “powerless” in challenging tech platforms – and why they shouldn't37:00: The collective action problem in the long tail41:17: Policy changes to be consideredRelated articles:‘Are we monetising addiction?' Kevin Szczepanski examines the landmark Kaley G. M. trial, in which a Los Angeles jury awarded $6 million against Google and Meta for harms allegedly caused by YouTube and Instagram use during Kaley's childhood. This episode explains how the jurors were persuaded to focus not on user generated content but on allegedly addictive platform design features, such as algorithms, engagement loops, and filters. The verdict's broader significance lies in its implications for thousands of similar pending cases, increased settlement pressure on platforms, and a shifting legal and public focus on social media product design rather than simply content.

It's Thursday, April 2nd, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nepalese Hindus dragged 3 Christians to police station for evangelism Three Christians in Nepal, the country north of India, are facing persecution for simply sharing the Gospel last week. A group of Hindus dragged the Christians to a police station in response to their evangelism. It is illegal to convert someone to another religion in the country. And Hindus increasingly target Christians who share their faith.  One local believer told International Christian Concern, “In spite of the absence of any substantiated evidence, the police ordered an investigation. These actions make life difficult for these poor Christians.” Presidential elections in Peru, Colombia, and Brazil Millions of Latin Americans will vote in presidential elections this year in countries like Peru, Colombia, and Brazil.  A survey from Pew Research found most adults in these countries see a role for religion in key aspects of public life. Protestants are a growing minority in Latin America. They express the strongest support for Christianity's influence on their country's leadership. Even a sizable minority of the religiously unaffiliated in the region said the Bible should influence their country's laws.  Wisdom says in Proverbs 8:15, “By me, kings reign, and rulers decree justice.” Supreme Court: Christian therapists allowed to help “homosexual” kids On Tuesday, the United States Supreme Court struck down Colorado's ban on so-called “conversion therapy” The court ruled 8-1 that the ban violated the First Amendment rights of Christian therapist Kaley Chiles. Colorado passed the Minor Conversion Therapy Law in 2019. The measure prohibited therapists from using faith-based counseling to help kids who no longer want to identify with sexually perverted lifestyles.  Listen to comments from Kaley in an interview with Fox News. CHILES: “I am elated by the ruling, and I am very excited for the kids and their families, who have been simply seeking options in counseling, and now will get to do so. “I also hope this ruling emboldens counselors because we will either do justice to our clients or we will let the government silence us into pretending that there is medical consensus on this issue.” Kansas prohibits cities from forcing pro-life centers to promote abortion The state of Kansas enacted a law to protect pro-life pregnancy centers last Friday.  The Pregnancy Center Autonomy and Rights of Expression Act forbids state and local governments from forcing pregnancy centers to promote or participate in abortions.   While Democrat Governor Laura Kelly initially vetoed the measure, the state's legislature thankfully voted to override the veto -- within hours.  To their credit, the Republican-controlled House voted 87-35 and the Republican-controlled Senate voted 30-9 to override the pro-abortion governor. More Americans struggling economically A new survey from Gallup found that 49% of U.S. workers report they are struggling in their lives compared to 46% who report they are thriving.  Between 2009 and 2019, nearly 60% of Americans said they were thriving. Most U.S. workers say it is a bad time to find a quality job. This was especially true for workers with a college degree or above.  A majority of workers also said they were actively looking for a new job. This was especially true of younger generations.  Barna: 40% of Protestant pastors see higher engagement from Gen Z A new survey from the Barna Group found that younger generations are becoming more engaged with their church. The study asked over 500 Protestant senior pastors about church engagement over the last year. Over 40 percent of pastors reported higher engagement from Generation Z who are 14 to 29, and Millennials, who are 30 to 45.  A similar number reported higher engagement from young men.  The study noted, “The story of the next generation and the church is still unfolding. But according to pastors across the country, signs of new engagement are beginning to appear.” Samuel Morse, Christian inventor of Morse Code, died on this date And finally, today is the anniversary of the death of Samuel Morse.  Does that last name ring a bell? The American inventor died on April 2, 1872. Before becoming an inventor, Morse was known as a painter, even gaining admittance to the British Royal Academy of Arts.  Later in life, he would make key contributions to the design and deployment of the telegraph system. He also co-developed the code that bears his name. Morse code would become the primary language for telegraphy and is still used to this day.  Notably, Morse was a devout Christian who gave glory to God for his inventions. Psalm 115:1 says, “Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your name give glory, for the sake of Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness!”  Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, April 2nd, in the year of our Lord 2026. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.  Plus, you can get the Generations app through Google Play or The App Store. Story of the Week (DR):Meta and YouTube Found Negligent in Landmark Social Media Addiction Case: A jury found the companies harmed a young user with design features that were addictive and led to her mental health distress. DRHistoric Financial PenaltiesNew Mexico: A jury ordered Meta to pay $375M in civil penalties ($5,000 per violation) for misleading the public about child safety.Los Angeles: In the first social media addiction trial of its kind, the jury awarded $6M in total damages (compensatory and punitive) to a single 20-year-old plaintiff, with Meta ordered to pay 70% and YouTube 30%.Section 230 "Immunity" is CrackingThese trials successfully sidestepped Section 230 by focusing on product design (like infinite scroll and autoplay) rather than the content itself. The juries ruled that the "addictive" nature of the apps was a design defect, not a speech issue.Direct Liability for "Addictive" FeaturesFor the first time, a jury found that features like infinite scrolling, notifications, and video autoplay were intentionally designed to "hook" young users. In the Los Angeles "KGM" trial, the jury found both Meta and YouTube negligent for creating products that they knew would harm children's mental health while failing to provide adequate warnings to parents.Evidence of "Profits Over Safety"The trials featured internal documents and depositions from Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram head Adam Mosseri. The evidence convinced jurors that executives were warned by their own employees about risks to children—including sexual exploitation and mental health "problematic use"—but chose to prioritize engagement and profits over implementing safety guardrails.A "Big Tobacco" Moment for TechLegal experts are comparing these verdicts to the 1990s lawsuits against the tobacco industry. Because the California trial was a "bellwether" (a test case), the win for the plaintiff opens the floodgates for thousands of similar pending lawsuits from families and school districts. It signals that social media companies can now be sued for the health consequences of their platforms, just like cigarette manufacturers.Elon Sux 2:Elon Musk loses big in court; X boycott perfectly legal: X admonished for “fishing expedition” as judge dismisses ad boycott lawsuit.Elon Musk Found Liable By Jury For Misleading Twitter Investors In $44 Billion Deal, Faces Potential $2.5 Billion DamagesElon Musk's Grok ordered to stop creating AI nudes by Dutch court as legal pressure mountsOn March 25, 2026, President Trump officially appointed the first 13 members to his President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). In exchange, the company has pledged to stop developing any new offshore wind in the U.S. entirely.Paying for Investments Already in ProgressCritics call the deal a "boondoggle" because the $1 billion "refund" is earmarked for natural gas and oil projects—specifically the Rio Grande LNG plant in Texas—that TotalEnergies was already heavily invested in. The article argues the government is essentially handing over taxpayer money for business moves the company was making anyway.A Tactical Pivot After Court LossesAfter the administration's previous attempts to block offshore wind were repeatedly struck down by federal judges, they've switched strategies. Instead of using executive orders that get tied up in court, they are now using "settlements" and "refunds" as a backdoor way to dismantle the renewable energy industry.Economic Irony During a Global Fuel CrisisThe payout comes at a time when global energy prices are spiking due to the war in the Middle East, highlighting the irony of spending $1B to kill domestic, zero-carbon wind power—which would provide long-term price stability—in favor of volatile fossil fuel markets. The "America First" ParadoxDespite the "America First" rhetoric, the administration is transferring a massive sum of U.S. taxpayer money to a foreign (French) corporation. Legal experts and advocates suggest this sets a "dangerous precedent," essentially signaling to other energy companies that they can get paid by the government not to build the green infrastructure they already bought leases for.Major outgoing CEOs are citing AI as a factor in their decisions to step downCoca-Cola CEO James Quincey (61) and former Walmart CEO Doug McMillon (59) have told CNBC that the next wave of artificial intelligence is a reason for their departures. Both CEOs said they believed their companies needed someone with new energy and understanding of AI to helm the companies' futures.Who is next?Apple/Tim Cook (63): long tenure; Apple needs rapid AI product pivots; investor impatience could risePepsi/Ramon Laguarta (60): consumer packaged goods facing AI-driven marketing/supply chain changeMcDonald's/Chris Kempczinski (55): operations + AI in ordering, automationAir Canada CEO [Michael Rousseau] Apologizes For Lack of French Language Skills But Refuses to Resign Over ‘Insulting' Crash Video MessageSunday night: an Air Canada plane collided with a fire truck while landing at LGA: the pilot and copilot were killed and both fire officers were injuredMany possible reasons for crash: but worth noting that: Only two controllers were working in the tower overnight, combining multiple roles including ground and local control. This Day in Legal History: The AmistadOn March 9, 1841, the U.S. Supreme Court decided United States v. The Amistad, ruling that a group of Africans who had seized control of the Spanish ship La Amistad were free individuals who had been illegally enslaved. The case began after the captives, led by Sengbe Pieh—often called Cinqué—revolted against the ship's crew while being transported from Cuba in 1839. They had originally been kidnapped in West Africa and sold into slavery in violation of international agreements banning the transatlantic slave trade. After the revolt, the ship was intercepted near Long Island and the Africans were taken into U.S. custody. Spanish officials demanded that the United States return both the ship and the captives to Cuba. The U.S. government supported Spain's request, arguing that the captives were property under Spanish law.Abolitionists rallied to the Africans' defense and secured legal representation for them in American courts. The case eventually reached the Supreme Court, where former President John Quincy Adams joined the legal team arguing for the captives' freedom. Adams delivered a lengthy and passionate argument emphasizing natural rights and the illegality of the slave trade that had brought the Africans to Cuba. Writing for the majority, Justice Joseph Story concluded that the captives had been unlawfully enslaved and were therefore not property. Because they were free individuals, the Court held that they had the legal right to resist their captivity and fight for their liberty. The Court ordered that the Africans be released rather than returned to Spanish authorities. The ruling was celebrated by abolitionists as an important moral and legal victory in the fight against slavery. Although it did not end slavery in the United States, the decision demonstrated that courts could recognize limits on the slave trade and acknowledge the legal claims of enslaved people.Thirteen major U.S. book publishers have filed a copyright lawsuit against Anna's Archive, a website they describe as one of the largest “shadow libraries” distributing pirated books and academic papers. The publishers—including HarperCollins, Wiley, McGraw Hill, and Cengage—filed the complaint in federal court in New York, alleging that the site hosts more than 63 million books and 95 million research papers without authorization. According to the lawsuit, Anna's Archive allows users to download these materials directly or through torrent networks, making copyrighted works widely available for free. The publishers claim the site openly presents itself as a pirate platform and intentionally violates copyright law.The complaint also alleges that Anna's Archive was created in 2022 after copying entire collections from other illegal book repositories and has continued expanding its database. The publishers say the site operates anonymously and frequently changes domain names across different countries to avoid enforcement efforts. They further claim the platform targets artificial intelligence developers by offering large datasets of books and papers. While free users can access files slowly, the complaint states that faster downloads are available to users who make donations through untraceable methods like cryptocurrency or gift cards. The publishers allege that these donations can reach roughly $200,000 for high-speed bulk access. In response, the plaintiffs are asking the court to shut down the site and award statutory damages of up to $150,000 for each infringed work. The lawsuit follows a separate case brought by Atlantic Recording Corp., which earlier obtained a preliminary injunction preventing Anna's Archive from distributing millions of music files allegedly copied from Spotify. That case resulted in a default after the site failed to respond to the complaint. However, the publishers argue that the earlier injunction does not cover books, allowing the alleged book piracy to continue. The Association of American Publishers has publicly supported the lawsuit, describing the scale of digital piracy as extremely large and urging legal action to stop the operation.Publishers Sue ‘Shadow Library' For ‘Staggering' Book Piracy - Law360Companies that operate in California are facing uncertainty as the state moves forward with major climate disclosure laws while a federal appeals court considers whether the rules should be blocked. The laws—California Senate Bills 253 and 261—require large companies doing business in the state to disclose information about greenhouse gas emissions and climate-related financial risks. In late February, the California Air Resources Board approved initial regulations explaining how the reporting system will be administered and how companies will pay implementation fees. At the same time, the Ninth Circuit has temporarily blocked enforcement of S.B. 261 and is reviewing a request from business groups to halt both laws entirely.Because of this parallel regulatory and legal process, many companies are unsure whether they should invest heavily in compliance or wait for the courts to rule. S.B. 253 applies to companies with more than $1 billion in annual revenue and requires reporting of Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, which include direct emissions, energy-related emissions, and emissions from supply chains. S.B. 261 applies to companies with more than $500 million in revenue and requires disclosure of climate-related financial risks and mitigation strategies. Attorneys say collecting this data could be difficult, especially for companies that only have limited operations in California or that must gather information from suppliers and partners in other regions. The reporting requirements could also affect businesses outside California because companies subject to the law may need emissions data from their partners and vendors. Regulators have begun setting deadlines for initial reporting, including an August deadline for certain emissions data, but many details about how the system will function remain unresolved. Meanwhile, business groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce argue the laws violate the First Amendment by forcing companies to speak on controversial issues related to climate change. With rulemaking still underway and litigation ongoing, companies are left trying to prepare for possible compliance while waiting to see whether the courts ultimately uphold or invalidate the laws.Companies In Limbo Over Calif. Climate Disclosure Laws' Fate - Law360In a major California bellwether trial over claims that social media harms children's mental health, the plaintiff has finished presenting her case against Instagram and YouTube. The plaintiff, a 20-year-old referred to as Kaley G.M. to protect her identity, alleges that features on the platforms contributed to anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia she experienced as a minor. Her attorney, Mark Lanier, chose not to call Kaley's mother to testify live, instead presenting a brief portion of her deposition to the jury. The decision appeared partly influenced by strict time limits imposed by the judge during the trial. In the deposition testimony, the mother acknowledged she had little knowledge of her daughter's social media use and did not monitor her phone because she viewed it similarly to a household landline.Defense attorneys have argued that Kaley's mental health problems were caused by difficulties at home rather than the platforms themselves. Evidence introduced at trial suggested the plaintiff had conflicts with her mother, including allegations of neglect, verbal abuse, and limited supervision of internet use. The defense also pointed to bullying and other personal issues as alternative explanations for the plaintiff's struggles. Meanwhile, a former Meta employee testified that internal company information suggested Instagram could be addictive and harmful to young users, although defense lawyers challenged his credibility and the extent of his involvement with safety issues. The plaintiff's final expert witness discussed ways social media companies could design safer platforms for children. After the plaintiff rested, Meta began presenting its defense with testimony from school administrators connected to the plaintiff. The case is the first bellwether trial among thousands of similar lawsuits consolidated in California, with outcomes potentially shaping settlement negotiations and future trials. TikTok and Snap previously settled with this plaintiff, but the broader litigation against social media companies continues.Meta, Google Begin Defense As Mental Harm Plaintiff Rests - Law360 UKThe U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency told a federal trade court that it expects to create a system within about 45 days to process refunds for tariffs that were previously imposed under President Donald Trump and later ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. The tariffs generated roughly $166 billion in payments from about 330,000 importers, and the Court's decision did not specify how those funds should be returned. As a result, government lawyers and a judge from the U.S. Court of International Trade are working to establish a practical process for issuing refunds.Under the proposed plan, importers would submit a declaration through CBP's electronic system detailing the tariffs they paid. The agency would verify the information and then issue a single payment from the Treasury Department to each importer, including interest. Officials say this approach would avoid forcing businesses to file individual lawsuits to recover their money. The judge overseeing the matter recently modified an earlier order that required immediate refunds, acknowledging that the agency needs time to build a workable system.CBP explained that its current administrative system cannot automatically process refunds on the massive scale required. Importers paid tariffs on more than 53 million shipments, and manually reviewing each transaction could require millions of hours of labor. Several large companies, including affiliates of Nintendo and CVS, have already filed lawsuits seeking repayment, though the government hopes a broader refund system will resolve claims more efficiently.Business groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have supported the proposal, saying it could simplify the process for smaller companies. However, officials noted that relatively few importers have registered for the electronic refund system created earlier this year. The court continues to oversee the development of the refund process through a test case that could guide how payments are returned to all affected businesses.US customs agency expects tariff refund system to be ready in 45 days | Reuters This is a public episode. This week inside the courtroom, science took center stage — and the stakes were higher than ever.Dr. Kara Bagot, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who helped develop the NIH's landmark ABCD brain study, spent five days on the stand. She testified that to a reasonable degree of medical certainty, Kaley developed social media addiction — and that YouTube acted as the “gateway,” beginning at just six years old. She walked the jury through the platform features that fuel compulsive use: infinite scroll, autoplay, algorithms, notifications, likes, filters, Shorts, Reels, and the lack of meaningful age verification.Under intense cross-examination from Meta and YouTube's attorneys, Dr. Bagot held her ground — insisting on context over yes-or-no soundbites. Jurors watched closely. When she was finally excused, there as a quiet applause. Then came former Meta safety executive and whistleblower Arturo Bejar. He testified that by 2019, Meta researchers had identified addiction as a serious issue — but leadership discouraged even using the word, replacing it with “problematic use.” He described internal knowledge of harmful design choices, ineffective safety tools, and what he called “dark patterns,” including the infamous “blue button” that discouraged user reporting.Arturo also testified that age verification is not technically difficult — and that Meta could remove millions of under-13 users if it chose to.Next up was child safety expert and mom, Brooke Istook. Brooke powerfully described the generational tech gap, Instagram's growth team promoting FINSTAs, misleading safety promises, and the no-win position families face trying to supervise platforms designed to outmaneuver them.By week's end, the Plaintiffs rested their case and the Defense began calling witnesses in the form of video depositions.Meanwhile, outside this courtroom, the pressure is mounting. Big tech lobbyists have infiltrated important online safety legislation and 33 new families across 19 states have joined the consolidated JCCP litigation, with Roblox newly added to the complaints.Thousands of families. Dozens of states. And now jurors — everyday people — watching some of the richest companies in the world fight a single family over what caused a young girl's harm. These are the tobacco trials of our generation. We're inside the courtroom translating it all in real time — joined this week by Christine Almadjian, legislative consultant and courtroom observer, and Lennon Torres of Heat Initiative — bringing you the moments that mattered, the legal context behind the strategy, and what it means for families everywhere.Because this fight isn't abstract. It's about the apps in our kids' pockets. It's about truth, justice and accountability. And it's about whether these companies will finally be forced to change. We stand with families. The Heat is On...Big Tech on Trial is an investigative mini-series by Scrolling 2 Death, in partnership with Heat Initiative.Video Editing expertly provided by Jacob Meade.

Christine is also a legislative consultant with END OSEAC.Thousands of families, school districts, and dozens of states have filed consolidated lawsuits against TikTok, YouTube, Meta, and Snap Inc., alleging their platforms were deliberately designed to addict and harm children. Some are calling this “the tobacco trial of our generation.”The first case centers on Kaley — a child like yours and mine — facing the most powerful companies in the world. This week, YouTube's VP of Engineering defended the algorithm as internal documents revealed research linking excessive use to addiction, sleep disruption, anxiety, depression, and body image issues — along with features like autoplay designed to increase watch time. We heard testimony that kids using YouTube while logged out are treated like adults, with no safety features enabled.A data expert challenged Meta and YouTube's reported ad revenue from minors, citing “significant errors and contradictions,” followed by testimony from Kaley's therapist. Then Kaley took the stand. She described creating multiple accounts to like her own videos and posts, sneaking her phone at night, spending up to 16 hours a day on Instagram, feeling panic without her device — and still, at 20 years old, struggling to stop. When asked whether she had addiction, anxiety, depression, or body dysmorphia before social media, her answer was simple: no.Meta and YouTube pushed back hard, pointing to family conflict and school bullying. This Day in Legal History: Hiram Rhodes RevelsOn February 25, 1870, Hiram Rhodes Revels was sworn in as the first African American to serve in the United States Senate. His election came during the turbulent Reconstruction era that followed the Civil War, a period defined by constitutional change and political uncertainty. Revels represented Mississippi, a former Confederate state that had only recently been readmitted to the Union. In a moment heavy with symbolism, he filled the Senate seat once held by Jefferson Davis, the former president of the Confederacy. The contrast between the two men reflected the profound transformation taking place in American law and government.Revels' swearing-in came after the ratification of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, which abolished slavery, guaranteed equal protection, and protected voting rights regardless of race. His presence in the Senate gave tangible meaning to those constitutional promises. Yet his path to office was not without challenge. Some senators argued that he did not meet the Constitution's nine-year citizenship requirement, claiming that the Supreme Court's decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford had denied Black Americans citizenship before the Civil War. Supporters countered that the 14th Amendment had settled the question of citizenship, making Revels eligible to serve. The Senate ultimately voted to seat him, affirming the legal force of the Reconstruction Amendments.Revels served only a brief term, but his impact was lasting. His election marked a rare window in American history when federal power was actively used to expand civil and political rights in the South. Although Reconstruction would eventually give way to decades of segregation and disenfranchisement, February 25, 1870 stands as a reminder of a constitutional moment when the nation attempted to redefine equality under the law.The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission released its first major update to its enforcement manual in eight years, outlining a new vision focused on fairness and transparency. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins described the revisions as overdue and said the agency will now review the manual annually. The updated 115-page guide provides clearer direction on how enforcement investigations will proceed and what options are available to individuals and companies under scrutiny. One key change involves the Wells process, which notifies potential defendants that SEC staff intend to recommend enforcement action. Under the revised policy, recipients of a Wells notice will have four weeks to submit a written response. After filing that response, they may request a meeting with senior leadership in the Division of Enforcement to argue against pursuing charges or to present their perspective on the case.Atkins has previously indicated that reforming the Wells process is a priority, emphasizing the need for accurate and carefully considered enforcement actions. Enforcement Division Director Meg Ryan also noted that a persuasive Wells response can influence whether commissioners ultimately approve a case. The manual further reinstates the ability of settling parties to request waivers from automatic industry bars that can follow enforcement actions. In addition, it introduces clearer guidance on how cooperation may reduce penalties and explains how the SEC may coordinate with criminal authorities. Overall, the agency says the revisions aim to clarify how it enforces federal securities laws and strengthen public confidence in the process.SEC Lays Out New Enforcement Vision In Revised Guidelines - Law360Paramount Skydance has submitted a revised proposal to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, as a bidding battle with Netflix continues. The new offer follows the expiration of a seven-day waiver period under WBD's existing merger agreement with Netflix. For Paramount's deal to move forward, WBD's board must first determine that the revised bid qualifies as a “Company Superior Proposal” under the Netflix agreement. After that, a four-business-day match period would need to pass, the Netflix agreement would have to be terminated, and a new definitive agreement would need to be signed with Paramount. While the board reviews the updated proposal, Paramount said it will keep its tender offer in place and continue urging shareholders to reject what it calls the less favorable Netflix transaction. The rivalry between the bidders has spilled into public statements, with Paramount criticizing the structure of the Netflix deal as potentially reducing shareholder value. Netflix has pushed back, accusing Paramount of mischaracterizing regulatory issues and focusing on appearances rather than results.WBD confirmed it received the revised bid but reiterated that its current merger agreement with Netflix remains active and that the board still recommends the Netflix deal. Specific terms of Paramount's updated offer were not disclosed, though it recently added financial safeguards, regulatory commitments, and an offer to cover the breakup fee if WBD exits the Netflix agreement. Netflix's agreement to acquire WBD's studio and streaming operations is valued at about $82.7 billion, while Paramount's competing proposal to purchase the entire company is valued at roughly $108.4 billion.Paramount Revises WBD Offer As Netflix Bid War Goes On - Law360A federal judge has temporarily barred prosecutors from freely searching devices seized from a Washington Post reporter during a national security leak investigation. The FBI searched reporter Hannah Natanson's home in January and took electronic devices as part of a probe into the alleged disclosure of government secrets. Natanson, who has reported on President Donald Trump's efforts to dismiss large numbers of federal employees, has not been charged with any crime.U.S. Magistrate Judge William Porter ruled that the government may not conduct an unrestricted review of the seized materials. Instead, he said the court will oversee the examination of the devices to ensure that journalistic protections are respected while still allowing investigators to seek relevant evidence. Porter rejected the Justice Department's request to let prosecutors carry out a broad, unsupervised search.Justice Department attorneys had argued that reviewing the materials was essential to a criminal investigation involving national security concerns. They proposed using a separate FBI “filter team” to screen the data and remove irrelevant content before investigators accessed it. The judge's order reflects an effort to balance press freedom with the government's authority to pursue evidence in sensitive cases.US judge blocks search of Washington Post reporter's devices | ReutersA California woman is set to testify in Los Angeles that her early use of Instagram and YouTube harmed her mental health, in a closely watched trial against Meta and Google. The plaintiff, identified as Kaley G.M., says she began using YouTube at age six and Instagram at nine, and later struggled with depression and body dysmorphia. Her attorneys argue the companies deliberately designed their platforms to attract and retain young users despite being aware of potential psychological risks. The case is part of a broader international push to address the impact of social media on children, with some countries already imposing restrictions. Earlier phases of the trial focused on what the companies knew about the effects of their platforms on young users and how they targeted that demographic. Now the proceedings are turning to Kaley's personal experiences and whether the platforms substantially contributed to her mental health challenges. To succeed, her legal team must prove that the design or operation of the platforms was a significant factor in causing or worsening her condition. Meta has pointed to her history of family instability and alleged abuse as alternative explanations for her struggles. Her lawyer, however, referenced internal company research suggesting that teens facing difficult circumstances were more likely to use Instagram compulsively. The lawsuit also challenges features such as autoplay videos, endless scrolling, “like” buttons, and beauty filters, which the plaintiff claims encouraged prolonged use and distorted self-image. YouTube's defense argues that she did not fully use available safety tools and presented data indicating her recent average viewing time was relatively limited.Woman suing Meta, YouTube over social media addiction takes the stand at trial | Reuters This is a public episode. By David Stephen The first admission, regarding solving social media addiction and harm for users, especially teens, is that digital is generally harder to enforce than the physical. This is, in part, evident where, to enforce some barriers in digital, physical [like IDs] maybe necessary. It is not very useful to directly compare safeguards for social media with physical facilities, like seatbelts, which are easier to detect by enforcement as well as have menacing alarms and alerts implemented. Can Brain Science Solve Social Media Addiction? Evasion and bypass are more common with digital that even in some strict cases, for public platforms, access is possible for those who should not see it. This means that while social media companies are expected to do better, there is also the chance to put forward potent solutions that would ensure that people are not just restricted, but they also do not want it. Simply, whatever social media is that make users swarm it can be said to do something for people, or that people want it. So, how can people not want it, or want it less? This was a method with cigarettes, where packs were suffused with grim images of [health and life] losses, such that even as some people ignored it, it made a mind dent for some, that they were never unaware of what is probable, in the side-effects of it. While this may not work for social media, because it is static, it indicates that a means to have it repelled will be useful to ensure people do not have their minds become casualties of social media, especially during formative years. For example, AI chatbots have mild and static messages, but they have been unable to make any difference for those that leapt in to AI delusion and AI psychosis. There is a recent [February 13, 2026] guest essay in The New York Times, We're All in a Throuple With A.I., stating that, "but a polite suggestion after three hours of A.I. conversation is not enough. Why not play video testimonials from people whose human relationships withered after years of nonstop chat with bots?" While it is possible that this might work, it might be skipped or the people assume they won't fall the same way, while believing others have a problem. This leaves the option to the mind. Like a possible model of how the human mind works, to see corresponding relays and vulnerabilities [conceptually, at minimum]. Meta and YouTube Lawsuit There is a new [February 18, 2026] report on CNN, Meta's Zuckerberg testifies about social media's effects on children in landmark trial, stating that, "Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was grilled Wednesday about whether his company intentionally designed Instagram to be addictive, in front of the young woman accusing Meta and YouTube of hooking her as a child and damaging her mental health." "But Lanier showed an internal document from 2015 that estimated over 4 million Instagram users were under 13, which it said represented "30% of all 10-12 year olds in the US." Lanier has said the now-20-year-old plaintiff, Kaley, began using Instagram at age 9." "Lanier pointed out that it wasn't until December 2019 that Instagram began asking new users to input a birthdate when signing up; previously, it just asked them to confirm they were above the age of 13. Instagram in August 2021 started asking existing users to provide a birthdate if they hadn't done so previously, as part of a safety push for young people." "In another tense exchange, Lanier grilled Zuckerberg over Instagram's decision to allow "beauty" filters that manipulate a user's face to make it appear they're wearing makeup or have had facial surgery. Meta consulted with 18 experts that found such filters can cause harm, Lanier said." "Instagram ultimately decided to allow such filters created by users but not to promote them in the app." Mind Safety from Conceptual Brain Science While changes are expected for social media in the coming years, digital is already in the lives of children, in a way that will ultimately req...

We talk about grace a lot — but do we actually understand it? For many of us, grace feels like the doorway into faith … yet something we quietly try to “maintain” through our own effort. What if God never intended you to earn what He freely gives? In today's episode, writer and Bible teacher Kristel Acevedo joins Meredith Brock and Kaley Olson for a deeply clarifying conversation about the kind of grace Scripture describes — the grace that saves us and keeps us. Through biblical teaching, real-life stories, and practical wisdom, Kristel helps us see why striving leaves us exhausted, how sanctification actually works, and why resting in God's unshakable love is the starting place for real spiritual transformation. If you're tired of trying to be “good enough,” wrestling with shame, or wondering whether you've used up all of God's patience, this episode will breathe fresh hope into your heart. Grace isn't a one-time gift. It's the ongoing work of God in you — today, tomorrow, and every day after. You'll learn:What Scripture means when it says we are saved by grace — and why that same grace is what transforms us daily. The difference between working for God's acceptance and living from your secure identity in Christ. How sanctification really happens, and why slowing down helps us recognize the Holy Spirit's work in us.Why sharing grace with others matters, and how God can use your life to draw people to Himself.Resources From This Episode:When life feels uncertain, God's promises are not.
