Any other business Craig Maloney, host of the Open Metal Cast We received the sad news that fellow podcaster and host of the Open Metal Cast, Craig Maloney passed away. Obituary Markdown issue in show notes Syntax highlighting for fenced code blocks. An issue was raised on the Gitea repository for the hpr_generator. Show notes using Markdown fenced blocks which specify a language (e.g. python) are not being syntax highlighted as expected. This was turned off because the highlighting is implemented as HTML ( and tags) which was stripped by software on archive.org when the notes were uploaded. In case this restriction has been lifted, we will try uploading an example to see if highlighting is now available.

Any other business Many Podcatchers don't show the episode author It seems that the author fields in RSS and Atom feeds are not shown by a number of Podcatchers. This field is intended to show the author details, and with HPR shows it contains an obfuscated email address and a name: ken.nospam@nospam.fallon.ie (Ken Fallon) The lack of this information makes knowing who created a given HPR show difficult to determine before listening to it. A question has been raised as to whether we could include the author details at the start of the show notes. Comments are requested from the Community as to whether this would be a useful addition. The Corresponding Source - renamed podcast The Corresponding Source (formerly Free as in Freedom) is a bi-weekly oggcast, hosted and presented by Bradley M. Kuhn and Karen Sandler. The discussion includes legal, policy, and many other issues in the Free, Libre, and Open Source Software (FLOSS) world. Occasionally, guests join Bradley and Karen to discuss various topics regarding FLOSS. See HPR show 4079 HPR changes The correspondent pages which show details of a particular correspondent (host), and lists their shows, have been enhanced to include the profile which has been uploaded by the host. This was present on the old site but was omitted on the static site. This was issue number 181 on the Gitea site, which has been closed. Making a Pomodoro Timer Slacking Off at work I get distracted Easy My mind drifts if I try to focus on a single task For more than 20-30 Minutes. If I try to fight the urge to just keep working my productivity goes way down. I end up working for a bit, then slacking off for half an hour. I can get more work done If I embrace my limitation and force myself to take a break. Pomodoro Technique From Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a kitchen timer to break work into intervals, typically 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a Pomodoro, from the Italian word for tomato, after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer Cirillo used as a university student. The Timer There are plenty of Pomodoro Apps I've tried using an app, but I would often forget. I wanted a physical device that was always on by desk and could grab my attention. I looked for a dedicated physical Pomodoro timer, but only found the kitchen timers I decided to make myself a timer using a Circuit Playground Express Circuit Playground Express In my past episode about using a Pi pico to type passwords I mentioned I owned a playground express. The playground express is a micro controller with a lot of built ins 2 buttons 10 multi color LED ... Runs circuit python with lots of libraries so it is easy to program. TDD About once every other year I decided to start a project with as much TDD as I can. TDD Basics Write a test BEFORE you write the code Run the test - It will fail Write the simplest code that will pass the test Run the test and make sure it passes Refactor/improve the code if needed. TDD advantages Code is easy to separate into discrete functions Parts of the code can be rewritten without affecting the rest confidence in rewrites pomodoro.py Circuit python looks for and runs a file named code.py A lot of the circuit Python code has to be run on the micro controller My Developers workstation does not have the LED's or buttons I split the some code into a separate file based on if it could run in "regular" python. I used TDD as much as possible to test the functions in pomodoro.py code.py BREAK_MINUTES = 5 WORK_MINUTES = 25 Functions that require hardware No tests. counts down and changes color of led minutes divided by number of LED Using the timer Ready Green Light next to button to start work Period Blue Light next to button to start break Period Working White Background Green progress pixels Break White Background Blue progress pixels Button A Start working Button B Start Break Links https://gitlab.com/norrist/circuit_playground_pomodoro https://circuitpython.org/downloads https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-circuit-playground-express/circuitpython-neopixel

In this video, we dive into one of my favorite productivity planning apps called Sunsama. I've been following this app for a while now, and let me tell you, I'm a superfan! If you're interested in trying out Sunsama, make sure to use my affiliate link. By using my link, you'll get a free 30-day trial, which is longer than the typical 14-day trial period. This gives you plenty of time to fully test out Sunsama and see if it's the right fit for you. ✅ Free 30-day free trial of Sunsama App (affiliate link): https://try.sunsama.com/paul In this video, I'll give you a comprehensive overview of Sunsama and what makes it stand out from other productivity apps. The underlying principles of Sunsama help you focus on the most important tasks instead of cramming more into your day. It's a monofocus-centered app that is incredibly well designed and seamlessly integrates with other productivity project management tools like Asana and ClickUp. One of the things I love most about Sunsama is how peaceful and intuitive the user experience is. Plus, the Sunsama team constantly releases updates to improve the app's functionality and user experience. We'll also dive into some of the exciting new features that Sunsama has recently introduced. We have the Focus Bar, which allows you to stay on track and maintain your focus. There's also a built-in Pomodoro Timer, which is super handy for boosting productivity. And for those of you who need to take notes during meetings, Sunsama offers Simplified Meeting Notes with markdown support. But that's not all! Sunsama also has features like Auto Reschedule Tasks and Auto Add Calendar Events, which make managing your schedule a breeze. Now, I won't lie, Sunsama is not the cheapest option out there. However, if it helps you stay organized and focused, ultimately saving you time and money, it could be worth the investment. If you're still unsure whether Sunsama is right for you, I highly recommend downloading the app and giving it a try. So, if you're ready to supercharge your productivity and take control of your schedule, click the link below to get your free 30-day trial of Sunsama. ✅ Free 30-day free trial of Sunsama App (affiliate link): https://try.sunsama.com/paul Watch my previous Sunsama review here: https://youtu.be/8iTqcizfn0E?si=chi9hbUdslkGGkw9 TIMESTAMPS 0:00 What Is Sunsama 1:05 My Criteria For Productivity Apps 2:25 Sunsama App Layout 3:37 ClickUp Integration 4:03 Weekly Objectives 4:24 Backlog 5:01 Auto Archive 5:23 View Latest Updates 5:48 Integrations 6:34 Focus Mode 7:03 Pomodoro Timer 8:02 Focus Bar 8:26 Focus Bar Settings 9:06 Task Notes Using Markdown 9:41 How To Add A Task 10:22 How To Create And Align With A Weekly Objective 10:39 Time Remaining Toggle 11:05 Pomodoro Timer Demonstration 11:49 Auto Schedule Tasks On Calendar 12:16 Auto Reschedule Tasks 12:35 Daily Planning Ritual 17:40 ClickUp Task Details Within Sunsama 18:19 Calendar View 18:45 The Playlist Method 19:20 Checks On Calendar 19:37 Recurring Tasks 20:42 Monofocus 21:42 Align Task With Weekly Objective 22:25 Daily Shutdown Ritual 23:20 Weekly Planning Ritual 23:51 Weekly Review 25:03 Integration With Your Calendar 25:34 Simplified Meeting Notes 26:14 Analytics Feature26:53 The Pricing 30:32 Who Is Sunsama For

Overcoming Procrastination: A Step-by-Step Guide To Taking Action

The Mindset & Motivation Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 24, 2023 18:28

On today’s episode of The Mindset Mentor Podcast, we go through 6 steps to overcome procrastination. One of the main things that holds anyone back from achieving their goals is procrastination. It is literally the thief of your joy.  But if you want to build the life that you want, you’re going have to figure out how to get past this bad habit. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, build a business, etc… and if you’re guilty of procrastination… then this is the episode you need to help you move forward.  The first step in overcoming your procrastination is going to be understanding what it is, and why you do it. Then I’m also going to give you practical strategies that you can actually apply to your life right away to get started beating your procrastination, and upgrade your life. Here’s the 6 steps to overcoming procrastination.  1.  Recognize and acknowledge that procrastination is something that you do.  This is tricky because it’ll mask itself in different ways such as, “I’m hungry”, “I need a nap”, etc. If you’re consistently finding yourself delaying tasks that are really important… there’s a pretty good change you’re procrastinating.  2.  Understand your triggers. For some, procrastination comes from an underlying cause. Ie: You’re afraid of failure, you’re afraid of being judged… and for some others you procrastinate because you have trained yourself to immediate gratification. No matter what your triggers are, you have to identify them so you can start to make a plan for what you can do the next time you’re triggered. 3. Start breaking down your tasks into smaller, more manageable parts.  A lot of time procrastination attacks you, because your brain is thinking of too many things all at once causing paralysis by analysis. Breaking your tasks down into smaller “sub-tasks” will make things less daunting.  4. Get better at your time management.  Some techniques you can try are the Pomodoro Timer. They have physical timers you can purchase, but there’s actually a FREE version online that I personally use and everyone has access. You can also batch your tasks, by figuring out which tasks you have that you can accomplish in pairs.  5. Set specific, and achievable goals.  Instead of saying something like, “Work on the report”, you can say something like, “Write introduction to report by 10 am.”  6. Reward yourself! If your present self wants immediate procrastination… then how could you make that happen as soon as you accomplish something? Some examples would be getting to celebrate yourself with things that you love. Like a short break, cup of coffee, or anything else that feels like a treat and will bring you a small hit of dopamine.  Everyone in the world has to face procrastination, but what I want you to know is that the secret to getting ahead in life is just getting started. Even if that’s just one step at a time. If you like this episode…  Make sure to share it with someone that needs to hear it and help us get the message out there so that together we can help make people’s lives better and make the world a better place.  And BY THE WAY: My first book that I’ve ever written is now available for pre-order. It’s called LEVEL UP and It’s a step-by-step guide to go from where you are now, to where you want to be as fast as possible.Within its pages, you'll discover powerful insights and practical steps that will revolutionize the way you approach your goals, personal motivation, and mental focus.

Today we are talking about Tip #8 for Staying Focused and on Track to Achieving Your Goals, which is Ready-Set-Go! For intense task completion, use a timer and set it for 15, 20 or 30 minutes. In the old days the timer was called an egg timer that you wound up manually and it would ding when the time was up. Today, you can easily use your phone to help you with this. There is also something called the Pomodoro Timer which you can also use. Using a timer allows you to create a game or healthy competition against the clock - giving your focus and energy an edge. You'd be surprised how much you can accomplish when you create a fun or somewhat competitive environment for yourself. Tune in tomorrow for Tip #9 for helping you stay focused, so you can achieve your goals.  Subscribe to my high-value proven business success tips and resources Blog (https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/blog/)  Take advantage of all the complimentary business tips and tools by joining the Free Silver Membership on https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/coaching-store/inner-circle-store/.  Want more from The Accountability Coach™, subscribe to more high-value content by looking for me on https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/my-podcast/ and on most podcast platforms and in most English-speaking countries, or by going to https://itunes.apple.com/podcast/accountabilitycoach.com/id290547573.  For more help with growing your business and accelerating your results, reach out to me today and schedule your complimentary consultation. Go to https://www.accountabilitycoach.com to check out for yourself how I, as your Accountability Coach™, can help you get and stay focused on you highest payoff activities that put you in the highest probability position to achieve your professional and personal goals, so you can enjoy the kind of business and life you truly want and deserve.  As an experienced accountability coach and author of many books, I help business professionals make more money, work less, and enjoy even better work life balance. Check out my proven business accelerator resources by going to https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/coaching-store/.  Aim for what you want each and every day!  Anne BachrachThe Accountability Coach™

Let’s be real… You waste a lot of time, don’t you? Here’s the reality: A lot of us are naturally good at wasting time… Now here’s the good news: I believe that being more and more efficient with your time is a skillset that you have to constantly work on. Which means… If you’ve sucked at time management in the past… You can start changing that TODAY. You can actually grow and develop the skillset necessary to actually get more done in less time. Does that sound crazy? Is it really that hard to believe that maybe you don’t HAVE to be the person you were yesterday… today? Let me help you… I am going to teach you how to follow 3 simple techniques that will build upon each other to help you start getting more s**t done…in less time. Here’s those 3 techniques: 1. Time to follow the “80/20 rule”. (aka the Pareto Principle) You have to realize that your brain has a limited capacity to process information, you have a limited amount of energy throughout your day, and… you technically even have a limited day because you only have 24 hours. So how can you bring your energy towards what matters most? Take your attention and throw it towards what matters most. 80% of your outcomes come from 20% of the actions you take. 1. Start batching.  Here’s what that means… Figure out what tasks you need to do, and determine the best way to do as many as possible in a sprint of a couple hours. (Maybe even minutes, depending on what you’re trying to accomplish.) 2. Use the Pomodoro Timer! The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method based on 25-minute stretches of focused work broken by five-minute breaks. To start using it just go to this link: https://pomofocus.io/ If you like this episode… Then make sure to share it with someone that needs to hear it and help us get the message out there so that together we can help make people’s lives better and make the world a better place. P.S- I’ve got a gift for you… If you’re out there and find yourself caught up in this vicious cycle of paralysis by analysis every day, then after you hear this episode you’ll probably need some extra structure to keep you on track. Visit: www.mindsetmentorjournal.com and take advantage of this free resource guaranteed to help you experience transformation in your life. The biggest challenge most meditators face is finding enough time to practice -- and the Pomodoro Timer method is my favorite way to get around this. In this episode, I'll dive into the Pomodoro Timer method and show you how it can help you get more time to meditate. So if you're a meditator who always wishes you had more time for practice, listen now and download my free time tracking spreadsheet! Get the free spreadsheet and future video trainings: https://geni.us/pom4meditators Watch the video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/DHxnTE11ADU My favorite Chrome extension timer: https://geni.us/K1p1 The Pomodoro Timer method is a great way to get more time for meditation because it helps you break down your day into manageable chunks. Essentially, the Pomodoro Timer method works like this: you work for 25 minutes and then take a five minute break. After four “pomodoros” (i.e. working for 25 minutes and then taking a five minute break), you take a longer break of 15 minutes. If you use even a few of these breaks to meditate, you'll easy get 20, 30 or more minutes back from your day to nourish your spirit. Using the Pomodoro Timer method also helps you refresh your mind and finish the workday less mentally fatigued. And you can reconnect with a positive motivation for your daily work tasks. May you and all beings be well. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/buddhist-wisdom/message

This perspective can be detrimental; and to reframe it you must make the effort to set yourself up for success. Part of that set up includes the right apps for productivity. In this episode, you will hear about a few of the apps that have helped me to shift my perspective on time management and productivity. In a lot of ways they have been a game changer in helping me to appreciate my time as an abundant resource. Learn about... 1. RescueTime (https://www.rescuetime.com) 2. Trello (https://trello.com) 3. A Retrospective on Vacations If you love your work and are very driven, the idea of “vacation” can be a daunting thing. In this episode of SoundNotes, Derek Huether and Dave Prior hold a retrospective on how they each coped with the challenge of taking time-off from work over the holiday. If you count yourself among the vacation challenged, this conversation may provide insight into why you need to take the time, why you need to protect the time BUT why your version of taking a break to restore yourself doesn’t have to fit the standard definition of “vacation”. Show Notes 00:08 Podcast Begins 00:17 Topic Intro - a Retrospective on taking vacation 00:52 Derek explains why he took his first vacation in almost 2 years 02:07 Pre-vacation anxiety 03:12 If you get grumpy when you don’t have too much work to do “YOU NEED TO GET AWAY” 03:52 When your sustainable pace is an unsustainable pace 04:10 Some of us are wired a little weird and there is no “balance” 05:11 Sometimes having too much to do can be a positive 06:03 The dopamine rush of getting something done… how much sleep do you really need 07:33 Debating the argument for getting “enough” sleep 09:14 Derek’s Kanban board for vacation activities 11:06 What Derek reads on the beach for relaxation (feel free to roll your eyes) 12:00 How “the damn ocean and seagulls” prevented Derek from relaxing with his DevOps books on the beach and how the Beastie Boys saved the day 13:20 If you are reading work related books on the beach, aren’t you still at work? 14:10 When you take time off from work and your hobbies are work related 15:48 Finding your own way to satisfy the need to unplug, take a break and get refreshed 16:38 The restorative joy that comes from watching seagulls attack people 17:08 Pomodoro Timer 17:22 The weight of vacation guilt - for doing work, or for not really taking “vacation” 18:20 Why would you want to go on vacation and be remorseful when it is supposed to be a reward 19:14 Derek’s trick of reserving play time as a planned activity 20:15 Having intentionality and discipline to carve out time for creative fun stuff 20:48 Super not productive time may be recovery time and that is part of being productive 21:30 Giving yourself permission to be not productive and then protecting that time 21:55 What happens when YOU don’t respect your not productive time 22:20 “I have to respect it” and take the time without carrying the guilt 23:04 Dave’s resolution to get less done in 2017 and trying to create a small vacation every day 23:45 Derek’s quiet time (with coffee) 25:10 Meditation … it’s not about emptying your mind - it’s about not dancing with the thoughts that arise 26:20 Derek’s version of meditation - post-its and coffee 26:50 It’s a way of looking at your though and saying “yeah, but not right now” 27:02 Wrap up thoughts, it’s okay to suck at vacation, it’s okay to not do stuff, protect the time with discipline, acknowledge that you derive and need the time, and don’t let other people tell you how much time you should take 27:56 Podcast End Links from the Podcast Visible Ops Handbook http://amzn.to/2jzVqKM DevOps Handbook http://amzn.to/2iTX8FM Ariana Huffington “The Sleep Revolution” http://amzn.to/2k2ySik Contacting Derek You can reach Derek on the LeadingAgile site at https://www.leadingagile.com/guides/derek-huether/ On Twitter at https://twitter.com/derekhuether Or on his personal site at http://www.derekhuether.com Contacting Dave You can reach Dave on the LeadingAgile site at https://www.leadingagile.com/guides/dave-prior/ On Twitter at https://twitter.com/mrsungo Or on his personal site at: http://drunkenpm.net

Fifteen Ways to Improve Your Odds of Author Success: (In order of importance) Read Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck Read The Willpower Instinct by Dr. Kelly McGonigal Read Dangerous Personalities by Joe Navarro Read The Definitive Book of Body Language by Allan and Barbara Pease Contemplate what you've read. Allow it to weave its way into your mind, interactions with others, and your writing. Create your author mantra. Post it where you'll see it.(Ex. Publishing isn't a race.) Create a loose or detailed outline for your fiction project including completion expectations, goals, and objectives. Think about cover art. Hire a graphic designer. Carve out writing time. Try a Pomodoro Timer. Sneak it in wherever you're able or schedule it into your day. Create an author website. Nothing fancy. A simple landing page will work in the beginning.  Complete the first draft. Edit and revise it. Send it to an editor. Begin writing your next book. After you receive edits for the first book, temporarily stop working on the second book. Finish book one, including formatting, cover art, and publishing BEFORE continuing your work on book two. (Unless you have no other obligations. In that case, you'll be able to juggle both activities.) Complete first draft of book two and repeat this step. Don't obsess about sales rank or numbers, but if you can't help yourself, then check out KDPulse.  Learn the importance of meta data: categories and keyword phrases. Play with these. Be consistent as you create your author brand. Create and use the same (or basically the same bio everywhere. Also use the same image.) List your book as a pre-order. Why? It motivates you to finish the book. Create a print version.
