Materialists and The Ideal Mate Illusion in Modern Matchmaking

Depraved and Debaucherous

The new film Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson as a high-end matchmaker named Lucy, delves into the transactional and often delusional world of modern dating, particularly as experienced by her wealthy clients in New York City. While the movie aims to offer a sharp, even cynical, look at the pursuit of love, its portrayal of matchmaking and the expectations of potential mates has sparked strong reactions from real-life matchmakers. The core of the film's narrative, and a point of contention for many real matchmakers, lies in the delusion of the potential mates. Lucy's clients are often characterized by their highly specific, almost superficial, checklists for an ideal partner – focusing on attributes like height, net worth, and a perfect "image." This "build a bear" approach, as one matchmaker describes it, sets unrealistic expectations, leading clients to chase an unattainable ideal rather than seeking genuine connection. The film highlights how individuals, driven by the curated realities of social media and a culture of commodification, believe they can simply "recreate" a perfect partner. This delusion is not confined to the fictional world of Materialists but resonates deeply with everyday dating life. In a landscape saturated with dating apps and curated online profiles, individuals often fall into the trap of viewing potential partners as a collection of desirable traits rather than complex individuals. This "materialistic" approach to love, where people are "objectified" and "commodified," as writer-director Celine Song herself notes, fosters a superficial pursuit that often leads to disappointment and a struggle to find true compatibility. While some aspects of Lucy's dedication to her clients and her post-date follow-ups are recognized as realistic, real matchmakers largely critique Materialists for its unrealistic depiction of their profession. They point out that true matchmaking involves far more than simply fulfilling a checklist; it requires deep emotional intelligence, building trust, and often challenging clients' preconceived notions to help them find meaningful relationships. The film's emphasis on dramatic, ethically questionable scenarios (like stalking or the mishandling of client safety) further deviates from the professional standards and community-driven nature of the actual matchmaking industry. Ultimately, Materialists serves as a cinematic reflection on the often-delusional pursuit of the "perfect" partner in contemporary dating, highlighting the gap between idealized expectations and the messy, human reality of finding love.Contact KOP for professional podcast production, imaging, and web design services at http://www.kingofpodcasts.comSupport KOP by subscribing to his YouTube channel and search for King Of PodcastsFollow KOP on X or TikTok or LinkedIn @kingofpodcastsFind KOP's other programs, Podcasters Row… and the Wrestling is Real Wrestling Podcast and The Broadcasters Podcast at http://www.kingofpodcasts.comBuy KOP a Coffee https://buymeacoffee.com/kingofpodcastsDrop KOP a PayPal https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=3TAB983ZQPNVLDrop KOP a CashApp https://cash.app/$kingofallpodcastsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/depraved-and-debaucherous--5267208/support.

Ever wonder what happens when a PR matchmaker draws a hard line against fossil fuel clients? Meet Steven Shimek. In this eye-opening conversation, Keith Zackheim welcomes the owner and CMO of Shimek Strategic—an influential voice who helps determine which agencies win multi-million dollar RFPs. Steven pulls back the curtain on agency practices most clients never see. "What I try to do is educate our world of marketers about what's not in the deck, what's not on the logo slides," he explains, revealing how his network of 5,000+ marketing professionals gives him insider knowledge about which agencies secretly represent oil and gas interests. But this isn't just business—it's personal. After watching Greta Thunberg stand up to "mean, aggressive, angry, belittling people," Steven reconnected with his environmental science roots. He traded his Yukon Denali for a hybrid. He made tough choices. Despite the financial hit, he vowed never to work with agencies representing oil, gas, tobacco or firearms. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when discussing today's political climate, where companies are "green hushing" their sustainability efforts. Yet Steven remains optimistic. "Even if it is hushed, I truly believe companies are still going to do the right thing," he insists, noting that abandoning sustainability triggers "a continuous low roar" of customer discontent. For communications professionals navigating this shifting landscape, this episode offers both practical wisdom and moral clarity from someone who's seen it all—and chosen which side of history he wants to stand on.Steven Shimek is the Owner and CMO of Shimek Strategic, an influential agency matchmaker who has helped over 1,600 companies across 46 countries find their ideal marketing partners. With a Master's in Environmental Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Steven combines his deep environmental knowledge with extensive industry experience gained at PR Newswire, Ruder Finn, and Fleishman Hillard. What sets him apart is his principled stance against representing agencies that work with fossil fuel, tobacco, firearms, or private prison companies, despite potential revenue loss. Inspired by climate activists like Greta Thunberg and his own children, Steven has transformed his business into a vehicle for positive change, educating marketing leaders about agency transparency while helping brands find partners whose values align with their sustainability goals. In This Episode:(00:00) Steven's career journey from PR Newswire to Shimek Strategic(08:14) Agencies adopting climate values and sustainability practices(10:39) Steven's environmental science background and personal awakening(14:08) How Steven brings transparency to agency selection process(16:08) Discussion of "green hushing" in the current political climate(19:08) Forecast for sustainability in corporate communications(21:21) Conclusion and information about Antenna GroupShare with someone who would enjoy this topic, like and subscribe to hear all of our future episodes, send us your comments and guest suggestions!About the show: The Age of Adoption podcast explores the monumental transition from a period of climate tech research and innovation – an Age of Innovation – to today's world in which companies across the economy are furiously adopting climate solutions - the Age of Adoption. ¿Qué me pongo? Tinder lanza citas dobles: ahora puedes invitar a tu mejor amiga y conocer juntos a otra pareja. ¿Quién te acompañaría?Escucha más en Flash Diario en Spotify

What happens after the cheering stops? For James Hilovsky, it meant trading his baseball uniform for business ownership—and helping other athletes do the same. In Part One, James shares how his short-lived pro sports career led to 25 years in restaurant franchising, including scaling Pieology from one store to over 100.Now, as a franchise consultant, James works with NFL and NBA players looking to invest wisely, build generational wealth, and transition from the field to the franchise world. He explains how the mindset of elite athletes—structured, coachable, and risk-tolerant—makes them natural fits for franchise success. If you've ever wondered what it takes to make the leap from sports to business, this episode is your playbook.Key Highlights of Our Interview:From Dugout to Dining Room“My playing career ended fast—but the restaurant world gave me a new team and a new game to master.”Scaling Pieology: A Fast-Casual Success Story“We went from one location to over 100 franchises. That's where I really learned what franchisees need.”Helping Athletes Avoid Bad Deals“I saw too many players get pitched sketchy investments. I wanted to be a safe, informed resource.”What COVID Taught Us About Franchising“People were stuck at home, rethinking their jobs—and ready to bet on themselves.”Sports Teams and Franchise Systems: More Alike Than You Think“Both have playbooks. Both have coaches. And success comes from following the system.”Why Athletes Thrive in Business“They're used to risk, coaching, and performance pressure. That's the foundation of good franchisees.”Case Study: From NFL to Mental Health Franchise“A retired Super Bowl winner found purpose building a clinic network for athletes dealing with post-concussion trauma.”Case Study: A Family Franchise Plan in Atlanta“A former MLB player launched a dog grooming business—with his wife and kids running the first store.”The Top 3 Qualities That Make Athletes Business-Ready“Risk tolerance, coachability, and natural leadership. Starting a franchise isn't just a business move—it's a mindset shift. In Part Two, James Hilovsky—former athlete turned franchise consultant—goes beyond playbooks and into the real psychology of success. He explores why some athletes stumble when they let ego overtake strategy, how corporate professionals can regain control after layoffs, and why betting on yourself only works when you're honest about what kind of help you need. From risk tolerance to leadership, coachability to due diligence, this episode is packed with reality checks and real encouragement for anyone eyeing a second career through franchising. Whether you're leaving the field or the boardroom, this is your roadmap for moving forward without going it alone.Key Highlights of Our Interview:When Ego Derails the Dream“Some athletes think, ‘I can do it better than the franchisor.' That mindset usually ends badly.”Coachable or Combative? Know the Difference“If you hated taking advice on the field, franchising might not be for you. Try entrepreneurship instead.”From Control to Chaos: Managing the Transition“Athletes are used to structure. Business is messy. That gap has to be managed with education and support.”Risk Is a Feature, Not a Bug“Franchising reduces risk—but it doesn't remove it. You still have to lead, decide, and adapt.”Franchisor as Business Partner, Not Boss“The best franchisors act like coaches. They'll guide you—but they won't run the plays for you.”Red Flags in the Franchise World“If someone tells you it's a ‘hands-off' business or dodges your due diligence questions—run.”Advice for Non-Athletes“If fear is stopping you, ask yourself: what's the real cost of staying stuck?”Doing the Homework Before the Leap“Talk to existing franchisees. Read the FDD. And never skip the financials.”The Impact That Keeps Him Going“I love helping people find a franchise they didn't even know existed—and watching it change their lives.”_________________________Connect with us:Host: Vince Chan | Guest: James Hilovsky  --Chief Change Officer--Change Ambitiously. This week, Matchmaker Maria sits down with journalist Vera Papisova, who went undercover on conservative dating apps during the 2024 election cycle. Her goal? To investigate the rise of red pill culture, Christian nationalism, and the growing appeal of traditional gender roles among men in far-right dating spaces. From secret neo-Nazi meetings in New York to profiles proudly declaring “pureblood” status and requests for “biblical wives,” Vera reveals how misogyny, extremism, and identity politics are shaping romantic expectations and emotional behavior. What began as a journalistic experiment quickly evolved into an unsettling exploration of trauma, projection, and toxic masculinity. Maria and Vera also reflect on the backlash they received after discussing red pill content online, exposing the volatile intersection of media, dating, and power. Whether you're dating in New York or simply curious about how political ideology infiltrates personal relationships, this episode offers a gripping look at the psychology behind modern extremism and how it shows up on your screen.
