Xennial. It’s not a word that you hear very often. You’re probably more familiar with terms like Baby Boomers, Millennials and now Gen Zs. We hadn’t really heard about it ourselves until we were looking for names for our podcast. When we did, we thought it was a perfect way to describe our own generation: late 70s and early 80s babies who have had the privilege of experiencing life before and after the internet. In our first episode, we reminisce on what it what was like growing up in the 90s and the giddy excitement of experiencing the World Wide Web for the first time--a feeling that is often lost on Gen Zs who haven’t known a world without it. Can we talk about those cringe worthy first email addresses? (No shade to the sexyjohndoes@lycos.com) Better yet, the discovery of a plethora of chat rooms that proliferated the late 90s and early 2000s, long before forums like Facebook and Snapchat? Being an Xennial also means that we have just entered or are about to enter a new decade: the fabulous forties. What does turning 40 mean? Would you consider it to be old or is 40 the new 30? As women of Caribbean descent in the bustling multi-cultural city of Birmingham, we discuss some of the complexities that we find ourselves experiencing whilst we embark on this new era. If you fancy reminiscing on the past and exploring difficult conversations surrounding blackness, womanhood, family, baby loss and grief, be sure to take a listen to our very first episode.
