Versed's Katherine Power and Lola Gonzalez Marra: ‘Every great brand should evolve its look and feel every five years'

“I believe that every great brand should evolve its look and feel about every five years,” said Katherine Power, serial entrepreneur and the founder of Versed skin care. “Since our launch in 2019, we've seen that our core customer, who is primarily an older millennial or young Gen X — I call them Xennials — has really grown along with us, and we wanted to continue to grow with them and to create something fresh and modern.” This included a refresh of packaging, visuals and language overseen by Lola Gonzalez Marra, Versed's longtime creative lead. Power and Marra have worked together for more than a decade on Power's many entrepreneurial projects, including editorial sites WhoWhatWear and Byrdie — which Power launched with Hillary Kerr in 2006 and 2013, respectively — as well as color cosmetics line Merit, which Power founded in 2021.  “We decided we needed to evolve enough that it's a change, but not so much that you go on Versed one day and it's a completely different brand,” said Marra. As Power and Marra explained on this episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, the refresh has been in the works for over a year.  Versed was launched in 2019 from data and insights learned at Byrdie and WhoWhatWear, which Power and Kerr have since sold to publisher Dotdash in 2019 and publisher Future Brands in 2022, respectively.  Thanks to Versed's omnichannel strategy where 75% of its sales are through Target, switching over merchandise has required a unique strategy. Hint: Versed is selling off older products DTC for 30% off right now. The team also rolled out tweaks to its social media aesthetic and naming formula for products. The brand also used this as an opportunity to fine-tune the assortment by making product cuts. But perhaps the biggest change is in its packaging colors, which Marra desaturated and leveraged into category IDs, all of which the duo discusses in the podcast episode.

What are your thoughts on the new Linkin Park singer?Join us as Cory and Nick talk the state of music (and music-based movies!) and reminisce about their own musical journeys, from sneaking secular music past strict parents to reflecting on the impact of provocative pop culture moments like Britney Spears' iconic Rolling Stone cover. Nick opens up about his upbringing in a strict household and how it shaped his appreciation for various music genres. We also dive into the sky-high concert ticket prices for artists like Taylor Swift and Hans Zimmer and how millennials are prioritizing live music experiences over traditional milestones. Our conversation takes a nostalgic turn as we share unforgettable concert experiences with bands like Tool, Metallica, and the All-American Rejects. We debate the pros and cons of standing room versus seated events and laugh about our fashion faux pas at concerts. We also tackle the generational differences in music culture, examining how Xennials navigate their unique path between Gen X's traditionalism and Millennials' quest for flexibility and purpose. From dissecting the unwritten rules of concert attire to exploring the resurgence of early 2000s music among Gen Z, we cover it all with humor and insight. As we wrap up, we reflect on the evolution of bands like Linkin Park and the challenges of separating art from the artist in today's cancel culture. We analyze modern music trends and concert etiquette, emphasizing how Millennials stay engaged with new music while embracing older bands. Finally, we have a blast imagining the ultimate music festival lineup featuring fictional bands from movies and discussing the intricacies of music biopics. We talk about our different reactions to this film as adults (noticing a lot more of the dirty jokes and sympathizing more with Miranda than Daniel), strong connections to other films about dads faced with new responsibilities, the surprisingly non-villainous Stu, played to perfection by Pierce Brosnan, Sally Field's always rock-solid performance, our maximum adoration of Harvey Fierstein, the use of disguise and role-playing as a means to self-discovery throughout literature, and how this film, which handles the theme of children dealing with divorce so tenderly, was like free therapy to us in the 90s (and we're guessing to other Xennials as well). I was born in NYC, and now I live in Northern Virginia with a couple of big dogs, cats, my kids, and my husband, in a massive farmhouse in the middle of wine country. I'm an East Coast Army girl who married a West Coast Marine. Somewhere along the way I got old because apparently I've worked for the military and government for nearly 20 years - not sure how that is possible since I'm only 22. I don't do hobbies; my personality is too flawed to let me do anything ‘moderately'. So, I now have several full time ‘passions' that eat up my day - and I wouldn't have it any other way. Maleficent is my spirit guide, bossing is my daily, and relentless may actually be my legal middle name. I've never met an obstacle or challenge where I didn't say “hold my cocktail”, and I'm not about to start now. Reading is my one true escape from reality, so when the idea popped up that we could help put more stories out into the world - you better believe I said “bet”. Now, I'm using all of my 'talents' to take on the publishing industry with my besties at my back - Charlie's Angels style! Jackie: I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, so Pens and Stillers fan until the day I die. I joined the U.S. Army after some “lost” years at the University of Pittsburgh. The Army was probably the best decision I could have made for myself, and it took me to places all over the world, like Europe, southwest Asia, the Middle East, and all over the U.S. I am married to a southern boy (talk about opposites), I have a wonderful, creative, and compassionate daughter, and a stepson who loves to play baseball. I currently split my time between Northern Virginia and Florida (gotta be close to the Mouse) and always look forward to “down time” so I can enjoy a good beer and read a good book.

Generatieclash tussen Boomers, Millennials, Gen Z, Gen X, Gen Niks... Gen Dip? ☎️

Xennials are sandwiched between overly vaccinated millennials and grumpy Gen Xers. This episode takes a dig at millennials for their safe spaces and trigger warnings, while also criticising Gen Xers for being boring and cynical. A wise man once said, “All Good Things Must Come To An End”.  And that statement couldn't be more true when it comes to It Came From The 80s. On this final episode of the podcast Jay and Tony talk about what makes their Micro-Generation, Xennials, so special. Jay and Tony, like so many listeners, grew up in both an analog and digital world and have a unique perspective on life, technology, and the past that they discuss in detail in this final installment. Jay and Tony also talk about being the last generation to grow up in the “good old days”, and being amongst the first to grow up in the truly “modern world”. In addition to all this, the guys also have two special guest stars on this episode that can offer some unique perspectives on our hosts and maybe some insights for future generations. So whether you are a part of Generation X, you're a Millennial, or you fall somewhere in between, then this, the final episode of It Came From The 80s is made with much love and thanks just for you! It's all in good humor, of course, and today I'm sitting down with a well-known Gen Z'er and activist Gigi Robinson who's going to explain it all for us. And we get to laugh together. Because let's be honest—we Xennials don't always have the best rep either. A quick announcement that we're extending our Fall Break a little longer due to life and mental health concerns. We're both huge proponents of saying what you need and right now we (and Lauryn in particular) are acknowledging that we currently don't have the bandwidth to devote to the podcast to the degree we want and expect of ourselves and need to focus on other things in our lives, mental health in particular. We're hoping the extension will only be a few more weeks, but we don't want to set a date we can't be sure we can hit. Stay tuned here and on social media for an announcement of when we'll be back and hopefully some fun new ideas to expand the content we include in each episode. The elementary school kids in Stoneybrook have pen pals who live and attend school on a Zuni reservation in New Mexico. After a fire at the school and several homes in that community, Dawn is inspired to get the Stoneybrook community involved in some fundraising and donation drives in what could've been heartwarming, but ultimately just felt generally not great for us due to the communities involved and the book's inability to dive deeper and tell a better version of this story (although we acknowledge this might be another "be careful what you wish for" situation). This is on top of a few different culturally insensitive and downright terrible comments and situations from our kids that aren't really addressed as being bad. There are some fun notes - like the carnival in the Pikes' back yard - but this was another book we just wanted more from. Follow us! Instagram and Twitter: @generationbsc Contact us! Stacey's long-foreshadowed health emergency has finally arrives. After extended periods being super tired and very hungry and thirsty, Stacey finally admits how she's feeling and ends up in the hospital in NYC for two weeks. Her time there is helped by two visits from the Baby-Sitters Club, but severely hindered by her parents' inability to be in the same room and remain civil while Stacey insists she wants and needs them there together. Stacey ends up recovering and having a heart-to-heart with her mom (and then her dad off-screen) about how they are treating her and what she needs from them. Charlotte takes things poorly back in Stoneybrook, exhibiting clear hypochondria that Dr. Johansson somehow fails to properly understand. Follow us! Instagram and Twitter: @generationbsc Contact us!
