A few years ago, my friend Louis Gates taught me about the nine-year life cycle. It's an easy way to get what you want using the Law of Attraction. 9-year cycles begin the day you are born and repeat throughout your life. Happiness is as simple as paying attention to your cycle - and asking for what you want. In year 1, start asking for a new purpose in life. It will reveal itself in year 2. Your focus will tighten. Things start moving in year 3. You'll enjoy the changes happening in your life. You accelerate in the direction of your purpose in year 4. Years 5 and 6 are for evaluation. You decide to focus on only what is working in your life. Years 7 and 8 are about letting go. You begin to remove all clutter from your life. When 9 years roll around, your mind begins to ponder the next phase of your life. The process continues. Where are you in your life cycle? Learn more about your ad choices. Can one age with grace and wisdom? Yes, according to Andrew J. Scott, author of the Longevity Imperative, one of the six books on the Financial Times' illustrious short list for best business books of the year . For Scott, aging in the 21st century requires a sharp shift in both personal and public policy attitudes to “old age”. No, we can't live forever, he reminds us, but we do need to make the necessary social, political and economic adjustments to enable us to enjoy the increasingly longer lives most of us now take for granted. Rather than medicalizing old age, he argues, we need to normalize it so that its a central feature of, rather than an epilogue to, the good life. Wise words from one of the world's leading authorities on aging.Andrew J. Scott is the world's leading expert on the economics of longevity and on ensuring that our lives aren't just longer but also happier, healthier and more productive. An award winning researcher, speaker, author and teacher he is a co-founder of The Longevity Forum, co-author of the global bestseller, “The 100 Year Life,” and a professor of economics at London Business School, Scott's research focuses on the implications of longevity and his advisory work on helping individuals, non-profits, corporations, and governments to seize the benefits of a longer-living society.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. You can download your FREE report on how you can avoid financial mistakes as a dentist using the link just here >>> dentistswhoinvest.com/podcastreport———————————————————————Ever thought about how you'd plan your finances if you knew you might live to 103? We're having a good natter about just that, inspired by ‘The 100-Year Life' by Linda Gratton and Andrew Scott. Jon Doyle's got some eye-opening thoughts on how the idea that kids born in 2007 might live that long has completely changed the way he advises on long-term financial plans. We'll also have a chinwag about how your own family history and life experiences can shape what you expect from retirement—especially if you've got a bit more dosh than most. We'll then shift gears to chat about how adolescence now drags on into the late 20s or early 30s, and how that's making the usual milestones like marriage, buying a home, and retiring a bit of a squeeze. With everything getting a bit more complicated, we're talking about why it's time for a more flexible approach to financial planning. And here's the kicker—we're questioning that old idea of retiring at 60. If you're a dentist, or any other professional, staying active with phased retirement might just be the ticket. So, grab a cuppa and join us for a lively chat that mixes financial sense with the art of living well, sprinkled with a bit of wisdom from ancient thinkers and modern gurus.———————————————————————Disclaimer: All content on this channel is for education purposes only and does not constitute an investment recommendation or individual financial advice. In today's stultified American gerontocracy, not everyone is convinced that we should care about old people. After all, aging baby boomers still control most of the wealth and power in an increasingly divided & inegalitarian country. But, in contrast with many of today's age warriors, Andrew J Scott cares about the old. In fact, the 58 year-old British business school academic has built a career on fetishizing long life. His latest book is entitled The Longevity Imperative in which he explains how to build a better society for healthier, longer lives. It all sounds very reasonable, although I suspect that age will come to replace social class as the driver of political conflict in the 21st century.Andrew J. Scott is the world's leading expert on the economics of longevity and on ensuring that our lives aren't just longer but also happier, healthier and more productive. An award winning researcher, speaker, author and teacher he is a co-founder of The Longevity Forum, co-author of the global bestseller, “The 100 Year Life,” and a professor of economics at London Business School, Scott's research focuses on the implications of longevity and his advisory work on helping individuals, non-profits, corporations, and governments to seize the benefits of a longer-living society.Keen On is a reader-supported publication. Jelmer Ikink, Founding Partner of Foxmont Capital Partners, and Jeremy Au talked about three main topics: 1. Childhood Curiosity (Lehman Brothers & McKinsey): Jelmer shared about his childhood habit of walking around with his hands behind his back and asking questions. This deep-rooted curiosity translated into his academic life, initially pursuing finance for his undergraduate studies and law and diplomacy for his master's degree. He talked about his transition from investment banking at Lehman Brothers to McKinsey management consulting to entrepreneurial ventures in China and the Philippines. 2. Foxmont Founding Vision: Jelmer discussed how they decided on the name Foxmont Capital Partners after being inspired by the discerning nature of foxes as well as their regular meeting spots at the Fairmont and Raffles hotels. He highlighted Foxmont's commitment to nurturing the entrepreneurial landscape in the Philippines. He also talked about the success of their annual Foxmont Summit that convenes the founder ecosystem. 3. 10-Year Life Projections: Jelmer dove into the significant risk he took in deciding to move to Asia and away from a more certain career path. He used the technique of projecting himself ten years into the future to weigh where he would rather be and what stories he would like to have accumulated in his life. He acknowledged that while parts of the journey turned out better (and worse) than expected, he had intentionally chosen to be more mindful of his experience with fewer expectations of himself. Jeremy and Jelmer also talked about the future shifts in the Philippines' investment landscape, the country's macroeconomic growth and the role of luck in VC. Longer human life doesn't have to be the gloomy picture demographers have portrayed. Humans have diminished most early childhood diseases, and many middle aged fatalities. We need to live, learn, and work smarter for a longer period of time. We should look at the increasing lifespan as a longer middle age and plan for it. Andrew Scott takes us through how to approach having longer life ahead, from his book The 100 Year Life.

Mauro Guillén: The Perennials Mauro Guillén is Professor of Management and Vice Dean at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. An expert on global market trends, he is a sought-after speaker and consultant. He combines his training as a sociologist at Yale and as a business economist in his native Spain to identify and quantify the most promising opportunities at the intersection of demographic, economic, and technological developments. His online classes on Coursera and edX have attracted over 100,000 participants from around the world. He has won multiple teaching awards at Wharton, where his presentation on global market trends has become a permanent feature of over fifty executive education programs annually. His book on 2030: How Today's Biggest Trends Will Collide and Reshape the Future of Everything was an instant Wall Street Journal bestseller and he's now the author of The Perennials: The Megatrends Creating a Postgenerational Society*. Many of us grew up in a world where life was divided into three stages: school, work, and retirement. Traditional ways of thinking about credentialing and ways to transition in the workforce are also changing. In this conversation, Mauro and I explore what has changed and how we can shift our thinking and actions to stay relevant in a new world of work. Key Points The sequential model of life is no longer as relevant as it was a generation ago. Life span, health span, and technology are massively affecting how we think about generations. It's no longer a correct assumption that entry level positions are going to be only filled people in their twenties coming out of school. Intergenerational learning is an opportunity that many institutions and organizations still miss. Embracing this will increasingly help us stay relevant. Traditional credentials will still hold value, but it will be assessed in the context people's ability in learning how to learn. Intergenerational differences are real, they do not necessarily result in different values, attitudes, and behaviors in the workplace. There is lots of heterogeneity that our stereotypes conceal. Technological changes have economic impact. It's not just that technology allows more goods and services to be produced more efficiently and at greater scale. It's also that these changes disrupt previous assumptions about the conduct of human lives, human relationships, and the methods to save money to buy goods and services. A society in which people expect to die around the age of 100, or even older, needs to make different plans than a society in which people expect to die in their 70s.Some politicians, in unguarded moments, have even occasionally expressed a desire for retired people to "hurry up and die", on account of the ballooning costs of pension payments and healthcare costs for the elderly. These politicians worry about the negative consequences of longer lives. In their viewpoint, longer lives would be bad for the economy. But not everyone thinks that way. Indeed, a distinguished professor of economics, from the London Business School, Andrew J Scott, has studied a variety of different future scenarios about the economic consequences of longer lives. He is our guest in this episode. In addition to his role at the London Business School, Andrew is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research and a consulting scholar at Stanford University's Center on Longevity. His research has been widely published in leading journals in economics and health. His book, "The 100-Year Life", has been published in 15 languages, is an Amazon bestseller and was runner up in both the FT/McKinsey and Japanese Business Book of the Year Awards.Andrew has been an advisor on policy to a range of governments. He is currently on the advisory board of the UK's Office for Budget Responsibility, the Cabinet Office Honours Committee (Science and Technology), co-founder of The Longevity Forum, a member of the National Academy of Medicine's International Commission on Health Longevity, and the WEF council on Healthy Ageing and Longevity.Follow-up reading:https://profandrewjscott.com/https://www.nature.com/articles/s43587-021-00080-0Topics addressed in this episode include:*) Why Andrew wrote the book "The 100-Year Life" (co-authored with Lynda Gratton)*) Shortcomings of the conventional narrative of "the aging society"*) The profound significance of aging being malleable*) Joint research with David Sinclair (Harvard) and Martin Ellison (Oxford): Economic modelling of the future of healthspan and lifespan*) Four different scenarios: Struldbruggs, Dorian Gray, Peter Pan, and Wolverine*) The multi-trillion dollar economic value of everyone in the USA gaining one additional year of life in good health*) The first and second longevity revolutions*) The virtuous circle around aging research*) Options for lives that are significantly longer even than 100 years*) The ill-preparedness of our social structures for extensions in longevity - and, especially, for the attainment of longevity escape velocity*) The possibility of rapid changes in society's expectations*) The three-dimensional longevity dividend*) Developments in Singapore and the UAE*) Two important political initiatives: supporting the return to the workforce of people who are aged over 50, and paying greater attention to national statistics on expected healthspan*) Themes from Andrew's forthcoming new book "Evergreen"*) Why 57 isn't the new 40: it's the new 57*) Making a friend of your future selfMusic: Spike Protein, by Koi Discovery, available under CC0 1.0 Public Domain Declaration

The topics of aging and life extension are getting a lot of attention in the media. Sergey Young believes we are on the brink of a Longevity Revolution, with new scientific discoveries and exciting technological advances now making it possible to reverse aging and treat previously incurable diseases. In this episode, Sergey talks about how humans will be able to extend life to 150 years and beyond. In this discussion, Sergey and host Don MacPherson talk about what life extension will look like over the course of the 21st century, some of the remarkable healthcare innovations that seem like they are out of science fiction novels, and the societal implications of radical life extension. Born in the former Soviet Union, Sergey Young has made it his life's mission to help people live long, healthy, and happy lives. As part of that mission to make longevity affordable and accessible to everyone, he founded the $100 million Longevity Vision Fund, one of the few longevity-focused funds in the world. He is also an Innovation Board Member at the XPRIZE Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded Peter Diamandis, and Development Sponsor for the Age Reversal XPRIZE. Sergey's goal is to live to 200 years old and to find an affordable way for everyone else to do the same. Sergey is author of the book “The Science and Technology of Growing Young.”
Kurt and I have been married for almost 23 years and we're planning on another 50 to 75 together. We think, in terms of taking care of our bodies, minds and spirits and given the way technology is going, we could each live to be well over a hundred which gives us an amazingly long time to grow in love together and to contribute in so many other parts of our lives. Today's episode is about how we think about what I call, for shorthand “The 100-Year Marriage” and how you could think about it too. In this episode, we'll cover:Why you should think about the long-term plan for your relationshipThe areas of your life you should consider as you look at the next 50 or 75 yearsQuestions you can ask yourself and each other to help define your vision for long lives togetherResources that have helped expand my thinking about longevity and legacyAnd more. We need to age better. Rather than focusing on, ‘Oh, there are more old people,' I think we need to focus on, actually, given the phenomenal increase in life expectancy that has happened, we need to change how we age.”“We haven't really expected to reach into those older ages in the past. Of course, there have always been old people but it's been a minority living to 80 or 90. But if you look at the data today in most rich countries, it's the majority who will be living to 80 or 90. So, we need to age better and behave differently.” “You've got more time ahead of you. Whether you're 20, 50, or 80, you have more time ahead of you than past 20-year-olds, 50-year-olds, or 80-year-olds. So you have to invest more into your future. You just have a greater incentive to do it.” “The challenge you've got with a longer life is how to finance it.”Listen to the SuperAge podcast wherever you get your pods.
