Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest, Sonja Kostich In this episode of Dance Talk, host Joanne Carey chats with Sonja Kostich, the president and executive director of Baryshnikov Arts. Sonia shares her inspiring journey from her early years in dance, through her transition from a professional dancer to a career in finance, and ultimately to her current role in arts administration. The conversation highlights the importance of collaboration in the arts, the challenges of career transitions, and the innovative programming at Baryshnikov Arts that supports artists in their creative processes. Sonia emphasizes the value of taking risks and stepping outside of one's comfort zone to discover new opportunities in life and art. Sonja Kostich brings with her both the knowledge and experience of having been a professional dancer for over two decades as well as significant business acumen derived from her business education and time working at Goldman Sachs. Through a unique and successful professional trajectory, she now merges her artistic and business experience as an arts leader. Ms. Kostich was hired by Mikhail Baryshnikov at the age of 17 to join American Ballet Theatre from The School of Classical Ballet, the training school for ABT created by Mr. Baryshnikov, consisting of only seven female students and five male students. She later danced with the San Francisco Ballet and the Zurich Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project, and in multiple collaborations with opera/theater director Peter Sellars, before co-founding OtherShore, which she co-directed for six years. Her experience in ballet, contemporary, and modern dance resulted in a diverse international career that spanned across artistic disciplines.Upon retiring from dancing, Ms. Kostich returned to school, obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting and Business Communication from Zicklin School of Business, CUNY Baruch College, where she graduated Salutatorian at the age of 42. Following, she began a full-time position at Goldman Sachs in the Finance Division with a focus on regulatory capital requirements. Simultaneously she obtained an MA in Arts Administration, eventually returning to the dance world, first as the finance manager at Mark Morris Dance Group and then as program manager at New York City Center. From 2018 to 2022, she served as the Chief Executive and Artistic Officer at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, a 153-acre artist sanctuary located in Tivoli, NY, where she led the successful rebrand and revitalization of the 30+ year organization, bringing it to award-winning status for its significant artistic and economic contributions to the Hudson Valley. In October 2022, Ms. Kostich joined Baryshnikov Arts as its new Executive Director. As a female Korean American, born in Seoul, Korea, and raised in Minnesota, her history, both personal and professional, lends itself to cultivating and supporting new perspectives as Baryshnikov Arts expands its capacity to create multi-platform and collaborative havens for artistic expression, innovation and freedom and especially as we commit further to elevating and sharing the stories of artists of diverse cultures and histories. We had the pleasure of interviewing Little Monarch over Zoom video!Plenty of Time gives listeners a look inside Little Monarch, the bedroom-pop disco-funk hybrid brainchild of Casey Kalmenson. Recorded in her home studio in Los Angeles, CA, the collection of 13 tracks strung together in between tours and life on the road range from simple moments to introspective homesick yearnings. Plenty of Time features latest single and opener “We Got That Feeling,” a funky and slick track about capturing those special moments with loved ones that make the rest of the world fade away and turn good times into timeless memories. Atmospheric track “It's Like Music” describes the comforting feeling of listening to the ramblings of someone you adore. The cosmic self-love anthem “Sheesh” and radiant bass-driven single “Follow Your Majesty” both share a similar message of putting yourself first while celebrating your individuality. Elsewhere on the full-length is jaunty track “Bounce” that encourages you to go after what you want while “Same Old” bursts with warbly synths as Kalmenson speaks to being surrounded by the wrong kind of energy you need to be your best self. As Little Monarch, Kalmenson creates a truly unique listening experience, blending various elements into a cohesively contemporary yet retro sonic drive, and Plenty of Time is no exception to that.Recognized for her exceptional musical abilities, she has found viral success with hits including “No Matter What” and “Strike” which have quickly added to her over 41 million global streams and she has garnered praise from the likes of Wonderland, Ones To Watch, The Line of Best Fit, and Atwood Magazine among others. Her music can be heard in a variety of campaigns with brands such as Abercrombie & Fitch and Shiseido Cosmetics along with syncs for shows including Grey's Anatomy, Love Is Blind, and Love At First Lie. She is also an integral member of Gracie Abrams' band and played a pivotal role in the highly acclaimed Taylor Swift The Era's Tour in 2023, showcasing her exceptional talent on a global stage. Mike Schroepfer (Schrep) is the Founder & Partner @ Gigascale Capital, a new kind of climate-focused investment firm. Prior to Gigascale, Mike was the CTO @ Meta where he scaled products to billions of users, shipped millions of units of consumer hardware, constructed tens of millions of sq ft of data centres, built teams of up to 35,000, and made breakthroughs in AI. Before Meta, Mike led engineering at Mozilla and founded a company acquired by Sun Microsystems. In Today's Show with Mike Schroepfer We Discuss: 1. Lessons from Mark Zuckerberg and Meta: What are Schrep's biggest lessons from Zuck on truly effective leaders? Why does Schrep believe the best leaders are like music conductors? What does Schrep mean when he says, "building a company is a game of inches"? Why does Schrep believe "inertia is one of the most underappreciated forces in company building?" 2. The Future of Energy: Why does Schrep believe that the "availability of cheap, clean energy is the biggest rate limiter to human progress?" Does Schrep agree with Sam Altman that energy will be the currency of the next decade? Or does he believe Mustafa Suleyman is right and it will soon be free and abundant? How does Schrep predict the next five years for both fusion and nuclear? Why does Schrep believe the next few years will be "messy but with huge opportunity"? 3. Investing in Climate: It has to be Profitable: Why does Schrep believe that markets and not governments or philanthropy will solve the climate challenges we face? What leads Schrep to suggest that the climate change transition is a $10TRN opportunity for investors? What is the single hardest element of investing in climate change solutions today? Why do climate change solutions need to reshape how they market to consumers? How much capital does it take to build a defensible moat in climate? 4. Schrep: The Man Behind Whatsapp and Instagram: AMA: How does Schrep reflect on his own relationship to money? How has it changed? How does Schrep think about what it takes to be a great father? How did Schrep manage the physical stress and pressure of managing engineering for products that serve billions of people in WhatsApp and Instagram?

Futuromania: Electric Dreams, Desiring Machines, and Tomorrow's Music Today is a new book that traces the history of sounds that prefigure pop music's future.
In the Judeo-Christian tradition, God often makes Godself known through sound: be it a voice from a burning bush, a resounding clap of thunder or the blast of a trumpet. “God is revealed through sound,” affirms Ed Foley, O.F.M. Cap. “I think of a homily as sound theology,” he adds, “it's acoustic engagement.” When preparing to preach, Ed, the Duns Scotus Professor Emeritus of Spirituality and a retired professor from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, first writes his homilies word for word in poetic form. Then, he meticulously annotates his manuscript, like a conductor's score. “Where's the crescendo?” he asks himself. “Where's the pause? When do the trumpets come in?” Practice extends beyond the art of the homily, permeating life itself. It is, perhaps, a vital Christian practice as we enter the Easter season of Christ's resurrection. “The followers of Jesus practiced resurrection,” Ed says in his homily on “Preach” for the Mass of the Day this Easter Sunday. “Their dogged commitment to living an Easter spirituality and pass it on from one generation to the next, usually at great cost, is why we stand missioned to practice resurrection again today,” But, even though prudent preparation is necessary, there must always be enough room to veer from the script when you're standing in front of a congregation. “Improvisation is not shooting from the hip. We learned this from people, from standup comics, improvisation is taking what somebody gives you and doing something with it. It's preparation,” Ed says. “The text is not the performance, just like a script is not a play, a score is not music.” Read the Scripture readings for the Mass of the Day on Easter Sunday, The Resurrection of our Lord Get daily Scripture reflections and support “Preach” by becoming a digital subscriber to America Magazine “Preach” is made possible through the generous support of the Compelling Preaching Initiative, a project of Lilly Endowment Inc. Welcome to the Music Business Worldwide podcast supported by Voly Music. On this 'cast, MBW founder Tim Ingham is joined by Travis Rosenblatt, founder of the SaaS platform for A&R research and scouting, Meddling.Rosenblatt is a particularly interesting person to speak to because, by his own admission, he spends a lot of his time NOT consumed in his day job. This allows him the bandwidth to think deeply about the music business, its challenges, and where it might be headed in future.Meddling is very clever, gathering data from multiple touchpoints on new artists for clients that have included the likes of Republic Records, Kobalt, Columbia Records, and Atlantic Records. But as a SaaS platform, Meddling largely runs itself – enabling Rosenblatt's mind to wander toward various crucial topics for the modern music industry. On this podcast, Ingham asks Rosenblatt about Meddling – a bit – but their conversation also dives into PROs, DIY distribution, music's role on video platforms, and much more besides…The Music Business Worldwide Podcast is supported by Voly Music.

Sure, knowing your product or service is essential, but do you know how to develop and deliver that information in ways that your audience will remember, repeat, and respond to? If not, you're missing out, and so is your audience. In this episode, John Watkis offers several ideas on how you can accomplish this by making your speeches sound like music. Takeaways - How a speech is like music - Why are you would want to include a chorus - Where does the chorus go? - The value of using a hook - How to make a “boring“ subject interesting - Mistakes some speakers make - How do you respond to resistance - How to end your talk with power - A key to storytelling Resources - JohnWatkis.com - The Captivating Public Speaker on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJ8HRPWC
Hollywood had reason to be worried in 1941, not the least of which was the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese that December. Commercial television made its debut in July, giving the public a reason to stay home for entertainment instead of going to a theater. But, the output in Hollywood still gave us some top movies, including Citizen Kane. That movie didn't have an original song in it, and the nine films that featured nominated songs didn't become instant classics. Take a listen to the nominees from 1941 with host Jeff Commings, and decide for yourself if the controversy that surrounded the winning song was warranted.

Music, is the topic of discussion.
This episode asks what seems to be a simple question, “What does it mean to be progressive?” And while the answer for many people seems to be simple, when the perspective is changed, things get more complicated very quickly. It's the kind of question that B Dorm was built for. And an important part of the foundation that B Dorm is built on, is a love of hip hop and R&B. So in 2001 when Erick Sermon dropped (Just Like) Music it was the perfect blend, mixing the silky smooth sound of Marvin Gaye with the modern, raw sound of hip hop. It's a timeless jam and just one of many from what a lot of people consider the best time ever for hip hop. And as much as we love the old school jams, your hosts Don Elivert and Jehriko Turner ask the important question, has our love of hip hop continued to evolve too? Are too many people stuck on old jams and dismissing the new artists the same way the old heads dissed hip hop when we were coming up? It's an easy argument to fall into. The 1990s and early 2000s gave us BIGGIE, Nas, Wu Tang, Tupac and Dre. Jay Z, DMX and Snoop. But the current crop is every bit as talented with J Cole, Chance, Future and Lil Nas X pushing the art forward. So why don't they get the love? Why do so many people seem to think that hip hop hasn't evolved and gotten better? Has it? Has it progressed? And speaking of progress, we've all got to do better when it comes to recycling and taking care of the environment. We just had Earth Day, but that's not enough. And unless you're Bezos or Elon, you're stuck here on Earth with the rest of us, so clean up after yourself. If you can make every day 4/20, you can make every day Earth Day. It's a fun conversation and it's an important and interesting theme. What does it mean to be progressive? Does anyone ever think that they are regressive? Doesn't everyone think they are progressive in some ways? This is what it's all about. A smart, fun, educated conversation that doesn't take itself too seriously. This is the B Dorm podcast. Pour yourself something. #drinksexy. Every episode of The B Dorm Podcast is an entertaining and thought provoking experience that will make you laugh, and make you feel. The two hosts of this show are yet another year older. 25 is here and to celebrate we pick one song/album for every 5 years of our lives. While this episode was intended to be very brief, we found out that picking just one song or album is really hard. So, naturally we rattle off a ton of honorable mentions. Oh, and if you couldn't tell. We kinda like music. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/back-pocket/support
