Life can be A LOT...  Needless to say it's very easy to become overwhelmed by all of life's offerings & happenings.  Individually, I am trying to do my part in helping raise 3 kids, I write a 5 day a week blog & do a corresponding podcast, I coach a 10U travel baseball team, sit on the board of the Let Them Play Foundation and have somehow found myself as the world's number 1 footboard salesman & co-founder of a Silicon Valley startup tech company.

Progress vs. Perfection

Recently dove into a book called Mind Gym written by Gary Mack that explores the path to inner excellence... Ironically, I typically read motivational, success and psychology books then often relate what I learned back to the sports world and creatively think how a strategy or technique could be applied to that realm... The amazing thing is that whether you are a CEO of a Fortune 500 company or the coach of a 10U travel baseball team, the goal to get the most out of your employees and/or players is virtually the exact same. One of the things that Mack talks about in the early going is “progress not perfection.”  So often our progress is drowned out by our quest to be perfect and we fail to realize our radical improvements. From personal experience I can say that perfection is an unattainable fictitious goal that simply does not exist... Progress on the other hand is very real and easily attainable simply by putting one foot in front of the other. Many times throughout the course of my baseball career I would look at my stats and be dejected... My instinct would be to go out and hit 5 home runs in a single game which inevitably lead to trying way too hard thus receiving negative returns. After struggling in the 2nd half of the 2005 season, I began the 2006 season hitting .200 with 1 home run after the first month... Yet instead of trying to make up for 4 continuous bad months of baseball in 1 game, I simply focused on making progress each opportunity I had a chance to step onto the field. I created a point system that could measure progress based on little things I could do to ensure I was staying consistent in progress...  1 point for a hard hit ball, hit, rbi, run scored, stolen base or great play in the outfield... 2 for a double, 3 for a triple and 4 for a homer.. Each day I would shoot for 3 points which may not seem like much but if I went 0-4 with a strikeout, hard hit ground ball, line drive out and hit a ball that was caught at the warning track, instead of beating myself up chasing perfection, I would get my 3 points and recognize the progress that was actually made. Ultimately, in order to be able to truly move forward we have no choice but to let progress shun perfection...  -EB   P.S. Have you hopped on a Team GoHard Foot Reflexology Board yet?

Was coaching a double header baseball scrimmage a few weeks ago that started at 9am...  I got to the field about 8, opened up the batting cages, fired on the Iron Mike and then began tossing the boys some flips... After about 20 minutes of taking whacks, we went in, hit a rapid fire infield then played a quick game of this new innovative outfield drill called “3 FLIES UP.”

The Youth Baseball Edge Podcast with Rob Tong: Coaching | Drills | Strategy

Do you have a plan when you start your team? Or when you start a new season? Aside from what drills you want to run, what philosophies do you have for your team—or as Bo Ashabraner puts it, what philosophies do you enforce or tolerate? Bo is here to help us break down some things you may want to consider for your team or season in part one of a two-part interview. Plus Rob answers the Question of the Week about whether a 27-foot home indoor batting cage will be adequate to help a 9-10U hitter who's struggling. Had our 2nd baseball tournament with our 10U Let Them Play squad down in Arizona a few weeks ago... The team was put together with some friends of mine that all have kids around the same age. Although the boys are from all over the country and we have a good amount of Dad's that played professional baseball, this isn't any sort of super-team... We are extremely young and only had one official 10 year old on the team while the rest of the boys are still 8 & 9.  That said, these little dudes can play and gosh damn they compete for their asses off...  We were fortunate to win 2 very close games to start off the tournament and guarantee us the #1 seed for our side of the bracket... Going into the 3rd and final round-robin game, we knew we already locked up the best position for bracket play that we could, so we let all the young kids pitch & basically run the asylum. Good idea from a development standpoint but the other team took advantage of our inexperience and jumped all over us. Our boys hung in there and fought back but we were down several runs going into the final inning. Knowing our next game was immediately after this one and it was going to be a win or go home contest, I knew it was time to teach the little groms about the almighty and powerful force that has the potential to become any team's best friend... MOMENTUM. I gathered all the players in front of the dugout and although I'm not exactly sure how the speech went down, it sounded something like this... “Listen here young Go Hards, you dudes are getting WHACKED... These boys are absolutely destroying you. They brought you, kids, behind the woodshed and are giving y'all a good ole fashioned ass whooping…  But guess what?!?!?  I got some good news… This game actually doesn't mean anything as far as the standings for this tournament is concerned… NADA, ZERO, ZILCH.   That said, I also got a little harsh reality for you Go Hards… The next game is a DO OR DIE, contest boys, & I'm not ready to go home yet. Anybody know what time the next game starts???” “2pm Coach...”  “Wrong answer mini Stevie SuperSoft…” “Oh I know, I know!!!”  “Yes, small Sammy Savage...” “The next game starts RIGHT NOW!!!!!”  “EXACTLY!!!! I am not sure it's possible for us to come back in this one but that doesn't matter, we just ran out of innings... What does matter is that we are about to fire up the engine to the MOMENTUM TRAIN and once this thing gets on the tracks ain't nobody going to be able to stop it... Not this team and surely not the next. All we have to do is hop on this bad boy and it will not be stopped... Get in the dugout boys, grab your coconuts and pick out a whooping stick because we are about to unleash FURY. This locomotive is going to move FAST and we are about to go for a helluva RIDE dudes…  THE MOMENTUM TRAIN TO VICTORY TAKES OFF RIGHT NOW!!!!  LETS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!”  Sure as shit these little fuckers put up a 5 spot in the last inning of that game then pounded the next team for 5 more runs in the first inning of the next one and basically did not slow down until we ran into an absolute juggernaut in the championship game... Even then, we scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st off of the best 10U pitcher & team that we've seen. Of course, I was just trying to fire up the boys and they very easily could have gone down 1,2,3 after the speech, but once the first dude got on base and then the second kid reached base, the energy in the dugout was like nothing I've ever seen and it just absolutely steamrolled from there...  Sometimes we have a hard time quantifying and qualifying things that we can't physically see... Yet think back to all the great times in our life when things were really rolling and one great venture and opportunity so simply and easily led to the next...  That's the Momentum Express at full steam ahead. Sure we will have to stop at stations and we may get derailed from time to time,
