In honor of the 10th anniversary of the passage of the Women's Economic Security Act (WESA), which guarantees nursing rights for Minnesota workers, we are re-releasing our 2023 episode on Pregnancy and Pumping Rights.  In 2014, Gender Justice helped catapult the life-changing package of legislation known as the Women's Economic Security Act over the finishing line. In the decade since, the policies have been further strengthened, solidifying protections for pregnant and nursing employees, creating supports for parents of young children, narrowing the gender pay gap, and more. In this episode, Senior Staff Attorney Sara Jane Baldwin and Humphrey School of Public Affairs policy student Allison Glass discuss the law and its implications.  ""Our goal with every case we take is to improve the law and improve people's lives more than just one client. We can have all the great laws we want, but if they're not enforced, then there's no real change," says Senior Staff Attorney Sara Jane Baldwin. "So there's a lot of work to do, and we're ready to do it." Join us on Monday, May 13th to celebrate the 10th anniversary of WESA! • Time: 8 am – noon • Where: Minnesota Senate Building, Room 1200, at 95 University Ave. W. in St. Paul (a virtual option is available.) Visit the "Gender Justice" Website here and "Unrestrict Minnesota" here. The GJB is produced by Michael at www.501MediaGroup.com & Audra Grigus. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/genderjustice/message

Independent bookstores on the rise in Minnesota, each with a story of their own

Minnesota Now

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2023 4:42

Across Minnesota and the nation, new and more diverse independent bookstores have been popping up. In fact, for every independent bookstore that has closed since 2020, more than three new ones have opened, according to the American Booksellers Association. It's part of a continuing trend jumpstarted by the pandemic, and each of these bookstores has a story of its own.  When Josh Hames saw the storefront up for lease in West St. Paul, he knew it was perfect for a bookstore. It was late at night, and the lights on the side of the building illuminated the old brick building. He could see the tall ceilings through the windows.   “It looked like the cover to ‘Needful Things' by Stephen King a little bit,” he said.   Hames, 30, opened Other Skies Weird Fiction in 2022, just in time for his favorite holiday: Halloween. The store sells high-quality editions of horror, sci-fi and imaginative fiction. Hames has been collecting these genres since he was 14, but the pandemic shutdown really clarified that passion. “We all had time to reflect on, what are the things that we really, really like to do when we go out? And for me I found that, even before the pandemic, I would always spend all my time looking for books, at Goodwill, thrift shops, estate sales. I was always out there buying books, and I thought, man, that's really important, I want to be a part of that,” he said. It turns out, others do, too, and Hames said he's been blown away by the community of readers who share his interest. A couple hundred miles to the northwest, in Detroit Lakes, Minn., Amy Erickson was feeling the lack of a bookstore in her town. The closest one was about a half-hour away, ever since the local Book World closed. “And when they closed, I said, ‘I don't know that I can live in a town without a bookstore.' It just felt wrong somehow,” Erickson said. Erickson was a 49-year-old stay-at-home mother of three. When the pandemic hit and her husband suddenly stopped traveling for work, they had some big family discussions. “And I said, you know, if I don't do this by the time I'm 50, I'm probably never going to do it,” she said. “I don't want to live knowing that I there was something that I wanted to do and I could do and I just didn't do it.” In May 2022, she took a leap of faith and launched Bluebird Books. It's a family affair: Her three teenage kids are now all old enough to work in the store, along with some of their friends.   “I love being surrounded by books all the time,” she said. “My favorite thing in the world is when someone walks back into the bookstore and says, ‘You recommended that book to me, and I absolutely loved it. What else? What other recommendations do you have?' That makes my heart happy.”  Bluebird Books and Other Skies Weird Fiction are two of the 15 new independent bookstores that have opened in Minnesota since March 2020. That's a big rise, and it's in line with a regional and national trend. Carrie Obry is the executive director of the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association. She credits the rise in part to Bookshop.org, the website that lets people buy books online and shares the profit with indie bookstores. She says having that online platform has democratized the bookselling industry.  “There's just a whole new influx of wonderful much-needed energy and diversity coming through our ranks of bookstore owners,” Obry said. There are challenges, of course, for any bookstore: competition for customers' time and attention, accelerating rent rates in an industry prone to low wages and supply chain issues.  Former educator Mary Taris never expected to open a bookstore. When she got fed up with not seeing enough great children's books by authors of color, she started Strive Publishing in 2018. She quickly found the need was far greater than a one-woman publisher could address. After the murder of George Floyd, Taris said Strive publishing was flooded with people wanting to write their own stories. “The civil unrest was a huge contributing factor in me kind of doubling down on my mission to elevate Black voices,” Taris said. She looked for partnerships, and she found space in the IDS building in downtown Minneapolis, tucked among other retailers in the Black-woman owned Sistah Co-op. The tiny Strive Bookstore struggled for foot traffic following its opening in the fall of 2021, but still, Taris saw an impact. “When Black people come in, they're like, ‘Wow, this is for us,'” she said. “And I even get more people who are inspired to write, you know, when they come into the bookstore, and just, it kind of feels like, the more I can do in the book space, the more our mission can come alive.” Working with the Minneapolis Downtown Council, she's about to open a second location in the historic Young Quinlan Building on Nicollet Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is Saturday, June 2. The 4,000-square-foot space has gotten some pre-opening customer praise: “‘Oh, wow, this is so beautiful!' That's what I hear,” she said. Taris can't wait to use the space to celebrate authors and cross-cultural communication. Because whatever the path they take to get there, for booksellers, there's no better feeling than getting the right book into a reader's hands. The Next-Gen of Vietnamese Food with Shank & Bone's owner Han Tran

Not sure how many San Diego restaurants have a real, bonafide Shepard Fairey art piece—sanctioned by the artist, famous for his propaganda art like the Obey (Andre the Giant) and Hope (Obama) series—but Shank & Bone in North Park is one of them. So technically the Vietnamese restaurant is a pretty notable art gallery. Their pho sure is some art. So are their fish sauce chicken wings, salty and sweet. In our June “Best Restaurants” issue, Shank was named readers' choice for Best Vietnamese and my pick for Best Pho. And on today's podcast Han Tran comes on to share her story—how her parents came over as refugees from Vietnam. She grew up in City Heights, where her mom ran a bakery and cafe. “It was known for the strongest Vietnamese coffee in town,” she says. “Just rocket fuel. In our culture, the cafe scene is mostly men. Women walk in and the needle on the record scratches. But mom ran it. She's tough. Cafes are really popular in the Vietnamese community, but ours was different because we had good food.” Han was raised in this food culture, saw how much her parents worked. Nonstop. The restaurant was their life, their stable place in a new world. And so the daughter went to SDSU with not less than zero interest in running a restaurant, but running very fast the other way. And then her and her husband, Jay Choy, bought a sushi joint, Ebisu Sushi. “We had no idea how to run it,” she says. And yet they did, for 16 years. They opened Shank & Bone because they wanted to take the Vietnamese food Han grew up with, but crank it up, use better ingredients, bring the modern better-food ethos to dishes of her youth. And, well, she took some flak. Some in the Viet community went after her because of the Fairey artwork, which shows a Viet girl holding a gun with a flower in the end of it. “Vietnamese immigrants are all obviously anti-communism—so there was a rumor going around that some communist had come to North Park and opened this restaurant,” she laughs. “And the funny thing is, the image of the woman looks almost identical to a picture of my mom from the refugee camp.” She and her husband also took flak for the price of their pho—$17 when they opened, $20 now. The reason? They invested in better ingredients, and they crammed their broth with two, three times the amount of bones to ratchet up the flavor (thus why the pho is so good). They invested in artwork and a storefront right on University Ave. All things that cost money. Shank's done just fine now. People showed up, keep showing up. In “Hot Plates,” we talk about the impending sale of Stone Brewing to Sapporo U.S.A.; how the city is now starting to enforce permits for the parklets restaurants built during the pandemic, and how very few restaurants have even bothered to apply; and the arrival of Northern California's white-hot Filipino bakery chain, Starbread. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” David goes to a classic in North Park (Lucky's Golden Phoenix), Han professes her love for Mongolian Hot Pot; and I defend the honor of chain restaurants by naming one of my favorites for healthy meals (Tender Greens, run by San Diego chef Pete Balistreri). Go eat some pho. Noodles on the side (so they don't soak up too much of that broth, which is gold).

On July 5, 2016 a police officer shot and killed Philando Castile during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights. A jury failed to convict the officer. Still, Castile's legacy lives on in the people he inspired. --Feven Gerezgiher reports:Five years ago today, a police officer shot and killed Philando Castile during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights. A jury failed to convict the officer. Still, Castile's legacy lives on in the people he inspired. On Sunday, activists with Visual Black Justice led a theatrical performance created in response to his death. Participants marched along University Ave to the state capitol. They carried mock coffins, body bags, and tombstones engraved with names of victims of police brutality. Founder Athena Papagiannopoulos (Papa-gin-ah-polis) wants people to keep talking about policing, even when it's not on the news.“Don't wait until it's someone you love or someone you know, or someone you kind of knew,” said Papagiannopoulos. “We have to come out here in the streets for these families and make sure we're preventing this situation from happening to more of our loved ones.”After Philando's death, the Castile family created a foundation to support victims of gun and police violence. This evening, the family is hosting a candlelight vigil in his honor. To Castile's former classmate Adrian Perryman, the commemoration serves to keep public safety on people's minds.“I think doing something on the anniversary is a reminder, even if nothing has happened in the last week, last month, just keep that same energy that you had five years ago, and keep fighting until nothing happens like this, like what happened to George Floyd and other individuals in the community,” said Perryman.Castile was beloved by students in Saint Paul schools, where he was known to pay for their lunches when they couldn't afford it.In 2016, Perryman and other Central High School alumni created a college scholarship in Castile's name that has since funded four students. The scholarship is geared towards encouraging black men to pursue careers in education.
