Zan Dubin and I met in Frogtown beside the LA River and quickly dove into her long history of activism, journalism, and life hear in LA. Born Alexandra, she was nicknamed after a character from The Little Foxes.Zan arriving in Westwood in 1966 at age nine — and she's remained committed to both the city and the causes close to her heart ever since. Her dedication to electric vehicles began in 2002, when she and her then-husband bought a Toyota RAV4 EV. They became active in saving leased EVs from being crushed, founding Plug In America.“We were able to save about 800 cars that would have been crushed,” she said, and her activism hasn't stopped. Wearing a T-shirt that reads “Question Internal Combustion,” she embodies a lifetime of environmental commitment. But what of the posterboy of modern EV vehicles: The notorious Elon Musk?“I abhor Elon,” she said plainly. “I'm really sad and angry at everything that he's doing. However, I think an even greater and more imminent threat is climate change.” While she criticizes Musk's politics and behavior, she praises Tesla's engineering and the ever-growing charging network's reach.

This is the third in our weapons trilogy and it's about what happens AFTER the ultimate weapons have done their work: Apocalypse! The end of all things… This term comes from the bible, with the Book of Revelations which talks about what happens during the end of the world, but aside from the myth it's a pretty real concept- there are a LOT of ways the world can end and has indeed ended for various civilisations throughout history. If you want to go riiiiight back there were the different mass extinction events that ended almost all life a few times on this planet. In the history of humanity we have the fall of Rome, an event that was felt for almost 1000 years in Western Europe! It ended technological development, scientific research, the progress of culture, communication, trade, and production were shut down. Development atrophied and technology reversed and reverted. Meanwhile in Northern Africa, the middle east, South America and China advanced empires flourished, but that didn't stem the rot in Europe because there was little contact, communication or trade. There are other examples of this but that's the main one that comes to mind. Modern fiction is replete with a lot of different apocalypse and post apocalypse stories in many different forms (both natural, man made, and mythological). After the second world war the major influence was the idea of nuclear annihilation. A famous early example was On The Beach, a chilling film about American sailors on a submarine who survive the initial Apocalypse. They come to Australia in the Southern hemisphere and try and rally because life seems almost normal there, but when they travel back to the US to find survivors they learn everyone is dead that and the nuclear fallout will eventually even kill the people in the southern hemisphere down in Australia. The whole planet has an inescapable death sentence so all that's left is to choose how and when they will die. 20 years later 1979 famously gave us Mad Max! Which was a beginning of a whole genre of crazy low budget ultra violent deiselpunk post-apocalypse SciFi with muscle cars and torn leather. In this first movie it's pretty tame, we assume that society is slowly breaking down after an apocalypse but people are still keeping things going nevertheless. Max is a leather-clad highway policeman with a wife and child. Pretty soon though a road gang ends his little slice of normalcy and the Road Warrior is born. After that the world of the Mad Max films becomes more and more chaotic and alien, totally divorced from any connection to our present day society. This spawned many imitators, usually terrible but sometimes strangely amazing. What are some of your fave stories in the genre? The cover of this Quackcast is inspired by the 1985 Canadian film Defcon 4 (an image originally created in 1976 by Angus McKie). A Canticle for Lebowitz is a seminal story in the genre, about the preservation of culture and technology after an Apocalypse and how that can help rebuild things and that humans will inevitably repeat the same mistakes… Hell comes to Frogtown is an amazing and fun take on the dieselpunk post-apocalypse genre and definitely a fave of mine. But I think my faves would have to be The Day of the Triffids and The Kraken Wakes by John Wyndham. Often thought of as “cozy catastrophes” because even though the world as we know it ends and the characters have to re-adapt they do it in a very level-headed way and they find a new normal- that is actually one of the very few absolutely accurate and realistic takes on what happens during and after a real Apocalypse which is why I appreciate it so much: life goes on, it's not the same but you do what you can to make it that way. What do you think? A fan of Waterworld, Fallout, Terminator 2, The Walking Dead, The End, Radioactive dreams, Don't look up, something more fun or more depressing? This week Gunwallace has given us a theme inspired by The KAMics - Relaxed, the coolest of the cool. Kick back and let go to this breezy, slow track with a killer, bopping beat! Hey TapFam! Welcome to a special milestone - Episode 75 of The Taproom Podcast!
In a move that may destroy this podcast, Brandon and Steve give their instant reactions to the first Presidential #Debate2024, which appears to be the sixth-consecutive contest between Giant Douche and Turd Sandwich, thanks South Park. And nooowww...Hell Comes to Frogtown: In a post-apocalyptic world, women rule and men are judged not by the content of their character, but by the quality of their spermatozoa. Enter Sam Hell, a man with stronger swimmers than the US Olympic Team. A scavenger, drifter, and criminal-type, he opts to work with the government after he's captured, rather than face prison. His mission? To first rescue, then procreate with, a group of women who were taken captive by a race of Frogpeople. The human race needs more babies to survive, and only Sam Hell has the balls to save humanity. Is this setup stupid? Probably, but let's not got too teste. Hell Comes to Frogtown final grade: Steve maybe wasn't in a receptive mood for this one, but he calls this one "meh." Rowdy Roddy Piper misses as a leading man and bad #science knocks this one down several pegs. 2.69/5.0 Brandon This movie was ribbeting. Not a good movie, the nostalgia of a 1980s WWF icon and the low-brow humor hits in his soft spots. 3.45/5 Cocktail of the Week: Feeling Froggy? It Ain't Easy Being Green? Who knows... 1 oz vodka 1 oz Midori Melon Liqueur 1/2 oz Orange Liqueur 1/2 oz Coconut Rum 1 oz Pineapple Juice Mix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Strain over cherries in a frosted martini glass. Cocktail Grade: Brandon takes another shot at creating a cocktail. This one misses the mark, but it might be better if something about it were changed. 2/5 ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/support
In this episode Brian interviews Nick Herringshaw, a network leader in the Twin Cities area to talk about the ideas around Leading By Example Into the Harvest. Nick has been in Frogtown for the last ten years. In the shadow of the capitol, Frogtown is a mix of politicians and houseless people, and everything in between. Nick shares how Jesus called him to this area and the journey he's been on, developing a passion for relational evangelism. Nick embodies the truth that we can't outsource disciple-making to others. Leaders have to be just as engaged in disciple-making practices to remain fresh, sharp, and radical in faith.

We are no longer collaborating with Gabe James, who acted as DM for this chapter, and our support goes out to those hurt by their actions. ** After making a mess of things in Neon, Roman and Youngblood seek refuge in a local swampy town! Sam Hell (Roddy Piper) brings us right back to another fallout world to survive in. We never learn much of this alt world outside of a need to breed for manpower, there are wars and there was mutation. Hell has got a rep, and when he gets duped into enlisting into Med-Tech, things get interesting. His mission: procreate “Hell style.” He is being led into the wastelands by Spangle (Sandahl Bergman) who he might create a few sparks with – but this will definitely not be influenced by her dancing. Centinella (Cec Verrell) is handy along the way and always has time for a smoke. Looney Tunes (Rory Calhoun) will be giving out fatherly wisdom, or most likely, he'll just be shooting off some flares. But, in the darkness looms the mighty croak of Commander Toty (Brian Frank). Be warned! Or not. Dude seems to have a lot of weird things going on. RTS look for good times and possible employment in Frogtown. You think they need a couple of podcasting bartenders? Collin, La-Mar and Jeremy learn to avoid the three-snake dance. Bull (Nicolas Worth) is going to show us all the way of the chainsaw. “Shut your HOLLLLLLLLLE!”

We're joined by Brant Cox and Sylvio Martins of The Infatuation LA to break down their list of the Best New Restaurants of 2023. They dropped this list a couple of weeks ago now, and it includes some truly stellar spots that have graced the LA dining scene this past year, such as Donna's of Echo Park and Loreto of Frogtown. Brant and Sylvio walk us through their process for compiling this list. We learn about their favorites, honorable mentions that just missed out, and why some big names like Funke and Poltergeist didn't quite make the cut. We also talk food trends of 2023 - from the Great Martini Revival to the seemingly inescapable barrage of red sauce Italian spots flooding our timelines - and they look forward to 2024, discussing which upcoming restaurant openings have them chomping at the bit. First though, there are a couple of headlines in the food world I wanted to discuss, from LA's Al Fresco Program moving towards permanence to the closure of several big name restaurants. #154: We're returning to the LA River today, this time on foot, not by kayak. Host Brian De Los Santos and HTLA producer Victoria Alejandro headed on over to Frogtown to hang out by the river and hear from two members of the Fifty-One Miles team. That's a project led by landscape architecture graduate students at USC who set out to walk all fifty one miles of the river over 6 days in early August. We'll hear how that was both a fun way to discover all the surprises the river holds, and how hanging out by the river can provide crucial research points for its future. Guests: Hannah Michael Flynn, urban planning and landscape architecture graduate student; Nina Weithorn, ecologist, cartographer, and landscape architecture graduate student Be sure to check out Fifty-One Miles online at https://fiftyonemiles.com/ And if you missed our kayaking adventure, you can listen to that here: https://omny.fm/shows/howtola/navigating-the-la-river-its-activist-history-in-a
Isaac and Craig chat about the FrogTown Classic BMX days 2023 and listen to some oldschool BMX freestyle music.
On this Podcast we catch up with Clive Gosling, who was out in California last week visiting from the UK. Clive has just taken on a full time position at GT working with the brand directly in California and gives us a little insight on the job and his own history with GT that goes back to the 80s and 90s, in BMX and MTB, right up to current times, working with the likes of GT's Olympic Silver medalist Kye Whyte in the UK. Clive also joined photographer Kenny Hunter and I last weekend as we road tripped to Frogtown. We touched on the weekend and perhaps ideas for a Frogtown UK in the future. Paul Roberts joins us during the Podcast and talks about his own history with Clive that goes back to racing in London together in the 80s, the rivalry and both Paul and Clive being two of the guys that were part of the UK King of Dirt early days series during the Nationals, and some of the names that emerged from that series, including X-Games Gold Medalist Stephen Murray. It's always comedy having Clive and Paul together. Check it out.
Isaac and Craig chat with Todd Huffman - Co founder of Frogtown Classic BMX Days in Angles Camp, Ca.
Jordan and Shaprio sit down to discuss their food and vibe impressions of the new Beverly Hills Italian hot spot, Frogtown's long anticipated river adjacent burger banger, all the fast food cheese curds and butter burgers that don't yet exist in L.A., and the cookies that has taken over the country.
