Send us a textMidori Koyama ObituaryMidori was born in West Torrence, California on Dec., 27, 1930 to Masaichiro Marumoto and Asako Okuda.  Midori was raised in Southern California until age 11 at which time she and her family moved to Utah as part of the voluntary evacuation “option” of Executive Order 9066 during World War II.  After moving to Utah she attended schools in the Clearfield and Layton, UT area and graduated from Davis High School in Ogden, UT in 1950.  She attended Weber State College and worked at Hill Air Force Base.Midori's father was a judo instructor in the Ogden area.  At her father's judo dojo annual tournament in 1960 she saw George Koyama, a judo instructor from Nampa, eating lunch.   She grabbed the teapot out of her mother's hand and walked over to serve him tea and the rest as they say is history.  They were married in 1962 at which time Midori moved to Nampa where she and George set up their home and started a family. One of Midori's passions was supporting education and working with children.  She began working for the Nampa School District in 1970 and worked at Lincoln, Kenwood & Centennial elementary schools.  Midori was part of the inaugural staff of Centennial school when it opened in 1976 and worked there until her retirement in 2004.  She served as an instructional aide and librarian during her 28 year career at Centennial.  At one point as librarian at Centennial she got the idea of selling pencils and origami cranes to raise money to buy books for the library.  The idea was so successful she continued and expanded her product line.  Kids at the school would save up their coins to make a purchase at “Mrs. Koyama's School Store” every week.  While no official tally exists, she raised thousands of dollars used to purchase books for the library.  Because of that work and her dedication, a section of the Centennial School library was dedicated in 1995 as “Mrs. Koyama's Book Garden” an honor in which she took great pride.  She volunteered at Centennial after retirement and continued to raise money for the school through her store.Another passion of Midori's was sharing and educating others about Japanese culture and the experiences of the Japanese Americans during WWII.  Before leaving California Midori's father, in fear of retribution and racism, piled many of the family's Japanese possessions in a heap to be burned.  Midori secretly pulled a favorite story book of historic Japanese heroes and hid it inside her belongings and took it to Utah unbeknownst to anyone in the family.  Perhaps spurred by that and other similar childhood experiences she wanted pass along her culture and experiences to future generations.  For many summers she held Japanese language classes for local area children.  She also presented information to many local school classes about her WWII relocation experience.Midori passed away due to a brief and sudden illness on Sunday, June 12, 2011.  She is survived by her husband, George.  She is also survived by her son John, daughter-in-law Joyce, and 3 grandchildren - Kristina, Jackie and Mason Koyama all from Sacramento, CA.  Her surviving brother and sisters are Hiroki Marumoto of Layton, UT; Yukari “Vicky” Mikesell of Belmont, CA; Bill Marumoto of Westminster, CA and Seiko Kikuta of Eugene, OR.  She was preceded in death by her parents.                Support the show

Before the advent of cardboard boxes, wooden crates were used to pack apples, pears and other iconic fruits of the Northwest to ship across the region and the nation. Up until the 1950s, the crates were adorned with elaborately illustrated labels bearing the name of the orchard that grew the fruit packed inside. These fruit crate labels reflect the histories of the growers, distributors, printers and artists involved with them from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. As such, they’re coveted by collectors across the Northwest and country, as the Capital Press recently reported. Carlos Pelley is an archivist for the Yakima Valley Libraries. Mike Doty is a volunteer curator at the Yakima Valley Museum and a longtime fruit crate label collector. Thomas Hull is also a collector, and a history teacher at Davis High School in Yakima. They join us to talk about the history of the labels, which have fostered a community of collectors in the Pacific Northwest.

Are You Exercising Wrong? with Dr. Gains – The MOVEMENT Movement with Steven Sashen Episode 191 with Michael Kamalu Michael Kamalu has been an avid multi-sport athlete since he was 3 years old, excelling in basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, and track (high jump & hurtles). He was a starter for the basketball and football teams for Davis High School, taking second in state (6A) in both sports his junior year, and continues to play competitive sports to this day. Michael started weightlifting 6 days a week when he was 14 years old. From the very beginning, he was intent on studying exercise-science, including the anatomy and biomechanics behind each lift and the various strategies and nuances in targeting each muscle, in order to optimize his physical fitness and athletic capabilities. Others soon began coming to him for tips and advice, and so he started informal personal training before even entering high school. As Michael's training and experience continued to grow throughout college and into medical school, he developed the unique ability to take new, academic knowledge of physics, physiology, neuroscience and anatomy, and apply it physical fitness and weightlifting. Combining that with his capacity for innovation, he started creating new and better ways to train, and developed dozens of novel techniques. Yet, due to his perpetual participation contact sports, Michael was constantly getting injured - many of which became chronic and even required surgery, including a torn labrum in one shoulder and a rotator cuff impingement with biceps tendinitis in the other. Not wanting to undergo months-long recoveries, yet understanding that his normal weightlifting routines would only aggravate his injuries, Michael started developing hundreds of additional techniques, modifications to common exercises, and even completely new lifts that would allow him to continue to train and build muscle, while not only avoiding aggravating existing injuries, but actually rehabbing them and strengthening the joints to prevent any future injury. Then, after becoming frustrated with the lack of high-quality and scientifically accurate content he saw among "fitness influencers," Michael decided to share what he had with the world. What you can now find and benefit from in the "Dr. Gains" programs is the cumulative result of all of Michael's unique and extensive experience, personal training, scientific education, and creative ability. Additionally, his experience and success managing people as a business owner gives him the unique ability to understand his clients' wants and needs, and to convey his knowledge and training material in a way that they can understand and implement in their own lives. Rather than just telling them WHAT to do, he teaches them HOW and WHY they're doing each exercise, empowering them to customize the content in his programs according to their specific situations and goals. There's truly nothing else like it in the industry! Listen to this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement with Michael Kamalu about how to exercise correctly using Dr. Gains. Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - How many fitness influencers who claim to have natural results often use performance enhancing substances or have exceptional genetics, leading to unrealistic body expectations for others. - Why these unrealistic expectations hinder people from starting their fitness journeys. - How many fitness practices can lead to problems and injuries. - Why working muscles the exact same way each time can lead to imbalanced muscle growth. - How understanding the underlying anatomy of muscles helps analyze and customize exercises. With a legacy steeped in musical education and mentorship, Steve brings a wealth of experience to Harmonic Winds, shaping it into a symphonic force to be reckoned with. Under Steve's expert guidance, Harmonic Winds of Utah embraces a diverse repertoire that traverses genres and emotions. From exuberant overtures to soul-stirring ballads, their performances transcend boundaries, leaving audiences spellbound. Steve's tenure at Davis High School serves as an ever-present source of inspiration, as his dedication to nurturing young talents laid the foundation for the ensemble's success. The resonance of Harmonic Winds reaches far beyond Utah, captivating listeners with their sublime harmonies and impeccable artistry. Steve Hendricks' influence infuses the group with a commitment to excellence, mirroring his transformative impact during his time at Davis High School. As Harmonic Winds of Utah continues to grace stages and touch hearts, their music stands as a living testament to the harmonious legacy Steve has cultivated, solidifying their place in the annals of musical brilliance.         "(KUTV) A popular and talented band director is stepping down after 30 years of carrying the baton. He spent 28 of those years at Davis High School. "It's pretty crazy," Steven Hendricks said. " It seems like yesterday that I started." Hendricks started teaching at 24 years old at Carbon County High School in Price. Two years later, he came to Davis High where one principal gave him the nickname "the Band Man." "He never once referred to me by name; it was always, 'Oh, there's the band man,'" he recalled. Since then, Hendricks' band has won hundreds of awards and performed in the Rose Bowl. The pinnacle of his career just happened this past November when he and 300 of his students traveled to New York City to perform in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. "It's such a unique experience and such a wonderful opportunity," Hendricks said. "Performing on that big of a stage in front of 60-million people on TV worldwide really sets your program apart." But as wonderful as his experiences and awards have been, for Hendricks it all boils down to being an instrument in changing kids' lives. "He's an amazing guy," said Emma Blake, one of his students. "His mission is to not only help us be good musicians, but better people as well," said student Robert Twogood. According to Hendricks, that's where you measure success. "It's the kids. It's knowing that you provided a place for them that is safe place where they could make friends," Hendricks said. That's why it will be so difficult for this "Band Man" to say goodbye. "I've put in a lot of hours here and I've taught thousands of kids," he said. "I guarantee you I will be shedding a lot of tears." Hendricks plans to continue teaching music in a different kind of way through band clinics and do some competition judging as well. His last day will be the on the last day of classes in June." We reminisce today about the NBA in the early 2000s, how to continue learning as a coach and why the weight room is a great place for basketball players. I had some technical difficulties with this recording, so I apologize in advance. Thanks for the listening to the podcast and I hope you enjoy our convo. Barton speaks on how to create lasting habits, surrounding yourself with positive, high-performing people who can help you level up, and his thoughts on the  first 12 months of the Mindset Forge Podcast.  27 episodes in, Barton also talks about the future of the podcast and challenges the listener to implement ONE new habit the right way. Backstory about Barton:Barton lives in Austin, TX with his wife Valerie and their 7 year old son, Jack.  Barton's been a personal trainer for 13  years.  Barton and his family love outdoor hikes, traveling, and living a healthy lifestyle.  His background in the arts, sports, and working in Africa all inform his unique perspective.  Barton hung up his basketball shoes after high school and decided to pursue music; specifically vocal performance.  He never sang at Davis High School, but when he arrived in San Diego, CA for college, he went for it! Barton sang in operas like "Marriage of Figaro" and "La Boheme," took acting classes, and performed a solo concert to receive his BA in Music.  Before graduation,  he spent a year in Aix-en-Provence studying French and traveling Europe and North Africa.  Barton's two trips to Morocco instilled in him a curiosity and profound respect for the diverse cultures of  West Africa.  Once back in the US, he applied for the Peace Corps so he could travel back to Africa and immerse himself in the culture and learn about their way of life.  Barton spent two years in Diadjibine, a small village of 2,500 people in Southern Mauritania, West Africa.  As a Peace Corp volunteer, he taught English, helped build water pumps, and started a solar-powered computer center.   The time in Mauritania shaped Barton's mindset on the importance of community, teamwork, leadership, and supporting hard-working people who don't have the resources Americans have at their fingertips.  After Peace Corps, Barton moved to New York City to pursue singing and acting.  He was accepted into the Maggie Flanigan Studio and spent two years studying Meisner technique and writing a one man show about what he learned as a Peace Corps in West Africa.  His show opened up new doors for him and he performed it around the country.  On one of his trips, he traveled to Austin, TX where he met Valerie.   Barton moved to Austin after graduating from the Acting Studio and four months later, they were married.  When Barton moved to  Austin in 2007, he became a personal trainer.  concurrently, Barton created  a voluntourism company taking people to East and West Africa to do volunteer work and enjoying Safaris.   He was introduced to Camp Gladiator in 2012 and his love for performing and passion for fitness made Camp Gladiator a perfect fit.  He sold his tour company and went all in to his new role with Camp Gladiator.  The Mindset Forge Podcast is Barton's  newest passion. Barton hopes the podcast will  help  people  find the tools and inspiration to go after the things in life that matter most to them.  He deliberately chooses guests from a variety of athletic and artistic backgrounds to help listeners gain multiple perspective of how they show up big for performance and how we can too.  Join Premium: https://themindsetforge.supercast.techMantra Labs Hydrate: to go  http://GoMantraLabs.com  and use MINDSETFORGE to get 25% off your entire order.  IG: @mindsetforgepodcast or @bartonguybryanNEW  Website: https://www.podpage.com/the-mindset-forge-podcast/

Most people who play period instruments like viola da gamba and baroque violin start their training using the modern versions of those instruments and ultimately stumble onto their Baroque ancestors. Usually they are adults, often training as musicians in college or working as professionals. But thanks to a unique and groundbreaking program founded by Angelo Moreno at Davis High School in Davis, California, students at the public high school can perform on period instruments using gut strings and baroque bows. Mr. Moreno established the DHS Baroque Ensemble, the first group of its kind at the high school level in the USA. As the group prepares to go on its third European concert tour, Angelo Moreno spoke to Suzanne Bona from the studios of Capital Public Radio in Sacramento.
