Chico State University is the agricultural college that I almost went to.  I have told the story on the show before, but in today's interview I finally get to verify!  As it turns out, CSU Chico would have been a fantastic place to study agriculture.  It is in a great part of California, has a great climate and has an outstanding school farm with the opportunity to learn multiple different aspects of livestock, permanent crop and row crop agriculture.  And, it is a very affordable university, especially by California standards. From picking a new name to burning her belongings and spying on new members, Dr. Janja Lalich did not foresee how her life would dramatically change as a budding feminist in the 70s. Like many others, the Democratic Workers Party, a cult she joined through a study group, first appealed to her political interests. Alternative religions and occult groups have been present throughout modern history. While the number of people in cults globally is unknown, experts estimate that there are up to 10,000 cults in the United States. Even though most cults are religious, cult is a term that doesn't refer to religion at all. In this episode, we break down what cults are and how prevalent they are in our societies? We'll look at the dangers of cults and how they swell into large, powerful groups. Without physical restraint of freedom, how do cults trap their members with mental shackles, fear, and abuse, and more importantly, what are effective ways to help members exit a group and not feel traumatized when they start to live again in the outside world? Featuring policy and advocacy insights from experts: Dr. Janja Lalich, Professor Emerita of Sociology, California State University Chico and Founder of Cult Research and Information Center, Dr. Steven Hassan, Founding Director of Freedom of Mind Resource Center, and Dr. Suzanne Newcombe, Senior Lecturer in Religious Studies at the Open University and Honorary Director of Inform, King's College London. -- Finding Humanity is a production of Humanity Lab Foundation and Hueman Group Media. A number of unique factors this year combined with long-term trends to create the devastating and unprecedented fires of 2020. But a major reason for the massive scale of the destruction is that natural fires and burning practices first developed by Indigenous people have been suppressed for generations. Wildfires are essential to many Western ecosystems, restoring nutrients to the soil, clearing decaying brush, and helping plants germinate. Without these fires, vegetation in woodlands, grasslands, and chaparral shrublands accumulates, so more fuel is available to burn, especially when a megadrought keeps drying out the fuel, year after year. A debt to the landscape starts to mount, and when it comes due, there is hell to pay. “If we’re not using fire in the same way that this landscape evolved with over millennia, then we could be creating a situation where we’re creating a further imbalance,” said Don Hankins, an environmental geographer at California State University Chico and a Plains Miwok Indigenous fire practitioner. 1. How To Avoid Exacerbating Dawn Phenomenon [35:46] Donna says: Hi, Robb & Team, I've been about 90% Paleo (sourdough bread occasionally, some dairy) since mid-March, and overall I've felt a lot better.  My meal routine worked fine right through summer. In fall, I ran into a problem.  My blood sugar is generally highest first thing in the morning, before I've eaten anything, and this seems to be due to 1) burning through my dinner calories by around 5:00 a.m., now that it's colder and I've resumed weight training at my gym; and 2) the dawn phenomenon, assuming this is a real "thing," where glucose gets poured into the blood in preparation for waking up. Some research turned up the suggestion of eating 4-6 ounces of a slow-digesting food 30-60 minutes before bedtime to prevent a big blood-sugar drop in the early morning.  Do you know whether this works?  If it does, would you suggest a protein (nuts), or more of a complex carb (dried fruit)?  Or would you recommend an entirely different strategy? Thanks, Donna   3. Salad Dressing w/ Sunflower Oil? [40:52] Kate says: Hi Robb and Nicki, I really enjoy your podcast and find it to be both informative and entertaining. I have recently been using Tessemae salad dressing which is supposed to be Whole30 approved but I noticed it was made of high oleic sunflower oil. Is it a problem to consume this oil and if so, what would be a better salad dressing option that contains more omega 3? I believe the high Oleic sunflower oil is lower in polyunsaturated fats and omega 6 than normal sunflower oil but should it still be avoided?   4. Glucose Tolerance Test in Pregnancy [52:29] Whitney says: Hi Robb and Nicki! Been listening to you for about a year now. Love the show! Been gluten free for 10 years (Celiac) and Paleo-ish for about 4. I'm pregnant with my first child and nearing the point where I need to take the dreaded glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes. I was floored when I found out it consists of drinking 50 grams of sugar on an empty stomach, and if you fail that test, you have to come back and do the same thing with 100 gram of sugar!!!! As someone who avoids sugar and keep my carbs in check this makes my stomach turn. I bought a cheap glucometer and have been monitoring my blood glucose for about a week in hopes the OB/GYN will take that as a replacement for the glucose test. On a broader level I wanted to get your general thoughts on this test. In my mind, this test for gestational diabetes is probably giving people diabetes! Am I making too big of a deal about a one time glucose test? I'm thinking its time for an update to the guidelines here, and surely there has to be a better way to test for gestational diabetes. Fasting insulin maybe? Some sort of HOMA score? I just think it's ridiculous that our health system is forcing all pregnant women to ingest 50-100 grams of sugar in one go! Would love your thoughts. Thanks for all you do! Whitney https://lilynicholsrdn.com/dealing-with-gestational-diabetes/   5. Grass-Fed Beef & Nutrition [59:10] Sofia says: Hi Robb, Thanks for everything you're doing for the planet!  It's really important work and I notice and appreciate you. I wanted to address something you said the last time I heard you on a Podcast....can't remember which one, I listen to so many. When you got to the question around nutrition you claimed that there really are no health benefits to eating grass-fed beef or dairy over conventionally raised, feed-lot animals. Are you aware that grain fed cows don't produce K2, a critical nutrient and the hormone necessary for escorting calcium out of the blood supply and into bone.  I could be wrong, but based on my research your claim that there is no notable difference between the nutrient density of the two animals is false.  Please reference Dr. Kate Rheaume-Bleue's book, Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox if you're curious about learning more.  If what she says is true, then the transition from grass-fed, regenaritive beef production to the feed lot, grain finished model could correlate to the rise in arteriosclerosis in the States and Europe.  Don't you think? Thanks again for the work you're doing! Lovingly, Sofia   Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Joovv. It’s a warm September evening in 2014 in the wooded hills of Butte County in northern California. Flames and smoke fill the sky as a car burns. Inside the car is the body of 25 year old California State University Chico student Marc Thompson. Marc is a brilliant young man, a psychology and sociology student, a human rights activist and a man friends will describe as an old soul, poetry in motion, and a person who made everyone feel welcome. Someone murdered Marc at the beginning of his future, a future in which he wanted to be a professor, he wanted to be the change in the world. So how does does such a life end in such tragedy? It’s one of those mysteries, one of those painful realities that too many people will face int his world. Adding depth to this mystery is the question about whether or not Marc’s murder was racially motivated. Marc was an African American man living in a predominantly white area in northern California. His murder remains unsolved. For complete show notes visit: https://bitterendingspod.com/podcast/marcthompson

Soil is the most important answer to climate change, and also one of the most underappreciated. Without soil, we have no food, and I don’t think I need to elaborate on how catastrophic that would be. The positive news is that we can work on our soil integrity right now to preserve it for many future generations to come—you might be surprised that using regeneratively raised cattle is part of that solution. There is still hope for our children and grandchildren to inherit a balanced and beautiful planet with abundant food production. Because we rely on soil for food production, big companies are starting to pay attention to the work that needs to be done to preserve it. My guest on this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, Tom Newmark, is helping them understand what they can do and how to get involved in saving our soils. Tom was CEO of the dietary supplement brand New Chapter, which was acquired by Proctor & Gamble about seven years ago. Since that time Tom has focused on environmental activism with specific attention on regenerative agriculture. He is the co-owner of Finca Luna Nueva Lodge, an organic and biodynamic farm and ecolodge in the mountainous rainforest of Costa Rica that teaches regenerative agriculture. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

This episode began out of a query that I see repeated endlessly in online parenting groups: “My child has a really strong preference for me.  They get on great with the other parent (usually the father, in a heterosexual relationship) when I’m not around, but when I’m there it’s all “Mommy, Mommy, Mommy!”  This is destroying my partner; how can we get through this stage?” So that’s where I began the research on this question, and it led me down quite a rabbit hole – I’d never thought too much about whether mothers and fathers fulfill unique roles in a child’s development and while it isn’t necessarily as prescriptive as “the mother provides… and the father provides… ,” in many families these roles do occur and this helps to explain why children prefer one parent over another. (we also touch on how this plays out in families where both parents are of the same gender). My guest for this episode is Dr. Diana Coyl-Shepheard, Professor at California State University Chico, whose research focuses on children’s social and emotional development and  relationships with their fathers. And on the other items that are discussed in this episode: Find more info on the Finding Your Parenting Mojo membership group here (https://yourparentingmojo.com/membership/) Sign up for the FREE Tame Your Triggers workshop here (starts July 8th!) (#) (Introduction added after the episode was recorded and transcribed): Before we get started with today’s episode on the unique role of fathers in children’s development, as well as why children prefer one parent over another, I wanted to let you know about three super cool things that I’m working on you. The first is about my membership group, which is called Finding Your Parenting Mojo. I don’t mention the group a lot on the show because I don’t like over-selling, but a listener who was in the group the last time I opened it to new members told me she actually didn’t know I had a membership group, so I’m going to tell you a bit more about it this time around! The group is for parents who are on board with the ideas you hear about on the podcast based in scientific research and principles of respectful parenting, but struggle to put them into practice in real life. So if you find yourself nodding along and saying yep; I agree with the whole ‘no rewards and punishments’ thing and I’m on board with working with my child to solve the problems we have, and I really want to relax a bit around my child’s eating, but on the other hand you’re thinking: but rewarding with story time is the only way I can get my child to brush their flipping teeth, and how do I even get started with working with my child to solve problems? And if I ever did relax around my child’s eating then all they would eat is goldfish and gummy bears, then the group is for you. We spend a month digging into each issue that parents face – from tantrums to figuring out your goals as a parent and for your child to getting on the same page as your partner (and knowing when it’s OK to have different approaches!)…raising healthy eaters to navigating screen time and supporting sibling relationships; we cover it all. I’ll open the group to new members in July, and it closes at the end of July and on August 1st we start digging into our first topic, which is reducing the number of tantrums you’re experiencing. The cost for the group is $39/month this time around which is locked in for as long as you’re a member - I increased the price from last time, and I may increase it again next time the group reopens. Or if you sign up before July 18th, you can pay for 10 months and get the last...

For fitness and Paleo Diet aficionados—and perhaps regular STEM-talk listeners—Robb Wolf is the type of esteemed guest who needs no introduction. Many people already know him by his best-selling book, “The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet,” (http://amzn.to/2gB6N4c) or his top-ranked podcast by that same name. (http://robbwolf.com/podcast/) But what some people may not know is that Wolf also started the world’s first cross-fit affiliate gym; that he’s raising his young daughters on a paleo diet—which may account for their mouths having a similar phenotypical expression as hunters and gatherers; and that nicotine—yes, nicotine—can actually be good for you (just not delivered by cigarette) in some contexts. STEM-Talk Host Dawn Kernagis and IHMC Founder Ken Ford talk to Wolf about these and other fascinating insights in this episode. Wolf hailed from a relatively unhealthy family, which pushed him towards discovering good health on his own terms. A keen interest and aptitude in science (he was a biochemistry major at California State University-Chico) set Wolf on the path of evolutionary medicine. He began thinking seriously about pre-agricultural diets in response to his mother’s poor reaction to her consumption of grains, legumes, and dairy. Since that time, Wolf has become an expert, researcher, and self-experimenter of the Paleo Diet. His expertise has led him to become a review editor for Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism; co-founder of The Performance Menu, a nutrition and athletic training journal; and co-owner of NorCal, one of Men’s Health magazine’s top thirty gyms in America. He is also a consultant for the Naval Special Warfare Resiliency Program. Wolf recently gave a lecture entitled “Darwinian Medicine: Maybe There IS Something to This Evolution Thing” at IHMC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qga4A3vnXmg 2:10: Dawn reads iTunes review entitled “No Bro Science Here” from someone nicknamed “Leafy Sweets:” “Science-based interviews with experts, post-docs and department/lab heads on relevant topics. No Bro Science here!  Interesting discussions relevant to one’s well-being and interests.” 3:46: Dawn welcomes Robb and Ken. 4:10: “I was raised by two well-meaning, but quite ill parents. Both of them smoked, neither of them exercised, both of them developed Type-2 Diabetes pretty early in their lives, and I’m not really sure why…but somewhere along the line I suspected that if I ate better and exercised, that I could maybe have a better outcome.” 5:00: “They really kind of acquiesced all their health to the medical establishment, and I went just as opposite that vector as you can possibly imagine.” 5:30: “I had a pretty good interest in science in general… I got into an organic chemistry class (in high school) and loved it like I had never loved anything before, and actually discovered that I had an aptitude for spinning molecules in my head and thinking about bonding and stuff like that.” 6:55: After his degree in biochemistry, Wolf considered medical school, but he had some personal health problems. That’s when, “The evolutionary approach to health/medicine got on my radar.” 7:28: Plus, he says, “Academia seemed to move at glacial speeds.” “Around 2000-2001, I found this weird thing called Cross-fit. I opened a gym, and it happened to be the first cross-fit affiliate in the world, and I opened a second one (the fourth in the world) … That was kind of the medicine that I wanted to practice. I got to talk to people about sleep, food exercise; and build community.” 9:15: Wolf describes his entry into evolutionary medicine: He was vegan, he was not sleeping and he had moved to Seattle, into a tiny basement where he didn’t see the sun for several months. He had a lot of gastro-intestinal problems, as did his mother, whose rheumatologist told her she was allergic to grains, legumes and dairy. 10:47: Around 1998, Wolf learned about the Paleo Diet through the work of Arthur D...

Energy: A New Take on Wood and Water In this double-header, Simon Love interviews two companies implementing innovative sustainable energy technologies.  The episode touches on sustainable projects in urban versus rural environments, how to work with local government and communities, and where these technologies are headed. First up is Bill Kelly from Lucid Energy, a startup that is creating usable energy from gravity-fed water systems. Bill opens up about the realities of innovating in a tightly-regulated environment. Bill shares his tips for innovators in the clean tech space.   Then we hear from Andrew Haden and Meagan Nuss from Wisewood, a company bringing biomass heating systems to the Western USA. Andrew and Meagan discuss one project in particular, in rural Harney County, where a biomass boiler will use local juniper wood to heat community buildings. Not only is it a system using local renewable resources, but the energy system will eventually be owned by the community in the form of a co-op.   In this episode you’ll learn How Lucid Energy’s turbine system captures energy in water pipes that is normally wasted. How the new turbine replaces a wasteful system of valves Why it can be tough for a ‘no-brainer’ technology to make it to market How innovative projects proceed when there are many stakeholders involved Bill Kelly’s advice for innovators in clean tech How Lucid Energy is prepared for a future that involves both distributed energy in rural areas and grids in concentrated urban areas. The story behind Wisewood, and how it can be economical to ship wood pellets from BritishColumbia to Stockholm but not to use them locally. How biomass energy and forest restoration  are so closely tied together. How cheap hydroelectric power and natural gas prevent biomass projects from happening, despite the need for material to be removed from forests for forest health. How a small town in Oregon is replacing a diesel boiler with a district energy scheme using local juniper wood How something as simple as a wood-fueled boiler can actually be very empowering for rural communities.
