In this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, I, Stewart Alsop, sit down with returning guest Brian Ahuja to explore a thought-provoking idea he's been stewing on—could we one day build a robot capable of true partner dancing? From the biomechanics of salsa to the possibilities of AI embodiment, we unpack what it would take to engineer fluid, responsive movement and how that intersects with everything from artificial muscles to the intimacy of tactile feedback. We also touch on Brian's long-term vision for a potential lab or foundation to tackle this challenge. You can follow Brian and future developments on Twitter @brianahuja.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:00 – Brian Ahuja returns to discuss AI embodiment, sparked by his experience in ballroom dance and curiosity about translating physical intelligence into robotics.05:00 – They explore robotics in partner dancing, touching on the difference between choreographed motion and improvisational, responsive movement.10:00 – Brian breaks down human biomechanics, emphasizing that hip motion in dances like salsa originates from knees and feet—not the hips directly.15:00 – The conversation shifts to balance, proprioception, and ocular reflexes, linking them to movement stability in dance.20:00 – They compare robot vs. human movement, noting robots' jerky motions and the absence of muscle-based initiation.25:00 – The need for haptic feedback is discussed, with Brian detailing how partner dancing depends on tactile signals and real-time response.30:00 – They touch on robotic form factors, questioning whether humanoid robots are the best approach and pondering the design of artificial muscles.35:00 – Brian proposes the idea of the Ahuja Test, gauging if a robot can move so fluidly it's indistinguishable from a human, using dance as the standard.Key InsightsPartner Dancing as a Frontier for Robotics: Brian Ahuja proposes that partner dancing could be a benchmark for robotic embodiment, where success would indicate a robot's ability to replicate fluid, responsive human movement. This task is far more complex than solo choreography—it requires real-time tactile feedback, improvisation, and nuanced physical communication.Movement Origin in Humans vs. Robots: A critical difference lies in how movement is generated. Human motion begins with muscle contraction, not at the joints. Robots, however, typically initiate movement at joint points, missing the layered interplay of muscles, tendons, and fascia that create smooth, lifelike motion.Haptic Feedback and Improvisation: Real partner dancing involves subtle cues, like pressure through fingertips, to signal direction and timing. For a robot to follow or lead a dance, it would need a highly sensitive haptic feedback system capable of interpreting and responding to these nonverbal signals in real time. The Limits of Current Robotics: Even with advanced robots like the Tesla bot, current movement still appears jerky and lacks the fluidity needed for partner dancing. The mechanical design—especially the lack of artificial musculature—may impose fundamental limits on how closely robots can mimic human motion.Applications Beyond Dance: The implications of this inquiry stretch beyond dance into fields like physical therapy, elder care, and domestic robotics. A robot that could move like a human could handle tasks requiring adaptability, precision, and physical sensitivity.Vision and Systems Thinking: Brian frames the challenge as a systems problem that might start with a lab or foundation. He emphasizes not needing to do everything alone, recognizing the value of building knowledge iteratively through conversations, research, and community. The Ahuja Test: Inspired by the Turing Test, Brian coins the idea of the “Ahuja Test”—a way to measure if a robot can move indistinguishably from a human. He suggests partner dancing could serve as the ultimate proving ground for such a test, given its demand for embodied intelligence and nuanced coordination.

This week's show brought to you by: Ketone-IQ You may have read a lot the last few years about the benefits of ketones for endurance performance, such as mitochondrial efficiency and glycogen sparing. Your body uses ketones for energy typically during fasting, long periods of exercise, or when you don't have as many carbohydrates. The problem is that you typically need to severely reduce your carbohydrate intake in order to take advantage of them, which is difficult to sustain, even for the most dedicated runner. But, thanks to Ketone-IQ you quickly deliver ketones to your bloodstream, putting you into ketosis within minutes without the need to fast, restrict calories or carbs, or exercise away your glycogen stores. And the academic literature on the effectiveness of ketones for running performance is overwhelming. For example, a 2021 study demonstrated that the ingestion of ketones improved mitochondrial efficiency by 7% and 2019 study concluded that using ketones significantly enhanced endurance performance while minimizing overtraining. If you want to see more of the research, head to ketone.com/RTTT Plus, for a limited time you can save 30% off your first subscription order & receive a free six pack of Ketone-IQ by going ketone.com/RTTT. That's K-E-T-O-N-E dot com slash RTTT. MAS NAD+ for Runners Did you know that by Age 40, your NAD+ levels can be half of what they were at 20? And they only go downhill from there. This is important because lower NAD+ levels have been shown in research to impact some of the hallmarks of aging such as reduced muscle strength, lower mitochondrial performance and overall energy. But, just because NAD+ levels decline with age doesn't mean you have to accept it. NAD+ from MAS Edge is a groundbreaking formula that can increase your NAD+ levels by 67%. Their unique formula enhances absorption by 71% and increases uptake and utilization in the body by 167% compared to generic NAD+ supplements. This means you can slow muscle loss, improve recovery, increase your energy levels, and fight aging at the cellular level. You can check out the results yourself at masedge.com/nad. Plus, runnersconnect fans will automatically save 20% on any purchase. If you're ready to fight all the typical signs of aging and feel a decade younger, this is no-brainer.

“Serendipity is a real grabbing force of science,” says Léo Laborieux as he shares his experience describing his new species of scorpion. While at a remote research station in the Colombian rainforest, Léo found a handful of scorpions that exhibited a unique venom ‘flicking' behavior. Armed only with his phone and a few basic supplies, Léo documented the behavior, diagnosed the scorpions as being a new species, and came to fascinating conclusions about venom biomechanics. In this episode he brings us deep into the world of scorpion venoms and shares his love of these creatures and their startling diversity.Léo Laborieux' paper “Biomechanics of venom delivery in South America's first toxungen-spraying scorpion” is in the December 2024 edition of the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. Daniel's strength journey isn't about ego, vanity, or validation. It's about becoming strong enough to show up—for his family, his faith, and his community. In this honest conversation, we unpack how pain, injury, and spiritual confusion shaped a deeper path: one where strength became a way to serve, not just succeed. Whether you're coaching others, rebuilding yourself, or trying to find meaning through movement… this one's for you.
In this episode, I'm offering guidance on how to transition from a 200-hour teacher training to therapeutic practices. I emphasize a return to clarity and authenticity rather than chasing dramatic breakthroughs. I discuss the nervous system's protective patterns and advocate for compassionate, precise movements to foster safety and transformation. The episode blends biomechanics, neuroscience, and presence, offering tools for deeper understanding and application of therapeutic yoga.
In this episode, Ben Yanes joins me to discuss biomechanics and bodybuilding. We talk about how critical thinking and biomechanics go hand in hand when it comes to exercise selection, why blindly following popular movements doesn't always lead to better results, and how to train with more intent. If you're serious about building muscle, this conversation might make you rethink how you approach your next workout. Sit back, relax, and enjoy! In this episode of The Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast, I'm joined by the incredible Kelly de Geus: an amazing horsewoman known for her ability to train horses the piaffe in a light, soft, willing, biomechanically correct way. Kelly de Geus is a dedicated horse trainer and coach from the Netherlands, who has been captivated by horses for as long as she can remember. For over a decade, Kelly's main focus has been on training horses herself, developing a specialty in teaching horses to piaffe and passage in hand. This is always a result of optimal communication and body use, and never a quick fix or trick. Having trained over 1000 horses in hand, Kelly now primarily focuses on sharing the knowledge she gained by doing so, thereby helping more people (and, in turn, more horses) feel better, improve posture and optimise performance. I first reached out to Kelly for online lessons years ago after being mesmerised by how light and happy her horses looked in the piaffe. At the time, she didn't have online resources, but she agreed to help me through online lessons and I was blown away by her approach. She taught me that that piaffe is reflection of correct basics, and that there are a sequence of things that need to be in place before the piaffe is possible. Her values in training horses align closely to my own so I am so happy to share her voice with the horse world. In this episode, we cover: ✨ The true purpose of piaffe as a diagnostic and gymnastic exercise (it's more than just fancy footwork and it's not a ‘circus trick'!) ✨The importance of conncection, communication, & biomechanics ✨ Common mistakes & how to know if your horse is ready to start training the piaffe ✨ The groundwork that sets the foundation for collection ✨ Adjusting her training approach to different horses ✨The role of positive reinforcement in her training ✨Plus so much more! If you've ever dreamed of training the piaffe, this is THE episode for you!

Isometrics can be beneficial but are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Muscle function and nervous system adaptation are crucial in rehab. Pain should guide rehabilitation strategies. Heavy loads must be relative to the individual's condition. Powerlifters can experience patellar tendinopathy due to high volume and intensity. Biomechanics play a role in tendon injuries but are not the sole factor. Chronic workload changes can lead to tendon pain. Expectations and beliefs can influence treatment outcomes. Individualized approaches are essential for effective rehabilitation. High bar back squats may aggravate tendon injuries more than low bar squats. Mismanagement of tendon injuries often leads to prolonged recovery times. Progressive loading is crucial for effective rehabilitation. Remote rehabilitation can provide more frequent and tailored care. Imaging can create fear and confusion about tendon injuries. Partial tears may not always require surgical intervention. Post-surgery rehabilitation is highly individualized and can be challenging. Injections may provide temporary relief but are not a guaranteed solution. Stretching tendons should be minimized, especially in early stages of rehab. BPC-157's effectiveness remains largely anecdotal and requires more research. In this episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education podcast, hosts Matthew Worwood and Cyndi Burnett are joined by Santosh Zachariah, an educator with a rich background in STEM fields and a passion for fostering creativity in his students. Santosh shares insights from his journey from civil engineering and software development to teaching and educational technology coordination. He underscores the importance of intrinsic motivation and the power of removing grades to cultivate meaningful learning experiences. The conversation delves into the challenges and strategies of creating grade-free environments, emphasizing student reflection and metacognition as tools to fuel curiosity and creativity. Santosh offers practical examples from his experience at the Evergreen School, where intrinsic motivation is prioritized to help students explore their interests and develop skills rather than simply achieving grades. The episode explores broader themes around how educators can nurture creativity by promoting metacognitive strategies and fostering engagement through meaning-driven tasks. Santosh reflects on the challenges of assessing process over product and the importance of scaffolding learning to support creativity in any content area. The discussion touches on examples of real-world creativity, such as the innovative responses of teachers during the pandemic and the impact of a professional development experience at Western Kentucky University that emphasized creativity in teaching. Santosh's insights highlight the ongoing need for educators to adapt their approaches to inspire meaningful learning and creativity in the classroom. Listeners are encouraged to reflect on how these strategies might be applied in their own educational settings to enrich teaching and learning experiences. About Santosh Zachariah: Santosh Zachariah has happily found himself in late elementary and middle school STEM classrooms at The Evergreen School for the past 15 years, having first meandered from Civil Engineering to clincal Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to Biomechanics research to software engineering. Send us a textLabor dystocia, often labeled as "failure to progress," is the leading reason for cesarean birth in the United States. At its core, prolonged labor is frequently influenced by suboptimal fetal positioning, as well as the mother's biomechanics, anatomy, and physiology. In this episode, we delve into the true causes of labor dystocia and explore how intentional movement and positioning—both during pregnancy and labor—can promote a smoother, more efficient birth. Our discussion covers:The definitions of labor dystocia and why there is no universal consensus; How fetal positioning impacts labor progress and ways to optimize it;The effects of maternal posture, movement, and soft tissue balance during pregnancy and birth;Understanding biomechanics in making space for the baby and easing labor challenges; How the medical model misinterprets and over-manages normal variations in labor; andPractical strategies to prevent and resolve labor dystocia naturally. When a mother and baby are doing well in labor there is no upper limit to how long her labor can go. No woman should be diagnosed with failure to progress, a term we reject. This episodes provides insights and tips to optimize your labor and your baby's position and reduced the chances of experiencing a long, difficult labor.Molly O'brienMolly on Instagram**********Our sponsors:Silverette Nursing Cups -- Soothe and heal sore nipples with 925 silver nursing cups.Postpartum Soothe -- Herbs and padsicles to heal and comfort.Needed -- Our favorite nutritional products for before, during, and after pregnancy. The bone and joint structures in mammal tails help them keep their balance. Could those benefits be adapted for robots? And, in her first children's book, conservationist Bindi Irwin takes little readers on a journey through Australia Zoo.In Search Of The Best Tail For BalanceIf you have met a cat, you've probably at some point been amazed by how acrobatic they are. They're able to reorient themselves effortlessly, even in midair. It turns out that a lot of that twistiness comes down to having a top-tier tail. While most reptile tails can swing only in one plane of movement, mammal tails have more joints, leading to better inertial control. That lets mammals tweak their balance better, much as holding a balance pole can help an acrobat navigate a tightrope. In a recent study published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, researchers explored the biomechanics of different tails, and considered how a better tail could help build a better robot. Dr. Talia Moore, a roboticist at the University of Michigan, and Dr. Ceri Weber, a cellular and developmental biology postdoc at UC San Diego, join Host Flora Lichtman to talk tails.Bindi Irwin Encourages Kids To Become ‘Wildlife Warriors'Almost 30 years ago, conservationists Terri Irwin and the late Steve Irwin captured the world's attention with their show “The Crocodile Hunter.” It introduced millions of people to Australia Zoo and the strange, often scary, sometimes cute, critters from Down Under. Now, Terri and her children—Bindi and Robert—are at the helm of the zoo, which is the setting for Bindi's new children's book, You Are a Wildlife Warrior!: Saving Animals & the Planet. In it, Bindi takes little readers and her own daughter, Grace, on an adventure through the zoo.Host Flora Lichtman talks with Bindi about her family's legacy, how motherhood fuels her approach to conservation, and what it's like to run a zoo.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
