Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is the abandoned child of a now-defunct cinematic universe. Pushed multiple times and released far after James Gunn's announcement of his new DCU, the writing was on the wall, or in the sand, for the King of Atlantis' fate. And, yet, the studio still felt they needed to tinker with it to death. The fingerprints of studio meddling are all over Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The editing is slap dash, and their blatant desire to rid the film of Amber Heard's Mera is painfully obvious. Jason Mamoa, for all his charm, goes full Aquabro in an attempt to distract viewers from all the warts lining the film's oceanic underbelly. But, as we all know, one should never go full Aquabro. Despite his over the top schtick wearing thin far before the final credits roll, though, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is still a fairly decent time at the movies. The Orm/Arthur dynamic is fun throughout, the action beats mostly hit, and the return of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta is a welcome one. Sadly, audiences knew that this was the dead end of all dead ends; and, as a result, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom couldn't even muster half of its predecessor's $1.1 billion+ box office. Still, considering the current superhero cinema landscape, $434.4 million isn't too shabby. Now, sit back and refine that Orichalcum because it's a lovely day for a Guinness! Our topic this week is on the future of the DCEU. With Aquaman pretty much guaranteed to cross 1 billion dollars, does WB stay the course or try to use what they've learned to remake their DCEU. Also, Marvel is planning on keeping a lot of Endgame under wraps in it's previews. Of the year podcast coming next week! #dceu #marvel #aquaman #netflix #bandersnatch #endgame #avengers4#podcast
There really isn't a greater sin when it comes to comic book films than having an actor play a character but their portrayal is nothing like any iteration of the character that has ever been written.Jason Momoa isn't Aquaman, he's just Aquabro. And that comes with all the problematic hyper masculinity "Look Arthur Curry isn't a punk. He's a man's man" bs that comes with it. And that's just the first problem that Aquaman has. The score and soundtrack is bad. The dialogue is bad. The story tries to cram the Throne of Atlantis storyline, which could be a full trilogy, into one movie that's all over the place. Yes, the fight scenes are enjoyable and there are some standouts (Yahya Abdul-Mateen's Black Manta is criminally underused). But at this point, why are we still making excuses for DC & WB when it comes to their execution of these films? Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! Jason Momoa is a habitual line stepper. During the promotional tour for justice league Jason Momoa was the guy saying F—Marvel and how much better the Justice League film was. In the weeks leading up to the Aquaman premiere the Aquabro himself has been stirring the pot when it comes to the DC vs Marvel rivalry. The Amazon Prime Member preview has already happened and the initial reviews are that the movie is good, OK when it works you can brag just a little. Although my dude is getting many fans excited for something that Warner bros may not able to or want to come through on. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
The Laymen hit the metaphorical beaches of the Multiverse to explore Aquabro and his history. Let's be honest, this episode wouldn't have likely happened if not for the movie.
Wil and Charlie discuss finding the appropriate sized bud, the new Boston Dynamics terror bot, Aquabro, and (ahem) the "Everyone Read Fax" theme song.
The 4 Nerds begin with an Ant-Man & The Wasp discussion followed thoughts on the recent announcement of Joaquin Phoenix casting in the upcoming Joker origin story film. Then the fellas, having recorded this episode the week prior to SDCC, try and make predictions about what will be announced as well as anything else that might go down at the biggest Con of the year. Finally, they finish up with their favorite subject, comics. AquaBro & Shazam unite! I Don't Know Man...
