Hey horror fans! This week we're joined by Isaiah Saxon, director of A24's The Legend of Ochi and co-founder of the visionary film and animation studio Encyclopedia Pictura. We talk about Isaiah's early creative roots, from drawing and stop-motion to building the kid-focused platform DIY.org, and how all of that shaped his unique approach to storytelling. Then we dive deep into the stunning handmade world of Carpathia—filled with puppets, animatronics, painted maps, 1930s lenses, and big heart.Isaiah shares what it was like working with Willem Dafoe and Helena Zengel, how he blends mythology and music, and why he believes films should feel like moving paintings instead of hyper-reality.We left this conversation genuinely inspired; Isaiah is someone bringing magic back to movies in a way we haven't seen in a long time.If you're into bold storytelling, weird creatures, and fantasy flicks from the '80s and '90s, this one's for you so...COME HANG OUT!!!Follow Us on Social Media:Instagram & Threads: @mostlyhorrorpodTikTok & Twitter/X: @mostlyhorrorSteve: @stevenisaverage on all socialsSean: @hypocrite.ink on IG/TikTok, @hypocriteink on Twitter/XEnjoy this episode? In this Normal World episode, Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela pay tribute to Val Kilmer following reports of his passing. The conversation spans Kilmer's iconic roles, the impact of real movie stars, and how Hollywood's obsession with identity politics and DEI is ruining storytelling. They roast Disney's disastrous Snow White reboot, Rachel Zegler's PR missteps, and the industry's erasure of mid-budget, heartfelt films in favor of agenda-driven flops. They tackle the state of acting, the pressure of lead roles, studio cowardice, and the echo chamber killing creativity. From Star Wars failures to dwarfs losing roles to Peter Dinklage's hypocrisy, the crew calls out the absurdity. They dive into the loss of moviegoing culture, why conservatives should fund real art, and how AI dog translators might be the next nightmare. Your Tin Men of trivia are back for round two of their epic deep dive into the making of the most watched movie in history. On this episode, you’ll learn about the hellish production, which ended up injuring, maiming (or, at very least, psychologically harming) at nearly every member of the cast. The Scarecrow was nearly set on fire — but he was saved from his costume made of asbestos. The Wicked Witch actually WAS set on fire, and the frantic crew had to scrub down her freshly-burned skin with alcohol. A “heavily medicated” Judy Garland was emotionally abused by everyone from the studio execs on down — all for the name of MOVIE MAGIC! The wildly-expensive lightening caused brown-outs all over LA, the tornado sequence nearly choked the SFX team, and then there were the poor prop masters who made fake glass out of liquid mercury. Between the accidentals, constantly revolving cast of writers and directors, and the outbreak of World War II, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ should have been a complete and utter disaster. How did it become a top tier classic, with special resonance within the LGBTQ community? Why does Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' sync up so well with the film? Did a distraught Munchkin actor really hang themselves in the middle of a scene? Take a listen, and all the answers will be revealed! We're strapping in for a wild ride to Mars this week on Born to Watch with our 1990 sci-fi blockbuster Total Recall (1990) Review. Whitey, Gow, Damo, and Dan are back in full force for the first time in 2025 to dive into Arnold Schwarzenegger's mind-bending journey through memory wipes, mutant revolutions, and three-breasted surprises. This is peak Arnie, folks—at the top of both the box office and his biceps game.We break down the epic mind games cooked up by Paul Verhoeven, whose signature blend of over-the-top violence and dark humour made this a sci-fi classic. From Rob Bottin's unforgettable practical effects (seriously, those animatronics still hold up) to Jerry Goldsmith's iconic score, the Born to Watch crew spares no detail. Did we mention the bar full of rebellious mutants and the iconic line: “Consider that a divorce”? Because that line still slaps. But is Total Recall just a kick-ass action flick, or is there something deeper? We debate whether Doug Quaid's adventure was all a dream and how Philip K. Dick's story inspired decades of mind-twisting movies. Plus, we marvel at Sharon Stone's layered performance (and next-level fight scenes), give props to Michael Ironside's rage-filled villainy, and shout out the criminally underrated Rachel Ticotin for holding her own in this testosterone fest. It's not all good news for Mars, though—Damo points out the planet's serious lack of workplace safety, from deadly airlock fans to bullet-prone glass domes. And Dan isn't too impressed with Arnie's hand-to-hand combat scenes, but hey, when you've got that physique, who needs finesse?Of course, no Born to Watch episode is complete without some signature chaos. The guys veer off into debates about Mars real estate values, the dangers of Venusville fans, and even Arnold's fitness regimen—yes, that includes "cock day." And the trailer? Let's just say it gave away way too much.To wrap it all up, we hit the good, the bad, and the ugly, with shoutouts to Quato's teeth (seriously, Gow's obsessed), killer squib work, and those ridiculous hologram fights where henchmen just blast each other to bits. So, get your ass to Mars and join us for one hell of an episode. You'll be laughing, quoting, and questioning reality right along with us. Just remember: “Get ready for a surprise!”If you enjoyed this trip to Mars with us, help spread the word by sharing Born to Watch with your friends, family, and fellow movie buffs!
