By the Power of Grayskull... This Movie ExistsWelcome to this episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! Hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell are joined by special guests Jordan Collier and Derrick Tesson to tackle the 1987 sci-fi fantasy spectacle Masters of the Universe. What happens when you take beloved toys, add Dolph Lundgren in a furry loincloth, and let Cannon Films work their budget magic? A movie that should have been good but becomes a fascinating study in wasted potential. The Cosmic Key to This DiscussionThe crew dives deep into this He-Man adaptation that somehow makes its titular hero a supporting character in his own movie. While Franklin Langella chews scenery magnificently as Skeletor, delivering Shakespearean gravitas to lines like "Tell me about the loneliness of good, He-Man—is it equal to the loneliness of evil?", the film suffers from an identity crisis. Is it Star Wars? Is it Conan? The answer: it's a Cannon Films production that tries to be both and succeeds at neither.Nathan defends his childhood favorite while acknowledging its flaws, giving it a nostalgic 7 out of 10 cosmic keys. The other hosts are less forgiving, with ratings ranging from 3-6, all agreeing that the movie's biggest sin is having too much plot crammed into its runtime. The discussion reveals how Masters of the Universe exemplifies the late-80s trend of studios trying to manufacture Star Wars-level franchises without understanding what made that saga work.Additional Cosmic Revelations:Gwildor (Billy Barty) somehow became the real protagonist while He-Man watches from the sidelinesDolph Lundgren dubbed his own lines despite not being fluent in English during filmingThe film's budget constraints forced most action to Earth, making it less a He-Man movie and more a sci-fi fish-out-of-water storySkeletor's mask was later recycled for Star Trek: The Next GenerationThe movie features unexpected connections to Friends and Back to the FutureThe Final VerdictDespite universal agreement that the movie fails to live up to its potential, the hosts find entertainment value in its ambitious campiness and Langella's committed villain performance. It's a movie that epitomizes the "so bad it's almost good" category—emphasis on almost.Ready for More 80s Movie Magic?Join the conversation at trustory.fm where members get early, ad-free access plus exclusive bonus content! TALK TO ME, TEXT ITOur medical system harbors a shocking secret that might make you think twice about your organ donor card. A disturbing investigation has uncovered that doctors may be rushing organ transplants before donors have truly passed away. With over 70 cases in Kentucky alone where organ retrievals were canceled because patients showed signs of revival, the story raises profound ethical questions about our transplant system. More alarmingly, medical workers across 19 states report witnessing disturbing cases, with some alleging that drugs were administered specifically to hasten donors' deaths.Away from these medical ethics concerns, we've uncovered that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. may be facing marital troubles. After purchasing a $4.34 million Georgetown townhouse reportedly at his wife Cheryl Hines' request, Kennedy now finds himself in an awkward position as sources claim she has no intention of leaving Hollywood to become a DC power couple. The purchase, which followed allegations of Kennedy's inappropriate relationship with a journalist, was supposed to "mend their marital bridges" – but appears to have failed in that mission. For fans of fashion and film, we've confirmed the exciting news that "The Devil Wears Prada" sequel is genuinely happening! Production has already begun under the clever codename "Carillion" (a reference to Miranda Priestly's famous cerulean blue monologue), and the entire original cast is returning. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci will all reprise their iconic roles in what's sure to be a must-watch follow-up to the beloved original. *I've done what I can to salvage the audio but there's some unrecoverable skips in the audio in this episode.*We're back in the studio to talk about this year's new surprise-hit - Ryan Coogler's Sinners - a horror/historical fiction romp that ties together creative worldbuilding, sober historicism, deep homages to the blues and vampire folklore for an experience that calls forth spirits of the past and future - and how the segment Concerning Violence from Frantz Fanon's seminal work Wretched of the Earth ties in somehow! https://linktr.ee/greenhousegaslighting
Hey horror fans! This week we're joined by Isaiah Saxon, director of A24's The Legend of Ochi and co-founder of the visionary film and animation studio Encyclopedia Pictura. We talk about Isaiah's early creative roots, from drawing and stop-motion to building the kid-focused platform DIY.org, and how all of that shaped his unique approach to storytelling. Then we dive deep into the stunning handmade world of Carpathia—filled with puppets, animatronics, painted maps, 1930s lenses, and big heart.Isaiah shares what it was like working with Willem Dafoe and Helena Zengel, how he blends mythology and music, and why he believes films should feel like moving paintings instead of hyper-reality.We left this conversation genuinely inspired; Isaiah is someone bringing magic back to movies in a way we haven't seen in a long time.If you're into bold storytelling, weird creatures, and fantasy flicks from the '80s and '90s, this one's for you so...COME HANG OUT!!!Follow Us on Social Media:Instagram & Threads: @mostlyhorrorpodTikTok & Twitter/X: @mostlyhorrorSteve: @stevenisaverage on all socialsSean: @hypocrite.ink on IG/TikTok, @hypocriteink on Twitter/XEnjoy this episode? We now pull out yet another one of the seven Henry Mancini albums my dad had. He's one of my favorites too. This one is a follow up to Mancini Plays The Great Academy Award Songs, the album you heard in Volume 43: Mancini and the Oscar Winners. There's just something about his music. You just recognize the sound right away. So get ready to hear music from a composer arranger who had his hands on the scores for more than 100 big screen films in Volume 223: Mancini Movie Magic. In this Normal World episode, Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela pay tribute to Val Kilmer following reports of his passing. The conversation spans Kilmer's iconic roles, the impact of real movie stars, and how Hollywood's obsession with identity politics and DEI is ruining storytelling. They roast Disney's disastrous Snow White reboot, Rachel Zegler's PR missteps, and the industry's erasure of mid-budget, heartfelt films in favor of agenda-driven flops. They tackle the state of acting, the pressure of lead roles, studio cowardice, and the echo chamber killing creativity. From Star Wars failures to dwarfs losing roles to Peter Dinklage's hypocrisy, the crew calls out the absurdity. They dive into the loss of moviegoing culture, why conservatives should fund real art, and how AI dog translators might be the next nightmare. This episode of Normal World features special guest Matthew Marsden. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
