For those unfamiliar with Ukpabio, she is an infamous Nigerian preacher/filmmaker whose poisonous teaching about demon possession has led many children to be abandoned, abused--even murdered--by their families. To see just how nutty Ukpabio is, check out her film "End of the Wicked." Also...North Carolina preachers with an anti-gay agenda are in the news again. This time it's Pastor Charles Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, NC. Worley's Final Solution for "the lesbians and the queers" has gone viral on the web. Finally, we review the controversy surrounding one-time Republican lobbyist Edwina Rogers as the new executive director of the Secular Coalition for America. Rogers has gotten off to a rocky start with prominent freethought bloggers, mostly for her insistence that Republicans are NOT largely anti-choice, anti-gay and anti-seperation-of-church-and-state. President Barack Obama goes on the record in support of gay marriage--but only a day after North Carolina voters approved a state constitutional amendment banning it. And speaking of North Carolina, pastor Sean Harris of Fayetteville's Berean Baptist Church preached a sermon in which he advocated parental violence against gay children. He later issued a non-apology apology, dismissing the whole thing as a poor choice of words. Meanwhile, gay activist Dan Savage is under fire from critics for calling bull$#!+ on Christians obsessed with Old Testament prohibitions against homosexuality. Finally, David highly recommends Kurt Vonnegut's classic novel Cat's Cradle. Encore release September 6, 2018. Encore release May 30, 2017.   That's right, 150 episodes. Yay us. John gives a report on his (and Allison's) recent trip to London and Edinburgh. A good time was had by all. We received lots of listener feedback on our interview in show 149 with Matthew Bowman, an admitted true-believing Mormon and author of the cultural history The Mormon People: The Making of an American Faith (hardcover or Kindle). Listeners opined Mormon attempts to overturn same-sex marriage in Maryland, the shocking suicide rate among gay Mormons, and expressed dismay that a seemingly thoughtful and intelligent person could believe in golden plates. On to business...it looks like the religionists won Salazar v. Buono, the case to remove a Christian cross (erected by a private party in 1934) from Sunrise Rock, which is located deep within the federally-owned preserve in California's Mojave Desert. Rather than rule that a private cross on federal property is unconstitutional, the Supreme Court kicked the case back to the lower court. Now a federal judge has ruled that the cross can stay as long as the government swaps the acre where the cross sits for five acres elsewhere. It's a bad ruling and a bad outcome that sets a bad precedent. No secular (or no-Christian) symbol would ever have been show such deference. Meanwhile, the Freedom from Religion Foundation has convinced Sylvania, Alabama to remove a blatantly religious Bible verse from its "welcome" signs. How anyone could think that "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism" isn't hopelessly sectarian and plainly unconstitutional boggles the imagination. Finally, the War on Christmas rages in April in Leesburg, Virginia, where local freethought groups are urging the county's planners NOT to allow holiday displays on the courthouse grounds. (In recent years, the park around the courthouse has turned into a tacky free-speech free-for-all. We will delve deeper into life of one of the founders of the modern skeptics movement, Martin Gardner. American man of letters and numbers -- and logic and magic and patterns and puzzles -- Martin Gardner (1914-2010) wrote about 100 books, starting with "Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science" sixty years ago. That led to his playing a founding role in CSICOP (Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal), and the Skeptical Inquirer magazine. He was most well-known for his book The Annotated Alice (in Wonderland), the 300 columns he wrote for Scientific American, mostly on recreational mathematics, and the huge body of magic he created. Lee Dugatkin's Mr. Jefferson and the Giant Moose is a tale of both natural history and American history. What started out in the Revolutionary War era as an international dispute over natural history quickly took on important political overtones. The story revolves around three fascinating individuals. Thomas Jefferson, the French Count and world-renowned naturalist, George-Louis Leclerc Buffon, who claimed that all life in America was "degenerate," weak and feeble, and a very large, dead moose. While Jefferson is known to every schoolchild, the latter two, although lesser known, are equally important to the story. Their interactions lay at the heart of an amazing tale in which Jefferson obsessed over a very large, very dead moose that he believed could help quash early French arrogance toward a fledgling republic in America, and demonstrate that a young America was every bit the equal of a well-established Europe. Our Speaker Lee Alan Dugatkin is a Professor of Biology at the University of Louisville. He has a B.A. in History and a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology. In addition to Mr. Jefferson, he is the author of nine books on evolution, behavior, and the history of science, including The Altruism Equation and Cheating Monkeys and Citizen Bees. Lee's book The Prince of Evolution is now out in trade paperback. It is a fast moving history-of-science/adventure tale centering on the remarkable life of Prince Peter Kropotkin. Lee has lectured on his work all over the world, including in England, Canada, Japan, Sweden, The Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, and Switzerland. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky with his wife and son.
