In 1980, two unidentified women were found murdered in California, one in Ventura County and the other in Kern County. For decades, they were known only as Jane Does, their names and stories erased by time. Their killer, Wilson Chouest, was identified years ago, but the identities of his victims remained a mystery. Now, through advances in forensic genealogy and relentless investigative work, both women have finally been identified, restoring their names after more than 40 years. In this episode, I revisited a chapter from the earliest days of The Book of the Dead, examine how Chouest was linked to the crimes, and explore how modern DNA technology is rewriting the endings of cold cases once thought unsolvable. This is a story of delayed justice, the power of identification, and why names matter.Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.comFeaturing a promo for Murder UnscriptedVeteran true-crime producer, Ed (Forensic Files, Cold Case Files, City Confidential) and his crime encyclopedia gal pal, Melissa, bring you the most immersive podcast in the genre - breaking down the barrier between fan and creator.Listen HereCramer, M. Sports betting is exploding across the country. With online platforms, mobile apps, and aggressive marketing, it's never been easier to gamble — or easier to hide it. What many view as harmless entertainment may actually be reshaping how we think about money, community, and even discipleship.Pastor and author Kyle Worley—Lead Pastor of Mosaic Church in Richardson, Texas, co-host of the Knowing Faith podcast, and author of Home with God: Our Union with Christ—recently wrote on this growing trend for Faithful Steward magazine. Today, he joins the show to explain why the rise of sports gambling deserves more careful thought from believers.A Different Kind of GamblingSports gambling carries a unique appeal. Unlike casinos or the lottery, it taps into nostalgia, play, and community.“Sports connect to childhood memories and communal experiences,” Worley notes. “That nostalgia makes sports betting feel natural, even harmless.”The danger lies in how subtly wagering attaches itself to something already meaningful—games shared with friends, family, or childhood heroes—making it easier to dismiss spiritual risks. What Does Scripture Actually Say?The Bible does not explicitly outlaw gambling. But it repeatedly warns against the desire for quick, hasty gain. Worley points to 1 Timothy 6:9–10, noting that it speaks directly to the temptations and destruction tied to wealth pursued rapidly and without wisdom. Gambling fits that pattern.Scripture's concern is not merely financial but formational. Gambling trains us to view wealth through the lens of chance, speed, and self-interest—the opposite of stewardship, patience, and contentment. The spiritual stakes aren't just internal. They are profoundly communal. Worley cites Old Testament scholar Bruce Waltke:“The righteous disadvantage themselves for the sake of the community; the unrighteous advantage themselves at the expense of the community.”Modern betting apps are built on asymmetric outcomes—they profit only because others lose. And statistically, those losses fall disproportionately on the vulnerable. Many platforms use predatory models:Winners face worse odds or even shuttered accountsConsistent losers are enticed with better odds and larger limitsWorley compares it to handing a chainsaw to a child—unjust simply because not everyone absorbs the harm equally.Normalization and Cultural FormationSports gambling has moved from taboo to mainstream with startling speed. Betting lines now appear on ESPN, broadcasts, and social media—even during youth-oriented sports programming. The result: a generation being formed to see gambling as normal and morally neutral.Worley warns that where gambling proliferates, other forms of exploitation follow — including human trafficking during major sporting events. While the Bible may speak indirectly about gambling, it speaks directly about exploitation. Some point to the biblical practice of casting lots as justification for gambling. Worley draws a sharp distinction:Casting lots was a religious act of trust—not a wager. It carried no profit motive and served no entertainment purpose. Reframing it as support for modern gambling misunderstands its role entirely. How Churches Can Disciple BetterFor pastors and ministry leaders, Worley offers three recommendations:Talk More About Money - Many Christians lack a positive theology of wealth. That vacuum leaves them vulnerable to cultural narratives.Address “Respectable” Vices - Gambling isn't the only fun, socially accepted vice that harms stewardship. Churches must disciple beyond obvious sins.Create Healthy Avenues for Play and Connection - Sports betting offers counterfeit community, especially for men. Churches should provide better alternatives. The Wisdom Required TodayIn the end, debates about whether gambling is technically permissible miss the deeper biblical question: Does this help me love God and neighbor well?Worley's counsel is simple: navigate these decisions in community, under Scripture, with wisdom. Quick profit is never neutral—it forms us. And it shapes the people around us.As sports betting continues to surge, Christians will need more than opinions. They will need conviction, clarity, and a vision of stewardship that honors God and protects the vulnerable.———————————————————————————————————————Kyle Worley's full article, “The Real Stakes of Sports Betting,” appears in the latest issue of Faithful Steward magazine. Fasting and prayer aren’t religious routines—they’re powerful spiritual disciplines that draw us closer to God. In Week 3 of Deeper 21, Pastor JC Worley teaches what happens when prayer and fasting come together and how God responds when His people seek Him in desperation. Through the story of King Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20, we see how prayer and fasting bring divine direction, God’s favor, and spiritual power—even when we don’t know what to do. When our eyes are on God, the battle belongs to Him.

Fasting isn't just about being hungry; it’s about being hungry for God. In Week 2 of our "Deeper 21" series, Pastor JC Worley unpacks the biblical purpose of fasting and why it is one of the most powerful tools for spiritual growth. It’s easy to view fasting as a way to manipulate God or just a religious diet, but the truth is much simpler: God responds to movement. When we draw near to Him by disconnecting from the world, He promises to draw near to us. Key Takeaway: The Definition: Moving from a technical understanding to a practical hunger for God. The Purpose: Why fasting is about devotion, not deprivation. The Effect: How fasting acts like "noise-canceling headphones" for your spirit, tuning out the world so you can hear God clearly. The Flesh vs. Spirit: Breaking the cycle of comfort and convenience to strengthen your spirit. Practical Steps: The different types of biblical fasts (Normal, Partial, and Absolute) and how to start. If you are looking to quiet the noise of the world and reset your spiritual sensitivity, this message is for you. Scripture References: James 4:8, Joel 2:12, Galatians 5

As we step into a new year, Scripture calls us to live by faith and not by sight. We live in a visually driven culture, but sight is factual and not always truthful. From the beginning, the enemy has worked to deceive through what looks good and seems desirable. If we are going to live faith forward in 2026, we cannot trust our eyes. We must ask a better question: What does God say about what I see? Hebrews 11 reminds us that faith is the proof of what is not seen, and without faith it is impossible to please God. Faith always stands in opposition to sight. Living faith forward means believing God's Word and doing things that only God can do. Faith begins with understanding, but it must move us to action. Scripture gives clear examples of faith in action. Noah believed God and built an ark when it made no sense. Moses walked away from comfort and stepped forward at the Red Sea. By faith they understood, by faith they acted, and by faith they persevered. As we move into 2026, the call is the same. Send us a textDeath has never been funnier as legendary road comic Bob Worley transforms roadkill encounters into comedy gold in this special Audience of One bonus show. Bob kicks things off with a perfectly executed misdirection, asking host Scott Edwards about those heart-stopping moments when animals dart in front of your car – only to reveal he's never experienced this himself and is shocked that Scott apparently has a history of vehicular animal slaughter. The comedy builds as Bob shares increasingly absurd scenarios, including a friend who hit a deer and proudly displayed its duct-taped antlers as a trophy. The hilarity reaches new heights when Bob contemplates the physics of hitting a cow – "How does a cow dart out in front of your car? Don't they just mosey along?" His vivid descriptions of udder-hindered bovine movement will have you laughing despite yourself. The comedic climax arrives with Bob's confession about hitting a pigeon named "Billy" who tragically miscalculated his escape timing, followed by the other pigeons' pragmatic response to their friend's demise – "Oh, Billy didn't make it" – before proceeding to eat him in what Bob philosophically calls "the circle of life."This episode showcases exactly why Bob Worley has been a comedy staple for over four decades. His ability to find humor in life's uncomfortable moments and deliver it with impeccable timing reminds us why dark comedy, when done right, creates some of the most memorable laughs. D'Arcy Carden is the best kind of busy right now. She just wrapped her run on the Emmy award winning series The Handmaid's Tale where she managed to swoop in during the show's sixth and final season and quickly establish herself as a fan favorite character. Right now she's in production on a highly anticipated and star studded Peacock series based on Elin Hilderbrand's novel, Five Star Weekend. Carden stars in that one alongside Jennifer Garner, Regina Hall, Chloë Sevigny and Gemma Chan. Carden also makes a mark on the indie cinema space this year courtesy of Seth Worley's phenomenal feature directorial debut, Sketch. The movie utilizes a downright brilliant concept to explore a family's grief. Jack (Kue Lawrence) and Amber (Bianca Belle) recently lost their mother, and they're coping with it in two totally different ways, as is their father, Taylor, played by Tony Hale. While Jack and Taylor are bottling it all up, Amber is expressing herself with art — or, more specifically, by drawing violent monsters in her notebook. One day, that notebook falls in a pond. But, it's not any old pond. This pond has magical powers, and it brings her sketches to life, and those sketches go on to terrorize her town.Carden enters as Liz, Jack and Amber's real estate agent aunt. Initially, she's wholly focused on helping Taylor sell their home but soon comes to realize that the fight against Amber's drawings is very real, and she's going to have to fight creatures made of marker, crayon, glitter, and more alongside her brother.Sketch is a top tier original film. Not only is the story idea genius, but even as a first time feature filmmaker, Worley's got the skillset necessary to expertly bring the ambitious concept to screen on an independent film budget. With Sketch now available to rent on digital platforms, Carden visited the Collider Ladies Night studio to discuss her experience making the film, and to look back on unforgettable career milestones like scoring her role in The Good Place, which earned her an Emmy nomination, and her time working on Prime Video's gone-too-soon A League of Their Own.
