One of those episodes; episode 122, covers the case of Patricia Stichler. New Years' Day 1985 should have rung in an exciting new year for Patti Stichler and her three young daughters. Instead, in the middle of the night on January 1-2, someone slashed and stabbed Patti to death in her bedroom. Her three girls, ages 11, 9 and 6, were in their bedrooms just feet away. The oldest, Andrea, was the one to find her mom, and also found the most significant clue the police had – the open window in the blood-stained bathroom, and the gaping curtains that had been cut away from it. A knife sheath was found right outside, but the killer eluded police for decades. Sylvania, OH investigators focused on people Patti knew, but could not link anyone in her inner circle to the crime. Decades later, a very complex forensic genealogy analysis that required interpreting one-sided DNA matches, piercing adoption records, and a lot of luck, finally provided a name – and it was not who anyone suspected. Send us a Text Message. For thousands of years, the land that would become Pennsylvania was dominated by dense, ancient forests that stretched as far as the eye could see. Towering trees such as white oaks, chestnuts and hemlocks formed a vast green canopy that covered hundreds of miles. The forests were such an integral part of this landscape that it was named Pennsylvania by King Carles the Second. Penn – in honor of Sir William Penn – and Sylvania - from the Latin silva meaning woods. Penn's Woods. But as the Commonwealth grew and the United State developed as a nation, those spectacular trees would become one of Pennsylvania's greatest resources. And after decades of clear cutting millions of acres of forests, only a few hundred acres of old growth forests remained by the early 1900s. Pennsylvania's natural landscape was devastated. Wildfires spread across the land. Riverbanks were eroded and flooding occurred. Our land – effectively destroyed.Something needed to be done. Scientists, conservationists and state officials created strategies to develop and protect forests for future generations. It took the planting of millions of trees, passing legislation and a combined effort of local, state and federal government to bring us to where we are today – a vibrant, thriving Pennsylvania ecosystem. The story of Pennsylvania's natural landscape is one of abundance, exploitation and then rebirth. And I have never seen that story told better than by the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum.Located in Ulysses, this awesome museum is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of Pennsylvania's lumber industry. It's a place where history comes alive through hands-on exhibits, live demonstrations, and a deep dive into the lives of the people who worked in one of Pennsylvania's most significant industries. On this episode, I speak with Josh Roth. Self-actualization in business and life is a lot like inventing a snowboarding move, or preparing for the Crossfit Games. You have to set a vision, have awareness, and do the work while still pacing yourself. The scary truth is: a lot of people will never self-actualize because we're afraid of this process. But there is a process you can implement to make self-actualization easier. Today, I'm joined by two athletes and entrepreneurs, Sylvania Harron and Jeff Lavin. We talk about what extreme sport can teach us about self-actualization and the secret to great leadership. The first thing a team leader needs is self-awareness. You must know your strengths and weaknesses. Typically, people think they can do everything, but true success comes from focusing on what you do best and finding others to support the areas where you're weaker. This involves clarifying what you excel at (level 8 skills) and focusing on those, while delegating other tasks to those who can handle them better. Achieving anything great requires you to focus on the nitty gritty and the 30,000ft view. at the same time. Great leaders can zoom in on the minutest details and also zoom out to see the bigger picture. In high-performance scenarios, understanding when to push hard and when to pace yourself is critical. This approach prevents burnout and ensures sustainable performance over the long term. Many people are scared of self-actualization. They avoid facing their dreams and fears because they're afraid of failure and the hard work required to reach their highest potential. However, facing these fears head-on and becoming self-aware are crucial steps toward personal and professional growth. Inventing a snowboarding trick can teach us a lot about self-actualization. You need to have air awareness, understanding the bail points to avoid injury if things go wrong, and adhere to the four P's: Practice, Patience, Persistence, and Perspective. Practice involved countless reps, refining your skills continuously. Persistence means getting back up after every fall, despite the setbacks. Perspective required external feedback, analyzing the metrics or watching video footage to align your performance with your goals. The authors of the new biblical fiction novel, Ahoti discuss their friendship across religious differences and their partnership in writing. Miriam was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and has lived in Israel since 1970. Her love affair with the Bible and ancient sources led to her series of books on daily life in Bible times, her first historical novel The Scroll, her newest novel Ahoti – The Story of Tamar, with co-author Eva Marie Everson, and hundreds of articles. That love grew over many years as a tour educator. Miriam's interest in the New Testament began with the respect that she learned for people of all faiths and cultures from her parents and her older brother and sister. Her writing, and her translating and editing of scholarly research on biblical antiquity on the one hand, and her 20 years as a translator on the news desk of the cutting-edge Israeli daily Haaretz, on the other, come together in a complex whole that, for Miriam, has made life in Israel a never-ending search for meaning, ever more so in troubled times. Eva Marie Everson is a multiple-award winning author and speaker who hails from the picturesque Southern town of Sylvania, Georgia. She is CEO of Word Weavers International (http://www.word-weavers.com/) and the director of Florida Christian Writers Conference (http://word-weavers.com/floridaevents). She enjoys coaching new authors through her company, Pen in Hand. Eva Marie and her husband make their home in Central Florida. Today we invite you into the heart and history of Sister Kathleen Skog, OSF, a devoted Franciscan Sister with an incredible journey of faith, dedication, and service spanning over six decades. This illuminating interview sheds light on Sister Kathleen's early call to religious life, her impactful roles in education and healthcare, and the profound influence of Franciscan spirituality in her mission. Sister Kathleen's story begins in the vibrant suburbs of Minneapolis, where her encounter with the Immaculate Conception Catholic School nuns at a tender age inspired her lifelong commitment to God's call. With candid reflections, she shares her experiences of growing up, her early entrance into the convent, and the rigorous yet rewarding path of becoming a Franciscan Sister. Delving into the historical context, Sister Kathleen recounts the Franciscan Sisters' pivotal role in Texas healthcare, originating from a small newspaper article that led their Mother House from Sylvania, Ohio, to establish St. Francis Hospital in Brenham. This tale of faith and providence highlights the sisters' adaptability and their unwavering commitment to serving communities in need. Throughout the interview, Sister Kathleen's warmth and wisdom illuminate her diverse roles—from teaching young minds in Detroit to overseeing food services at St. Jude Hospital in Brenham, Texas. Her stories of integrating faith into education, embracing community life, and facing health challenges with grace, offer a profound testament to the joy and fulfillment found in a life dedicated to service and God. As the discussion unfolds, listeners gain insights into the Franciscan Sisters' mission, their foundational values rooted in St. Francis of Assisi's teachings, and the evolving needs of their ministry. Sister Kathleen's reflections on the beauty of communal support, the gift of friendship, and the enduring presence of God in her life serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can make through a life of dedication and love. This episode not only explores Sister Kathleen's remarkable journey but also serves as an invitation to contemplate the deeper callings in our own lives. Whether you're drawn to learning more about faith, religion, Christianity, local ministries, or opportunities to support faith-based organizations, Sister Kathleen's story offers inspiration, hope, and a compelling example of living out one's faith in action. Join us on this spiritual voyage as we celebrate the legacy of Sister Kathleen Skog, OSF, and the timeless values of the Franciscan community. For those seeking to deepen their understanding of faith, explore religious vocations, or simply find encouragement in the stories of those who have walked the path of service, this episode is a beacon of light and a source of inspiration. She shares that her weight struggles began after she got married and went on birth control. At 25, Wendy was diagnosed with endometriosis and several years later had a hysterectomy. This put Wendy into early menopause and her weight began to climb. By Spring of 2018, she reached her highest weight and felt terrible. Wendy's sister shared IF and Delay, Don't Deny, and Wendy immediately began her IF journey. Her goal was related to her health, not her weight. Wendy has lost 4 inches off her waist, her allergies have improved, her skin tags are gone, she sleeps well, and she truly enjoys the freedom this lifestyle has brought. Wendy's advice: Get your fasting insulin tested, as it will help you know how to eat. Just do it! Just live the IF lifestyle! Just do it! If I can do it, so can you!
