Ken Ham and Jessica DeFord of Answers in Genesis join the Master Books podcast to discuss their book, Climate Change for Kids... and Parents Too! Check out the book here at MasterBooks.com. Climate Change for Kids...and Parents Too! —is a groundbreaking book designed to equip families with the knowledge and tools to navigate the complex issue of climate change. Authored by renowned speaker and Founding CEO of Answers in Genesis, Ken Ham, and Jessica DeFord, also of Answers in Genesis, this full-color hardback reveals the intersection of science, Scripture, and logic to provide a comprehensive understanding of this issue from a biblical worldview.  Some people are claiming the earth will be destroyed in a few years if this supposed man-made climate change isn't stopped. But author, Ken Ham, forecasts that in another 10 years we will find these predictions haven't come true either for two reasons: God's Word makes it quite clear that man can never destroy the earth (Genesis 8:22). Real observational science (not the radical interpretations of some of the data) does not support the alarming claims of these activists. Christians have no need to fear. In moments when climate change hysteria grips the media or academic spheres, it's crucial to approach with discernment. Beyond the predominant theories attributing climate change to human activity, we must also weigh in various factors such as natural cycles of the earth and the sun, which significantly influence climate patterns. Discover the truth of science, climate change, and the true history of the world in this powerful exploration of climate change science and the importance of developing a strong biblical worldview.

A leaked early version of the curriculum upset some for its lack of any mention of physics, chemistry or biology. Consultation has been put on hold for a second time, with the Ministry of Education waiting to engage with the new Government before it's sent out. St Cuthbert's College principal Justine Mahon says school staff are relieved with this delay. "New Zealand education is in dire straits at the moment, and we need the incoming Government to make it a priority to lift the standard. Scrutinising the draft science curriculum is an imperative." Bad science is a big problem for society, says guest Jonathan Osborne, an expert in science education, but we don't have to surrender to it. Beating bad science requires young people to learn three skills, Osborne says. First is an ability to size up conflicts of interest. Second, to evaluate a source's qualifications. And third, to more rigorously question those who go against consensus. The whole goal of science is consensus, Osborne tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Chapter Timestamps:(00:00:00) Introduction to the EpisodeWelcome to this episode featuring an insightful conversation with Jonathan Osborne about the nuances of scientific argumentation and its implications for education.(00:2:00) The state of science educationThe situation is a pretty dire, and we need to act soon to make sure that we outfit the future generations with the tools they need to navigate truth and falsehoods in science.(00:03:01) The Importance of Science EducationThe role of science education in society and the need for a new approach to science education(00:08:31) Developmental Learning Progression in Science EducationDiscussion on when young people are cognitively ready to understand the challenges of science education. There are fears students won't be taught relevant science knowledge after a leaked copy of the proposed new science curriculum was released. The new draft focuses on contexts - the Earth system, biodiversity, food-energy-water, and infectious diseases. The writers argue they are going for a holistic approach, and that basic physics, chemistry and biology haven't gone ignored. Crimson Global Academy Principal Mark Phillips is concerned that this curriculum discourages Kiwi students from aspiring and achieving.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

An author behind the revised science curriculum maintains that physics and chemistry will still be taught in the classroom. The new draft focuses on contexts - the Earth system, biodiversity, food-energy-water, and infectious diseases. Waikato University Senior Research Fellow Cathy Buntting says the new curriculum will repackage the basics in a context-based approach that teachers aren't used to seeing. "There's a rich context that matters to our students in this time for their future. And the science concepts are absolutely included in there." When the first thing you read about the new science curriculum is a group of science teachers saying “Where's the Science” it's hard not to feel despondent - especially if your child is going through the school system.   It's important to say before we begin this conversation that the information being commented on has come from a leaked draft document from the Ministry of Education - which was sent to just a few teachers for their feedback. They were so taken aback by what they saw they couldn't help sharing it.   It is a draft document. Once selected feedback has been collected a full document will go out to the wider sector and public for feedback in August. So what's been seen isn't set in stone, but I'm grateful to those who have raised alarm bells because it's in all parents' interest to be engaged in this conversation. The main concern expressed by the science teachers is that the proposed school science curriculum makes no mention of physics or chemistry. I don't know about you but I'm under the impression these are quite central to the study of science.   The Ministry wants to take a more holistic approach and excite students by engaging with the issues of the day and teaching science through five contexts: earth system, biodiversity, food, energy and water, and infectious diseases. My science-loving daughter just groaned. “They're turning it into a social studies or English class. We're already dealing with the big issues of the day in every other class”, she said, “can't we just keep setting our hands on fire”   Some context is probably required here. My daughter loves science, not because of the curriculum or because she's good at solving problems with a formula, but because she has an awesome science teacher who engages the class with exciting experiments to bring the science basics to life. And yes, if the class has done well or has had a good week she lets them set their hands on fire - in a perfectly safe and scientific way.   There's something in the idea of making a curriculum more relevant and fun for students. Great teachers have already worked out how to do this, but school can't always be fun and engaging - sometimes it's work.   No amount of playing around with the curriculum is going to make a kid who doesn't like science suddenly like science. It's one of those subjects you tend to like if you're good at it, but will those students be happy to study just five main areas throughout their secondary education.   More importantly though, how is this going to prepare our teenagers for tertiary education. From the friends I know whose offspring have headed off to university to study engineering, math or science, many speak about what a step up it is and how in some ways they didn't feel adequately prepared. Surely the curriculum also needs to be driven by what universities require of students.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Ministry of Education is being criticised for its new draft of the science curriculum. The proposal doesn't appear to list physics and chemistry, but instead focuses on climate change, biodiversity, the food-energy-water nexus, and infectious diseases. New Zealand Initiative senior fellow Michael Johnston told Heather du Plessis-Allan that teachers shouldn't be expected to fill in gaps given there are other challenges like staff shortages. Johnston says teachers have to rely on a curriculum document to guide them, and this one will take them up the garden path. He says he hopes the Ministry will back down from this proposed curriculum. Professor Paul Kilmartin - https://unidirectory.auckland.ac.nz/profile/p-kilmartin (https://unidirectory.auckland.ac.nz/profile/p-kilmartin) In July 2021, seven University of Auckland professors published a letter to the editor in the New Zealand Listener, titled "In Defence of Science". The professors' were responding to a Government education report (see link below), recommending parity for Mātauranga Māori in the secondary school curriculum, and in particular, in the science classroom. The report states: ”Our goal is to ensure parity for mātauranga Māori with the other bodies of knowledge credentialed by NCEA (particularly Western/Pākehā epistemologies)." The report also states: "Philosophy and History of Science is a unique strand in Pūtaiao [Māori word for Science], with no equivalent in the New Zealand Curriculum. It promotes discussion and analysis of the ways in which science has been used to support the dominance of Eurocentric views (among which, its use as a rationale for colonisation of Māori and the suppression of Māori knowledge); and the notion that science is a Western European invention and itself evidence of European dominance over Māori and other indigenous peoples. Pūtaiao allows opportunities to incorporate Māori perspectives and knowledge about the natural world into the classroom. In this regard, it decentres Western epistemologies and methodologies." The professors' letter arose from their concern for "the disturbing misunderstandings of science emerging at all levels of education and in science funding", which they state is encourages a mistrust of science. Their concern is in the context of the decline in maths and science achievements in New Zealand schools, particularly by Māori and Pacific Island students. Their letter stated that: "Indigenous knowledge is critical for the preservation and perpetuation of culture and local practices, and plays key roles in management and policy. However, in the discovery of empirical, universal truths, it falls far short of what we can define as science itself. To accept it as the equivalent of science is to patronise and fail indigenous populations; better to ensure that everyone participates in the world's scientific enterprises. Indigenous knowledge may indeed help advance scientific knowledge in some ways, but it is not science". The reaction to the "In Defence of Science" by the University of Auckland, the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi, the Tertiary Education Union, and the New Zealand Association of Scientists was not positive and can be viewed in the following articles… NZ Herald - Scientists rubbish Auckland University professors' letter claiming Māori knowledge is not science https://tinyurl.com/2p8v2h9s (https://tinyurl.com/2p8v2h9s) RNZ - University academics' claim mātauranga Māori 'not science' sparks controversy https://tinyurl.com/2ybvk3ja (https://tinyurl.com/2ybvk3ja) Research Professional News - Public letter from academics sparks Māori science row https://tinyurl.com/3juc66yc (https://tinyurl.com/3juc66yc) An open letter in response to the professors' letter by professors Hendy and Wiles, "An open response to In defence of science" was co-signed by 2000 people. https://tinyurl.com/2p8m65xn (https://tinyurl.com/2p8m65xn) Sadly, professor Corballis is no longer with us. He was diagnosed with lymphoma in October. The same month the Royal Society announced a breach of conduct inquisition into professor Corballis and two of his co-authors, professors Nola and Cooper, all fellows of the august institution. The Society launched the inquisition having publicly criticised the professors for their letter. Yet we need to be aware that words have the power to build up others as well as to tear them down, especially when we speak them to our children. That means words can cause our children to stumble or they can encourage them to soar! God has much to say about our words. They need to be crafted carefully and gently but firmly shared. Sherri Seligson joins Yvette Hampton to talk about the power of words. Our world is filled with words. Whether we are reading them, writing them, or instructing with them, they are our tools to build stories, create emotions, and make connections. Yet we need to be aware that words have the power to build up others as well as to tear them down, especially when we speak them to our children. That means words can cause our children to stumble or they can encourage them to soar! God has much to say about our words. They need to be crafted carefully and gently but firmly shared. This is how we can engage others and train up our children. Let's contemplate not only the power of our words, but how we can boldly use them. Come back tomorrow for the rest of this conversation. As are our Latino students. And girls make up only 31% of these classes, too.

If you're a regular listener you're no doubt aware of my former obsession with video games and gamification. This stemmed from time spent gaming as a young teacher where I would get flown around the world playing FIFA competitively for tens of thousands of dollars (which is small time compared to what the younguns are playing for these days). This fascination lead me down a path of exploring gamification in education, a passion that has again earned me lots of fun travel to speak about how we can motivate and engage our learners through the use of game mechanics in the classroom. Todays guest makes what I do look like small time gamification. Charlie is a Science teacher who is gamifiying his classes at another level. Through the use of powerful narrative, his students are exploring scenarios and solving problems in a way that simply couldn't be done in a traditional classroom. His commitment to the cause is really a sight to behold and the stories he shares with us today will really challenge your perception of what a learning environment can look like. If anything that we discuss today interests you, please check out our free Introduction to Gamification course. You can access this course here. In addition to this, we mention a book called Actionable Gamification. I promised I would give a copy of this book away, but i'm going to make you work for it! Through the use of powerful narrative, his students are exploring scenarios and solving problems in a way that simply couldn't be done in a traditional classroom. His commitment to the cause is really a sight to behold and the stories he shares with us today will really challenge your perception of what a learning environment can look like.If anything that we discuss today interests you, please check out our free Introduction to Gamification course. You can access this course here. In addition to this, we mention a book called Actionable Gamification. I promised I would give a copy of this book away, but i'm going to make you work for it! If you want to go into the draw for this book, what you have to do is, leave a review of the podcast on iTunes, take a screenshot, and send that screenshot through to me at carl@augmentedlearning.co.nz. Encore release September 8, 2018. Encore release June 1, 2017.   We interview Staise Gonzalez, mover and shaker with Houston Atheists, about her recent (and thus far successful effort) to prevent Helen Ukpabio from visiting the United States. For those unfamiliar with Ukpabio, she is an infamous Nigerian preacher/filmmaker whose poisonous teaching about demon possession has led many children to be abandoned, abused--even murdered--by their families. To see just how nutty Ukpabio is, check out her film "End of the Wicked." Also...North Carolina preachers with an anti-gay agenda are in the news again. This time it's Pastor Charles Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, NC. Worley's Final Solution for "the lesbians and the queers" has gone viral on the web. Finally, we review the controversy surrounding one-time Republican lobbyist Edwina Rogers as the new executive director of the Secular Coalition for America. Rogers has gotten off to a rocky start with prominent freethought bloggers, mostly for her insistence that Republicans are NOT largely anti-choice, anti-gay and anti-seperation-of-church-and-state. Read and/or listen to her interview with Greta Christina for more. Meanwhile, videos from her Republican lobbying days, like this one in which she's shown living in an 18,000 square foot mansion and wrapping gifts in money, can't help. Encore release September 7, 2018. Encore release May 31, 2017.   Finally! President Barack Obama goes on the record in support of gay marriage--but only a day after North Carolina voters approved a state constitutional amendment banning it. And speaking of North Carolina, pastor Sean Harris of Fayetteville's Berean Baptist Church preached a sermon in which he advocated parental violence against gay children. He later issued a non-apology apology, dismissing the whole thing as a poor choice of words. Meanwhile, gay activist Dan Savage is under fire from critics for calling bull$#!+ on Christians obsessed with Old Testament prohibitions against homosexuality. Finally, David highly recommends Kurt Vonnegut's classic novel Cat's Cradle. Encore release September 6, 2018. Encore release May 30, 2017.   That's right, 150 episodes. Yay us. John gives a report on his (and Allison's) recent trip to London and Edinburgh. A good time was had by all. We received lots of listener feedback on our interview in show 149 with Matthew Bowman, an admitted true-believing Mormon and author of the cultural history The Mormon People: The Making of an American Faith (hardcover or Kindle). Listeners opined Mormon attempts to overturn same-sex marriage in Maryland, the shocking suicide rate among gay Mormons, and expressed dismay that a seemingly thoughtful and intelligent person could believe in golden plates. On to business...it looks like the religionists won Salazar v. Buono, the case to remove a Christian cross (erected by a private party in 1934) from Sunrise Rock, which is located deep within the federally-owned preserve in California's Mojave Desert. Rather than rule that a private cross on federal property is unconstitutional, the Supreme Court kicked the case back to the lower court. Now a federal judge has ruled that the cross can stay as long as the government swaps the acre where the cross sits for five acres elsewhere. It's a bad ruling and a bad outcome that sets a bad precedent. No secular (or no-Christian) symbol would ever have been show such deference. Meanwhile, the Freedom from Religion Foundation has convinced Sylvania, Alabama to remove a blatantly religious Bible verse from its "welcome" signs. How anyone could think that "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism" isn't hopelessly sectarian and plainly unconstitutional boggles the imagination. Finally, the War on Christmas rages in April in Leesburg, Virginia, where local freethought groups are urging the county's planners NOT to allow holiday displays on the courthouse grounds. (In recent years, the park around the courthouse has turned into a tacky free-speech free-for-all. Lesson planning and sequencing seem to be ever present problems for teachers and coordinators. Which topics should go where? Who should have control over making those decisions? Curriculum research in an economics course provides some insight into how we should choose our priorities (Transforming the economics curriculum by integrating threshold concepts). As we search for how to create a system for making sequencing decisions we’ll add a second study (Looking for Coherence in Science Curriculum) that suggests not all those questions have a single clear answer. Later we’ll turn to the impact of SES on how students’ brains respond to different educational situations (The Emerging (Social) Neuroscience of SES).
